ANNOUNCEMENTS
From the Community Council
Thank you to all who turned up at our April meeting. The business that was dealt with is as follows. The Community Payback Scheme has tidied up the Quarry Road as far as the quarry and will continue to do so every couple of weeks. This is the only part of this road which is adopted by Fife Council which is unfortunate as the rest of the road is badly damaged by potholes. Whinnybrae is also in need of urgent repair and since it is an adopted road we can only hope it will soon be seen to. We have now lost our “lollipop man” due to cutbacks so please all have care when passing the school especially during school hours. We are also minus Paul Swan our local Janitor as he has now retired. We wish him well in his retirement. We are still awaiting some overgrown hedges to be cut back from the pavements. Letters are being sent round from Fife Council. We have also asked that the fence at Lomond Place be repaired. The cleansing department are sweeping up the gravel from the footpaths and they will store it for re-use therefore there will be no landfill costs. The portacabin has now had all services cut off and if the good weather continues it will shortly be removed from the park. Fife Athletic Club will hold their annual race on 11th August. It will start at Balmullo farm, go up past Cuplahills on to the top of Lucklawhill then back down to finish at the farm. Most of the cars will be parked at Burnside Hall. Balmullo farm ground has become a dumping area and rats have been seen there. This has been reported to Fife Council. We have also asked that they have the remaining building checked as it looks very dangerous and children have been seen playing around there. We have asked to take part in the Beautiful Villages competition again this year – here‟s hoping we do well again! Chairman, Zoe Sanders, had received a letter from Dr Brian Johnston thanking everyone for the gift he received last month.
Our next meeting is Monday 9th May. Please come and join us.
EDITORIAL

Questions were asked re the pot holes and we have notified the serious bits to Fife Council. Unfortunately since no one is prepared to help with Quarry Road we would advise all drivers to take extra care if you must go that route. We are happy to note that the bridge at Dairsie is now open which allows us to go to Pitscottie without detouring via either Cupar to Strathkinness. There was a discussion on the Balmullo to Leuchars Path update but since we had no further information it has been put back to a later meeting. I have a map showing the route of the Balmullo Trail Race on Thursday 11th August at 7.30pm. I will have it put in the notice board at the spar shop I hope you all enjoy a happy Easter. Our next meeting is May 9th in the school.

President Mrs. Mary Campbell welcomed members to the meeting on Thursday 7th April. Our guests for the Inter-Institute visit were members of Balmerino SWRI, who entertained us with songs, quizzes and a very interesting talk about Cookery Books over the last 100 years. Our Sales Table proved very successful, with a wide variety of cakes and candies - thanks to all who donated and bought. All present had a most enjoyable evening and Doreen Hopkins gave our visitors a vote of thanks. Competition winners: Easter Card Three Marzipan Fruits Flower of the month 1st Margaret Auchterlonie Mary Campbell Mary Campbell 2nd Ann Falconer 3rd Marjorie Pasley The next meeting will be on Thursday 12th May with a visit to Balgove Larder, near St. Andrews. Members should meet at 7.00 pm at Burnside Hall car park, where transport will be organised. Note that this is a week later than usual because of the Scottish Election on 5 th May. There are no competitions. New members are always welcome.
YPR UPDATE Well Done to Alex Fyfe & Josh Martin, who were successful in the recent Scottish Youth Parliament elections. They were announced as MSYPs for North East Fife at an event on the evening of Friday 25th March. The YPR group would like to congratulate them on their success and wish them all the best in their new roles. If you would like to see Alex & Josh, or ask them any questions, the intention is that they will both be at our meeting on 13th June.
BALMULLO GOLF SOCIETY
Peter Colford
This month saw us head to the much changed Elmwood Golf Course. Over the last few years the course has seen many changes and improvements including a much changed layout. A healthy 17 played, with the weather dry and a steadily increasing wind, the course played well. Dave Goodwin on top form again winning by three points over Kenny Field. Harry Black was the most accurate at the 9th hole winning Nearest the Pin and the Yellow Ball team were Paul Fenwick, Dave Goodwin and Nicol McNair. Gordon Laing won the hidden holes and Dave Goodwin wore The Bandit’s Hat. Next month (1st May) we head up to Alyth to play the Glenisla course. At 6402 yards this par 71 parkland layout features undulating greens, rolling fairways and five water hazards all set in beautiful surroundings. The variation in holes makes Glenisla both challenging to play and a memorable golfing experience. The most challenging hole, the 612 yard par five 12th requires two well played shots to set up a straightforward third. The undulating green is very much a characteristic of the course as is the layout of the hole which rewards well placed shots. The 18th hole is fronted by the Alyth Burn which makes the second shot a very daunting one – a great finishing hole.
THE HEAD GARDENER Well April is here again so it will be a busy time sowing seed, taking cuttings and planting your potatoes in the ground or in tubs also onions and shallots. The greenhouse is full with pot plants, cuttings of all kinds and also seedlings of cabbage, onions, lettuce and bedding plants of marigolds, asters, cosmos and gazanias. As I am writing this article about getting the garden all nice and tidy, it is heavy rain and hail! All your winter pruning and cutting back should be finished, but remember if a shrub is flowering wait until it has finished flowering before you prune. We cut the grass for the first time this weekend and the next time it is cut we will rake it and also give it a feed.

