GREETINGS TO OUR MEMBERS AND CUSTOMERS, I hope you are making the most of your spring and summer. The weather is really nice, even though it’s getting very hot and muggy. As most of you, who read my notes know, I love the water and participating in water activities. This season, I am making the effort to enjoy the beautiful bays and Gulf our area has to offer. Have you seen our Store community garden? Wow, has it grown since being planted by the Girl Scouts on Earth Day! It has been so beautiful-looking for the past few months. The squash has really produced and we have seen cucumbers, tomatoes, corn, okra, and lots of herbs. The squash plants are starting to look a little bad, but it’s from people going into the beds looking for a few pieces to take home. This year has been a test garden. We have let anyone pick veggies as they ripen. In the years to come, we plan to use this space as a true teaching garden. Thanks to Brandon (staff member) for all his hard work in our garden. He should be very proud of the results. On June 6th, we held our Annual Spring Membership Meeting and Social. We estimated that more than 300 people attended this year. The Ever’man Board was able to report really good financial news and announce the possibility of another location in our future. I was pleased to report not only a strong financial outlook, but good results from several financial audits. We were audited by the State of Florida for Sales Tax and Tangible Tax. We scored very well on both. The Ever’man Board recently commissioned a full financial audit for the year ending March 31st, 2015. This audit is currently underway. I am very pleased with my staff’s performance after reviewing the results so far. I want to thank Joy and Jennifer (staff members) on a job well done. You will notice the cover picture and story inside this THA, and note that we are starting a new benefit for shopping at the co-op. We will now donate 5 cents for every eco-friendly bag you use; bring in your re-usable bags and we will donate 5 cents to one of three charities. We will choose three charities every two months. You will also be able to donate more to those charities during your transaction. So, bring your bags and help to support a more sustainable community, as well as, your choice of a charity aligning with our Ends Statement & vision. In closing, we will be holding a few membership drives in the coming months. If you’re not a member of our co-op, we would love to welcome you. Make sure to remind your family and friends that co-op membership helps to build a brighter future for our community. Hope to see you in the store soon,
EVER’MAN ENDS STATEMENT

If you are unable to attend meetings, consider sharing your feedback via email at: board@everman.org.
We are now one year out from the opening of our remodeled and expanded store and things just get better and better. We hope that you are pleased with the additional square footage, the incredible cafe, the expanded produce section, the beautiful signage, the fabulous Educational Center, the Meat & Seafood Department and a host of other “new” additions. All this “good stuff” does not mean that we are satisfied or walking away from our duties to improve the store even more. The Board of Directors and staff members want to improve the awareness of our community to the importance of an organic, natural, sustainable lifestyle. We know that our task is still a gigantic one as members of our community, across all socioeconomic levels, are still not eating wellness promoting , clean healthy organic NON-GMO food. We can and want to make a difference. As always, you as members are more than welcome to give us your thoughts and recommendations toward making a change in our community and utilizing Ever’man as a catalyst for change. We continue to have daily classes in the Educational Center and are exploring
a host of other methods to get the word out. As a board, we consider the education of our community one of our highest priorities. We are also aware of competition from conventional grocery stores and the potential for other natural food stores to enter the market. We want to stay ahead of the curve by providing the best products, at the best price, with the best service and by focusing on long term planning to make Ever’man the place to shop for years and years to come.

Fire up the grill and grill favorites such as hot dogs and grass-fed burgers. Try something different like our house made sausages or fish fillets. For a perfect summer make sure to repeat until September.
STEVE COCHRAN PRODUCE MANAGER If you plan on trips to the beach or boating this summer, be sure to pick up soft fruit from the produce department. We have a great variety including ready to eat fresh cut fruit, peaches, plums, nectarines, and grapes. To compliment a picnic, be sure to pick up our fresh cut slaw mix and whole seeded or seedless watermelons. If you are attending a dinner or a party, remember to pick up one of our fresh cut flower bouquets.

