iving along the white sand beaches of the Gulf Coast and the longleaf pinecovered bayous and rivers that feed into the Pensacola Bay system, it’s easy to submerge yourself in nature and forget the everyday stressors of human life. If you talk to a nature enthusiast or environmentalist, however, they will tell you that human life is causing major stress on the local waterways and ecosystem—particularly through trash and plastic pollution. According to The Ocean Conservancy, each year 8 million metric tons of plastics enter our ocean, and at this rate, by 2050 ocean plastic will outweigh all of the ocean’s fish. Two local groups, Keep Pensacola Beautiful and the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program, are working to educate and change public perception of trash as well as garnering action from local communities to clean up the waterways. A recent study published in Science Advances revealed that of the 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic that has been produced since the 1950s, only a mere 9 percent of it has been recycled, leaving it to accumulate in landfills or pollute waterways. Keep Pensacola Beautiful has been a leading figure in the local effort to reduce litter and pollution. Their annual fundraiser, Pieces Adrift, emerged to not only financially support the mission of Keep Pensacola Beautiful but also to educate the public on the dangers that pollution has on the local waterways and environment. The Pieces Adrift art show and silent auction will be held on September 18 at the Studer Community Institute from 6 pm to 9 pm. “The art show does a great job at creating a visual representation of pollution and

making people aware of how little changes can make a big impact,” Sigrid Solgard, Keep Pensacola Beautiful executive director, said. “If you’re using a bottle of water once a day for years, you’re only seeing them one at a time. But when you see the accumulation of thousands of bottle caps in one art piece, it changes your perception. It can also teach people how you can reuse something instead of throwing it straight in the trash.” All of the artwork featured at the Pieces Adrift exhibit are upcycled and use at least 50 percent of the materials from trash, litter and secondhand sources. Artists can source their own materials or visit the trash shop at Keep Pensacola Beautiful, where they can find unique items collected from local cleanups and other everyday items from around the

office. From murals and sculptures to self-portraits and even a repurposed TV fish tank, the art at Pieces Adrift is evocative and often relates directly to the theme of environmentalism. “One piece from our first art show that sticks with me is this picture of sunflowers on a piece of plywood. The center of the flowers is made out of cigarette butts, and it says ‘in lieu of flowers’ on it with letters made out of aluminum cans. One thing that most people don’t know is that cigarette butts are the most littered item in the United States. We live in a watershed, so all of the trash on the side of the road works its way into the rivers and bayous, then out into the bay and ocean,” Megan Washington, Keep Pensacola Beautiful development coordinator, explained. While Pieces Adrift works to educate the public and showcase the impact of litter on waterways, the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary program recently launched its Trash Free Waters Project aimed at reducing and preventing waterborne trash in three major creeks within the Pensacola Bay system: Jones Creek, Carpenter Creek and Pond Creek. The project received funding from the Environmental Protection Agency and officially kicked off on July 31 at the Jones Creek cleanup. Emerson Cheney, the Trash Free Waters project volunteer coordinator, explained that the project will not only intercept trash before it enters the Gulf of Mexico but also work to identify and monitor sources of trash. “The project has a three-part approach. First, is the initial cleanup to remove as much trash as possible to create a baseline,” Cheney said. “At the Jones Creek cleanup, we had 47 volunteers collect around 500 pounds of trash out of
the creek. Next, we install a litter boom, which floats on the surface of the water and is suspended from each side of the creek to trap floating litter. It sits on the surface and doesn’t go all the way down to the bottom of the creek, so wildlife can move freely, and paddle boards and kayaks can actually go over the top of it. Last, we will use the EPA’s Escape Trash Assessment protocol, which helps us identify where the trash is coming from and work with local businesses or organizations on a solution.”
I’m excited because we aren’t just cleaning up the trash, but we’re creating solutions for the future.” As Cheney explained, this is the first time a litter boom system has been utilized in Escambia County, and it will help them quantify the amount of trash actually entering the waterways. Waterborne trash is a growing problem, but until now, there hasn’t been recent data collected on the impact of trash in local waterways. The project calls for a litter boom at each creek system. Litter booms have been installed at both Jones Creek and Carpenter Creek and will be monitored for one year, utilizing

