Crab Cake Cook-off By Josh Newby The Arc Gateway Crab Cake Cook-off is one of Pensacola’s most iconic and wellattended fund-raisers of the year, and it’s right around the corner. Guests are given the chance to sample world-class crab cakes, sip wine and beer while surveying the silent auction, purchase local art made by Arc Gateway’s very own clients, and even participate in a raffle for a Yeti cooler. The event, which has been a successful local fundraiser for more than a decade now, is returning with those sumptuous, fluffy, quarter-sized treats on July 22 at Seville Quarter, which hosts and sponsors the fun. Tickets for the event, which starts at 6 pm, are just $60 per person for all the crab cakes and socializing you could hope for in one night. Started in the 1950s, Arc Gateway is a non-profit organization that serves children who have or are at risk of developmental disabilities, as well as adults with developmental disabilities. They began the crab cake fundraiser as a way to increase awareness of their services to the community. What began as an annual get-together attended by about 50 people has grown to become a quickly and consistently sold-out event of 300 individuals. “The event is always a lot of fun,” said Grier Halstead, development and fundraising manger for Arc. “We have a lot of things new this year, including beer provided by Lewis Bear Company, a raffle, different sponsorship levels, and even a celebrity chef.” That’s right, a contestant from TV show Hell’s Kitchen will be there, along with 20 other local chefs, making about 300 crab cakes each and competing for the top people’s and judges’ prizes. The event is always a good time for the community and a huge benefit to Arc’s clients. Last year, Arc Gateway helped more than 900 individuals in the community with developmental disabilities after raising more than $25,000 at the cook-off. Beyond the food and drink is a great opportunity to score some truly unique art made by Arc’s clients. The artists receive 50 percent of the art sale, and the other 50 percent goes back into funding the program. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event goes to Arc Gateway programs. Shakespeare – Hamlet By Emily Echevarria

The works of William Shakespeare loom large over the literature world, but for many people any study of the Elizabethan classics ends after high school English or drama class. Luckily for culture hungry audiences, local theatre group the Southeastern Teen Shakespeare Company (SETSCO) offers a way to bone up on the Bard while being heartily entertained. This month, the troupe will be performing Shakespeare’s greatest work of drama, Hamlet, at the Pensacola Little Theatre July 24, 25, 26 and 31, and Aug. 1 and 2. SETSCO is a group that allows teens to audition to be involved in a conservatory program that includes workshops, performing events and one full-scale play each season. Michelle Hancock has been the director of the group for the last seven years. “Everybody in the company is a teen, 13 to 19 and throughout the year we play at renaissance fairs and festivals,” she says. “The kids do acting workshops and Shakespeare workshops so that they’re learning about theatre and acting and the craft, and they’re also constantly in the rehearsal process to go out to do these performances.” Many know Hamlet mostly as the work of Shakespeare with the guy and the skull, which it is, and that scene contains Hamlet’s famous “To be or not to be” meditation on life and death. The skull is present because the scene takes place in a graveyard where Hamlet is watching gravediggers digging fresh graves in an old cemetery, which Hancock says was totally normal in Shakespeare’s time. The macabre nature of story doesn’t end there though. In Hamlet, betrayal, scheming and most of all murder take center stage in a tale of ongoing existential woe. It may all sound like heavy material for teens, but Hancock says the players in SETSCO are up for the challenge. ”There’s a lot of contemplation about life and death and dreams and what life means,” Hancock says. “He’s got the ‘to be or not to be’ monologue which is about ‘should I commit suicide or not commit suicide because I can’t kill my uncle so should I kill myself instead.’” Hancock says she chose the heady tragedy because it’s known as the greatest drama of Shakespeare’s repertoire and the teens that perform it are definitely up to challenge. All the players and technical crew behind the scenes are fully prepared to deal professionally with both the material and the challenges that can sometimes arise mid-production. They prepare by doing table reads where they discuss characters, motives and the words they speak. “I make sure that every actor knows exactly what they’re saying every time they speak and I think that makes a huge difference,” Hancock says. “I’m really about digging into the text and finding the meaning and conveying the meaning and making the people more than a caricature.” Tickets are $15 general admission and all shows start at 7:30 pm.
