PAVI NG T HE WAY FOR AN AUT I SM -FRIENDLY COMMUNI TY by Gina Castro
What does autism look like? This is a common question for those
who aren’t familiar with the autism spectrum disorder (ASD). For a while, the only mainstream representation of autism
was the film Rain Man. In recent years, as more people discuss
autism, the disorder has been represented in various television shows and movies including the Netflix Original Series Atypical and The Good Doctor. These television shows display
characters who are autistic living regular lives and working in challenging career fields. Cate Merrill, Autism Pensacola
President and CEO, said that this type of representation is good for raising awareness about autism. Buzz Ritchie, the
Director of Development at Autism Pensacola, said that these
shows also help teach viewers the proper terminology. For example, you shouldn’t say “my autistic friend” you should say “my friend has autism." Autism or ASD refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Autism Pensacola, a Florida 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, has been serving the families of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties since 2002 and is the leading connector and resource for autism support, advocacy, education and networking opportunities in the Pensacola Bay Area. The CDC recently reported that 1 in 59 people have autism. “We serve Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, so that’s about 9,000 potential individuals between our two counties who are living with autism,” Merrill said. “That's a lot of people. Another thing we like to say is if you meet one person with autism, you’ve met one person because it's a spectrum—different cognitive abilities, physical abilities, races and sexes.” One of Autism Pensacola’s goals is to make the area an autism-friendly community. On March 21, Autism Pensacola will host the fundraising campaign Steps for Autism. All of the money raised at this event will be used to support the mission and programs of Autism Pensacola in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, including safety, quality of life and awareness initiatives. One hundred percent of proceeds raised during Steps for Autism stays in the local area. The celebration is from 9 am to 1 pm at the Pensacola State College walking track located at 1000 College Blvd. The event will feature food trucks, vendors, bouncy houses and a stage with different performers and entertainment. “Steps is for everybody. We want everyone in the community to come out. It's not only for the children we work with,” Ritchie said. “It's for the whole community to help the community better understand the pop-
ulation that we serve. Autism is not very well understood.” Merrill calls Steps for Autism their kick off event since April is Autism Awareness Month and April 2 is Autism Awareness Day. For the entire month of April, Autism Pensacola will be training local businesses to be autism friendly. Merrill said that they plan to work with businesses who deal with families often such as grocery stores, movie theatres and restaurants. The training will include teaching businesses what autism is and explaining how they can accommodate those with autism. Merrill said that they also hope these businesses will help fundraise. “Part of this is just to have more businesses understand what autism is all about,” Ritchie said. “A child is pretty prone to have a melt down in a restaurant, and it's nice if the establishment kind of understands what mom and dad are going through with trying to get the child under control. That’s part of our outreach is to bring awareness.”
"It's not only for the children we work with. It's for the whole community to better understand the population that we serve. Autism is not very well understood. Jena Sudderth, an Autism Pensacola staff member and mother of a child with autism, said that whenever she explains her child’s sensitivities to the restaurant staff, they easily accommodate her family’s needs. “If you politely tell the host your child or individual might have a sensitivity to the lights or music, 10 times out of 10 they will turn down the lights or the music,” Sudderth explained. “I’ve never gone into a restaurant where they haven't accommodated. My non-verbal child has eaten at the Grand Marlin and Chilies without a melt down. All you have to do is politely ask.” This initiative is an extension of Autism Pensacola’s training program for first responders, such as the Pensacola Police Department (PPD), sheriff's department and EMTs. Recently, they started training Pensacola International Airport’s TSA officers. They partner with the PPD’s Lieutenant Jimmy Donohoe, who has an adult son with autism, and a retired fire chief from Boston for the training program. “We teach them what autism looks like. Someone who is repeating everything you say, looks like the rest of us and is resisting going through the metal detector might not be a drug issue or some other type of illness it could be autism,” Merrill said. “So we teach them to look out for these different characteristics and tips on how to address these individuals.” While every individual living with autism is unique, the most common characteristics include effects on the five senses, social interactions and communication expressions. A large number of people with autism struggle with situations that involve large groups of people, loud music and bright lights. Events like music festivals or large community events can be a challenge for people who have autism and their families. To accomodate people who struggle with sen-
sory issues, social anxiety or other similar issues, Autism Pensacola brings pop-up sensory rooms to local events. The sensory room has items such as cooler lights, fidget spinners, bean bag chairs and noise cancelling headphones to help visitors reset without having to go back home.
