APPLE MARKET: A FAMILY GROCERY GETS CREATIVE

If you’ve ever driven along Scenic Highway, you’ve likely noticed the Apple Market— the quaint red and white building with an oversized red awning on the South side of the highway that never has an empty parking lot. For 27 years, this little market has been bringing some of the best local goods to the Pensacola area. It serves as much more than just a neighborhood grocery store, as it has truly become an icon of our local community. However, what some may not know is that this small family-owned market and deli has been through its own share of trials and tribulations.

In 2017, the Apple Market faced a small business owner’s worst nightmare—a big-box grocery store opening just two miles away. A competing grocery store, Publix, had opened a new location in East Hill.

“We kind of hit a bump in the road whenever Publix opened up. We’re just a little small mom-and-pop grocery store; a big chain moving in close to us can really affect our bottom line in a matter of weeks,” said Britney Dull, Apple Market manager and daughter of owner David Apple.

Unfortunately, the chain opening up did affect Apple Market

greatly. “When Britney says it was a little bump in the road, it was actually that her dad sold his house and lived in an RV in the back, so as not to let any employees go. They did everything they could to be able to keep this place running,” said Jeff Rogers, Apple Market Marketing Director.

Frustrated, Britney created a post on social media that spoke about the differences between a small business and a corporation. The community responded with an outpouring of love for the family-owned market.

“The post wasn’t a plea, it was just to educate people. It went viral as people kept sharing and sharing. It made the news and then our shelves were empty. The community really showed up,” she explained. “People would come in droves and the parking lot was slammed. Well, guess what? That gave us enough to pay payroll. And then everybody came in that had drifted away; they fell back in love with the store and slowly started coming back. We had to adapt but by the grace of God, we were able to bounce back.”

After the scare created by Publix, the Apple Market team knew that they needed to add another element to their store that makes the market stand out from its competitors. In the back of the store, there were some freezers that kept breaking and

needing repairs. Rather than spend more and more money trying to fix them, the team decided to remove the freezers and replace them with a seating area so that people could enjoy their deli food in-store.

To decorate the space, they turned to local artists. Dull brought in local artist Karan Sargent to become the Art Director. “I’d go out and scout for artists at shows. I’d ask them to come in and we’d pick out what would fill the area up,” Sargent explained. “Then I kind of stood back and waited to hear what the customers would say. The feedback started coming in and customers were telling me, ‘This is now my go-to place for gifts.’ We were thrilled.”

Despite overcoming the challenges prompted by Publix’s opening, tragedy struck the market soon again. On the evening of December 30, 2022, an electrical fire broke out, consuming one side of the building in flames. With a side of the building ruined, destroyed goods, and smoke damage, the future of the business seemed uncertain to outsiders. However, for the Apple Market team, what could’ve been a devastating end to a business became another opportunity to grow stronger, reconstruct and come back better than ever.

In the aftermath of the trag -

edy, the Apple family turned to the people who are always there for them when things get tough—the community. Seeing the community’s love for the small artists and artisans section, they decided to incorporate this section into the post-fire plan. So, when the time came to rebuild, the Apple Market team decided to expand upon this section of the store and feature more local artists and artisans than ever before.

According to Sargent, the gallery currently features over 50 artists, but they’ve had as many as 70 artists featured in the past. She fondly refers to the newly expanded art section as “the most unique art gallery in a grocery store.”

“Any kind of talent is what I’m looking for. We have both emerging artists and some well-known names here that are part of other galleries, like Quayside and Blue Moon. We also have a lot of emerging artists who come here, and they’re realizing their dream come true—selling art for the very first time,” Sargent said.

In addition to the expanded art gallery, Apple Market now hosts art workshops for members of the community that are looking to get crafty. Sargent hosts the workshops in the back of the store, right by the gallery. Stay tuned

From a multibillion-dollar corporation coming to town to a sudden building fire, the Apple Market has been through a lot in its years here in Pensacola. “The past 27 years have been a roller coaster. Every time we think we overcome something, something knocks us down,” Dull said.

Despite the tragedy, the team has continued to work through it and overcome all of the challenges thrown their way.

“I’ll start crying if I talk too much about it. It’s a place where this family gets knocked down and because of their faith and because of the kind of people they are, they do everything they can to fight to come back. They’ve done it over and over again,” Rogers added.

SUNDAY’S CHILD ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF $120,000 IN GRANTS

Sunday’s Child, a Pensacola Bay Area member-based philanthropic group that promotes LGBTQ+ inclusion and equality by awarding grants to significant charitable and economic initiatives, recently awarded grants to six Pensacola Bay Area charities on June 25 at the organization’s 9th Annual Membership Meeting. The 182 members of Sunday’s Child funded and selected the projects and initiatives, which include: Stamped LGBTQ Film Festival, Community Health Northwest Florida, Re-Entry Alliance Pensacola., Dixon School of Arts and Sciences, Pensacola Little Theatre and Bright Bridge Ministries.