volunteers and community members to remove, sort and evaluate the collected trash. The final litter boom will be installed in Pond Creek in October. “One of the major impacts of waterborne trash is wildlife ingestion,” Cheney explained. “These plastics float on the top of the water and are eaten by fish and turtles. In turn, this plastic sits in their stomach and gives them a false sense of being full, so they starve to death. The toxins from plastic ingestion can also magnify as it moves up the food chain, as bigger fish eat a lot of smaller f ish full of microplastics, eventually making its way to human consumption. This trash poses a huge threat to the entire ecosystem. I’m excited because we aren’t just cleaning up the trash, but we’re creating solutions for the future.” Both Keep Pensacola Beautiful and the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program are working to educate the public and create change to protect the local environment for future generations to come. As most plastic-based trash takes upwards of 400 years to decompose, it’s vital to keep this debris out of the water and the Gulf Coast ecosystem. To get involved or learn more about the Trash Free Waters Project, visit ppbep.org. To purchase tickets to Pieces Adrift, visit keeppensacolabeautiful.org. Tickets cost $45 for adults and include a sampling of hors d’oeuvres, one complimentary beverage and entrance to the art show.

GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS ANNOUNCES A NEW MONOCLONAL ANTIBODY SITE IN PENSACOLA Governor Ron DeSantis was joined by Floridians who have received monoclonal antibody treatments, and announced that Florida will open a new monoclonal antibody treatment site in Escambia County at Bayview Community Center. The Escambia County site is located at:
Bayview Community Center 2001 East Lloyd Street Pensacola, Florida 32503 Hours: 7 days a week, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Hear directly from monoclonal antibody recipients about their experience with the therapy… Melody Hinson, a resident of Pace, said, “After I tested positive, I immediately got in touch with my doctor. Within two hours, I had an appointment
to receive the monoclonal antibodies for the next day. I hadn’t heard a whole lot about it, but I went and got the infusion. When I got home that afternoon, my taste came back. The achiness, and all of that went away. We’ve been blessed by all this effort. There’s people here that don’t have insurance, and with the state sites and standing referral, they are going to be able to get this help.” Yvette McLellan, who works for the City of Pensacola, said, “When I started feeling sick it felt like a head cold, and I was just coughing. I didn’t want to infect my coworkers, so I stayed home Monday and when I went and got tested, I was positive for COVID. My husband was positive by Friday, and he was a lot sicker than I was. We had the antibody infusion and were better that afternoon. I encour-
BLUE ANGELS HOMECOMING AIR SHOW MOVES TO PENSACOLA BEACH Due to COVID-19 restrictions onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola and other naval installations across the Southeast, the 2021 Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show will be moved to Pensacola Beach. The show dates will remain Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5 and 6. This year’s air show will be the 75th anniversary of the formation of the U.S Navy Flight Demonstration Team, also known as the Blue Angels. The Blue Angels are the oldest continuously operating demonstration flight team in the world. “This is a huge disappointment to us. Holding the Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show at NAS Pensacola is a long, proud, Pensacola tradition that is especially meaningful in this 75th anniversary year,” said Capt. Tim Kinsella, commanding officer of the base. “But, as I’ve said many times before, the links between this community and the military are incredibly strong. This airshow is important to the community, and I think in these times we probably need it more than ever.” “I reached out to community leaders to see what was possible, and they immediately jumped in with both feet to assist, because they know how important this is to Pensacola,” said Kinsella. “This is Pensacola’s airshow. The Pensacola can-do spirit just makes me so proud to be a part of this community.” Officials and representatives with Escambia County, the Santa Rosa Island Authority, Visit Pensacola, and air show sponsor Kia Autosport have been working together tirelessly to get the Homecoming Air Show on Pensacola Beach organized in a very short time. To fund the Homecoming Air Show on Pensacola Beach, Visit Pensacola plans to use excess TDT money from the area’s banner summer tourism season to pay for the event, combined with a major sponsorship donation from Kia Autosport. “We couldn’t let the Blue Angels end their 75th anniversary season with a canceled hometown show,” said Darien Schaefer, President and CEO of Visit
Pensacola. “Visit Pensacola, with the sponsorship support of Kia, is very proud to bring the Blue Angels home on Pensacola Beach this November.” In the same fashion as the July air show, the SRIA will host the 2021 Homecoming Air Show along Pensacola Beach on Friday, Nov. 5 and Saturday, Nov. 6, with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels headlining. In addition to the Blue Angels, there will be a handful of aerobatic and stunt plane pilots performing as well. However, specific pilots, details and times are still being planned and confirmed. “The SRIA jumped at the chance to be able to welcome home the Blues at the end of their 75th season on Pensacola Beach,” said Leigh Davis, Executive Director of the SRIA. “This is a win-win for the community and we look forward to hosting everyone on our beautiful beach come November.” 2021 Pensacola Beach Homecoming Air Show Schedule (weather permitting):
• Wednesday, Nov. 3: Breakfast with the Blues for circles and arrivals • Thursday, Nov. 4: Arrival Day and Dress Rehearsal • Friday, Nov. 5: Homecoming Air Show Day 1 • Saturday, Nov. 6: Homecoming Air Show Day 2 Please note: showtimes are tentative and subject to change as the details are still being arranged. There will be no Sunday rain date if Saturday’s air show is delayed or canceled due to weather. More details about the Homecoming Air Show on Pensacola Beach will be announced as they become available. For media inquiries, please contact:

age everyone to go and get this antibody infusion as soon as you start feeling anything. The sooner you get it done, the faster you can start feeling better and that’ll keep us all out of the hospital. And thank you so much for pushing this. I encourage you all to get the treatment.” Angela Moore, a resident of Pensacola Beach, said, “I contracted COVID on a Saturday evening. By Tuesday I couldn’t stand, and I had a fever of 99 to almost 103. Three days later I was able to get the monoclonal infusion. I went in there with a fever, and I came out after the treatment and I didn’t have any more symptoms.” Sean Kramer, a retired Navy aviator who lives in Pensacola, said, “Two weeks ago I came down with symptoms after being vaccinated back in February. My symptoms were classic, loss of taste and smell. I contacted one of my doctors that I knew at the VA, and he said he was unaware of the monoclonal antibodies treatment. I sent him a link with infor-

mation, and he suggested I go get it. Two days later, I tested negative, and got back to work. That was my goal, to not expose anybody else, and to get back to work.” James Madarena, a local paramedic, said, “When I tested positive, I called a medical director that we work with, to ask him what I should do next. He told me to start driving towards Fort Walton, so that’s what I did. While I was in route, my wife scheduled an appointment online and once I got there I was in and out within an hour and a half. I tested negative four days later, with nothing more than a stuffy nose. I’m very thankful to have this treatment for those at risk and severe COVID patients. Our community is very thankful for you taking care of them, it is a true blessing.” To find locations to receive monoclonal antibody treatments around the entire state, please visit floridahealthcovid19. gov.
PENSACOLA MUSEUM OF HISTORY HONORS THE FALLEN, THE HEROES & THE WITNESSES IN 9/11 EXHIBIT BY CLAIRE STEWART 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City, Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon in 2001. To mark this space in time and reflect on the seminal events that shaped our nation for years to come, the University of West Florida (UWF) Historic Trust opened 9/11 Remembered on the second floor of the Pensacola Museum of History in downtown Pensacola. The exhibit contains items from first responders used at Ground Zero, as well as two artifacts recovered from the wreckage site, on loan from the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City. A section of i-beam from the World Trade Center towers is also on display courtesy of the History Museum of Mobile. When entering the space, visitors can view footage and interviews from that tragic day projected on a wall of the exhibit. The footage includes an interview with Naval Air Station Pensacola personnel who were involved in the recovery efforts. The 9/11 Remembered exhibit also includes an interactive space for visitors to share their own personal stories. “We really wanted people to have an area to reflect on the events of that day and how things have changed since then,” Curator of Exhibits at the UWF Historic Trust, Jessie Cragg said. “We created a place for people to fill out a card with their 9/11 story. When the exhibit comes down, we’ll preserve these stories in an archive for future display or research opportunities.” Cards are filled with memories of where people were when they first heard the news or their thoughts about how the
world has shifted since that day. Reading through the cards, visitors will see a range of experiences, ages and feelings evoked in the 9/11 stories: “I was stationed in Korea and it was night time when I saw the event on TV. My first thought was that I had fallen asleep and woken up during a movie. My whole world crumbled.” “I was 16, sitting in my science class. We sat in stunned silence watching everything unfold. I consoled my friend whose family member worked in one of the towers. I couldn’t really absorb what was happening.” Once cards are filled out, they are installed in the gallery as part of two floating columns, reminiscent of the Twin Towers. The exhibit can be a somber one for most visitors to take in. The UWF Historic Trust wanted the exhibit to be a space of reflection, especially for first responders who identify closely with the events of September 11, 2001. “First responders are the heroes of the 9/11 story and they play such a large role in the Northwest Florida community,” Visitor Experience Manager at the UWF Historic Trust, Wendi Davis said. “We thought that offering free admission to the 9/11 exhibit for the individuals who save lives day in and day out is the very least we can do.” The Pensacola Museum of History will also be participating in the 9/11 Memorial Museum’s Tribute in Light on September 11, 2021, by lighting the exterior of the building blue. The 9/11 Remembered exhibit will be on display through January 2022 on the second floor of the Pensacola Museum of History. To purchase tickets or learn more, visit historicpensacola.org.
ESCAMBIA COUNTY VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS TO RECEIVE $1,000 STIPEND On Thursday, Sept. 2, the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved for volunteer firefighters to receive a $1,000 stipend. The stipend is for volunteer firefighters who ran at least 25% of their station’s call volume and conducted 96 hours of training during the COVID-19 pandemic under the same timeframe as Governor Ron DeSantis’s Florida’s Heroes Initiative, previously approved by the Florida Legislature and distributed to 193,000 first responders by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. “The individuals who volunteer their
time to serve our community should be recognized,” said Public Safety Director Eric Gilmore. “As a volunteer firefighter myself, I understand what goes into the hard work they do. Receiving this stipend is a big win for our volunteers.” Funding for the checks is part of the American Rescue Plan. Visit myescambia.com/american-rescue-plan to learn more about the American Rescue Plan. Escambia County thanks State Rep. Michelle Salzman for working with the Board of County Commissioners to approve the stipend.

