International Walking Festival
May 5th - May 7th 2012
Saturday May 5th Ballyhoura Marathon Challenge - A (Walk /Jog/ Run) 7.30am Registration at Kilfinane Education Centre. 8.30am Start from Kilfinane Village. Challenging marked 26.2mile route traversing forest track, open mountain and riverbanks through the scenic Ballyhoura landscape. Return to Kilfinane Education Centre for showers & dinner. Brand new route this year. Duration: 6hours + Half Marathon - A 9.30am Registration at Kilfinane Education Centre. 10.30am Start from Kilfinane Village. Start from Kilfinane, this 13 mile walk takes in Glenroe, Darragh hills, a river bank walk to Kilflynn church, return to Kilfinane via Magner’s Wood for some well earned refreshments. Duration: 5hours + B - Walk 9.30am Registration at Kilfinane Education Centre. 10.30 am Start from Kilfinane Village. Start from Kilfinane, follow the renowned Ballyhoura Way onto Slievereagh and return to Kilfinane through the magical Killeen wood for refreshments. Duration: 4hours approx. Animal Sanctuary Dog Walk - C This is an opportunity to walk your dog or indeed come & walk one of our canine friends (or let them walk you!) at the animal sanctuary outside Kilfinane. The walk will take place in the field of dreams and forest walks. Refreshments will be served afterwards at the sanctuary. Doneraile Heritage Walk - C Explore the history of Doneraile Park through a guided tour. Learn of the Georgian Doneraile Court, home to St. Ledger family until 1969. Follow the trail along the portico gate lodge, the hunting bridge, 300 old trees and a herd of Irish deer and enjoy views of the park. Start Time: 2.00pm Duration: 2.5 hours Registration: Doneraile Park entrance gates.
Kilfinane Town Historical and Heritage Walk - C A Tour of the Town starting from Ballyhoura Centre, Main Street. Suitable for buggy and family walk. Start Time: 4pm Duration: 1.5 hours Registration: Ballyhoura Centre, Kilfinane

Cush Earthworks Archaeology Walk - C A walk overlooking the fertile plains of East Limerick where you can learn about the Iron Age agricultural community dating from about 1,000BC to 400AD and visit our newly opened Interpretive Centre Start Time: 2.30pm Duration: 2.5 hours Registration: Ballinvreena Community Hall
‘B’ Walk 10.00am Registration Ardpatrick Community Hall 10.30am Start Ardpatrick village From the picturesque village of Ardpatrick take bus transfer to the Lacca car park for start of walk. Taking in Seefin Mountain (the highest point on the Ballyhouras), Blackrock & return to Ardpatrick for refreshments via Toor Boreen. Duration: 4 hours approx.
Labbamologga Townland Walk - C Family orientated scenic walk exploring the community around Labbamologga through the local field names, history, heritage and lovely scenery. Start Time: 2pm Duration: 2.5 hours Registration: T.O. Car Park Kilbehenny Heritage Walk - C Family orientated archaeology and heritage walk exploring Galty Castle Wood near Kilbehenny. Start Time: 2pm Duration: 2 hours Registration: Galty Castle Wood Kilmallock Walled Town Walk - C Explore the medieval walled town of Kilmallock, learn of ecclesiastical origins starting in the 6th Century, a monastery having been founded here by St. Malach, visit the ruins of Kilmallock Abbey, a 13th Century Dominican building, the Blossom Gate from the 16th Century & surrounding town walls. Start time: 2pm Duration: 2.5 hours Registration: Kilmallock Church Lough Gur Archaeology Walk - C Visit Grange stone circle and continue to discover all about the Earls of Desmond, the plantation of Munster and the vaults, the graves of Teampall Nua. Learn of burial practices and local customs at the Megalithic Tomb before finally hearing of the legend Geroid Larla and the siege of Lough Gur Castle in 1641 at the lake front. Universal Access Walk - C 12.00am Registration at Doneraile Park 12.30pm Start Doneraile Park This walk is designed for persons with impaired mobility, wheelchair users & the visually impaired. Enjoy the delights of nature within Doneraile Wildlife Park assisted by members of the Ballyhoura Bears Walking Club. If assistance is required pre-booking is essential, contact Eugene Stephens, Walks Facilitator, 087 2804637. This walk is free & refreshments after in Doneraile Park.
Ballyhoura Bears Mountain Navigation Challenge 8.00am Registration Ardpatrick Community Hall 9.00am Start Ardpatrick village The Ballyhoura Bears Mountain Challenge is for walkers with an interest in navigation and mountain skills. Enter as an individual or team of 2 at beginner or advanced level. New Plan and follow a route across the Ballyhouras Event completing mountain skills tasks along the way. All walks today take place in the Galty Mountain Range. Please note a strenuous level of fitness is required for the High Level ‘A’ Walk. Participants and gear will be subject to vetting, in the interests of safety by facilitators. The following walks will assemble for registration and departure from Lisvarrinane. ‘A’ Strenuous The 7 Peaks Challenge
8.30am Registration in Lisvarrinane Village (Moroneys Bar). 9.15am Start. Bus to Clydagh Bridge to start of walk. This is a most challenging walk taking in Far Breaga Greenane, Galtybeag, Galty Mor, Slievecushnabinnia, Carrignabionna and Lyracappall. Refreshments & entertainment after walk in Moroneys pub. Duration: 7 hours+ ‘A’ Level Moderate 9.30am Registration in Lisvarrinane Village, (Moroneys Bar). 10.00am Start, Bus to Cush Carpark for start of walk. This walk takes in Cush Peak the spectacular Corrie Lakes on the northern slopes of the Galtys and return by the ice road to Lisvarrinane for refreshments. Duration: 5 hours +

‘B’ Walk 10.00am Registration in Lisvarrinane Village, (Moroneys Bar). 10.30am Start from Village. Departing Lisvarrinane village, we make our way through Ballinacourty, past Aherlow House Hotel & the holiday homes to Christ The King statue taking in the nature trail & return to village for refreshments. This walk is suitable for families. Duration: 4 hours approx ‘A’ Walk FAMILY DAY TO GALTYMORE 9.30am Registration at Community Centre Kilbehenny 10.00am Car Pool Transfer to start. Walk the Black Road to Galtymore, the highest inland mountain in Ireland taking in the Airmens monument & return to start. This is the gentlest of the routes to Galtymore but the achievement is very satisfying. Led walk. Refreshments afterwards. Duration: 6 hours +
