Bear Walker: Turning pop culture 360
“The texture started out as basic line art, but now it’s kind of evolved into this background texture I created,” Walker said. “I also use it as an intricate focal point somewhere on the board for when the design has a lot of details like a portrait or character.” By Gina Castro
What started out as a project for his senior year at Clemson University quickly developed into a passion and then a business. Bear Walker is a premium skateboard designer based out of Daphne, AL. Walker’s boards have been widely accepted in the realm of pop culture. Walker has partnered with Legendary Television to create a limited edition collector’s board for the company’s Netflix series Lost in Space. Among some of his fans are DC Comics’ Aquaman Jason Momoa and The Flash’s Grant Gustin. Walker grew up surfing in South Carolina, but once he started college, he wasn’t near an ocean anymore. So, he started skateboarding. Walker designed his first skateboard as his final project for his graphic design degree in 2011. He said he enjoyed the process but didn’t think anything more of the project until he started working at a company that made high-end wooden signs. “After working for a sign company for a few years, the idea kinda clicked to carve artwork out of the top of boards to create grip,” Walker said. “I made one for myself, and people started asking where I got it, so I moved from there.” But that wasn’t Walker’s first time working with a wood medium. He spent years with his dad building custom homes. After receiving praise for his first few boards, Walker decided to start his first skateboard shop in Charleston, SC. The business unfortunately failed. Walker said that his first business failed because he wasn’t creating what he is passionate about. “Back then, I was trying to do this whole surfing and beach vibe kind of thing,” Walker said. “I thought it was what I wanted to create, but I wasn’t even going with my passion, which is pop culture.”
So, Walker started from scratch. He moved from Charleston to Daphne, where his parents are originally from. His parents moved back to Daphne when Walker went to college. From there, Walker saved up money, harnessed his craft and discovered his passion for pop culture. In 2016, he started the skateboard shop he is known for today. Walker’s process for designing the boards has evolved over the years, especially his process for creating the texture of the top layer of the board. Walker said that developing the texture was the most difficult aspect. The texture is important because it gives the skateboarder grip. “The texture started out as basic line art, but now it’s kind of evolved into this background texture I created,” Walker said. “I also use it as an intricate focal point somewhere on the board for when the design has a lot of details like a portrait or a character.” Walker said that the process for making his designs come to life really depends on the board. If the board design he has in mind calls for a “hand drawn feel,” he will sketch the design on paper, scan the sketch and then program the design to come out of his machine. His other route is rooted in his graphic design
background, so he will draw his design on Illustrator and then program the design into his machine. Once the product comes out of the machine, Walker spends a couple of hours cutting and sanding the board and then airbrushes the board by hand. This tedious process can take anywhere between 2 to 30 hours. It all depends on if the board is one of his mass production boards, which takes about 2 to 3 hours to make, or a custom designed board, which is about 20 to 30 hours of work. Although creating custom boards is more challenging and costly than designing mass production boards, Walker enjoys the process more. You can order custom boards on his website bearwalker. com. “It’s definitely more difficult than mass production, but it’s definitely where innovation comes from,” Walker said. “New ideas spark from trying to create someone else’s vision. I actually make way less money making custom boards than I do making mass production boards, but it keeps it interesting, and it’s where my next line of mass production comes from.” The majority of Walker’s designs are inspired by pop culture, such as Marvel’s Iron Man, Rick and Morty and the horror flick It.
