E D UCATION, CONS ER VAT I O N A ND INTER ACTION AT T H E N E W A L ABA MA G ULF COAS T Z OO by Kelly Oden | photos by Guy Stevens The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo has opened the doors to their new facility in Gulf Shores and visitors are in for a real treat. The “Little Zoo that Could” is now a much bigger zoo, and it delivers a variety of animal adventures, education, interaction and fun for all ages. The previous incarnation of the zoo was housed on a 6– acre property, a portion of which was undevelopable wetlands. The old zoo was also located very close to the Gulf of Mexico, which led to its complete destruction after multiple hurricanes in 2004 and 2005. That destruction and the moving of all zoo animals to staff homes prior to the hurricanes garnered national attention and was the subject of an Animal Planet series called “The Little Zoo that Could.” After the show aired, the zoo received letters, donations and media requests from around the world, making it a popular destination for animal lovers. Although the little zoo rebuilt in its original spot, the generosity of the Weir family allowed the zoo to dream even bigger. The Weir family donated an inland 25-acre parcel and zoo administrators began planning for the zoo’s expansion. The first completely new zoo to be built in the United States in over twenty years, the new facility houses roughly 300 animals,199 subspecies and 22 endangered species. Species include primates, reptiles, birds, lemurs, wolves, tigers, lions, bears, sloths, kangaroos and their newest addition– giraffes Benjamin and Akayla. Ambassador animals include Chuckie, the famous 12-foot American alligator, who escaped during a hurricane Ivan; Simba the lion, whose roar can be heard through the zoo; Bruce Quillis, the African Crested porcupine; and Kevin Bacon a pig with an eye for art. The zoo’s mission has always focused on education and conservation. Executive director Joel M. Hamilton says that fo-

cus was front and center when planning the new facility. “The old facility being such a small one, the public was very up close and personal with both the animals and the educators. They could talk to the keepers and ask questions about the animals. That’s something we have strived for here—to make sure that we still have that same kind of interaction. It’s very important—those impromptu discussions about an animal, the storytelling and intertwining information about the environment and conservation with that. It’s that intimacy that always made our facility a very popular one. We have animal encounter programs where people can come and have an opportunity to get very close to the animals and then we have the opportunity to talk about environmental education,” Hamilton said. The new zoo has three different presentation areas as well as animal ambassador teams and education teams who do educational presentations several times a day. Officially opened in March of this year, the zoo features all the animals, attractions and small–town charm that made the previous location so well loved, but the size and layout allow for better conditions for the animals and visitors alike. For the animals, the new site allows for larger and more natural habitats and offer more amenities for play and enrichment. For visitors, the zoo’s circular design makes enjoying the many exhibits, interactions, gift shops, dining options and educational opportunities easy to navigate. In addition, a variety of buildings and outdoor spaces can accommodate group events—everything

from corporate and community events to family reunions and weddings. The Savannah Manor is a rental facility that was designed to look like a traditional European manor out on the Savannah in Africa—complete with an African market. The unique décor and rolling lawn overlooking lemur island and the lion habitat make it a perfect place to host weddings and corporate functions. A favorite of visitors, the zoo’s animal encounters continue to grow and now include time with kangaroos, sloths, reptiles, lemurs and giraffes. Animal encounter exhibits offer visitors the chance to get up-close, touch, hold, feed, and learn amazing things about these friendly animals. One thrilling new amenity is the Soaring Eagle zipline a ski lift type of zipline that pulls riders 110 feet in the air where they can enjoy sweeping views of the zoo and surrounding areas. Once at the top, the zipline releases the passenger chair and riders come zipping back down for an unforgettable ride. In addition to the zipline, visitors can enjoy an animal

themed carousel ride, safari cars and a kiddie train. The Safari Club is a standalone restaurant and dining is available both during and after zoo hours. “It’s awesome,” Hamilton said. “You can come here in the evening, sit out on the veranda and enjoy a fine dinner while listening to the lion roaring, the lemurs calling and the macaws hollering. It’s definitely a unique setting within the region.” The menu at Safari Club is far from the traditional burger and fries at many zoo eateries. Executive Chef Greg Buschmohle and his team have created an internationally inspired menu that includes small plates, handmade artisan wood fired pizzas and a variety of seafood, meat and vegetarian selections. The restaurant is also Ala-