"Part of this is just to have more businesses understand what autism is all about. “It can be a challenge to pack up your whole family, find a parking space, get to the festival or Wahoos game and then have to leave within five to 10 minutes,” Merrill said. “Knowing that the event is expecting them and wants them there is a huge thing for the families.” Autism Pensacola’s website has a lengthy list of local resources for families and adults who are in search of diagnostic centers, therapy, respite care and even hair salons. “We have been working on that resource guide by getting it as up to date as possible and growing it, but we need about 10 or a 100 more for each area,” Merrill said. “Where there might be one dentist office, we need more. Where there might be one Chuck E. Cheese, we need more.” The resource list has a handful of places that focus on early intervention, which is very important for ASD. “A problem in our world is communicating to parents about how important it is for early intervention. Some parents have parental denial,” Ritchie said.
WE'RE SOCIAL!
“That’s another reason Autism Pensacola exists is to keep the word out there. If you have a 2-year-old child that is not speaking yet, it might be a signal to pay attention to that because the quicker we get into therapy the greater the outcome.” “The outcomes can be so much better when you get started early, and it’s okay if it's not autism,” Merrill said. It doesn’t hurt to get screened.” Early intervention affords the best opportunity to support healthy development. Early intervention can improve learning, communication and social skills. The resource lists also includes other organizations and programs for people with autism. One of the programs is Argos for Autism, which is based out of the University of West Florida. Merrill said that UWF has been selected as one of the top 10 universities for kids to attend that are on the spectrum. Argos for Autism helps students with autism get ready for classes and acclimate to their dorm room. Only 19 percent of individuals with autism go to college, yet on average, individuals with autism have a higher intelligence. UWF also partners with Autism Pensacola during Kids for Camp, which is a summer camp for ages 2 to 22. Kids for Camp is a data-driven program that uses best-practice techniques, specifically Applied Behavior Analysis, to contribute to both the skill acquisition of the individuals with autism and the continuing education of the teachers, support staff and college students who work with those with autism. ESRBA'S RESPONSE TO COVID-19 Amidst concerns about the spread of COVID-19 and necessity to practice social distancing, we want to let you know that serving our members still remains our top priority. However, we are taking precautionary actions that may require us to deliver those services in a different manner for a while out of concern for our members, staff, and the community at-large. These changes include restricting access to our office and implementing processes to enable employees who are able to work remotely to do so. As of this week, we are operating as a virtual office for non-employees until further notice. This includes mem-
bers, vendors, and LRS walk-ins. We look forward to serving our members and the public via phone, email, and mail. We also encourage you to engage with us on Facebook and Twitter. If envelopes need to be dropped off, a drop box is located to the left of the front door. These steps will reduce the potential for the spread of COVID-19 through personal contact and contamination of the ESRBA office work environment. All in-person events such as our monthly Bar Meetings and live CLE seminars have been cancelled through the end of May. Committee meetings will be held electronically, via conference call, or other

coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Subject to Florida Public Service Commission approval, beginning May 1, Gulf Power plans to issue a one-time decrease of approximately 40% for the typical residential customer bill as a result of lower fuel costs. In Florida, fuel savings are typically refunded to customers over the remainder of the year to provide level, predictable bills. However, given the emergent and significant financial challenges facing many customers due to COVID-19, Gulf Power will instead seek to give customers the total annual savings in their May bill. Business customers will also see a significant one-time decrease in May, depending on usage and rate class. Gulf Power has a pandemic plan in place and regularly trains and drills for unplanned events and crises. The company understands the critical role electricity plays in the economy and daily lives of Northwest Florida residents, and Gulf Power remains steadfastly committed to continuously delivering the reliable energy that our communities rely on. For customers experiencing hardship as a result of COVID-19, Gulf Power has resources available at GulfPower. com/Help, or the company can connect customers with resources available from federal, state and local authorities. To further assist customers, Gulf Power is also implementing the same policies that it does during major crises events, including suspending electrical disconnections and providing payment extensions for customers in a hardship situation. These policies will remain in effect while Florida is under a state of emergency. The Gulf Power Foundation has committed $500,000 to local United Way organizations serving Northwest Florida to help members of our communities impacted by COVID-19. In total, Gulf Power and its fellow NextEra Energy companies and employees have so far committed nearly $2.75 million in COVID-19 emergency assistance funds that will be distributed directly to those in need and to partner organizations working on the frontlines of the crisis to provide critical support to the most vulnerable members of the community.