LOCAL HIGHLIGHT
EVER’MAN PRODUCE DEPARTMENT | PENSACOLA, FLORIDA
Since our inception in 1973, we have supported local farmers and sustainable farming. We receive local, seasonal and organic fruits and veggies daily so come to the Store and check-out our delicious selections!
FIND THE FRESHEST ORGANIC PRODUCE EVERY DAY!
Freshest local variety; look for our LOCAL section next to the recipe rack.
EVER’MAN EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT STEVE COCHRAN, PRODUCE MANAGER
CAN YOU SHARE WITH US WHAT PREPARED YOU TO BE THE EVER’MAN PRODUCE MANAGER? Produce has always been my passion. Growing up in the South, I spent a lot of time with my grandparents who took me to the local Farmers Markets every weekend. They taught me young to pick seasonal fresh vegetables for the preparation of meals that week. This inspired me to learn as much as I could about produce later on in life. Out of the 32 years I worked at Winn Dixie, the majority of the time was spent working in the Produce Department. By the time I joined Ever’man I had gained the experience that is needed to meet the expectation of our members and our customers who value having the freshest organic produce in town!
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR INTERESTS AND HOW YOU SPEND YOUR FREE TIME. My life outside of work is all about family. I spend the majority of my time with family sharing in activities, specifically those activities that involve my two kids. As much as possible, I spend every waking moment with my two young kids; whether it’s helping with homework, playing games, doing outside activities, taking trips to the beach, the park or going on shopping excursions.