Each of the six organizations will receive $20,000 to fund their projects:

Stamped LGBTQ Film Festival’s grant “Growing Up: Expanding LGBTQIA+ Programs for Children and Families at Stamped Film Festival” will allow the festival to expand its programming and community reach to youth and families by expanding the festival beyond a singular theatre space.

Community Health Northwest Florida will use its “Closing the Treatment Loop for the LGBTQIA+” grant to expand its Unhoused Health Navigation program to pay for medication copays for financially needy members of the LGBTQIA+ community. This will include covering the full cost of medically necessary medications for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Re-Entry Alliance Pensacola, INC., which helps individuals returning from incarceration, will use its funds for “Modernizing and Outdated System” to modernize its technology and computer system to enhance data collection and facilitate better communication between departments.

Dixon School of Arts and Science’s grant “Dixon Cultural Immersion Lab” will allow the school to curate and expand its library

to create a safe space for kids to explore and learn through culturally diverse books and digital tools.

Pensacola Little Theatre will use the funds for their grant “On the Same Page: Race and Censorship at The Clark Family Cultural Center” to provide an educational opportunity for the community to better understand racial injustice and the relevant topic of censorship through live performance and professional engagement.

Bright Bridge Ministries will use the funds for their grant “A Comfortable Space is a Welcoming Place” to purchase a new HVAC unit for its dining hall and adjacent caseworker’s offices and life skills and recovery classrooms, allowing them to provide a comfortable space for the community served.

The City of Pensacola has announced the winners of the street sweeper naming contest, also unveiling fun new designs that reflect the winning names. The top three names were determined through a public voting process, with the winners as follows:

• Street Sweeper #1: Sweepy McSweepface

• Street Sweeper #2: Obi-Wan Cleanobi

• Street Sweeper #3: Lightning McClean

In addition to the three street sweeper names that were selected through the voting process, Mayor D.C. Reeves selected a bonus “Mayor’s Choice” name from the list of finalists:

• Street Sweeper #4 (Bonus - Mayor’s Choice): Dirt Reynolds City staff and Mayor D.C. Reeves reviewed more than 1,500 street sweeper name submissions from the public to select 12 finalists for the public vote, which drew more than 6,000 votes for the three street sweepers.

“I was blown away by the level of participation and incredible creativity our citizens showed through this contest,” Mayor Reeves said. “We definitely had a lot of fun with it,

and I hope the public did too. Keep an eye out for Sweepy McSweepface, Obi-Wan Cleanobi, Lightning McClean, and Dirt Reynolds out on our roadways, working hard to keep our city streets clean.”

The City of Pensacola has a fleet of eight street sweepers that remove an average of more than 4,700 tons of leaves, debris and trash from city streets each year. Street sweepers provide a significant environmental benefit by helping prevent debris from entering stormwater systems and eventually discharging into local waterways.

Street sweepers run 16 routes every month, sweeping approximately 326 miles of city roadways in addition to 65 miles of State of Florida roadways within city limits. City street sweepers also provide special event cleanup after parades and other largescale events. By maintaining a consistent street sweeping program, the City of Pensacola aims to continue to provide an aesthetic and clean environment for Pensacola residents and visitors.

NEW YORK YACHT CLUB AMERICAN MAGIC ANNOUNCES CORE TRAINING SQUAD FOR SUMMER 2023

The New York Yacht Club American Magic sailing squad was confirmed on Monday morning as the team launched their second AC40 in Barcelona following their relocation from Pensacola, FL.

The squad includes Olympic Gold Medalists Tom Slingsby and Paul Goodison, Olympic Bronze Lucas Calabrese, U.S. Olympians Andrew Campbell and Riley Gibbs, and Etchell World Champion Michael Menninger.

Under the leadership of Terry Hutchinson, Skipper and President of Sailing Operations, and Coach Tom Burnham, NYYC

American Magic has assembled a group comprising a mix of youthful talent and experienced sailors. Eleven athletes will embark on their first America’s Cup cycle, including Harry Melges, who was named US Sailing’s 2021 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year.

Hutchinson and Burnham have selected seven afterguard members and ten cyclors, showcasing the squad’s flexibility, as many sailors can fulfill multiple positions.

“We are fortunate to have assembled a strong sailing team. The squad represents a good balance of experience on the water and athletically with the cyclors. The process put forward by training coaches Baden Cashmore and Ben Day to develop the power plant of

SRIA INCREASES PUBLIC TROLLEY SERVICES FOR PENSACOLA BEACH AIR SHOW

To help alleviate traffic congestion for the Pensacola Beach Air Show, the Santa Rosa Island Authority (SRIA) is extending public transportation hours along the island on Friday, July 7, and is adding extra buses to the schedule on Saturday, July 8.