GAS PRICES ‘PLUMMET’ TO BELOW $2 A GALLON NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF House and Senate leaders said Thursday that formal budget negotiations could take place this weekend as lawmakers try to wrap up the 2020 legislative session. House Speaker Jose Oliva, R-Miami Lakes, advised House members to stay in Tallahassee because of a “good possibility” that budget conference committees will meet during the weekend. A short time later, Senate President Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton,
The Summation Weekly offered a similar message when speaking with reporters. “I feel good where we are with the Florida House of Representatives. The speaker of the House and I have continued to communicate, negotiate. On the optimistic side, I would tell the members to be prepared to go into conference at some point this weekend.” Galvano said. “It’s nothing certain, but that’s how we feel about the progress.” The legislative session is scheduled to end March 13. But Oliva and Galvano said earlier this week that they expected that the session to go into overtime because of delays in negotiating the budget for the fiscal year starting July 1. A budget would have to be finalized by Tuesday for the session to end March 13. That is because of a legally required 72-hour review period before lawmakers can vote.
SEVEN PRISON EMPLOYEES TEST POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 ANA CEBALLOS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE — Seven Florida Department of Corrections employees who work at separate facilities across the state have tested positive for COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus, agency officials said late Friday. Agency officials would not release the positions held by the infected prison workers, but in a statement said the employees either worked for the corrections department or one of its contractors at five prisons and two probation offices. The staffers work at Century Correctional Institute in Escambia County; Everglades Correctional Institution in Miami-Dade County; Florida Women’s Reception Center and Marion Correctional Institution, both in Ocala; Zephyrhills Correctional Institution in Pasco County; and community corrections regional offices in Lake Butler and West Palm Beach. The employees will not return to work until they have been cleared by health officials, the agency said. An investigation is underway to identify inmates and staff who may need to go into isolation after coming into close contact with the employees infected with the highly contagious virus, officials said in the statement. While the number of people exposed to the employees is unknown, the department confirmed Tuesday that three workers at the Marion Correctional Institution have been placed in self-isolation after being exposed by an infected employee there. There are no confirmed coronavirus cases within the inmate population as of 9 a.m. Friday, officials said. Any inmates who show COVID-19 symptoms or who have been in contact with an employee who tested positive for the virus will be placed in medical isolation, according to the department. Symptomatic inmates will be isolated in their dormitories until they are medically cleared, and local health officials will determine whether those inmates need to be tested, corrections officials said. A corrections department spokeswoman did not immediately respond to requests for information about how
COURT LIMITS VISITATION IN CHILD PROTECTIVE CASES NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Canady on Friday temporarily limited court-ordered family visitation in child-protective cases, pointing to concerns about the spread of the novel coronavirus. The decision involves children who are under the supervision of the state Department of Children and Families and visits by
many inmates or workers have been tested statewide. But corrections officials said they are working with the Florida Department of Health to monitor and contain potential outbreaks in the prison system, which has 143 facilities, more than 23,000 employees and roughly 96,000 inmates—including thousands of elderly offenders. To prevent the virus from spreading, the department has suspended faceto-face inmate visitations, restricted the intake of county jail inmates and started screening anyone who enters a correctional institution. Only employees who are considered “essential” are allowed to come to work, the department said. As of Thursday, essential employees included some educators who have been asked to “provide as much education programming as possible” while programs are temporarily adjusted, according to a memo obtained by The News Service of Florida. “Programming will not only keep our students engaged and their brains active, it will serve to decrease the boredom inherent with restrictions of this scope and scale. We see it as our role to promote the safety and security of our institutions by providing positive activity options for our resident population,” officials wrote to employees on Thursday. State workers who have to stay home because they have COVID-19 symptoms, such as a fever or cough, are pushing the DeSantis administration to give them administration leave, instead of forcing them to use their own accrued paid time off. During a press conference Friday, Gov. Ron DeSantis did not appear to have a full grasp of the type of work flexibility offered to corrections employees with COVID-19 symptoms. When asked by reporters if it was reasonable to require symptomatic corrections workers to use their paid time off to self-quarantine, DeSantis said, “I don’t know if those reports are true.” Department of Corrections Secretary Mark Inch “is a very reasonable guy, so I would talk to him to see whether that is true or not,” the governor said Friday.
their parents, siblings or other people. Through April 17, such visits will be conducted through video communications instead of in-person unless “all parties and the caregiver agree that the visitation can take place in a manner that does not pose a health threat,” Canady wrote in a four-page order. If video communications are not available, telephone calls would be an alternative. The order said “alternatives to in-person visitation are necessary to protect the health, safety, and wellbeing of these children, their families, their caregivers, and others in the community during this state of emergency and public health emergency.”