HOSPITALS HAVE SEEN JUMP IN CHILDREN WITH COVID-19 C H R I S T I N E S E X TO N SERVICE OF FLORIDA
NEWS
TALLAHASSEE — As Florida schools opened their doors to students — some maskless — the number of children hospitalized with COVID-19 has increased more than tenfold. At a news conference Thursday with U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., University of South Florida College of Public Health professor Jason Salemi said an average of six children were hospitalized each day with COVID-19 in early June. But during the last week of August, that increased to an average of 66 children. “The likelihood of a child being hospitalized with COVID-19 is far lower than an adult being hospitalized with COVID19,” Salemi said. “But we are continuing to see a rise in hospitalizations for pediatric populations.” Christina Canody, a BayCare health system pediatrician who took part in the news conference, said 180 COVID-19 pediatric patients were hospitalized at BayCare’s 13 hospitals in August, the “highest by far” and triple the previous high count. In addition to increasing hospitalizations, Canody said the health system has seen an uptick in the number of emergency room visits among pediatric patients. “One of the things I want to stress is although we have seen a tremendous increase in pediatric admission to the hospital in general, kids still have a less complicated course and death rates remain low,” Canody said, noting that most of the BayCare patients had been treated at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital
in Tampa. “That being said, the pediatric population in the hospital still makes up 1.5 to 2 percent of those patients and because the adult numbers are so high right now, we see that in the pediatric population.” Canody blamed the increase in pediatric hospitalizations, in part, on the reopening of schools when the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus was sweeping across the state. “We see as we open the school year, it was truly what I call the perfect storm. Last year when we opened, we had mandatory mask requirements. We had some of the lowest rates of infectivity, positivity and prevalence that we had seen during the pandemic,” Canody said. “But this year, we were at (the) absolute opposite ends of the spectrum. We were at very high prevalence and positivity rates, and we continue to see a large number of children impacted.” Gov. Ron DeSantis has downplayed the spread of COVID-19 in children. At a news conference last month in South Florida, the governor said the spread of the respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, among children is “much more of a concern than the COVID.” DeSantis has pushed back against a connection between school attendance and a rise in hospitalizations. On July 30, DeSantis issued an executive order that sought to block school districts from requiring students to wear masks without allowing parents to opt out of the requirements. He cited a new state law known as the “Parents’ Bill of Rights,” which addresses parents’ ability to control decisions about their children’s
education and health care. But 13 school districts have approved mask mandates, with exceptions only for children who have doctors’ notes. In a lawsuit filed by parents, Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper ruled that DeSantis overstepped his authority with the executive order. DeSantis contends that the ruling will be overturned on appeal. Christina Pushaw, a DeSantis spokeswoman, said Thursday in a statement to The News Service of Florida that overall hospitalizations due to COVID-19 have declined by nearly 10 percent in the past week. She said children account for 1.4 percent of the patients, which, she said, was “in line with previous variants of COVID-19, suggesting that delta is not necessarily more dangerous to children than past variants.” Pushaw said the governor’s office was “glad