SUN SAFETY
TIPS AND FACTS TO KEEP YOUR SKIN HEALTHY
Sun worshipers, unite! But safely, please! While the summer sun rays feel inviting and warm, please remember that those sunbeams can do some serious (irreversible) skin damage. To keep your skin healthy, follow these best practices:
• Wear sunscreen all day, every day (summer or not!). Look for a sunscreen that is protectant against both UVA and UVB rays and is 30 SPF or more. Apply generously at least 15 minutes prior to your ventures outdoor and reapply every two hours. And don’t forget your lips, ears, tops of feet, neck, and scalp! •Wear wide-brimmed hats, and try to cover your extremities as much as possible (without inducing heat exhaustion). • Be sure to wear sunglasses that protect your eyes against the harmful UV rays (the sunglasses normally are labeled as such if they do). • Remember that the sun is highest (and most damaging) in the sky from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., so try not to be out there too long during those hours. • Check your skin regularly and notify your dermatologist if you notice any changes in shape, color, and texture of skin spots. • Sun damage starts at a very young age so be sure you are protecting your children from the potential harm. • Remember that your pets may also need sun protection. Another great summer sun safety tip is to enjoy shaded areas. Each year in the United States, nearly 5 million people are treated for skin cancer (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). Remember that skin damage is irreversible, but also preventable. 15 THE HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE • JULY | AUGUST 2015
HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Summer brings us warmth, fun, and seasonal bliss. But don’t forget that along with this season comes Hurricane Season; Hurricane Season lasts from June 1, 2015-November 30, 2015. Although this season is forecasted with fewer named storms than historical averages, being prepared is always recommended ( NOAA’s Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook.) The number one rule of preparedness is to be prepared! Creating a “Hurricane Survival Kit” can mean the difference between safety and disaster. The recommendation for supplies in your kit is to have enough previsions for three days (72 hours) per person. Store the kit in a normally dry, cool, and easily accessible location, you will want to be able to grab it safely in a hurricane emergency.
Suggested Kit Contents:
• 1 gallon of water per person, per day (elderly, children, and pregnant/nursing mothers need more). aYou may also want to stock up on more water for sanitation purposes. • Non- perishable food items (dried fruit, peanut butter, ready-to-eat canned meals, high energy foods like G Granola bars and trail mix, food or infants, fresh bread, and all amenities needed to consume foods). • Baby needs (diapers, wipes, formula, blankets, medicines, favorite toy, bottles) • Sanitation products (toilet paper, towelettes, soap, liquid hand sanitizer) • First aid kit (bandages, alcohol wipes, non-latex gloves, cold packs, tweezers) • Prescription drugs and non-prescription drugs (aspirin, Benadryl, peroxide) • Clothing (sweaters, undergarments, blankets, sunglasses, hats, gloves, rain gear, towels) • Batteries, flashlights, wind-up clock, paper/pencil, map of area, cash (enough for at least one week) and multi-use items such as safety pins and duct tape. • Make sure to have and go over with family members your evacuation route plan. SUMMER FOOD PREPARATION FOR FAMILIES WITH KIDS Oh, Baby!
By Jennifer Gorman, Educational Coordinator Freshly picked summer fruits and veggies make great tasting baby food your newborn is sure to enjoy. Homemade baby food has been on the up and up in the holistic wellness world. This latest craze isn’t just plain crazy; it is widely promoted by health and wellness professionals and has incredible benefits for your baby and your bank account.
Homemade Baby Food for Beginners
1. Pick some veggies and fruits your baby has already enjoyed. Some of the best options are: beets, broccoli, carrots, corn, green beans, leafy greens, potatoes, pumpkins, squash, apples, blueberries, cherries, and pears. 2. Wash, wash, wash! Wash any utensils, countertops, kitchen equipment, your hands, and finally, wash any fruit/veggie you are about to cook. 3. Cut your fruit/veggie of choice and remove pit, seeds, and/or core. 4. Most nutritionists suggest steaming your product as it will retain the most nutrients. If this isn’t an option you can microwave it or boil it until it is nearly tender. 5. Next you will want to place your fruit/veggie into a food processor or blender and start to gradually reduce it to a puree. If the texture and consistency is not where you want it try to add a thinner (water, yogurt, or breastmilk). 6. Storing your food is hugely important for safety and cost saving techniques. You will want to place the puree in the fridge until it is cool, and then scoop into ice cube trays. Place the ice cube trays into the freezer until the puree is frozen. Once the trays are completely solid, empty them into a freezer-safe bag and label with the date it was made and an expiration date. Both veggie and fruit purees last up to six months in the freezer, however, purees containing milk only last about two months. Please consult with your pediatrician before making dietary changes, and make sure to introduce only one new food per week in case you need to pinpoint a potential allergy.
HOMEMADE SORBET By: Ryoko Onishi, Demo Coordinator
This kid friendly food making kitchen project makes for an enjoyable time with your kids. This quick and easy drink does not utilize an ice-cream machine or blender! You just need marshmallows and fruits along with a plastic re-sealable bag to mash the ingredients. For this sorbet we used watermelon, lemonade and marshmallows. Ingredients 8 marshmallows (we recommend Dandies Air-puffed Marshmallows classic vanilla flavor = 10oz $4.79, non-GMO, glutenfree, gelatin free) 1 pound of your choice of fruit (we used organic seedless watermelon. For juice, such as the lemonade, substitute with 2 cups) Directions Pour 1/2 cup of water in a pan, bring to a boil, and insert marshmallows into the pan till marshmallows are melted. This mixture will turn into a clear liquid. Pour hot mixture into a container (be careful, it is hot!) Cool it down for a bit, and while still warm, add cut fruit (or lemonade) and mix. You can mash watermelon with fingers in a plastic bag, just gently massage the mixture. Make sure the top of the bag is tightly closed so that contents do not come out!) Put in a container to cool down. Then place in freezer for 1-2 hours. Make sure to eat before it gets completely hard (if it gets hard, you can use mixer to make the

Ever’man to Offer More Choices for Community Donations At Ever’man we live our mission to support our local community and we are proud to be first to roll out an Eco-Friendly Charity Bag Program. For each eco-friendly bag used, Ever’man will donate five cents to a charity of the shopper’s choice. Charity choices will fall into three categories: a 501c3 organization that is committed to providing healthy food, another that supports sustainable environmental practices and one that ensures the well-being of our pets and wildlife. From July 1st through August 31st, Ever’man is happy to announce that the Eco-Friendly Charity Bag Program donation options are Pensacola’s St. Joseph’s Soup Kitchen, the Pensacola Humane Society, and the Sierra Club Foundation. St. Joseph’s Soup Kitchen is a locally-run downtown soup kitchen that prepares and serves organic food for the homeless, the Pensacola Humane Society that cares for companion animals through advocacy, adoption, education and sanctuary and the Sierra Club Foundation, a public charity, committed to preserving our environment.
