Social media has been a major ally throughout the pandemic. It’s been the primary way people have maintained social connections in a time when we all needed to be physically distant. Instead of physically attending a loved one’s wedding, we viewed it over Facebook Live. Instead of gathering at a restaurant to chat with friends, we sent TikTok videos and memes to each other’s DMs. In July 2020, the marketing firm Kepios Analysis found that the number of social media users increased by 10.5 percent, adding 376 million more users. TikTok reached the two billion downloads mark in April 2020. As physical interaction decreased, online interaction increased. But is social media healthy? That’s a difficult question to answer considering its many benefits, but social media is most certainly time-consuming. In the words of ancient Greek philosopher Theophrastus: “Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend.” Statista found that in 2019, global internet users, on average, spent 2 hours and 24 minutes on social media sites every day. In a month, that’s 4,320 minutes or 72 hours spent just scrolling through social media posts. The Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma explores society’s ever-increasing social media usage. The documentary shows how companies like Facebook, Google and Instagram use algorithms to make their platforms addicting. Perhaps one of the most impactful discoveries exposed in this documentary is that these companies harvest users’ data to then sell it to the highest bidder. In short, social media is free to users because the users are the ones being sold. This revelation has caused users, like me, to reevaluate how they use social media. I started November off with an unsettling discovery. I spend about five hours a day on social media. So monthly, that’s about 150 hours, or six days, total just spent scrolling through the virtual world. My first thought was “Well, that’s depressing.” I wasted, arguably, the most valuable commodity on Earth: time. While some might suggest it’s time to delete social media and all my accounts from my phone, it’s just not feasible— at least not in the 21st century. We’re still in the midst of a global pandemic, so deleting social media could mean severing myself from social interactions outside of my job and significant other. Also, as a journalist, social media is one of the main ways I stay connected to the happenings in the city. Facebook is my go-to

route for finding local events and unique stories. As a Gen Z and a journalist, I decided to limit my time spent on social media, rather than removing it altogether. I started with shutting off all of my notifications from my emails and apps, aside from my daily Duolingo reminders. My phone buzzed 20+ times a day from notifications alone, and with each buzz, I felt obligated to check if I received an important email or text message. Instead, it would be Facebook notifying me that a friend commented on my post. I, of course, would then take the bait by clicking the notification, and then boom, I’m sucked in— scrolling aimlessly for 30 minutes. Without notifications constantly dinging on my phone, I’m not as tempted to waste time on my phone. Next, I went into the Digital Wellbeing section of Settings on my phone and set a time limit on my most used apps: Facebook, TikTok and Instagram. I limited Facebook and Instagram to 15 minutes and TikTok, my most used app, to 30 minutes each day. This change limited my social media use to just one hour a day. Lastly, I made several changes to my privacy on these apps to prevent them from hemorrhaging my data. Putting a limit to the amount of time I spend on social media did wonders for my stress level and it helped me stay focused on my tasks. However, each time my phone would notify me that my time on social media was up, I couldn’t help but feel sad like I was going to miss out. Felipe Munoz, founder and owner of Empathic Practice, summed up my feelings perfectly. “In the media in general, we’re always comparing ourselves and creating these expectations of who we should be based on other people, and social media kind of exacerbated that,” Munoz said. “It’s

amazing how social media is a platform where everyone can thrive and become a personality, an entrepreneur or an influencer. But it takes a toll on mental health. There’s always something new, there’s always a new trend, there’s always a new hashtag, and there’s always a new person to follow, that you need to keep up with, to the point that you get exhausted.” Munoz has an interesting background. He started his career in the fast-paced marketing industry. For 18 years, he focused on staying one step ahead of social media trends and adapted ads to fit the ever-shifting audience. “It took a huge toll on me to the point that I was having panic attacks and high anxiety,” Munoz said. Eventually, his anxiety led him to therapy where he learned about mental health. This experience caused Munoz to leave his stressful job behind and pursue a career in mental health, so he received his MBA in positive psychology. Munoz started Empathic Practice where he is a Mindset, Mindfulness and Meditation Coach. Munoz has a number of clients who come to him because of their social media use. Some come because they feel anger, anxiety or depression as a result of comparing themselves to people online or they’re feeling overwhelmed by the immense virtual world. Munoz guides clients through these feelings by teaching them to be mindful of these emotions and their triggers. “When we’re working with mindfulness, the core of the work is awareness, so it’s realizing when you are feeling anxiety, stress or anger. Once you identify those feelings, don’t judge them,” Munoz said. “You just look at where they’re coming from. Let’s say every time you open Instagram or Facebook, you’re feeling anxious. You don’t need to delete your account, but just delete the app from your phone. Make it