to see that pediatric hospitalizations also are declining.” DeSantis’ response to the summer surge in COVID-19 cases has resulted in a torrent of criticism from Democrats such as Castor, who represents the Tampa area. Castor called on the governor to adhere to public-health guidelines issued by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including wearing masks and maintaining social distancing. “This is a critical time where it’s an allhands-on-deck moment for all of us to listen to our public health professionals and our pediatricians. I don’t think it’s that hard,” Castor said. “I think the state of Florida really deserves better leadership “ An Aug. 26 report issued by the Ameri-
can Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association said Florida had totaled 311,102 COVID-19 cases in children from infants to age 14 since the pandemic began. That was a 9 percent increase from a 284,280 total in an Aug. 19 report. Salemi and Canody said the increasing number of pediatric patients in Florida is a reason for concern. “I understand that kids do well with this and most recover, but still we do have a lot of children who will be admitted to the hospitals. And when you are going from a handful a week or a handful a day to having several hundred within a whole month that’s a lot of patients that are going through this experience. Missed school days, recovery time, high economic hardship to the family, there’s so many aspects to it,” Canody said. “So we get that children still make up a small proportion of this, but I think you can’t measure it based on their illness. You have to base it on the complete costs to the family and those around them,” As the delta variant has caused a surge of cases during the past two months, Salemi said hospitals saw record hospitalizations among all age groups. “If you have to be hospitalized for something, it’s very serious. So if you see a record number of hospitalizations, we are going to see a record number of mortalities,” Salemi said. “So, again, whether you talk proportionally about what percentage does the pediatric population make up. That’s not what’s important to me. It’s if we can prevent children from being hospitalized, why not take every opportunity to do that.”

With committee meetings starting this month in advance of the 2022 legislative session, the Florida Senate is not planning to limit public access as the state continues battling the COVID19 pandemic. Senate President Wilton Simpson, R-Trilby, sent a memo Friday to senators acknowledging questions about COVID-19 protocols. “At this point, I anticipate the Senate will remain open to visitors during our interim committee weeks,” the memo said. “As always, senators and staff can decide whether or not to schedule in-person meetings in their individual offices. In consultation with our infectious disease consultants at Tampa General (Hospital), I will continue to monitor the evolving status of the pandemic and will not hesitate to implement enhanced protocols if necessary.” During the 2021 session, the Senate took a series of steps, includ-
DISNEY LICENSE PLATE GETS GOAHEAD NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF A new specialty license plate is ready for Florida roads ahead of plans by Walt Disney World Resort to celebrate its 50th anniversary. With 10,436 plates presold, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles announced Friday that a new Walt Disney World tag has been delivered to tax collectors’ offices and license plate agencies. The theme park is planning to mark 50 years in Florida starting Oct. 1. Revenue from sales of the tag to motorists will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central and Northern Florida. It is the third tag approved under 2020 state law that established new sales and design requirements for specialty plates. Plates honoring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels

Lawmakers will return to Tallahassee during the week of Sept. 20 for the first round of committee meetings leading up to the 2022 session, which will start in January. The state during the past two months has been battered by a surge in cases, hospitalizations and deaths because of the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus. Senate Appropriations Chairwoman Kelli Stargel, a Lakeland Republican who is one of Simpson’s top lieutenants, pointed Friday to a need to adjust to the continuing pandemic. “If it’s something that is going to be with us, we can’t just all go in our homes, shut the door, not have business, not work and not be able to conduct ourselves in a way with the community,” Stargel said. “So, we are going to work with it the best we can this year.”
Backers of a proposed constitutional amendment aimed at ensuring money for affordable housing continue adding petition signatures as they try to get on the November 2022 ballot. The Florida Division of Elections as of late Friday afternoon had received 62,552 valid petition signatures for the initiative spearheaded by the political committee Floridians for Housing. If the proposal gets on the ballot and is approved by 60 percent of voters, it would establish in the Florida Constitution the State Housing Trust Fund and the Local Government Housing Trust Fund. It would require that the trust funds receive at least 25 percent of the revenue from

flight team and the Coastal Conservation Association Florida’s “Conserve Florida’s Fisheries” effort also have topped a pre-sale requirement of 3,000 tags. Plates must also go through presale design and production steps, which the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles previously said had held up the Disney plate. The 2020 law set a cap of 150 specialty plates, up from 123 on the road at the time. But it also increased from 1,000 to 3,000 the number of plates that need to be pre-sold. Plates, most carrying $25 user fees, will have to maintain the 3,000-plate sales threshold starting July 1, 2022, or face being discontinued if they are below the new benchmark for 12 consecutive months. On Thursday, Rep. Alex Rizo, R-Hialeah, filed a bill (HB 67) for the 2022 session that would add Inter Miami CF, Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami of Major League Soccer, to the list of potential specialty tags.

Florida reported 17,506 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, according to data posted by the federal Department of Health and Human Services. The data showed that, in total, 45,909 Florida residents have died of COVID-19 since the pandemic began last year. The state Department of Health’s weekly COVID19 report published Friday indicated that 433 Florida residents died of COVID-19 between Aug. 27 and Sept. 2. However, the overall number of COVID-19-related deaths increased by 2,345 from

documentary-stamp taxes — which are collected on real-estate transactions — and would detail how the money could be used to address affordable housing. Realtor groups have poured millions of dollars into the initiative, which comes after years of frustration in the realestate industry and among other groups about decisions by lawmakers to use money from a state affordable-housing trust fund, known as the Sadowski trust fund, for other purposes. To get the measure on the ballot, the committee will need to submit 891,589 valid petition signatures by a Feb. 1 deadline. As a preliminary step, the committee needs to submit 222,898 signatures to trigger a crucial Florida Supreme Court review of the proposed ballot wording.
a state health department report issued on Aug. 27. Hospitals reported Friday that 29.7 percent of the patients hospitalized in Florida have COVID-19, a drop from 34 percent of patients reported last week, according to data posted on the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website. Fifty-one hospitals reported having a critical staffing shortage on Friday, and 53 hospitals said they expected a critical shortage by the end of the week. Hospitals also reported that 14,577 beds are being used by patients with COVID-19. The CDC website also showed that 107 children with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 were admitted into Florida hospitals Thursday and Friday.

The committee in the coming months will play a key role in the once-adecade process of redrawing legislative and congressional districts.
