or attendees, a night at the symphony is about more than a love of music. It’s also the anticipation of the performance over dinner, dressing up in your favorite clothes, greeting the ushers to help find your seats, mingling with your neighbors and reveling in the sheer magic and communal awe of 60 to 80 musicians playing in harmony to pieces that range from hundreds of years old to contemporary compositions. tacular can be enjoyed in-person or virtually. “I’m most excited about the orchestra being able to perform for more people and with more concerts than we were able to last year,” Barrow said. “The energy from an enthusiastic, live audience is really powerful fuel for us. These past 18 months or so have really made me appreciate the moments of music and the community experiences that make Pensacola such a great place to live. I don’t think I took performances for granted in the past, but I certainly cherish them more than ever these days. Making music with great colleagues and sharing that with your friends, family and community is truly a privilege.” This community focus is at the heart of what the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra strives to do both on and off stage. Through the “Beyond the Stage” programs, the symphony utilizes community engagement programs to bring musi-

Behind the scenes, the work that goes into producing an evening of music includes the careful selection of pieces, dozens of hours of rehearsal, the lifetime of work and skill of the orchestra and conductor and a full year’s worth of work in hiring staff, gathering equipment and selling tickets. The Pensacola Symphony Orchestra kicked off its 2021-2022 season at opening night on October 16 at the historic Pensacola Saenger Theatre in downtown Pensacola. This season marks the symphony’s return to a full calendar and first indoor full-capacity concerts since February 2020. Pe n s a c o l a S y m p h o ny Orchestra Executive Director Bret Barrow explained that the symphony is still closely monitoring public health and safety and actively encouraging masks to be worn inside the Saenger Theatre as well as offering six concerts via live stream for those that prefer to watch from home. The five-concert Masterworks Series and Russian Spec-

cal education, performances and mentorships to individuals in schools, hospitals and neighborhoods. Throughout the pandemic, the symphony also relied on technology and its program “Virtually Together” to broadcast music on YouTube for the community. One of the other innovations born out of the pandemic are the community concerts called “PSO in the Park,” which feature a small ensemble of musicians in different parks and outdoor venues. These free concerts will continue this season and are scheduled for April 3 and May 8, 2022.

as the Music Director of the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, explained that choosing the music for the season is a delicate balance between variety and context. “Audiences like to hear their personal favorites, yet at the same time, everybody is also interested in hearing something new and intriguing,” Rubardt said. “The goal is to capitalize on that variety by placing works together in a context where they illuminate each other. Most programs start with a single piece that is speaking to me, or that I feel would be a particularly good fit for the orchestra

I strive to balance the styles and nationalities across the concerts as a whole, leading to a season that will draw people in by nurturing their engagement with this amazing art form.” “Our mission is to foster the musical culture of this community,” Barrow explained. “We want to eliminate barriers to participation and we also want an authentic experience that speaks to young people, and to older people. Orchestral music ranges from film score and video game soundtracks to the storied masterpieces created hundreds of years ago, and we like all of it. It all resonates differently depending on your own experiences and background. That’s why we work to share experiences that connect with children, families, adults, and seniors, and often those concerts are widely different in order to do so. I’m excited about the future of our orchestra and the ways in which we’re exploring opportunities for greater service across generations and throughout the community.” Echoing that same sentiment, Peter Rubardt, celebrating his 25th anniversary

and the audience. From there, I set other pieces around it that resonate, paying attention to length, difficulty, expense, audience appeal, orchestra size, etc. I also strive to balance the styles and nationalities across the concerts as a whole, leading to a season that will draw people in by nurturing their engagement with this amazing art form.” Rubardt also explained that diversity in the orchestra field and in programming itself is of the utmost importance to better represent entire communities. “Diversity has been top of mind in the orchestra field, and it is an important topic that we’ve been discussing at all levels of the PSO. I believe that a diverse society is richer and stronger, and the arts can be a powerful agent for that,” he said. “One path is programming music of composers who are minorities. We are playing music by George Walker and Duke Ellington this season,

WE’RE SOCIAL!