harder for you to immerse yourself into this universe that is causing a large amount of stress. Deleting those apps actually makes a lot of difference. It might not reduce the amount of time that you use your phone, but you’re gonna end up using other things like deleting emails.” Munoz encourages people to opt for an activity that is more beneficial than social media, such as reading a book. This tip helped me get through reducing my social media usage. Whenever I felt the need to scroll through my phone, I would do a few language lessons on Duolingo. Unfortunately, social media doesn’t only affect mental health. It can also impact faceto-face relationships, especially ones with significant others. Relationship trainer at Bayside Marriage Counseling, Julie M. Nise, LPC, LMFT, CT, has been helping married couples figure out what skills they need to be successful in the long haul for the past 16 years. Nise explained that rather than focusing on the issues the couple has gone through, which is what relationship counselors do, Nise, as a relationship trainer, concentrates on the future of the relationship. Nise believes that social media negatively affects relationships outside of the virtual world because it takes time away from them. “The reality is, being a spouse, being a husband, or being a wife, is your number one job. You don’t have a job more important than that, if you’re married. Second to that comes being a parent. You also have to be an employee, perhaps, or a son or a daughter, a housekeeper, cook, an errand runner, etc. The amount of time people waste on social media directly impacts all of those far more

WE’RE SOCIAL!

important things,” Nise said. “In a prioritization list, being on social media should be way down at the bottom. Every minute you’re on social media, you’re not focusing on one of your other priorities. That is a recipe for disconnection, isolation, problems in your marriage and problems with your kids.” Nise’s solution to social media negatively affecting relationships is to be aware of it and actively work to change it. “If they think they can still keep the same activity going on social media and somehow magically change the disconnect in their relationship or become more aware of what their children are needing or doing, that’s not going to happen,” Nise explained. “There has to be an acceptance that something needs to change, and then they probably need to seek some guidance on how to change it to get better in line with their priorities.” This is where Nise and Munoz’s advice overlap. It’s crucial for people to be aware of how many hours they are spending on social media. Before I started writing this article, I had no idea how much time I had been taking away from my relationship with my partner, passions and peace of mind. Time is fleeting and sparse, and I don’t want to spend it gazing into how others live it. I just want to live it. As Munoz says: “When the fear of missing out takes over our mind, we may end up missing out on what matters the most: our presence in the present.”

TWO UWF TEAMS PLACE IN TOP 5 IN NATIONAL ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE COMPETITION PENSACOLA, FLA. – FEB. 1, 2021 Two University of West Florida student teams showcased their Artificial Intelligence skills on a national stage. The UWF teams each placed in the top 5 of the prestigious AI Tracks at Sea Challenge. Hosted by the Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific and the Naval Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Coordination Office, 32 teams from public and private institutions across the country participated in the competition. Various research institutions including those from the Ivy League, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Hispanic Serving Institutes competed in the $200,000-prize challenge. UWF graduate computer science students Tobias Jacob, Raffaele Galliera and Muddasar Ali placed third, winning $35,000 for the UWF Department of Computer Science. The students participated in the competition as members of UWF’s AI and Data Analytics (AIDA) Research Group. Dr. Thomas Reichherzer, chair of computer science, served as the sponsor and Dr. Sikha Bagui, professor in computer science, served as the faculty advisor for the AIDA Research Group. UWF computer science major Zach Mueller, a machine learning intern at Novetta Solutions LLC mentored the students. “When we found out we finished third we couldn’t believe it,” said Galliera,

