EXPLORE VIRTUAL LEARNING by Gina Castro

Between the horrible graphics and obnoxious chat rooms, the Internet in the 90s didn’t seem promising. Flash forward to now, the Internet is what’s holding us together. And COVID-19 has only increased our need for the Internet. Frequent visits to grandma have become video chats. Networking at large conventions have become sending private online messages. Even though we are constantly adjusting and then readjusting to our world’s new normal, there is one thing that we know for certain. The Internet is here to stay. The Internet’s possibilities are endless. Since a lot of us are staying home more often, you could use this time to learn something new. We rounded up online discussions, events and classes hosted by local people. So you’ll stay sharp and connected once COVID-19 is behind us. See something we should add to the list? Send us a message on social media @ DowntownCrowd. Kukua Institute

Based out of the historic Belmont-DeVilliers District, the Kukua Institute is a place to share the cultural, intellectual and economic abilities and contributions of African Americans. The Institute is currently running two online discussions. Pared Pairings: Uncovering Conversations is a monthly series that features conversations around a single focus of art, history, science or technology. The series is hosted by Kylara Sampson, a makeup artist who comes from a family of talkers. Each month two special guests, who are experienced on the month’s subject, have a discussion with no filters, no rules and no boundaries to where it can go. Through Pared Pairings, you can learn about art and its impact on transformative change in human spoken word artist Quincy Hull and professor Mark Hopkins. You can even join in on the conversation. The next Pared Pairings is Sept. 15 at 6 pm. The other online discussion Kukua is hosting is Startups on the Blocks. This is a network platform that seeks to empower founders of color with the knowledge to turn their ideas into products

and services. Startups on the Blocks features local, state, regional, national, and global entrepreneurial ecosystems that can support entrepreneurs through mentorship, best practice training, networking, office space and funding resources. This discussion is weekly. Visit Kukua Institute on Facebook for more information. Crank Up the Confidence: Connections and Tactics for Success

The goal of this event is to empower, connect and grow businesses in the Pensacola area. The speakers include experts in banking, accounting, operations and legal assistance. The purpose of this event is to provide entrepreneurs and business leaders of all levels with the tools they need to solve common issues. the possibilities of your business while giving you the confidence to pursue them. The hosts of this event are Studer Community Institute, Warren Averett, LLC, The Spring Entrepreneur Hub and Clark Partington Attorneys at Law. Visit Studer Community Institute for more information. Social ICON

One way many businesses navigated the COVID-19 storm was by developing an online presence. Juggling several social media apps while managing a website is tough. But you’re in luck. Social ICON’s weekly Virtual Event Software Demo + Q&A was created to help you with that exact issue. Social ICON is a full-service strategic marketing agency. Wavering the world of creative branding and messaging is its bread and butter. Each week Social ICON and its Creative Director, Lindsey Castor, discuss how businesses can benefit from hosting online events. After the discussion, the virtual audience is able to ask questions. Admission is free. The next event is Sept. 10 at 10 am. Visit Social ICON on Facebook for more information. Black Business Roundtable There are endless resources available about how to do business on a national level, but the list gets smaller when you look for state and city level resources. If there is anyone who could possibly know how to run a business in Pensacola, it’s the people who currently run a business in Pensacola. The Facebook group “We Support Black Business!!” is focused on supporting Pensacola’s black business owners. Every Sunday, this page and Moni Ase host an online Black Business Roundtable. This event is an opportunity for local business owners

to learn from others, discuss common issues and network. All voices are welcome. The next event is Sept. 13 at 4 pm. Visit the “We Support Black Business!!” Facebook group for more information.

This online event hosted by Pensacola Little Theatre can be your opportunity to see your script come to life and get feedback from the audience. During this event, the virtual audience will read and act out scripts that are submitted by participants. If writing isn’t your style, you can

still participate. Scripteasers needs lively people who enjoy reading out loud and getting into character. But, of course, there is always the option to just sit back and enjoy the show. For more information, visit Pensacola Little Theatre on Facebook. Pensacola Museum of Art