WE’RE SOCIAL
So, naturally, he has partnered with artists and actors within pop culture. One of his favorite collaborations was creating a line of boards with Zachary Levi, the actor who plays Shazam. “One of my favorite things we do is collaborate with different artists and companies constantly,” Walker said. “Collaborating is like another realm where I can innovate. A lot of the times, the artist I’m working with think about something I’ve never thought of doing because I know the process. Someone who doesn’t know the process will think of something, and I’ll go ‘Oh, wow. I hadn’t thought about trying that before.’ It helps me create new ideas.” Walker will be opening his second custom board skate shop in LA in 2020 and then, eventually, open up more locations around the world. He also plans to implement more environmentally friendly aspects into his business. As of now, each skateboard purchased plants two trees. Walker plants a single tree and his packager plants the second tree. Walker also uses all of the saw dust waste to help grow local food. He plans to use the compost from that to grow more gardens in the future. For more information about Bear Walker, go to bearwalker.com or follow him on social media @ BearWalkerOfficial. •

Shelley Guy Reynolds Will Receive Florida Bar Bro Bono Award in Supreme Court Ceremony Jan. 30 The Florida Bar will recognize 22 lawyers for their work on behalf of low-income and disadvantaged clients at a Jan. 30 ceremony at the Supreme Court of Florida. Established in 1981, The Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Awards are intended to encourage lawyers to volunteer free legal services to the poor. The annual awards recognize those who make public service commitments and raise public awareness of the volunteer services provided by Florida lawyers. Florida Bar President John M. Stewart will present the 2020 awards. Shelley Guy Reynolds, a graduate of The Florida State University School of Law in 1989, began her legal career at the State Attorney’s Office in Escambia County. Working in the
juvenile division, she felt most helpful to the families of young, troubled children. Now Reynolds, who has her own practice, works with Legal Services of North Florida on domestic violence cases and child delinquency cases, having invested seven months and more than 250 hours on a case with one child. Reynolds worked to preserve the child’s legal status within the United States and to keep the child from being housed in a Department of Juvenile Justice program. Her stubborn commitment to the child didn’t make her popular with her adversaries, but eventually, thanks to the hard work by co-counsel at LSNF and a special, out-of-town Guardian Ad Litem, they secured a favorable result for the child. Reynolds’ pro bono work changed the way the juvenile court now handles immigrant children’s delinquency cases.
ESCAMBIA COUNTY VETERANS COURT IN NEED OF MENTORS
Escambia County Veterans Treatment Court, January 10, 2020: Escambia County Veterans Treatment Court Judge and veteran of military service, the Honorable Gary Bergosh, resolves to build on previous program success by bolstering the Veteran Mentor program with a kick-off event at the Artel Gallery of Pensacola on January 29, 2020 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Veterans Treatment Court was initiated in 2015 in Escambia County as a proactive response to justice-involved veterans with non-violent criminal conduct related to mental health and substance abuse issues stemming from military service. The program allows honorably discharged veterans the opportunity to engage in the closely monitored program that requires regular court appearances (a weekly minimum in the early phase of the program), as well as mandatory attendance at treatment sessions and frequent and random testing for substance use. Veterans respond favorably to this structured environment, given their past experiences in the Armed Forces.
“Since establishing Escambia’s Veterans Treatment Court, we have seen decreased incarceration for military veteran non-violent offenders and an increase in the number of veterans receiving substance and mental health assistance,” said Judge Bergosh, a retired Marine Corps officer. Current statistics reveal that one in five veterans has symptoms of a mental health disorder or cognitive impairment. One in six veterans who served in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom suffers from a substance use issue. Research continues to draw a link between combat-related service and/or trauma and substance use. It is hoped that by keeping veterans out of jail and prison, Veterans Treatment Court saves the lives, families and futures of justice-involved veterans, all while reducing costs to the taxpayers. PENSACOLA FIRE DEPARTMENT MEMBERS RECOGNIZED FOR SERVICE, PROMOTIONS
Members of the Pensacola Fire Department were recognized for outstanding service, promotions and more during PFD’s annual awards and recognition ceremony Thursday, Jan. 16 at the Sanders Beach-Corinne Jones Resource Center. Fire Chief Ginny Cranor spoke at the ceremony about the Pensacola Fire Department’s mission and values, which she said partner perfectly with the City of Pensacola and Mayor Grover Robinson’s mission to be a “city of excellence.” “We exist to provide quality, professional life safety and property protection to our community, through our dedication, honor, professionalism and compassion – through our four core values,” Chief Cranor said. Although members of PFD are often hesitant to receive special recognition for just doing their job, Chief Cranor emphasized the importance of acknowledging their hard work and dedication. Some 2019 highlights from the ceremony included the installation of 66 smoke alarms in one day through PFD’s smoke alarm program, a rapid response to a submerged vehicle, a thorough search and rescue mission for boaters in Pensacola Bay, and members of PFD coming together to support Escambia County Fire Rescue after the loss of their Division Chief Dwain Bradshaw in the line of duty.