who, like Ali, is pursuing dual master’s degrees from UWF and Ferrara University in Italy. “That whole morning, we talked about the things we went through during the challenge. We were so happy and so proud of what we accomplished.” The second UWF team, ArgoTracks, finished fifth and secured $20,000 for the Department of Intelligent Systems & Robotics. The team consisted of Bhavyansh Mishra, a doctoral student in intelligent systems & robotics, and mechanical engineering majors Brendon Ortolano and Luke Fina. Dr. Hakki Erhan Sevil, intelligent systems & robotics assistant professor, served as their sponsor and faculty advisor. The students are members of the Sevil Research Group at UWF. UWF alumnus Carson Wilber, a research associate at Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition, mentored the students. ArgoTracks formed its team a month after the challenge started. Mishra learned about the challenge from Wilber and then contacted Sevil who assisted him in finding teammates. The students put in long hours to catch up and submitted their entry just a few hours before the deadline. “Computer vision is my bread and butter, so I just hopped onto it as soon as Carson told me,” Mishra said. “Considering the fact we only had one month compared to most teams that had two months, we felt good about where we placed.”

CITY OF PENSACOLA CELEBRATES COMPLETION OF NEW BAYVIEW COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER MAYOR, CITY OFFICIALS COMMEMORATE THE OCCASION WITH A RIBBON CUTTING FOR BAYVIEW COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER AND BAYVIEW SENIOR CENTER Mayor Grover Robinson, local elected officials and City of Pensacola staff celebrated the completion of the award-winning Bayview Community Resource Center with a ribbon cutting today, Friday, Jan. 29, at Bayview Park, commemorating a highly anticipated and historic day for the Pensacola community. The ribbon cutting, which was a limited attendance, invitation-only event due to COVID-19, also celebrated renovations at the Bayview Senior Center. “This is certainly a building that we’re very proud to get open,” Mayor Grover Robinson said at the event. “It’s been some time, but it has touched the fabric of who we are as a community in this park... We’re proud to have such an incredible, forward-looking, beautiful building here as a part of the city.” Mayor Robinson was joined by District 4 City Councilman Jared Moore, Former Mayor Ashton Hayward, District 5 City Councilwoman Teniadé Broughton, Escambia County Commission Chairman and District 4 Commissioner Robert Bender, and members of the community to celebrate the new Bayview Community Resource Center, which will provide additional opportunities for residents to enjoy the waterfront at beautiful Bayview Park, the city’s largest public space with waterfront access. Bayview Community Resource Center architect Caldwell Associates Architects and contractor Hewes & Company Construction were recognized at the event, along with Bayview Senior Center architect TOWNES + Architects and contractor A.E. New Jr. Inc. City of Pensacola Parks & Recreation and Public Works & Facilities staff were also recognized for their efforts and hard work on both community center projects. The approximately 13,000-squarefoot Bayview Community Resource Center is designed to enhance connectivity to Bayou Texar, featuring decks and balconies offering sweeping waterfront views and waterfront

access. Bayou Texar is a protected waterway and an important natural resource in the Pensacola community, and the new center will also be used to educate the community, promote water safety and encourage environmental responsibility. As a tribute to Bayview Park’s rich history, the sign at the building’s main entrance pays homage to the old 30foot diving tower that was used in the park dating back to the early 1920s. The Bayview Community Resource Center features approximately 3,500 square feet of event space and 4,000 square feet of indoor storage for kayaks and other equipment, designed to meet the diverse needs of community groups and residents. The state-of-the-art facility will specialize in community spaces for watersports activities, community gatherings and event rentals. The City of Pensacola’s outdoor and volunteer programs will now be based out of Bayview Community Resource Center. In addition to a variety of programs and events for residents of all ages, the center will offer equipment rentals including kayaks, stand up paddleboards, pedal boats, bikes and more. The city broke ground on the approximately $8 million Bayview Community Resource Center in 2018, replacing the former community center that was demolished in 2015. The Bayview Community Resource Center was awarded the American Institute of Architecture Florida Northwest 2020 Design Award, and the Bayview Senior Center was also recognized by the Florida Recreation and Parks Association with a Facility Showcase Award for renovations at the center. “We are building the community – and have been doing that for a long time – building the community that people want to be in...,” Mayor Robinson said. “We’re excited about the possibilities of what this community center offers all of our citizens.” Bayview Community Resource Center is located at 2000 E Lloyd St. in Pensacola. For more information about City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation facilities and programming, visit PlayPensacola.com or contact Parks and Recreation at 436-5670.