and I’m excited to share these pieces with Pensacola. Another path is to plant seeds through more work in music education. The path to being a member of a professional orchestra starts with elite training at a young age. Far too often that excludes people of color, leaving us trying to nurture diversity while the orchestra on stage remains nearly all white. All of these ideas are on the table right now, and I’m quite sure they will impact our path going forward.” In addition to musical selections by jazz greats like Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Spencer Williams, the Pensacola Symphony Ochestra will also be melding music and poetry together this season during the popular Beethoven and Blue Jeans performance with readings from local poets Jamey Jones and Charles McCaskill, Jr. “Another path is to use the arts to put a topic on the table for reflection, and that’s what led me to Charles McCaskill and his poem that reflects on John Sunday, an important chapter of Pensacola history. I’ve invited Charles to read his poem while we play the George Walker’s Lyric for Strings. It is my hope that the arts of music and verse will combine in a way that is meaningful to performers and audience members of all backgrounds,” Rubardt said. Creating these meaningful performances and sharing music with the community is what drives the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. With a packed season calendar and several free community concerts scheduled, there are plenty of opportunities to hear the orchestra on stage at the Saenger Theatre, cozied up on a blanket at a local park or virtually from the comfort of your couch. Season tickets are still on sale, and more information can be found at pensacolasymphony.com. 

DELTA ADDS NONSTOP FLIGHT TO NEW YORK FROM PENSACOLA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT After a robust summer, Delta isn’t slowing down in bringing back more flights and destinations for New York’s business and leisure travelers alike. Delta Air Lines has announced it will begin daily, nonstop service from Pensacola International Airport to LaGuardia Airport on Dec. 18, 2021. The Atlantabased carrier says the service is scheduled to run through May 4, 2022. LaGuardia Airport, located in the Queens Borough of New York City, is the third busiest airport in New York, offering connections to Richmond, Virginia, Detroit, Michigan, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and many other destinations. Delta’s daily flight will be operated by Republic Airways on the ERJ 175. The flight will arrive in Pensacola at 11:30 a.m. CST and depart for New York at 12:30 p.m. CST. Typical flight time is 2.5 hours. “It’s always great to see more destination options at Pensacola International Airport, both for our residents looking to travel and for visitors who want to experience everything our beautiful city has to offer,” Mayor Grover Robinson said. “Having a direct connection between Pensacola and an iconic destination like New York City speaks volumes about the success of our airport, and I look forward to continuing to grow and offer even more flight options for travelers.” The added route is part of a larger plan by Delta to add more than 100 additional departures out of New York

airports JFK and LGA compared to the Summer 2021 schedule. Delta offered this flight to LaGuardia during the summer, but only on Saturdays. This summer, Pensacola experienced a passenger increase of over 20% compared to 2019. “We’re adding 25% more capacity this fall to meet the significant demand for business and international travel going into next year,” said Joe Esposito, Delta’s Senior Vice President – Network Planning. “We continue to provide more choice and convenience while rebuilding our global connectivity and delivering what Delta does best – putting our customers first with exceptional, reliable service and a premium travel experience.” “We are excited to have this route back at Pensacola International Airport with our partners at Delta,” Airport Director Matt Coughlin said. “This daily route is a testament to the growth of the airport and the Pensacola community. Our efforts are not going unnoticed here in Pensacola, the Gateway to the Gulf Coast.” Travelers using this service are encouraged to stay informed on the COVID-19 restrictions and requirements for New York by visiting coronavirus.health.ny.gov/covid19-travel-advisory. FLORIDA GETS TOURISM BOOST IN THIRD QUARTER JIM TURNER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE --- U.S. travelers to Florida during the third quarter of this year easily exceeded numbers from the same period in 2020, as COVID-19 vaccinations were widely available and cruise ships were back on the seas. More important for the state’s tourism-marketing agency Visit Florida, the estimated total of 32.517 million tourists between July 1 and Sept. 30 bested --- by just over 0.3 percent --- the overall number of visitors in the third quarter of 2019 before the pandemic began. The numbers were released Monday as the agency seeks another $50 million in state funding in next year’s budget, hopes lawmakers will extend its life beyond 2023 and anticipates getting a boost from the return of international travelers as the federal government this month reopened borders to visitors. Visit Florida President and CEO Dana Young has said international visitors are vital to the state’s economy because they tend to spend more time and money than domestic travelers. “I’m not a betting woman and I don’t make a lot of predictions, but I will tell you that I feel very, very good about

