ANNOUNCEMENTS
From the Community Council
We had a large turnout at our meeting this month to see our Chairman hand a cheque to Dr Salamonski made up of the money donated from residents towards his retirement. We all wished him well for the future and he said he had enjoyed working in the village and would miss all his patients. We would like to express our thanks to Bob Dronsfield who came along and took a photo of the event – it should be in the weekend papers. The rest of the business is as follows. It seems that quite a few residents in the village have had letters from the Council regarding hedges that require to be trimmed away from the footpaths. Since it was not anything we had reported, the only explanation given was that someone from Fife Council has gone round the village making a note of all hedges needing attention then sending out letters to those householders. Concern has been expressed at the state of the roof of the listed building at Balmullo Farm. This has been reported to Building Standards and Safety Officers to investigate. As you will see from our front page we won a Silver Award in the Beautiful Fife Competition. This is the first time Balmullo has made an entry into this competition so we were delighted with our result. Some petty thief has removed the hydrangea from the tub at the corner of Clay Road. This has been reported to the police. Councillor Taylor stated the council were reviewing the grit bins. If anyone thinks they require one near their address please contact Cllr Taylor. One has been asked for at Burnside Hall to help with the clearing of the car park. It has been reported that someone had put a carpet in the paper bin at the recycling area and two plasma TV boxes were left full of polystyrene. There has also been garden rubbish dumped at the recycling area. If anyone is found abusing this area they will be reported and fined. As Christmas is approaching we are hoping to resurrect Carol singing this Christmas but in a different format. Rather than go around the village we thought it might be better to have everyone come to Burnside Hall and we will sit and sing together. The Church Choir will also come along and perhaps sing one or two specials and everyone else can join in the “old faithfuls”. For those who wish to come and join in there will be some Christmas Pies and refreshments, children will also be welcome, but everyone must be prepared to join in the singing. It would be helpful (for numbers) if you could either pop a note in the box at the post office or let one of the committee know that you will be there. The date will be Sunday 19th, time will be decided next month. Balmullo Community Council, has formed a sub-group, this group has young people representatives meeting with Vice Convener, John Docherty, whose idea of having young people involved directly with the council, it originally was. It’s aim is to truly reflect the views, ideas and wishes of the young people of the village because the young people of today, are the future residents of Balmullo tomorrow. The group, who hold their first official meeting in November, will have a terms of reference, in which to operate from. In attendance will be three young people, also John Docherty, Zoe Sanders Chair of Balmullo Community Council, Maggie Taylor, local Fife Councillor and it is hoped there will be a representative of Fife’s Council Youth Outreach. The group will provide input into the monthly community council meetings and have articles in the newsletter. Our next meeting is 8th November at 7.30pm in the school.

EDITORIAL
Ina Cameron
I have had a few complaints from villagers who would have liked to help with the Day of Action at the school. Unfortunately we did not know about this earlier and since we stop for July and August there was no way we could let everyone know. Perhaps some notices for the notice boards would have helped. URGENT! - Mr & Mrs Leather who delivered the newsletter to all at the Mount have intimated that they will be leaving the village sometime in the future. We now need someone to take over this area. If you can help please phone or email me as soon as possible. I also need someone to take over Straiton Terrace and Lucklaw Road as Mrs McKie is unable to continue these deliveries. Perhaps some of the younger generation would like to help out each month. If you have two people on each of the areas and they take a side of the road each it will be done in a very short time. The Mount has 50 houses and the other two areas are 30 in total. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Don and Catherine for delivering to The Mount over quite a number of years and to wish them every happiness in there move up North. Also to thank Jane McKie for helping out with the other two streets. My phone number and email address is on page 2 – Ina Cameron. Articles for the next newsletter to reach me by 8th November.
MULTI PATH UPDATE
Irene McNair
Balmullo Community Council consultation on the proposed multi path from the village to Leuchars finished in June with a stall at the Gala. The feedback/survey forms have been analysed and the main results are as follows: Number of forms completed: 611 Results by location: Balmullo: Leuchars: Guardbridge: Other:
321 170 20 100
Question 1 Number of people using this route (C25): 574 Not using the route: 37 Question 2 Would a separate cycle/footpath benefit local people: Yes: 607 No: 4 Question 4 Do you support the Balmullo Community Council in this project: Yes: 606 No: 5
Thank you to all who took time to complete our form. Support for this project is strong. The next step is a written agreement with the two landowners on the proposed route. There are two options for the route on the land owned by Pusk Farm and one option identified on the Milton Farm land. Fife Council will lead in this area. To date, a meeting has been held with Mr Black from Milton Farm and discussions are on going. It is hope that a meeting will take place in October with Mr Cheape of Pusk Farm. The funding process cannot commence until a written agreement is reached on the land required. We will continue to update you via the newsletter and Community Council meetings.