Each team was tasked with developing a computer vision system capable of plotting the tracks of shipping traffic exclusively using the passive sensing capability of a single onboard camera. Current traffic avoidance software relies on an automatic identification system and radar for tracking other craft and avoiding collisions. In a contested environment, emitting radar energy presents a vulnerability to detection by adversaries. Organizers provided each team a dataset consisting of recorded camera imagery of vessel traffic along with the recorded GPS track of a vessel of interest that was seen in the imagery. Submitted solutions were evaluated against additional camera data correlated to recorded vessel tracks. The same vessel and the same instrumentation were used in both the competition dataset and the judging dataset. Judging criteria was based on track accuracy and overall processing time.

The two UWF teams were among only five that submitted solutions that worked. Ten of the teams submitted solutions that only partially worked or failed to work, and the remaining teams failed to submit solutions. “It was really difficult because the data they gave us wasn’t preprocessed, the camera wasn’t calibrated and we didn’t have a lot of data,” said Jacob, who is pursuing a master’s degree at UWF after earning his bachelor’s degree from RWTH Aachen University in Germany. “We had many moments where we thought, OK, this isn’t going to work, and then we always found a way to make it work.” For more information on the AI Tracks at Sea Challenge, visit challenge.gov/ challenge/AI-tracks-at-sea/. LAWMAKER DEFENDS MINIMUM WAGE PROPOSAL CHRISTINE SEXTON NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE --- A Republican senator looking to alter Florida’s newly adopted $15-an-hour minimum wage mandate defended his proposal on Monday amid a growing chorus of criticism. Senate Judiciary Chairman Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, said his proposal to amend the state Constitution to allow the Legislature to exempt convicted felons and people under 21 from the new minimum-wage requirements would help them get jobs in the future. Brandes said studies indicate minimum wage requirements have a “disparate impact” on low-skilled workers, such as teenagers. He said he believes that “recently released incarcerated felons” also would be negatively impacted by the higher minimum wage, which is why he included felons in the proposal (SJR 854) filed last week. “Those populations generally have an unemployment (rate) of 25 to 30 percent which is five or six times the state average unemployment rate. As the minimum wage rises, the evidence suggests it would get even harder for them (to get jobs),” he said. But Florida AFL-CIO lobbyist Rich Templin said Brandes’ proposal isn’t the answer to the goal of ensuring everyone can get hired. “We understand Senator Brandes’ concern about these workforce segments, but denying them a new constitutional right to a near-living wage is not the way to do it,” Templin said. “It’s state-sanctioned discrimination.” Despite opposition from business groups, Florida voters in November approved gradually boosting the state’s minimum wage, currently $8.65 an hour, to $15 an hour by Sept. 30, 2026. Under the constitutional amendment, the minimum wage will go to $10 this September and increase by $1 each year until it reaches $15. The amendment was self-executing and did not need legislative action, though it authorized the Legislature to pass statutes to increase the minimum wage further or to increase fines for employers who violate the minimum wage. Brandes’ proposal would allow the