our position internationally when those borders open,” Young told state lawmakers on Oct. 11. “We are going to see a lot of Brits and Germans and Canadians and Mexicans and Colombians and Brazilians coming to our state and spending money, starting in November.” Young also recently met with travel agents, tour operators and airline representatives in London. Under the federal plan, non-citizens visiting the United States have to show proof of vaccination and negative COVID-19 tests taken within three days of departure. With marketing focused primarily across the U.S., Visit Florida recorded an estimated 91.484 million visitors in the first nine months of 2021, up from 60.213 million in the first nine months of 2020, which included the massive global closures due to the pandemic. The vast majority of this year’s tourists, 88.44 million, have come from other parts of the U.S. The third-quarter numbers also marked the return of the cruise industry in July and August and reflected increased attendance at the state’s theme parks, which a year ago were just reopening from the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. GULF POWER CUSTOMERS FACE STORM COSTS JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA For customers of Northwest Florida’s Gulf Power, the barrage of storms during the past few years could mean they will pay extra on their bills through 2024 to cover costs of restoring electricity. The utility filed documents Friday at the state Public Service Commission that detail proposals for recouping costs related to Hurricane Sally and Hurricane Zeta, which caused power outages and damage in the Panhandle in 2020. The proposals dovetail with costs the utility is recovering for Hurricane Michael, which devastated parts of Northwest Florida in 2018. The bottom line is that many homeowners would pay roughly $10 or $11 a month to cover storm costs through 2024. Utilities typically are allowed to pass along costs to consumers for restoring power after major storms, and the issue was included in a 2017 Gulf rate settlement. But utilities need approval from the Public Service Commission to collect the money and have to show that the expenses are justified. Gulf sustained massive damage from the Category 5 Hurricane Michael, which made landfall in 2018 east of Panama City. To cover its Michaelrelated costs, it has been collecting amounts from customers that, for example, translate to $8 a month for residential customers who use 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity a month. Those charges are expected to continue until October 2023, according to the new filings. The Public Service Commission in March approved a proposal by Gulf to begin recouping money for costs related to Hurricane Sally, which made landfall in September 2020 in Alabama but caused heavy damage in the Pensacola area.

Gulf, which merged with Florida Power & Light this year, said in Friday filings that its final Sally-related restoration costs were $146.3 million. The March approval allowed the utility to collect $3 a month from residential customers who use 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity --- a common benchmark in the industry. That $3 for Hurricane Sally is in addition to the $8 a month charge from Michael. But in the new filings, Gulf is asking to increase the Hurricane Sally charges in November 2023, after the Michael charges end. For the following year, Gulf would collect $10 a month from residential customers who use 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. The idea is to more quickly recoup the Hurricane Sally costs, which otherwise could take as long as six years to collect. “Accordingly, Gulf submits that its proposed increase will strike an appropriate balance between ensuring timely cost recovery and mitigating customer bill impacts,” one of the filings said. Hurricane Zeta, which made landfall in October 2020 in Louisiana, caused the least damage in Gulf’s service area. But in a filing Friday, it proposed collecting the $10.1 million over a two-month period from Nov. 1, 2024, to Dec. 31, 2024, after the Hurricane Sally charges end. The utility would charge $9.34 a month for residential customers who use 1,000 kilowatt hours. “Approval of this request will best serve the interests of administrative efficiency and rate stability and will be in the best interests of customers by reducing the duration of the storm surcharge to two months,” Gulf said in the filing. It was not immediately clear Monday when the Public Service Commission will consider the proposals. While utilities commonly use 1,000 kilowatt hours as a benchmark, actual electricity consumption varies widely.

tine McCarthy said in a company earnings call last Wednesday that revenue from parks and accompanying business units --- including cruise operations --- for the second half of 2021 is up 26 percent, with attendance up across the board. A day earlier, SeaWorld Entertainment reported its quarterly attendance was 7.2 million, an increase of 5.7 million guests from the same period of 2020. However, the number was down by 900,000, or 11 percent, from the third quarter of 2019. In an earnings call on Oct. 28, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said Universal Orlando --- a division of Comcast’s NBCUniversal --- had “the most profitable quarter in its history despite having virtually no international guests due to COVID-related travel restraints.” For Visit Florida, the third-quarter numbers were dominated by domestic travelers, accounting for 31.205 million tourists, a 55.3 percent jump from the third quarter of 2020. Overall, including international tourists, the third-quarter numbers were up 60.4 percent from the third quarter of 2020.