BALMULLO GALA COMMITTEE
Sheila Simpson
A big thank you to everyone who came to the Gala AGM – some much needed new blood has been added to the Committee to bring some fresh ideas to the table. However we were very sad to lose our valued Committee Members Fergy and Marie Ferguson, Andrew Smith and Dougie Lorimer, who all did a great job and will be sorely missed. The Gala will now go ahead on 11th June 2011 despite our reservations that it would not happen – thanks everyone who stepped up to help.
BALMULLO BURNS CLUB
Mary Smith
June Music Evening, entertainment by Bruce Davies singer, songwriter was a great success: also two young musicians from Markinch contributed much to the evening with their enthusiastic playing on accordion and fiddle, encouraged by Bruce and appreciated by members. September Music Evening with David Jack on accordion and friends on fiddle, flute and penny whistle played a fine selection of tunes; also a singer whose songs had us all joining in. We also had the pleasure of Burns’ enthusiasts from Cupar Burns Club. Bob Stewart, who has been elected as Junior Vice President of the Burns World Federation and George Letham who very kindly performed recitations. Both gentlemen have for many years worked tirelessly promoting local and national School Competitions. Both evenings enjoyed by all – St Andrew’s Night Dance is on Friday 26th November 2010 7.30 for 8pm. Music in the capable hands of Johnnie Duncan.
THE FOOD CLUB
Mike Withers
I am really surprised by the lack of interest shown so far in our idea of a Food Club. Come on Balmullo. It would be brilliant to benefit from a super fresh, cheap fruit and veg supply. It doesn't matter if you are a single person or a big family, the idea is for us all to club together and benefit from enhanced buying power. Register your interest now at food@balmullo.net or call me on 078 8865 6065.
UNICEF
Sue Smith
UNICEF is an organisation created by the United Nations Association in 1946 to promote the health and well-being of children. It relies totally on donations from national governments and individuals. UNICEF recently launched a new campaign called 'Put it Right'. They are trying to raise money for their worldwide work to ensure that every child has its basic rights met. These are a right to: an education, health and clean water, be treated fairly and the right to a childhood. This year there have been many additional demands on UNICEF including; floods in Pakistan, an earthquake in Haiti, famine in parts of Africa and several conflicts where children are the innocent victims. They also maintain their on-going work all over the world, including Britain. I have the current UNICEF Christmas catalogue and can order cards in a bulk order giving free postage. There are cards to suit all tastes and pockets. You can also order calendars, wrapping and small gifts. Even one item would make a difference. If you would like to order some please contact Sue Smith, 3 Park View, 870221. You can also look at the catalogue at www.unicef.org.uk/shop. The annual charity Christmas card sale is being held in St. Andrews Town Hall on Saturday 30th October from 10 – 4, admission free. UNICEF cards will be on sale here along with cards from many other charities.