Legislature to provide a reduced minimum wage for workers under age 21, for workers convicted of felonies, for state prisoners and for “other hard-tohire employees.” The proposal doesn’t define who those hard-to-hire employees are and would leave that up to lawmakers to decide. A super-majority of the Legislature would need to approve Brandes’ proposal because it would be a constitutional amendment. If it clears the House and Senate during the upcoming legislative session, it would need to be approved by 60 percent of Florida voters during the 2022 elections. Well-known Orlando trial attorney John Morgan provided much of the financial backing for last year’s ballot measure to raise the minimum wage. Morgan went on social media to criticize Brandes’ proposal. “Many in Florida still hope for slave wages. The (ballot) initiative was clear and unambiguous. The people heard all the arguments and spoke loud and clear,” Morgan posted on his Twitter account last week. ”Just another example of why politicians are hated.” Brandes said the exemptions in his proposal are only temporary, but the measure contains no time limits on how long someone could be excluded from earning the higher minimum wage --- other than the possibility a worker could turn 21 and be entitled to a raise. Brandes said his goal was to keep “low-skilled employees” working and said the proposal would give employers the ability to develop what he called “training wage” programs. “We are asking the voters to let the Legislature consider these issues,” Brandes said. “Because without this, there really isn’t a mechanism to quickly and at scale address this problem.” But Templin said Florida could ban employers from asking whether job applicants are convicted felons as a way to prevent discrimination that fuels unemployment. Templin also said there is a “faulty assumption that many of us have that anyone under 21 is a high school kid from a good home working to earn money over the summer” and said the exemption for people under 21 is “horrible.”

NO GUARANTEES ON WORKERS’ COMP COVID-19 CHANGES NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF The Senate will “look” at coronavirus-related workers’ compensation claims during this year’s legislative session, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said Monday. But Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, made no promises the Senate would make changes to ensure frontline health care workers and teachers can tap into workers’ compensation benefits. A state Division of Workers’ Compensation report showed that as of Dec. 31, 13,409 workers’ compensation claims had been filed by health care workers and educators and that nearly 46 percent of the claims were denied. The denial rate for those workers exceeded the overall denial rate of 43 percent. “I think we are going to look at that as part of the overall pandemic committee,” Brandes said, referring to the Senate Select Committee on Pandemic Preparedness and Response. Workers’ compensation is a no-fault system meant to protect workers and employers. It is supposed to provide workers who are injured on the job access to medical benefits they need to be made whole. In exchange for providing those benefits, employers generally cannot be sued in court for causing in-

juries. Florida’s workers’ compensation laws provide coverage for “occupational diseases” that are characteristic of particular trades or jobs. But the term excludes “all ordinary diseases of life to which the general public is exposed,” unless the incidences of diseases are substantially higher in particular professions. Brandes is the primary Senate sponsor of a proposal (SB 72) that would provide broad immunity to most businesses from coronavirus-related lawsuits. But the bill specifically excludes health-care providers from the protections. Brandes said Monday during a news conference outside Centre Point Health & Rehabilitation in Tallahassee that the bill contained “bright line issues” where there is broad legislative support. About 31 percent of the 93,228 workers’ compensation claims filed in 2020 in Florida were related to COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus. Payments on those claims accounted for less than 8 percent of the $727,329,103 workers’ compensation payments last year, according to the state report. Attempts to reach Sen. Danny Burgess, a Zephyrhills Republican who chairs the Senate Select Committee on Pandemic Preparedness and Response, were unsuccessful.

SETTLEMENT REACHED IN SPANISHLANGUAGE BALLOT FIGHT DARA KAM, JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE --- Ending a legal battle that started before the 2018 elections, a federal judge on Monday approved a settlement in which 31 counties agreed to take steps to provide Spanish-language ballots and other materials to voters. The settlement, approved by Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker, calls for the counties to provide Spanish-language ballots and vote-by-mail applications, translations of elections websites and access to Spanish-language hotlines for voter assistance. The case centered on allegations that elections officials in the counties had not complied with part of the federal Voting Rights Act related to Spanish speakers who were educated in Puerto Rico. The counties are Alachua, Bay, Brevard, Citrus, Clay, Columbia, Duval, Escambia, Flagler, Hernando, Highlands, Indian River, Jackson, Lake, Leon, Levy, Manatee, Marion, Martin, Monroe, Okaloosa, Okeechobee, Pasco, Putnam, St. Johns, St. Lucie, Santa Rosa, Sarasota, Sumter, Taylor, and Wakulla. Charlotte County also was a defendant in the case but did not sign on to the settlement, according to court documents. The settlement, filed at the court on Monday, is slated to remain in effect through 2030. Walker in 2019 issued a preliminary injunction requiring the 32 counties to