Did you know looking at art can help your brain? It’s true. Viewing, analyzing and creating art stimulates the brain in substantial and long-lasting ways. Gazing at a gorgeous painting, sculpture or other artwork increases blood flow to the brain by as much as 10 percent. The Pensacola Museum of Art has several art exhibits available online, including Poppy Garcia’s Bless Your Heart. The PMA also offers ways to experience the museum from home. Through Collection Uncorked, you can learn more about PMA’s permanent collection through curated wine and art pairings. Chief Curator, Anna Wall, and Certified Specialist of Wine, Hilary Shaffer, selected wines based off of its flavor profile and origins so that the drink complemented the art, artist or subject matter. Inside this limited edition curated collection, you’ll find three wines, reproductions of the works of art along with narratives to guide you. This experience will show you PMA through another lens and expose you to some exciting new wines. This program is available each week. Each wine box is $65, and the pick up location is at Pot Roast & Pinot. Proceeds from this program will be used to help support PMA’s educational initiatives and exhibitions. The museum also offers several at-home art activities. To learn more about the PMA, visit pensacolamusuem.org.

11 DAYS OF RIDES, FOOD & FUN COMING TO THE 86TH ANNUAL PENSACOLA INTERSTATE FAIR Interstate Fair and Reithoffer Shows, Inc. officials are excited to announce that the 2020 Pensacola Interstate Fair will take place starting Thursday, Oct. 22, at 4 p.m. and run through November 1, 2020. To celebrate the opening, the Fair will be offering $1 Day admission tickets all day Thursday. “We know how important the Fair is to everyone and we’ve been working really hard to ensure we can present the Fair in a safe and responsible way,” said Don Frenkel, general manager of the Fair. “We’re thrilled to be able to make this happen, and look forward to bringing some much-needed laughter, fun and magic to the Pensacola community this fall.” As always, the midway will be filled with amusement rides, attractions and fun fair food throughout the 11-day event. This year’s Fair will spotlight the Cirque Ma’Ceo, an acrobatic and equestrian stunt show, as well as feature an all-new Kid’s Science Show, and the return of the Sea Lion Splash show. In addition, a new ride called The Beast will thrill those brave enough to try it. The Fair will still be presenting the Livestock Show and Auction on Wednesday night, but in order to comply with health directives and social distancing measures, fair organizers decided to cancel the 2020 evening concert series and close all other exhibits. “To ensure the safety of our fairgoers we decided to put an emphasis on sanitation and social distancing restrictions on our many attractions so that people can enjoy their annual trip to the fair without jeopardizing their health,” he added. All Fair employees will be masked and screened daily for signs of illness, and all high touch areas, concessions and rides will be sanitized frequently. Fairgoers should be aware that this may cause longer wait times, but enforcing these new sanitation protocols will ensure strict compliance with public health guidelines.

Reithoffer Shows Inc. — the North American traveling midway providing carnival and fair rides, games and food concessions to fairgrounds around the eastern United States — is taking these specific steps to implement social distancing and enhance public safety in a modified fair, including: • Implementing strict cleaning protocols of all rides, attractions, concessions and high-touch areas using an EPA-approved disinfectant. • Implementing daily health screenings and temperature readings for all employees. • Requiring use of masks/face coverings for all staff. • Providing hand sanitizer at all concessions stands and handwashing stations throughout the midway. • Encouraging fairgoers to frequently handwash and sanitize. • Managing capacity and the density of people within the midway to allow for appropriate social distancing. • Controlling seating positions in rides and event attractions. “This fair has been an annual tradition for 86 years in Pensacola. We know how much it means to many local area families, and we are confident that by taking these necessary steps, people will still be able to enjoy our annual event,” Frenkel said. “We ask all fairgoers to do their part by complying with the safety measures we are putting in place, and by wearing face coverings whenever possible.” This year’s Fair is scheduled to be held from Thursday, Oct. 22 to Sunday, Nov. 1, 2020 with the following reduced daily admission prices: • Thursday, Oct. 22: $1 Dollar Day admission • Friday-Sunday, Oct. 23-25: $10 adults/$5 kids • Monday-Thursday, Oct. 26-29: $8 adults/$5 kids • Friday-Saturday, Oct. 30-31: $10 adults/$5 kids • Sunday, Nov. 1: $5 admission for all

UF, FSU RANKED IN TOP 20 PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES

SETTLEMENT APPROVED ON UTILITY HURRICANE COSTS

JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE --- The University of Florida and Florida State University remained ranked among the top 20 public universities in the country Monday, as U.S. News & World Report released annual ratings that have become a closely watched scorecard for colleges. UF tied with the University of California-Santa Barbara for sixth in top public universities, after being ranked seventh last year. UF also was tied for 30th among national universities, the top ranking of Florida public or private schools. “By nearly every measure, UF is continuing to make gains, and I’m thankful to the elected leaders, faculty, staff and supporters of the university who have made that possible,” university President Kent Fuchs said in a prepared statement. “We have momentum, focus and hard work on our side, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this university.” Florida State tied for 19th among public universities with the University of Maryland, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Washington, after being ranked 18th last year. FSU was tied for 58th among national universities. Sally McRorie, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, said FSU improved in criteria such as class sizes and the graduation rate of students who receive Pell Grants, which provide financial help to lowincome families. “We continue to make investments to ensure our students have a world-class

NEWS SERIVCE OF FLORIDA STAFF With little discussion, the Florida Public Service Commission on Tuesday approved a settlement about Gulf Power’s costs of restoring power and rebuilding damaged parts of the electric system after Hurricane Michael in 2018. Gulf reached the settlement with the state Office of Public Counsel, which represents consumers, and attorneys for federal-government agencies. Gulf last year contended that it should be able to recoup $295 million from customers for its storm-related costs, but the Office of Public Counsel disputed that amount. The settlement trimmed $5 million from Gulf’s request, along with requiring the utility in the future to take steps to better track storm-related costs. Utilities have long been able to pass along storm-restoration costs to customers, but they must be able to justify the costs to the Public Service Commission. Gulf, the largest utility in Northwest Florida, faced a major restoration effort after the Category 5 Hurricane Michael slammed into the Panama City area in October 2018 and barreled north into Georgia. Among other things, Gulf needed

PRISON VISITATION TO RESUME IN OCTOBER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Putting safety measures in place to try to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Florida Department of Corrections plans to resume allowing visitors at state prisons on Oct. 2. Corrections Secretary Mark Inch announced the move in a video released Friday, though he did not detail the safety measures. “Starting Oct. 2, we will be resuming visitation at institutions where it is safe

learning experience, and reducing class sizes helps our students have engaging, active classroom experiences,” McRorie said. The University of South Florida tied for 46th among public universities, while the University of Central Florida tied for 77th and Florida International University was in a tie for No. 95. Florida A&M University, meanwhile, touted that it was the highest-ranked historically black public school in the country, coming in at an overall ranking of No. 117. “It is a statement about a joint effort between our Board (of Trustees) and the President (Larry Robinson) to establish and stick with key priorities,” Florida A&M board Chairman Kelvin Lawson said in a prepared statement. “We want to continue to push the envelope and focus on ongoing improvement in our operating model.” The top five public universities in the country, in order of ranking, were the University of California-Los Angeles, the University of California-Berkeley, the University of Michigan, the University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Among national universities, the University of Miami was tied for 49th, the second-highest ranking in the state behind UF. The University of South Florida was ranked in a tie for No. 103. The top five national universities, in order of ranking, were Princeton University, Harvard University, Columbia University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Yale University, which were tied.

and appropriate to do so,” Inch said. “Visitation will look much different than before. Numerous safety measures will be in place, and interactions with your loved ones will be modified. We understand how important in-person visitation is for maintaining family bonds but also want to minimize the risk to our incarcerated population. I am confident we can move forward safely with a careful approach.” The state stopped visitation in March. As of Friday, 15,812 inmates had tested positive for COVID-19, and 117 had died. Also, 2,836 workers in the corrections system had tested positive.

FRIED WANTS ‘CARES ACT’ MONEY FOR LUNCH PROGRAMS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried wants the state to be more open about how it plans to spend federal stimulus money received because of the coronavirus pandemic. In a letter to Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday, Fried requested a full accounting of federal “CARES Act” money the state has received so it can be discussed at a scheduled Sept. 22 Cabinet meeting. “With an extraordinarily deep and broad economic crisis in our state, it is critical that Floridians are apprised of the ways in which this taxpayer funding is being expended,” Fried wrote to DeSantis. “You recently noted that ‘those CARES ACT dollars are obligated already,’ yet there has been no public accounting of the ways in which this funding has been obligated or expended.” Fried, the only Democrat on the state Cabinet, estimat-

ed the state government has received $4.58 billion from the federal government. She noted that several states have used CARES Act dollars for school nutrition programs and would like some of the money Florida received to be “emergency relief ” to schools and programs that provided lunches over the summer. Fried said in a news release that the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services last month determined Summer Food Service Program providers in the state lost nearly $262 million serving lunches. “Schools and school districts may face up to an additional $370 million in nutrition funding losses in the first half of the 2020-21 school year due to the pandemic,” the release said. The state Cabinet has met only once since Feb. 4, with a May 28 meeting held by phone. An agenda had not been posted on the Cabinet website as of Monday afternoon.