bama’s first certified Green Restaurant—focusing on conservation, recycling and reducing waste. The energy-efficient operation does not use Styrofoam products or plastic straws and all to-go containers are bio-degradable and/or recyclable. The restaurant also features an onsite garden and composting operation. In addition to the existing attractions, Hamilton said that many new exhibits are planned as well. A walk–through aviary is currently under construction and work is moving forward on expanded animal encounter areas, a hoofstock exhibit in the Africa section and an Australia themed area. While the zoo is open to visitors, they are complying with CDC guidelines amidst the pandemic. All staff members wear masks when social distancing is not possible, the zoo path is one way to maximize social distancing amongst guests, deep cleaning is happening regularly and some animal encounters unavailable. The new Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is located at 20499 Oak Road East in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The zoo is open daily from 9 am until 4 pm and the Safari Club restaurant is open daily from 11 am until 9 pm. The all New Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo features more than 25-acres of animal focused fun and education.

ESCAMBIA COUNTY CORRECTIONS SUSPENDS ROAD CREW SERVICES FOR A SECOND TIME DUE TO COVID-19 Escambia County Corrections received a positive COVID-19 test result at the work annex, formerly known as the road prison. As a precaution, Escambia County will suspend road crew operations that provide services throughout the county for a second time. These services include, but are not limited to, grounds keeping throughout the county and support to the landfill, animal services, code enforcement and fleet maintenance. “Corrections officers and medical teams continue to monitor inmates and recognized that this male inmate had an elevated temperature,” Escambia County Corrections Chief Rich Powell said. “Corrections is working with Community Health Northwest Florida to establish rapid testing for road crew inmates for their health and welfare as well as to minimize the impact on services that are provided throughout

the county. Fortunately, medical staff advises that no inmates are presenting medical concerns at this time. We are continuing to clean more frequently to try to prevent further spread of COVID-19, and masks continue to be available for all inmates.” As of Friday, Aug. 28, 236 inmates have been tested since July at the Escambia County jail for COVID-19. There were 158 positive cases and 149 of those cases have been medically cleared and eight have been released from custody, leaving one active positive case on Friday with no medical concerns at this time and 78 negative tests. LAWMAKER AGAIN TARGETS DESANTIS SUPREME COURT PICK JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE — State Rep. Geraldine Thompson on Monday asked the Florida Supreme Court to reconsider her challenge to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ appointment of a Palm Beach County circuit judge to the Supreme Court and require DeSantis to choose another nominee for the post. The request came after justices on Thursday ruled that DeSantis overstepped his authority in May when he appointed Judge Renatha Francis to the Supreme Court though she had not met a legal requirement of being a member of The Florida Bar for 10 years. While justices agreed with Thompson that DeSantis had acted improperly, they said they couldn’t go along with her argument that DeSantis should be required to choose a different justice off a new list of nominees. Instead, justices said the proper fix would have been to require DeSantis to choose one of seven other nominees sent to him early this year. But since Thompson didn’t request that solution, the court rejected her challenge. In court documents filed Monday, Thompson’s attorneys argued for a rehearing in the case or, potentially, to be able to amend the case that the Windermere Democrat filed in July. They argued that the appointment of Francis

should be invalidated and that the solution spelled out in Thursday’s ruling — that DeSantis choose one of seven other nominees — should be required. “Representative Thompson supports adherence to the rule of law and the Florida Constitution,” Thompson’s attorneys wrote in one of the documents. “She opposes any decision which permits the Governor to unlawfully appoint a constitutionally unqualified candidate to the Florida Supreme Court.” The legal fight stems from DeSantis’ decisions in May to appoint Francis and Miami attorney John Couriel to the Supreme Court to fill vacancies created when former Justices Barbara Lagoa and Robert Luck were named to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Couriel joined the Supreme Court immediately, but DeSantis said Francis would become a justice on Sept. 24, when she would meet the 10-year Bar membership requirement. Thompson’s attorneys challenged the constitutionality of the appointment and contended that the Florida Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission should provide a revamped list of candidates to DeSantis, who would then make a different selection. But the Supreme Court, in a 15-page main opinion Thursday, said it couldn’t go along with that request. “The governor did exceed his author-

DESANTIS, TRUMP ADVISER TOUT SCHOOLS REOPENING JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE — With students returning to classrooms throughout most of the state, Gov. Ron DeSantis and an adviser to President Donald Trump on Monday tried to bolster support for offering in-person learning during the coronavirus pandemic. Scott Atlas, a physician and member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, said during a news conference with DeSantis that evidence is “incontrovertible” that children are at extremely low risk from COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus. “We can’t panic. There’s no place for fear in public policy,” said Atlas, a senior fellow at the conservative Hoover Institution at Stanford University. “The children are not at any significant risk, although there are exceptions. But the exceptions, of course, exist in every medical illness. If you are a doctor you understand that, they do not overwhelm the rest of the evidence.” Atlas and DeSantis also emphasized focusing on people who show symptoms of the virus and are particularly vulnerable to its effects, rather than people who are infected but asymptomatic. DeSantis said one of his priorities has been to “keep our society functioning.” “To put society on its knees is kind of cutting off your nose to spite your face,” DeSantis said. “The schools, I think, are an important part of that.” The news conference, held in the state Capitol, came as school districts in almost all areas of the state were required Monday to offer in-person classes. Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran last month issued an order directing schools to reopen by Aug. 31. Districts in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, which have had the largest numbers of coronavirus cases, did not have to meet the date for in-person classes. DeSantis and Corcoran have emphasized a need to give families a choice of using in-person instruction or distance learning. Corcoran estimated Monday that about 60 percent of students statewide are taking part in face-to-face instruction and about 40 percent are taking part in virtual or “hybrid” learning,

though the numbers vary by district. But while DeSantis and Corcoran have spent weeks touting the approach, it has been controversial and has drawn legal challenges from the Florida Education Associations teachers union and the Orange County teachers union. In part, the unions have argued that Corcoran’s reopening order last month violates the Florida Constitution’s guarantee of “safe” and “secure” public schools. Leon County Circuit Judge Charles Dodson last week ruled in favor of the unions and issued a temporary injunction against the order. But the 1st District Court of Appeal late Friday imposed a stay on Dodson’s ruling — effectively meaning that the order remains in effect as schools reopen. Nevertheless, Florida Education Association President Fedrick Ingram vowed to continue the legal fight. “We are going to keep fighting because lives are at stake,” Ingram said after the appeals court issued the stay. “This is not about closing schools or opening schools. This is about allowing local districts to do what is best to protect local families.” At least part of the unions’ concern has been that teachers and other staff members could be exposed to the virus, which is particularly dangerous to people with underlying health conditions. Schools shut down in March and students were shifted to distance learning as the pandemic hit the state. During Monday’s news conference, Atlas said the focus of testing and other measures should be on vulnerable people. But he also warned about the effects of locking down schools and other parts of society. He said the United States is the “only country of our peer nations in the Western world who are this hysterical about opening schools.” “You cannot shut down schools and then just assume you are doing something good because there is some infection in the school,” Atlas said. “We know that there is a significant drop in learning, but also all the socialization that children need, all of the physical activity, all the health, all of the nutrition.” — News Service Assignment Manager Tom Urban contributed to this report.

ity in making this appointment,” Justice Carlos Muniz wrote in the main opinion. “In a nutshell, when a governor fills by appointment a vacant judicial office, the appointee must be constitutionally eligible for that office at the time of the appointment. But that is not the end of the analysis, because the remedy Thompson seeks is legally unavailable under these circumstances. There is no legal justification for us to require a replacement appointment from a new list of candidates, rather than from the one that is already before the governor. And the correct remedy (an appointment from the existing list of eligible nominees) would be contrary to Thompson’s stated objectives in filing this case. Therefore, we hold Thompson to the remedy she requested and deny her petition.” The judicial nominating commission in January sent the names of nine nominees, including Francis and Couriel, to DeSantis. While DeSantis was supposed to make appointments within 60 days, he put off the decisions until May, citing the coronavirus pandemic. Francis was born in Jamaica and would be the first non-Cuban person of Caribbean heritage to serve on the Supreme Court, DeSantis said when he announced the appointments. She also would be the first Black justice since Peggy Quince retired early last year and would be the only woman on the court.

BY THE NUMBERS: CORONAVIRUS — MONDAY EVENING EDITION NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF TALLAHASSEE — State agencies updated a variety of numbers Monday, August 31 related to the coronavirus in Florida. Here are some takeaways: — 623,471: Total number of cases. — 1,885: Increase in cases from a Sunday count. — 11,187: Deaths of Florida residents. — 68: Increase in Florida resident deaths from a Sunday count. — 3,596,875: Unemployment claims processed from March 15 to Sunday. — 1,933,064: Unemployment claimants paid. — 14,610,164,274: State and federal dollars paid to claimants.

In her challenge in July, Thompson argued that the nominating commission should provide a new list of nominees to DeSantis and asked that the JNC “strongly consider including for consideration the six fully qualified AfricanAmerican candidates who applied for the vacancies in this case.” Francis was the only Black applicant on the list of nine nominees sent to DeSantis. In one of the documents filed Monday, Thompson’s attorneys appeared to acknowledge that blocking Francis would lead to the Supreme Court continuing to lack a Black justice. Thompson, who is Black, has been involved in civil-rights issues and has provided reenactments of historical Black leaders to the Legislature. “Representative Thompson has consistently indicated that she supports racial and gender diversity on the Florida Supreme Court,” one of the documents Monday said. “However, she has also consistently stated that achieving diversity should not, and is not, required to come at the expense of sacrificing the appointment of a qualified candidate to the Florida Supreme Court.” One of the documents noted that Joe Jacquot, DeSantis’ general counsel, opposes the motion for rehearing or the potential filing of an amended case.

DESANTIS SAYS FLORIDA IN ‘GOOD SHAPE’ FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Gov. Ron DeSantis expects people to be better behaved in preventing the spread of the coronavirus during the Labor Day weekend than they were on Memorial Day. Asked about the upcoming holiday weekend during an appearance Monday at UF Health at The Villages, DeSantis said people have become more active since the first phase of reopening in May while also being careful. “I think you can be very active and just do it in a way that makes sense,” DeSantis said. “I think a lot of Floridians have really gotten into a good groove. You know, we’re open. We have stuff going on, they understand that. Schools (reopening),

FEDERAL JOBLESS BENEFITS APPROVED FOR FLORIDA NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Florida’s request to tap into federal money to provide additional unemployment benefits has been approved, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said over the weekend. The Lost Wages Assistance program is intended to provide $300 a week on top of regular state unemployment benefits for people who can show they were put out of work due to the coronavirus and are eligible for at least $100 a week in state assistance. No timeline has been set for the money to reach qualified applicants. “FEMA will work with

obviously a big part of that. You know, but they’re doing the basic things, and so I think If they continue to do that, I think we should be in good shape.” During the Memorial Day weekend in late May, people were reported meeting outdoors in groups across the state, with international media attention focused on police having to disperse hundreds from an unauthorized gathering along a beachside road in Daytona Beach. As Floridians celebrated the Memorial Day weekend, the number of coronavirus cases stood at 52,255, and the virus was tied to 2,338 deaths. As of Monday, the state reported 623,471 cases and 11,187 deaths of Florida residents.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to implement a system to make this funding available to Florida residents,” the federal agency said in an online post. President Donald Trump announced the assistance after a program that provided $600 a week in federal unemployment benefits expired in July. That amount, approved in a stimulus plan in the spring, came on top of state jobless benefits. Congressional leaders and the Trump administration have been unable to reach agreement on extending or revamping the $600-a-week assistance. Florida provides up to $275 a week in state benefits that last for 12 weeks, a period that ended long ago for many people who started getting assistance early in the pandemic.