BEAUTIFUL FIFE
Balmullo Community Council
In the May issue, we explained that we had entered the Beautiful Fife 2010 competition, hoping to receive an award for the village in response to the floral displays and many attractive gardens. The judges visited on 29 July and spent about 30 minutes walking around the centre of Balmullo (Pitcairn Drive, School Road, Hayston Park and Main Street) and looking along the other streets. They also asked us questions about the level of participation, funding sources, community groups etc. They took away the June Newsletter to study. Marks were awarded by them under 3 main headings – Horticultural Achievement, Environmental Responsibility and Community Participation, with the total mark determining whether we achieved the Gold, Silver Gilt, Silver or Bronze standard. We attended the awards ceremony in Glenrothes and were delighted to be presented with a Silver award by Provost Frances Melville. The certificate is on display at Burnside Hall and also forms this month’s newsletter cover. 51 communities from Fife entered, 12 more than 2009 and Silver was the highest level achieved by any new entrant. We recently received a copy of the judges’ marks and comments e.g. “The Balmullo group has thoughtfully presented the best Balmullo has to offer”; “Balmullo has a large number of well kept gardens”; “Good publicity through a very good Newsletter”. We have also been given the judges’ suggestions for enhancements and improvements which gives us some ideas for 2011. Well done to everyone who helps to make Balmullo such an attractive village.

President Mrs. Mary Campbell welcomed members to the meeting on Thursday 7th October. Our speaker for the evening was chocolatier Douglas Watson from Newburgh, who began by giving a us a brief history of chocolate, created by the Aztecs then brought to Europe and England. Douglas then explained the differences between dark, milk and white chocolate and what to look for when buying it. He brought a selection of chocolates and after trying various samples we were able to purchase mixed bags of truffles. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed a very interesting talk and Penny Wiles gave a vote of thanks for an entertaining evening. Competition winners: Christmas Cracker

THE HEAD GARDENER Chores for October are to get the grass trimmed as it is still growing. The greenhouse needs a clean out. Wash it with disinfectant then give it a wash down with water. You can bring in your plants. Cut them back and re-pot and clean them up. Make sure that if you have a heater it is ready for use. When you cut back your plants there may be that some of the shoots can be used as cuttings. This is the time to get your bulbs planted if you want them for Christmas but also get your tubs filled up for a show next year. Hope you will have a few entries for the Balmullo and Leuchars Autumn Flower Show at the end of the month.
OCTOBER IN THE GARDEN
Prof. Jeremy Greenwood
The heart of any wildlife-friendly garden is the compost heap. While the material is rotting down it provides a home to a myriad of small creatures, especially if (as it should) it rests directly on the soil. It gives refuge for larger animals like toads, voles and hibernating hedgehogs. When the compost is spread on the garden it has even more benefits. Of immediate concern to the gardener, it enriches the soil with plant nutrients and helps to retain moisture during the dry periods, while giving it a structure that drains in the wet. In addition, it continues to support the small animals that are as much part of a wildlife garden as the birds and other more obvious inhabitants. Not only do the mini beasts deserve a home in their own right but they are part of the food-chain that supports the larger species: only lawns with plenty of earthworms will attract many thrushes and blackbirds. And, as Charles Darwin showed, the earthworms are key soil engineers, aerating and draining it with their burrows and turning it over slowly but surely with their worm-casts - but they will only flourish if there is plenty of organic matter for them to feed on. So, when you are doing all those tidying-up jobs about which the Head Gardener reminded us last month, use the results to feed the compost heap. If you have too much woody and fibrous material for the compost, the next use for it is to feed a couple of "slow heaps" in hidden corners - piles of twigs, beech-leaves, artichoke and sunflower stems and other material that may take years to break down. These will eventually provide leaf-mould that will feed the garden and in the meantime they provide hibernation refuges for ladybirds, spiders, butterflies and a host of other creatures. Another good use for woody material is to shred it and use it as a mulch, to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds - and provide food and shelter for the soil animals. The earthworms will gradually work the material into the soil, with the same benefits as compost. The lawn-mower is another important source of mulch; my garden gobbles up every last scrap of grass-clippings. Good soil is not inert and dead but a living system which, if properly fed, rewards us with vigorous plants and abundant wildlife. People sometimes worry that providing the mini beasts with food and shelter will result in some of them attacking the garden plants. It will. But in balanced natural habitats, such as rich organic soils provide, individual pest species rarely get out of hand because they are eaten by the other inhabitants. Our song thrushes, having survived the dry spells in the summer by smashing snails, have recently been harvesting caterpillars from the brassicas.