FIRST BALLOTS SUBMITTED IN GENERAL ELECTION NEWS SERVICE OF FLOIDA STAFF The first votes from Floridians are in for the 2020 general election. The state Division of Elections on Tuesday morning posted that 42 vote-by-mail ballots had been returned, with most of them in Flagler and Monroe counties. Supervisors of elections must send requested vote-by-mail ballots to stateside and overseas military members, along with overseas citizens, no later than 45 days before an election. The first big batches of vote-by-mail ballots for the Nov. 3 election will be sent out by county supervisors between Sept. 24 and Oct. 1. Of the first ballots returned, 19 were by Democrats, 17 were by Republicans, one came from a third-party voter and five were from voters without party affiliations. As of Tuesday morning, almost 4.28 million of the state’s 13.89 million voters had requested vote-by-mail ballots, with nearly 1.99 million by Democrats and more than 1.33 million by Republicans, according

FEDERAL MONEY WILL PAY FOR FOURTH WEEK OF BENEFITS NEWS SERVICE OF FLOIDA STAFF With hundreds of thousands of Floridians remaining out of work during the coronavirus pandemic, federal money will cover a fourth week of additional unemployment benefits, according to the state Department of Economic Opportunity. Florida has been approved for an extra week of $300 payments to jobless people through the federal Lost Wages Assistance program, the department said Monday. An original application was designed to provide additional money to eligible Floridians for the weeks ending Aug. 1, Aug. 8 and Aug. 15. The approval adds

8,000 workers, including 7,000 from other utilities or contractors, to help restore the system, according to a filing at the commission. Gulf in early 2019 estimated that its Michael-related costs would total $342 million and received approval from the commission to begin recouping the money from customers in July 2019 on an interim basis. But it needed to return to the commission for final approval of actual costs. The utility in November put those costs at $295 million, which led to a monthslong process that resulted in the settlement. Among the disputed issues in the case were whether costs of some materials and supplies were storm-related or whether they were more normal operating expenses. The interim approval last year of restoration costs added $8 a month to the bills of Gulf residential customers who use 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity a month --- a common benchmark in the utility industry. The interim plan was based on the charges being in place for five years. In the November filing seeking $295 million in actual costs, Gulf proposed keeping in place the $8-a-month charge but said it would be needed for 53 months, rather than five years.

to the state Division of Elections. In 2016, when 3.47 million vote-by-mail ballots were sent out, Republicans returned 1.08 million of the ballots and Democrats returned 1.03 million, as President Donald Trump won the state by 112,911 overall votes. Supervisors sent 1.394 million vote-by-mail ballots to Democrats and 1.347 million to Republicans. Florida Republicans have been working to counter Trump’s attacks on voting by mail in other parts of the country. With some states sending absentee-ballot applications to all registered voters and expanding election laws to allow voters to cast ballots from home amid the coronavirus pandemic, Trump has decried the possibility of election fraud. Trump, however, has said Florida --- a crucial battleground state --- is an exemplar of how mail-in voting should be conducted. Florida requires voters to request mail-in ballots before elections officials can provide them. The state adopted its “no-excuse” absentee-voting system in 2002, and in 2016 switched the name from “absentee” to “vote-by-mail.” The deadline to register for the election is Oct. 5.

the week of Aug. 22. President Donald Trump issued a directive on Aug. 8 to use Federal Emergency Management Agency money for the program. Only Floridians who are eligible for at least $100 a week in state assistance and are out of work because of the pandemic are eligible for the federal funding. The short-term aid follows an assistance program providing $600 a week that expired in July. Florida, which provides up to $275 a week in state unemployment assistance for 12 weeks, had an 11.3 percent jobless rate in July, representing 1.125 million unemployed people. Since mid-March, the state has distributed nearly $15.97 billion to 1.97 million unemployment applicants, with about $12.8 billion coming from the federal government.
