ESTUARY PROGRAM TO AWARD $250,000 IN COMMUNITY GRANTS
The Pensacola & Perdido Bays Estuary Program is pleased to announce the opening of the 2023-2024 Community Grant Program funding opportunity. This program will fund action projects that serve to restore, preserve, connect, inform, and educate.
The PPBEP Community Grant Program will award $250,000 in total funding to help restore and protect our waters. Award amounts will range from $10,000 to $50,000. Local governments or nonstate entities (educational institutions and 501(c)3s) are eligible to submit a proposal for projects located within the Perdido and/or Pensacola watershed within Escambia, Santa Rosa, and/or Okaloosa counties.
The PPBEP is a stakeholder-driven, science-based organized charged with restoring and preserving the Pensacola and Perdido Bay Systems, and their associated watersheds. PPBEP is guided by a Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan, which serves as a blueprint for the restoration and preservation of the area and waterways. Through these actions, PPBEP’s vision is to create a healthy and sustainable environment, economy, and community.
The funding opportunity includes seven eligible project categories that align with the Estuary Program’s CCMP: Water Quality, Sedimentation, Habitat Restoration, Fish and Wildlife Conservation, Watershed Awareness and Education, Resilience, and Community Science. Over the past three years, PPBEP has awarded $700,000 to 26 projects in the community.
The deadline to apply is 11:59 p.m. CT on Aug. 3, 2023, and projects must be completed by May 31, 2024. Priority consideration will be given to “shovel ready” action projects and projects that inform, engage, and educate the community. Projects that leverage match, including volunteer efforts, will also receive priority consideration. The 2023-2024 grant recipients will be recognized at the Estuary Program’s Community Grant Symposium on Sept. 22 at the Bayview Community Center during National Estuaries Week. National Estuaries Week is a nationwide celebration of our bays and estuaries and the many benefits they provide to our local communities. The symposium will highlight the work completed by grant recipients that were funded by the 2022-2023 grant cycle. The public is invited to attend to learn more about the projects that were funded in our local communities.
2022-2023 awarded projects included:
• No-Till Seed Drill Rental Program –Blackwater Soil and Water Conservation District
• EscaRosa OysterCorps – Franklin’s Promise
• Empowering Students to Take Action: Aquatic Care Team – Navarre Beach Marine Science Station

The Community Grant Program is made possible through the support of the Florida Legislature. The Estuary Program offers their deepest appreciation to the Northwest Florida Legislative Delegation for their support, specifically Senator Broxson and Representative Andrade and for sponsoring the Program’s legislative funding request.

Deputy County Attorney Kristin Hual Receives Writing Award At Faca Conference
During the Florida Association of County Attorneys conference on Thursday, June 29, Deputy County Attorney Kristin Hual received the Writing Award from the FACA Board of Directors. The Writing Award recognizes those who have made significant contributions to FACA and its program through their leadership and dedication.
“Kristin has worked very hard to serve not just the Escambia County Attorney’s Office, but also our colleagues across the state,” said Escambia County Attorney Alison Rogers. “It is a very well-deserved honor!”
The Florida Association of Counties is a Florida nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to provide a forum for research, advice and discussion in the development of local government law, including technical assistance. Learn more at faca.fl-counties.com.
“We are proud to participate with Bissell for the first time for their ‘Empty the Shelters’ event,” said John Robinson, Director for the Escambia County Department of Animal Welfare. “This will provide opportunities for all of our great dogs and cats to find their new families this summer. Adopting a pet not only gives our homeless animals a second chance, but also creates space that will allow our organization to help many other animals in need of temporary housing. We have a large number of animals available for adoption that will make a great addition to your family.”
BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending pet homelessness, has partnered with MetLife Pet Insurance for the “Empty the Shelters” adoption event. With the shared goal of helping pets find and stay in loving homes, this collaboration will save lives by expanding the foundation’s reach to include more shelters across the country. BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Summer National “Empty the Shelters” will occur at more than 335 shelters in 44 states with pets available for adoption for just $50 or less, including the Escambia County Department of Animal Welfare.
“We are excited to team up with MetLife
Pet Insurance to offer 30 days of pet insurance at no cost to the adopter, as well as the opportunity to purchase an annual pet insurance policy, which could make a difference in helping adopters deal with their pet’s unexpected illness or injury,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “Veterinary costs add up quickly, and too often, pet owners forgo care or surrender their beloved pets when they can’t afford treatment. This collaboration could help to enable more pets in more communities to be adopted through ‘Empty the Shelters’ and can help facilitate adopters seeking treatment to keep their pets healthy and in their new homes.”
The Escambia County Animal Welfare and Adoption Center is located at 200 W. Fairfield Drive. Hours of operation are MondayFriday, 12-5 p.m., and Saturdays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, visit MyEscambia.com/animal-welfare. Follow the Escambia County Department of Animal Welfare on Facebook for animal welfare news, adoption events and more.
About BISSELL Pet Foundation:
