ART, NATURE AND EXOTIC HARDWOODS COMBINE

AT MADERA CRAFT FURNISHINGS by Kelly Oden photos by Steven Gray

A

striking, 5-foot tall, hand-carved, petrified teak Buddha greets clients at the recently opened Madera Craft Furnishings in Old East Hill. The statue sets the tone for the stunning pieces on display in the unique space. The narrow brick building that is the Madera showroom was built in 1922 as Pensacola’s first bicycle shop. Now, the open, bright and clean space houses an eclectic mix of luxury furniture and décor from the other side of the world—Southeast Asia to be precise.

Josh and Aimet Oberhausen opened Madera in June of this year. The couple met in Miami where Josh worked in communications and Aimet worked in public relations. The couple, who also own and operate Oberhausen Marketing and Public Relations, moved back to Josh’s hometown of Pensacola as an antidote to the hustle and bustle of Miami. Madera was born out of the couple’s shared passion for art, nature, design and

the built environment. After working on design concepts for a high-end Thai restaurant in Miami, the couple fell in love with the materials, craftsmanship and style of Balinese imports. Luckily, they had a friend in Asia whose family was in the furniture business—a connection that continues to serve them well in their latest endeavor. “We really love with warm, natural feel and the metal elements,” Josh said. “It

really has a coastal element, as well, and we thought it would be a great fit for this area. We had already purchased this space and were using it as a shortterm rental, but last year we decided to go ahead and bring this collection here. The area is growing like crazy and I think this product is so distinctive. We are really trying to support the interior designers, architects and homeowners.”

Josh and Aimet Oberhausen, owners of Madera Craft Furnishings

combines nature and fine art. Standing at 8-feet high and 5 and a half feet wide, it’s sure to be conversation piece in any environment. Another showstopper is the 9-foot-3 live edge slab tabletop that

The area is growing like crazy and I think this product is so distinctive. We are really trying to support the interior designers, architects and homeowners.” The collection at Madera is visually impressive and historically interesting. Madera’s pieces are made of exotic wood including reclaimed teak, suar, mango, tamarind and rattan materials. The showroom offers a selection of dining and coffee tables, chairs, consoles, buffet cabinets and essential furniture for indoor or outdoor areas. A highlight of the collection is the Jakar teak root statue. Made from the excavated root system of an ancient, petrified teak tree, the sculptural piece has a majestic quality that

can be used as a dining, conference or even a restaurant table. The table top rests on a set of brass colored legs, but other legs can be custom ordered as well. The rail tie console table also has an interesting history. Josh explained that the Dutch built the rail system in Southeast Asia. The Dutch didn’t use creosote or other chemicals on their wooden ties as they did in America. Thus, these ancient, solid beams make exceptional furniture components. Madera also carries a large dining table created with a mosaic-like selection of rail ties.

WE’RE SOCIAL!

Some of the pieces combine vintage elements with modern design and functionality. A set of handcarved antique shutters from India are used as doors on a mango wood armoire creating a lovely blend of old and new. Many of Madera’s pieces are multifunctional as well. The long, petrified wood benches can also serve as gorgeous coffee tables, and the petrified stumps can be utilized as side tables, for casual seating, or even as shower stools because the petrified nature of the wood makes it nearly impossible to ruin. The couple hopes the collection will appeal to everyone—from designoriented homeowners and interior designers to commercial restaurant, hotel and corporate designers. ESCAMBIA COUNTY AWARDED $6.4M FROM DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE TO CONSTRUCT THE PENSACOLA BAY LIVING SHORELINE PROJECT AND ENHANCE RESILIENCE OF NAS PENSACOLA On Sept. 23, the U.S. Department of Defense Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation announced the award of $6.4 million to Escambia County to partially fund the construction of the Pensacola Bay Living Shoreline Project. This was one of only 13 projects awarded in the national Defense Community Infrastructure Program funding opportunity. The DoD award will fund construction of a large-scale living shoreline at Sherman Inlet, located offshore of Naval Air Station Pensacola, by creating a series of emergent and submerged breakwaters across 5,300 linear feet of shoreline. Once complete, the living shoreline will greatly enhance the coastal resilience of NAS Pensacola. The shoreline at Sherman Inlet has experienced significant erosion due to frequent storm events and wave energy generated through Pensacola Pass, creating an enhanced risk to installation infrastructure and mission readiness. “The recent approval of the Defense

Community Infrastructure Program grant is another great example of the community partnership between NAS Pensacola and Escambia County,” said Captain Tim Kinsella, Commanding Officer, Naval Air Station Pensacola. “The Living Shoreline Project will provide lasting contributions to the health of the Pensacola Bay and is significant to the coastal resiliency of NAS Pensacola.” This award builds on two additional grants received earlier this year to fund construction of the project. The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) awarded $2.5 million from the National Coastal Resilience Fund to support construction of the Sherman Inlet living shoreline in addition to a $9 million NFWF Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund award to fully construct a living shoreline and restoration at White Island. “Escambia County is incredibly grateful to the Department of Defense Office of Local Community Cooperation for investing in this green infrastructure project to strengthen the resilience of

CITY PARTICIPATING IN UF/IFAS EXTENSION PEANUT BUTTER CHALLENGE The Peanut Butter Challenge, UF/IFAS Extension’s annual jar collection for local food pantries that launched in the Florida Panhandle in 2012, is again spreading statewide this year. Coordinated by UF/ IFAS Extension faculty, staff and volunteers, the competition among counties – for bragging rights only – was conceived as a way to feed hungry families ahead of the holidays in addition to promoting a Florida-grown crop. Unopened jars of peanut butter can be donated to the Escambia County Extension office, located at 3740 Stefani Road, Cantonment, FL 32533 from Oct. 1 through Nov. 24. Follow along on social media as well at https://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/ escambia/. “We are always impressed and touched by the communities’ grassroots support for this program,” said Libbie Johnson, agricultural agent for UF/IFAS Extension Escambia County and co-organizer of the Challenge since its inception. “The peanut industry is a great contributor to our state, but this event also shows how the nutritious food it produces can help our fellow community members who may be struggling.” Other Escambia County collection sites include: • Escambia County Public Safety, 6575 North “W” St., Pensacola, FL 32505 • Escambia County Farm Bureau, 153 Highway 97, Molino, FL 32577 • Holy Spirit Catholic,10650 Gulf Beach Highway, Pensacola, FL 32507 • Gilmore Services, 31 E. Peanut butter is an ever-popular item in food pantries for its nutrient density and shelf stability. The project took on new meaning last year as demand for food bank assistance had increased as an economic effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. The latest numbers from the United States Department of Agriculture shows food insecurity affected roughly one in 10 Floridians in 2020. In addition to the community donations, the Florida Peanut Producers Association and Florida Peanut Federation have partnered with the project for years. These organizations are based in the northwest and northeast peanutproducing regions of the state and will again contribute to the totals distributed to food pantries in those regions. In the 2020 Peanut Butter Challenge, the first year the event was conducted statewide, participating UF/IFAS Extension county offices received over 27,000 total pounds of peanut butter. To join or partner with Escambia County’s collection this year, call the UF/IFAS Escambia County Extension office at 850-475-5230. NAS Pensacola while improving aquatic habitat surrounding the installation,” said Matt Posner, Escambia County RESTORE Program Manager. “NAS Pensacola has been a great partner and we look forward to working with them through construction to ensure they can implement their mission well into the future.” About the Pensacola Bay Living Shoreline Project

The Pensacola Bay Living Shoreline Project is a large scale living shoreline to be constructed in southwestern Pensacola Bay. Project goals include the creation of approximately 20,000 linear feet of emergent and submerged reef breakwaters and 200 acres of emergent marsh and submerged aquatic vegetation habitat. The project includes three distinct segments: Site A – White Island, Site B – Magazine Point at NAS Pensacola and Site C – Sherman Inlet at NAS Pensacola. Project design has been funded by the Florida Department of Environmental

Protection via the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council from RESTORE Act Pot 2 funding, and by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity through a Defense Infrastructure Grant. The Project will not only create and restore aquatic habitat, it will also enhance the coastal resilience of the surrounding community and NAS Pensacola. Living shorelines enhance coastal resilience and address erosion by providing long-term protection, reducing wave energy and restoring vegetated shoreline habitats through strategic placement of plants, rock and reefs. Living shorelines also stabilize sediment, improve water quality and enhance habitats for oysters, fish, shrimp, crabs, birds, sea turtles and other estuarine species. Follow the Escambia County Natural Resources Facebook page for project highlights, program updates and more. DOCTOR FIGHTS STATE AFTER MARIJUANA STING OPERATION DARA KAM NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE --- A physician who orders medical marijuana for patients is accusing state health officials of breaking the law to create fake records in a sting operation involving an investigator falsely posing as a military veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder. Joseph Dorn, who has practiced in Florida for nearly three decades, risks losing his medical license after the Department of Health filed a complaint alleging the Tallahassee-based physician violated medical-marijuana laws when ordering cannabis for “Patient O.G. ” and “Patient B.D.,” two undercover investigators with the state agency. “Patient O.G.,” identified in administrative court records as investigator Ben Lanier, visited the doctor in 2018 seeking authorization as a medical-marijuana patient. According to a complaint filed in 2019, Lanier provided a “handwritten medical record” showing he had been diagnosed with PTSD by the military. Records in the administrative complaint also show that Lanier told Dorn he had anxiety after serving in Afghanistan, where the doctor’s son served. Lanier also showed Dorn a driver’s license with his fake name. But Dorn’s lawyers argue that the health department investigators lacked law-enforcement powers and that state health officials broke federal law by forging military documents. Agency officials also broke state law by having the undercover agent pretend to have a medical condition that would have qualified him as a legitimate medical-marijuana patient, Dorn lawyer Ryan Andrews contends. “The fact that they are so brazen to just make up and lie about employees serving in the military, it’s just even more

distasteful given that the governor served overseas for the country as well. … It’s just another layer of shame,” Andrews said, adding health officials preyed on Dr. Dorn, “whose son is in the military. It’s disrespectful to the governor, who served overseas and put his life at risk, too.” Gov. Ron DeSantis, whose administration includes the state health department, is a U.S. Navy veteran whose service included stints in Guantánamo and Iraq. Andrews also accuses current and former Department of Health employees --- including Courtney Coppola, a former director of the state Office of Medical Marijuana Use who now serves as a deputy chief of staff for DeSantis --of having “participated in a conspiracy to defraud” Dorn by forging and falsifying federal documents. Andrews is threatening to file lawsuits against Coppola and other people involved in the investigation, including Chris Ferguson, the health department’s former chief of investigative services who has replaced Coppola as the state’s marijuana czar. The health-department complaint against Dorn accused the physician of violating state laws in a number of ways, such as by failing to conduct physical examinations of the undercover agents. The complaint also alleged Dorn failed to conduct full assessments of their medical histories; failed to properly diagnose the men with at least one qualifying medical condition; failed to adequately determine that the patients’ medical use of marijuana would likely outweigh the potential health risks; and failed to review their controlled-drug prescription histories in a statewide database. Health officials also accused Dorn of making “deceptive, untrue, or fraudulent representations in or related to the practice of medicine” by including false representations in the men’s patient

COURT CLEARS SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES IN PULSE MASSACRE JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE --- A federal appeals court Monday rejected a lawsuit alleging that Twitter, Google and Facebook should be held liable in the 2016 massacre at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub after Islamic State social-media posts radicalized shooter Omar Mateen. A three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a district judge’s decision to dismiss the lawsuit, which was filed by victims and estates of victims in the shooting that killed 49 people and wounded dozens of others at the LGBT club. The ruling focused heavily on whether the plaintiffs had proven that Twitter, Google-owned YouTube and Facebook “aided and abetted” Mateen in violation of a federal law known as the Anti-Terrorism Act. The court’s 31-page ruling said the plaintiffs did not show that the attack was an act of international terrorism as defined under the law. “We are deeply saddened by the deaths and injuries caused by Mr. Mateen’s rampage, but we agree with the district court that the plaintiffs failed to make out a plausible claim that the Pulse massacre was an act of ‘international terrorism’ as that term is defined in the ATA (Anti-Terrorism Act),” Judge Adalberto Jordan wrote in the ruling joined by Judges Andrew Brasher and Julie Carnes. “And without such an act of ‘international terrorism,’ the social media companies --- no matter what we may think of their alleged conduct --cannot be liable for aiding and abetting under the ATA.” The Atlanta-based court said Mateen was radicalized through the Islamic militant group’s use of Twitter, Facebook and YouTube and that the group, commonly known as ISIS, claimed credit for the massacre. But it pointed to part of the definition of international terrorism as

activities that “occur primarily outside the territorial jurisdiction of the United States, or transcend national boundaries.” “Mr. Mateen was self-radicalized on the internet while living in Florida and came to identify with ISIS,” Jordan wrote. “He then used firearms to commit mass murder and mayhem in that same state. His deadly acts of domestic terrorism --- and the means by which he accomplished them --- do not plausibly transcend national boundaries.” Also, the ruling said ISIS did not commit, plan or authorize the attack. “ISIS claimed credit after-the-fact, and there is nothing in the complaint to suggest that ISIS was aware of Mr. Mateen or knew beforehand about his planned attack at Pulse,” the ruling said. “Although the complaint alleges that ‘ISIS reaches potential recruits by maintaining accounts on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube so that individuals across the globe may reach out to (it) directly,’ the plaintiffs never once claim that Mr. Mateen was in contact with ISIS prior to the shooting, or that ISIS was involved in committing, planning or authorizing the attack, or that ISIS knew about the attack beforehand.” The appeals court also turned down allegations against the social-media companies under Florida law for negligent infliction of emotional distress and wrongful death. Mateen entered Pulse in the early morning of June 12, 2016, armed with a semi-automatic rifle and a semi-automatic pistol and committed what was at the time the deadliest mass shooting by a single person in U.S. history. Before being killed by police, he barricaded himself in a bathroom, called 911 and declared allegiance to ISIS, according to the ruling. The Pulse massacre became the second-deadliest mass shooting by a single person in 2017, when a gunman killed 60 people in Las Vegas.

records “to purportedly justify entering a physician certification” for medical marijuana. During a hearing in Dorn’s case, Department of Health chief legal counsel Kristen Summers acknowledged that Lanier’s records weren’t genuine. “We know that the document was fake. It was not a real medical record. That is the point we were trying to prove. Can we bring in insufficient evidence and wave a piece of paper around and say, ‘Dr. Dorn, can we have medical marijuana?’ and whether Dr. Dorn would accept that fraudulent piece of paper that was not real or not based on a real patient and give that person medical marijuana or not,” Summers told Administrative Law Judge W. David Watkins on Sept. 16. But Andrews pressed Summers to specify “if there is a rule or a statute” that allows the health department to forge documents for investigations. “It’s our responsibility to ensure public safety,” she told Watkins. “We have pretty wide statutory guidance to be able to conduct investigations the way we see fit. There aren’t a lot of delineations, other than the fact that we’re allowed to investigate. That’s what the Legislature said, we shall be able to investigate.” Florida law makes it a misdemeanor if a person “fraudulently represents that he or she has a qualifying medical condition to a qualified physician for the purpose of being issued a physician certification” for medical marijuana. Physicians also commit a misdemeanor if they authorize medical-marijuana use for a patient “without a reasonable belief that the patient is suffering from a qualifying medical condition.” Coppola, as the head of the Office of Medical Marijuana Use, and Department of Health General Counsel Louise St. Laurent were directly involved in the Dorn investigation. The women visited

DESANTIS TARGETS FACEBOOK OVER ‘WHITELISTING’ NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday directed Secretary of State Laurel Lee to conduct an investigation into alleged election interference by Facebook after a Wall Street Journal report about the socialmedia company. The Journal reported Sept. 13 that Facebook created special content-moderation rules for highprofile people --- a practice known as “whitelisting.” In a letter Monday to Lee, DeSantis cited the Journal report and said Facebook could have used the practice to “put its thumb on the scale” in political races. He directed Lee to investigate to “determine whether any violations of Florida’s election

FEATHERS FLY OVER STATE BIRD NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Sen. Jeff Brandes wants a new state bird. The St. Petersburg Republican filed a proposal (SCR 324) for the 2022 legislative session that would rescind the designation of the mockingbird as the state bird, a perch it has held since 1927. In tweets Thursday and Friday defending his proposal, Brandes said the state should have a bird that people identify as being from Florida. “I should mention that the mockingbird is also the state bird of 4 other states,” Brandes tweeted on Friday. “The mockingbird apparently had a very good lobbyist.” On the Department of State website, the mockingbird, or Mimus polyglottos, is described as

Dorn’s office, and Coppola took photographs, according to testimony in the case. Dorn was targeted, in part, because he previously worked as medical director for Surterra, one of the state’s medical-marijuana operators. State law bans doctors who are employed by medical-marijuana operators from ordering cannabis treatments for patients. Summers said Dorn “terminated his relationship” with Surterra shortly before the doctor opened Medical Marijuana Treatment Clinics of Florida. The issue is not part of the complaint, she said. Health officials also accused Dorn of “abusing his authorization as a qualifying physician” by ordering medical marijuana for too many patients over a one-year period. Between February 2017 and January 2018, Dorn issued medicalmarijuana orders for 3,292 new patients, the complaint said. But Andrews maintains that another doctor ordered marijuana for more than 14,000 patients during the same period but was not the subject of a complaint. Watkins is slated to hold a final hearing on the complaint against Dorn next month. Andrews told The News Service of Florida that the state agency’s use of phony records and undercover agents who faked medical conditions could have a chilling effect on other medical-marijuana doctors. “The DOH’s unlawful actions in this investigation will have the effect of changing the way physicians order medical marijuana for patients, because now the Department of Health has put in a play that anybody who comes into your office could be coming in with federal medical records that we told our staff to forge. So now they have to be on guard,” he said.

DeSantis pushed a law through the Legislature this spring that, in part, sought to prevent large social-media platforms from banning political candidates from their sites and required companies to publish --- and apply consistently --- standards about issues such as banning users or blocking their content. DeSantis, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, pushed the social-media crackdown after Twitter and Facebook blocked Trump from their platforms after his supporters rampaged at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Onlineindustry groups challenged the constitutionality of the law, and a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction against it June 30. The state has taken the case to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Brandes’ proposal does not suggest a replacement bird. Florida has a range of state symbols, including a stone, Agatized Coral; a beverage, orange juice; an animal, the Florida panther; a marine mammal, the manatee; and a reptile, the American alligator.