On Friday, July 7, the SRIA’s three, free open-air trolleys will begin transporting customers starting at 7:30 a.m. and extend their service to Park East, located a mile east of Portofino Resort, until 6 p.m. Following that, the regular route will resume until midnight.

On Saturday, July 8, starting at 6:30 a.m., the SRIA will have four buses in addition to the three open-air trolleys running and will extend their service area to Park East until 6 p.m. Following that, the three open-air trolleys will resume normal operations until midnight.

On Friday and Saturday, buses and trolleys will service passengers from Park East and Park West to Casino Beach throughout the day. Post-show, trolleys servicing Portofino Resort/Park East will be staged on Via de Luna directly across from Santa Rosa Island Authority (facing east). Trolleys servicing Park West will be staged on Ft. Pickens Rd. adjacent to The Sandshaker (facing west).

Due to extreme traffic and congestion buildup on Friday and Saturday, trolley service to the access road stops (Grand Marlin, Radical Rides/Laguna’s, Quietwater Beach, and the Boardwalk) will be temporarily suspended until 6 p.m.

The SRIA wants to remind all passengers that they will only be picked up and dropped off at designated trolley stops.

Passengers who wish to get back to their vehicles as soon as the air show ends need to be on the first fleet of buses leaving Casino Beach post-show. Due to the gridlock that occurs immediately following the air show, riders should expect to wait as long as 90 minutes for the trolleys or buses to return to Casino Beach if they are not on the first trip out.

The official 2023 Pensacola Beach Air Show will begin at approximately 11 a.m. Saturday. The free trolley and bus service is provided by the Santa Rosa Island Authority and Escambia County Area Transit (ECAT) handles the expert driving.

About the Santa Rosa Island Authority Pensacola Beach is owned by Escambia County, Fla., and is under the direction of the Santa Rosa Island Authority (SRIA). The SRIA was created by the Florida legislature in 1947 under Chapter 24500. The SRIA does not receive tax support from the taxpayers of the county. It is fully funded from lease fees collected from businesses and residences on the beach. The Island Authority board is made up of six members, five are named by members of the Escambia County Board of Commissioners whose term is the same as the commissioner who appointed them.

Registered voters on Pensacola Beach elect the sixth member. The elected member’s term is two years.

Having recently relocated from Pensacola, American Magic is now based in Barcelona for the final phase of the 37th America’s Cup campaign in 2024. The 37th America’s Cup will be held in Barcelona, Spain, in September and October 2024.

FDOH-ESCAMBIA: RESIDENTS AND VISITORS ENCOURAGED TO STAY SAFE IN AND AROUND THE WATER

As the outdoor temperature increases and individuals look for ways to cool off, the Florida Department of Health in Escambia County (FDOH-Escambia) wants to remind residents and visitors in Escambia County to use precautions and be safe while enjoying recreational water activities.

With pools, lakes, and other surrounding bodies of water in Florida, water safety is critical to prevent drownings. Children ages 1-4 years are more likely to drown in a home swimming pool than children ages 5-19 years, who are more likely to drown in natural bodies of water. Whether you are a parent or a community group member, everyone plays a role in drowning prevention. The goal is to keep water activities fun and safe for all as we move into the summer months.

Tips on Water Safety:

• Always keep your eyes on children in and around water, including pools and open bodies of water. Actively supervising and giving children your undivided attention when they are in or around water can help prevent drownings.

• Never leave a child alone around water.

• If your child is missing, check other pools or surrounding bodies of water.

• Have a phone nearby in case you need to call 911 in an emergency.

Beach Swimming: Swimming in open water is different than swimming in a pool. Even the strongest swim -

mer can get into trouble swimming in open water. Here are some tips for swimming at the beach:

• Stay alert to and obey the current safety flags:

° Double Red Flag: Very high hazard and water is closed to the public.

° Single Red Flag: High hazard with high surf and strong currents. Single Yellow Flag: Medium hazard with moderate surf and/or strong currents.

° Single Green Flag: Low hazard with calm conditions, but caution still advised.

° Single Purple Flag: Dangerous marine life.

Stay alert to rip tides and strong currents. If you get caught in a rip tide or strong current, don’t fight it. Swim parallel to the shore until you have passed through it. Learn to recognize and watch for dangerous waves and signs of rip tides — darker, narrow gaps of water heading offshore between areas of breaking waves and whitewater.

• Don’t swim alone. Even if you are a good swimmer, you never know when you might need help.