“Tonight we highlight the PFD’s values in action – extraordinary examples of you just doing your job,” Chief Cranor said. “24 hours a day, our crews are responding to emergencies and calls for help. And in addition to response, they are working through prevention and preparation activities every single day...our crews are trained and preparing for that worst-case scenario every day.” Mayor Robinson also expressed his support for Pensacola Fire Department, although he was unable to attend the ceremony due to Thursday’s City Council meeting. “I am incredibly proud of the work that the men and women of Pensacola Fire Department do every single day to prevent fires and save lives in our community,” Mayor Robinson said. “Their sacrifices do not go unnoticed, and I am honored to have a fire department in the City of Pensacola that exemplifies our core values and goes above and beyond to serve our citizens.” The following members of PFD were recognized at the ceremony: Awards and Recognition Firefighter of the Year Firefighter Joseph McCombs

PROPOSAL SEEKS COMPENSATION FOR OCOEE MASSACRE
News Service of Florida Staff A pair of bills seeking compensation for descendants of the 1920 Election Day race riots in Ocoee will go before the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday. The measures (SB 1262, SB 1264), sponsored by Orlando Democratic Sen. Randolph Bracy, would set aside $25 million to create the Ocoee Election Day Riots Descendant Compensation Trust Fund within the Department of Legal Affairs. Up to $150,000 would be available for direct descendants of each person “killed, injured, or otherwise victimized” by the 1920 violence, which happened after a black man attempted to vote in the Central Florida community. “Based on differing reports, between three and 60 African Americans died resulting from the violence on November 2-3, 1920,” according to a Senate staff analysis of the legislation. “In the days following this violence, the remaining African-American residents fled Ocoee, leaving their homes and property,” the analysis adds. The bill lays out requirements for applicants to prove their relationship to an Ocoee victim. Applicants must also agree they won’t seek further compensation through a “claim bill” from the Legislature regarding the violence. In Nov. 2018, the Ocoee Commission issued a proclamation stating “the historical re-
cord clearly shows that African-America residents of West Orange County in and around what later became the city of Ocoee were grievously denied their civil rights, their property, and their very lives in a series of unlawful acts perpetrated by a white mob and governmental officials on Nov. 2, 1920, and the following weeks simply because they tried to vote, as any eligible citizens should be able to do.” The proclamation notes that no African Americans lived in the city for the next six decades, resulting in the area being referred to as a “sundown city.” Sundown cities were communities that blacks were expected to avoid after sundown. Bracy’s proposal is modeled in part on a 1994 decision by the Legislature to compensate AfricanAmerican families up to $150,000 for damages in the Rosewood Massacre of 1923. The 1994 action also set up the Rosewood Family Scholarship Fund, which awarded up to $4,000 for tuition to eligible Florida students, with preference given to direct descendants of Rosewood families. State Rep. Kamia Brown, D-Ocoee, has filed House legislation similar to Bracy’s, which would also gives qualified businesses in areas affected by the riots priority under the Black Business Loan Program.
HOUSE LOOKS AT $462 MILLION FOR TEACHER PAY News Service of Florida Staff A House education panel on Thursday unveiled an early budget recommendation that includes $462 million for teacher pay raises after conducting a “budget exercise” for the coming fiscal year. House PreK-12 Appropriations Chairman Chris Latvala, R-Clearwater, said the exercise was done to see if existing money in the education budget could be shifted to fund other issues. He said his committee will recommend cutting $520 million from some education programs, including $284.5 million from the “Best and Brightest” teacher bonus program. Latvala will recommend $462.6 million be reallocated to what is known as the “base student allocation” with the intent of funding teacher pay raises. Ever since Gov. Ron
DeSantis rolled out $900 million in pay initiatives, lawmakers have been scrambling to find money. The governor has urged state lawmakers to approve a $600 million plan to set a minimum salary of $47,500 for public school teachers and $300 million for a new bonus program for teachers and principals. House Speaker Jose Oliva, R-Miami Lakes, opened the 2020 legislative session on Tuesday with a pledge to “work toward a significant, equitable and substantial proposal” on teacher pay that can also accommodate wage increases in other critical areas of state government. The recommendation from Latvala’s committee will be sent to House Appropriations Chairman Travis Cummings, RFleming Island, for consideration.