GUNS AT CHURCH BILL CLEARS SENATE PANEL JIM TURNER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE --- A proposal that would expand the authority of people to carry concealed firearms at religious institutions began moving forward Monday in the Florida Senate. In a party-line vote, the Republicancontrolled Senate Judiciary Committee backed the measure (SB 498), which would allow people with concealedweapons licenses to bring guns on properties that churches, synagogues or other religious institutions share with schools. Florida law generally allows people to carry concealed weapons at religious institutions, but it bars being armed on school properties. That leads to people being prevented from carrying guns on properties shared by religious institutions and schools. While the bill seeks to lift that prohibition, property owners could still stop people from carrying firearms, said bill sponsor Joe Gruters, a Sarasota Republican who also chairs the Republican Party of Florida. “The church would be authorized to be able to do whatever they want in terms of restrictions,” Gruters said. “They don’t have to allow people to carry guns. They could say, ‘Only carry guns during certain times or during certain periods or certain days.’ But essentially, the church would have the same ability as the other churches have now.” Sen. Tina Polsky, D-Boca Raton, said the proposed change would create “total confusion” at school properties shared with religious institutions. “Obviously, a determination was made that guns are just too dangerous,

take a series of steps, including providing Spanish-language ballots, in time for the March 2020 presidential primary election. The case targeted the 32 counties because other counties provided Spanishlanguage ballots or were not identified as having Puerto Rican populations, according to Walker’s preliminary injunction. The lawsuit, filed in 2018, included Secretary of State Laurel Lee and Alachua County Supervisor of Elections Kim Barton as defendants. But following a federal appeals-court ruling in a separate elections case, Walker granted Lee’s request to be dismissed from the lawsuit, deciding that plaintiffs lacked “standing” to pursue claims against her. Amid the litigation, Lee established new rules affecting Spanish-speaking Floridians who were educated in Puerto Rico. But plaintiffs, including Marta Valentina Rivera Madera and a coalition of groups, argued that the rules don’t go far enough to ensure such voters have access to Spanish-language ballots. Barton, who has been a representative of supervisors of elections in the 32 counties, in September asked Walker to dismiss the case, arguing that she was complying with the preliminary injunction in addition to following the new rules. But Walker allowed the case to move forward. Under the settlement, supervisors in the 31 counties agreed to provide access to a “county-specific hotline to assist Spanish-speaking voters” during all early voting hours, all hours when voting takes place on Election Day and all hours after Election Day in which voters can “cure” ballot deficiencies.

accidentally to go off or on purpose,” Polsky said. “I don’t understand why, because there’s a church that operates on a school property or has a school on the premises or in the basement, why suddenly they need to be armed.” A similar proposal reached the Senate floor nearly three years ago, just as lawmakers’ attention shifted to a Feb. 14, 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Since then, the proposal has fared better in the House, which approved it in a 79-35 vote in 2019. It did not pass the Senate. Longtime National Rifle Association lobbyist Marion Hammer, representing the Unified Sportsmen of Florida, said the proposal is about restoring the private property rights of churches, synagogues and other religious institutions. “People who go to church are being deprived of the same rights that they have when they go shopping and into a business or a private property of an organization or entity,” Hammer told the committee. “Just because the church has a private child-care program or private preschool program does not mean the government can hijack its private property.” The proposal drew opposition from the Florida PTA, the League of Women Voters of Florida and the Florida Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence. Pointing to massacres at religious institutions in Charleston, S.C. and Pittsburgh, Trish Neely of the League of Women Voters of Florida suggested alternatives to address concerns about increased violence, from limiting access points to hiring trained security. “Smart people can craft smart solutions without including guns,” Neely added. Gruters proposal is scheduled to next go to the Senate Criminal Justice Committee, which is chaired by Sen. Jason Pizzo, a North Miami Beach Democrat.