HOUSE POISED TO PASS OSHA MEASURE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF After rejecting a series of Democratic amendments, the Florida House on Tuesday prepared to pass a bill that could be a first step toward the state regulating worker safety and moving away from oversight by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The Republican-controlled House is expected to pass the measure (HB 5B) on Wednesday, the third day of a special legislative session called by Gov. Ron DeSantis to take aim at vaccination and mask mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic. The bill would direct DeSantis to develop a plan for the state to take control of worker safety and health issues. The governor would be required to report back to the Legislature by Jan. 17. Ultimately, the federal government would have to sign off on a state plan. Sponsor Ardian Zika, R-Land O’ Lakes, said the state is faced with “federal

PROPOSAL SEEKS $20 MILLION FOR CENTRAL FLORIDA WATERWAYS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF A Republican lawmaker Monday proposed a measure that would funnel $20 million a year to help protect the headwaters of several waterways in Central Florida. The state recorded 1.226 million overseas visitors in the third quarter, up from 1.115 million in the second quarter and 567,000 in the first quarter. Canadians accounted for 85,000 third-quarter visitors, up from 15,000 in the second quarter and 34,000 in the first quarter. In 2019, Florida drew 2.65 million overseas travelers in the third quarter and 10.9 million for the year. Canadians in 2019 accounted for 3.62 million tourists, of which 502,000 were in the third quarter. After a decade of year-after-year growth, Florida in 2019 totaled 131.42 million visitors. After nine months in 2019, the state had attracted 100.6 million tourists, nearly 10 percent more than in the current year. Monday’s quarterly report came as Visit Florida hopes to draw support from the Legislature to extend its termination date beyond Oct. 1, 2023. A proposal in the Senate (SB 434) would keep the agency operating until Oct. 1, 2031. A similar measure in the House (HB 489) offers an extension to Oct. 1, 2028. Visit Florida received $80 million from the Legislature for the current year, which included $50 million in state money and $30 million from federal stimulus programs.

overreach” during the pandemic and that it is in Florida’s interest to consider moving to a state worker-safety plan. The proposed Democratic amendments addressed issues such as requiring that any state plan would not conflict with emergency temporary standards or other worker-safety standards issued by OSHA. “It just makes sense. If we’re going to do it, do it right,” Rep. Joe Geller, D-Aventura, said. The amendments were rejected in voice votes. The bill came after OSHA issued a rule this month that would require tens of millions of workers nationwide to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or be regularly tested and wear masks. Florida is challenging the rule in federal court. A House analysis said 21 states and Puerto Rico operate plans that cover private and government employees. Another five states and the U.S. Virgin Islands operate plans that cover government employees, according to the analysis. But Zika said it could take two to three years for the federal government to approve a Florida plan. The Senate is considering an identical bill (SB 6-B).

Ashley Moody and Chief Financial Jimmy Patronis, certified the results of the Nov. 2 Democratic and Republican primaries in Congressional District 20 in Broward and Palm Beach counties. The 11-candidate Democratic primary required machine and manual recounts, with Cherfilus-McCormick defeating Broward County Commissioner Dale Holness by five votes, according to the state Division of Elections website. Cherfilus-McCormick will face Republican Jason Mariner in the Jan. 11 special general election in the overwhelmingly Democratic district.

lative session, which will start in January. The bill would help carry out a 2017 law known as the Heartland Headwaters Protection and Sustainability Act, which was designed to protect the headwaters of the Alafia, Hillsborough, Kissimmee, Ocklawaha, Peace and Withlacoochee Rivers in the Green Swamp and Polk County. The bill points, at least in part, to concerns about future water supplies in the region. The money would come from the state’s Land Acquisition Trust Fund, which receives revenues from a real-estate tax.