The Partnership for Florida Tourism, which includes the Florida Attractions Association, Destinations Florida, the Florida Cattlemen’s Association and the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association, will be hosting “tourism day” next week to drum up support for the embattled agency. The group is also slated to hold a mid-day rally at the Capitol. Wednesday’s “annual event is designed to educate the state Legislature, media, and all Floridians about the vital role tourism plays in job creation and a low tax burden in Florida,” according to a press release. The fate of Visit Florida could be determined during the legislative session, as House Speaker Jose Oliva, R-Miami Lakes, continues pushing to eliminate the tourism-marketing agency. Oliva argues the state does not need Vis-
it Florida to draw tourists, but Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Senate have continued to back Visit Florida. Senate President Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, has said the state must be able to market its tourism industry to combat negative images of hurricanes and polluted waters. House leaders in recent years questioned some of Visit Florida’s past contracts, including $1 million for rapper Pitbull to market the state, $1.25 million to sponsors of the British football club Fulham and $2.9 million to sponsor an IMSA racing team. Legislation (SB 362, HB 213) intended to keep the tourism-marketing agency operating through Oct. 1, 2028 has started to move in the Senate, but has yet to appear before a House committee. Lawmakers last year cut Visit Florida’s funding from $76 million to $50 million, leading to layoffs. In his proposed budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1, DeSantis has included $50 million to maintain the agency’s current funding.
FLORIDA TARGETS SPACE FORCE Jim Turner News Service of Florida TALLAHASSEE --- Florida’s aerospace agency has launched a new front in its effort to make the Sunshine State more enticing as a potential player in the nation’s up-and-coming Space Force. The Space Florida Board of Directors on Thursday approved $200,000 for Satellite Beach-based GTOPS, Inc., a veteran-owned business that provides facilities-support services, to further showcase how military bases and businesses in the state are capable of training and equipping President Donald Trump’s new military branch. “If you can’t make the articulate arguments for what capabilities you’ve got to support missions, you’ll never get those mission assignments,” Space Florida President and CEO Frank DiBello said after Thursday’s meeting in Tallahassee. Florida officials have often pointed to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ political ties to Trump as they lobby for the new branch, which is expected to be moved from the Department of the Air Force to having its own representation on the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon in October. The move is expected to kickoff a five-year phase in. Space Florida officials maintain that luring the combatant command or the components that will make up the bulk of the Space Force will require showing that many of the new agency’s functions already exist in some manner at Cape Canaveral and military bases across the state. “There’s a political element to everything, but you aren’t going to see something as critical as space combat be placed in Idaho simply because the president likes somebody in Idaho,” DiBello maintained. “It’s going to have to be done because there’s a strategic reason to put that mission element in Idaho.” Florida already has the aerospace infrastructure needed to quickly support the high-tech missions that will be the focus of Space Force, according to DiBello and other Space Florida officials, such as Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez. “I go up to D.C. pretty frequently to
talk about this and other issues,” said Nunez, who also serves as the chairwoman of the Space Florida board. “The governor has made it very clear that he is going to continue to push on that. So, we’re really engaged.”
Florida is competing with other states for the command headquarters, which will have an initial job of protecting satellites and other hardware already in space and carries the prospect of new jobs and a boost to the state and local economies. Trump has asked Congress for $8 billion during the phase-in period for the new agency. “We’ll see what ends up happening with that,” DeSantis said of the state’s recruitment efforts, during a Friday event in Jacksonville. The governor was in Jacksonville to announce that Made in Space, which develops space-manufacturing technology for commercial use, is relocating its corporate headquarters from California to Northeast Florida. DeSantis has been pitching Trump on Florida for the Space Force command for nearly a year. The Republican governor has tied the new military branch to the space industry around Cape Canaveral, which has seen a slow resurgence as private companies --- spurred by a space race among billionaires --- look to reduce costs by manufacturing launch vehicles close to launch pads. “We want to be able to arm our governor and our federal delegation with the tools that they need to make the arguments as to why Florida makes sense for these mission assignments,” DiBello said Thursday. Trump last month signed a $738 billion defense spending bill that includes $148 million to build a Combined Space Operations Facility at Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colo. But the Schriever facility is not considered the permanent location for the headquarters, and several states --- including California, Alabama, Louisiana, Virginia and Texas --- are also vying for the field headquarters.