BURNSIDE HALL
Keith Parker
The Hall continues to provide excellent facilities for the village and relies on the volunteers who make up the Management Committee to ensure the financial security of the hall and maintain the first class facilities. Nominations are invited for the Management Committee for the coming year and such nominations, proposed and seconded, should be given to the Secretary Kim Carr 16 Burnside Balmullo ( 8700914 ), seven days before the AGM. Regular Hall users are eligible to nominate a representative to the Committee. Any items for inclusion on the Agenda should also be submitted to Kim. You may have noticed the Solar panels which now sit on the roof, which are a contribution for future reduced power costs. Other work in reducing power consumption is on-going in an attempt to reduce the ÂŁ3000 plus ,which we spend each year on heating the building. Please conserve power when using the Hall. Come along to the AGM and share your thoughts and ideas with ours, to ensure we maintain the most cost efficient village facility that we can. A reminder to everyone using the open space around the Hall that as the evening light remains longer and outdoor activities increase, please ensure the grounds remain clear of dog mess and other rubbish, so play time on the grass doesn't become a messy and/or smelly affair. Please remember when activities are taking place in the hall you are kindly requested not to use or play in the car park or the grounds. This request is to ensure that people using the Hall and grounds are not disturbed and that the risks of accidents to people or cars in the car park are minimised. Please take great care if cycling or playing in the vicinity of the car park as apart from the cars, very large lorries collect from the bins and have restricted visibility and some have difficulty in manoeuvring, which is why, thanks to the Quarry, some large rocks have been placed to keep vehicles off the grass. Enjoy the summer, enjoy the Hall facilities and please help keep the area tidy especially around the bins - if the bins are full please take items away and please don't leave non recycling material lying around as someone, i.e. the Hallkeeper has to clear up any mess, which is a bit unfair. It is our village hall, so please help to look after it and the grounds for the benefit of all. Burnside Hall AGM
Wednesday 1st June 2011 7.30 at the Hall. All Welcome.

RAYMOND BLANC AT PITTORMIE
Euan Cameron
A BBC researcher contacted us to see what raspberries we would have in September as they were preparing for an episode in the new series of Raymond Blancâ€&#x;s Kitchen Secrets called Summer Fruits. They wanted Scottish raspberries and they preferred them to be grown outside. We had a late variety called Autumn Bliss and also some young Glen Doll which were fruiting at the time. Raymond Blanc came up with the camera crew on Tuesday September the 14th, the day after they had filmed on a fishing boat on the East Neuk. They filmed for about 4 hours looking at different aspects of producing raspberries. Raymond was also interested in our orchard fruit as he is currently planting his own orchard at his Le Manoir Aux Quat' Saisons. After they finished we had to package up some fruit to be couriered down to his kitchens, to be used in the next part of the filming. To give him a good Scottish welcome, my mother made a pot of soup with a ham hock. After giving him some soup, he went back to the pot to dig out some of the ham from the hock! We sent him away with some fruit beer made with our Tayberries and Julie Campbell (from Balmullo) very kindly gave him one of her paintings of the Farm Shop He was a really lovely guy who REALLY knows about growing produce. We had a great day with the crew, producer and director and researchers. If you would like to watch Raymond at Pittormie Farm on BBC iPlayer, then please go to :- http:// www.bbc.co.uk/i/b0105rry/
Who is Raymond Blanc? Raymond Blanc is totally self-taught. Today he is one of the country's most respected chefs. Born in Besancon, in eastern France in 1949. Raymond was inspired by the land, and most of all by his mother. Raymond started his career in England as a waiter at the Rose Revived Restaurant, and when the chef was taken ill one day he took over‌ He now has achieved the prestigious accolade of Two Michelin Stars. He has written countless books, made many television programmes, and ALSO runs his chain of restaurants. In 2007 he was awarded an O.B.E. in recognition of his services in promoting culinary excellence and for raising awareness of the importance of healthy food as a central element of family life.

SUMMER FRUIT
Ina Cameron
Since the fruit season will soon be upon us perhaps you will be interested in preparing fruit for freezing. Fruit browns quickly when handled, so prepare it as quickly as possible and do not leave exposed to the air for too long. Keep it in a bowl of acidulated water, made from 2 litres (3½ pints) water with 1 – 2 tablespoons lemon juice or mild vinegar added. This is known as dipping. After dipping, drain the fruit on paper towels to remove as much moisture s possible. This prevents ice forming around the pieces when they are frozen and keeps them from sticking together. The following fruits freeze well: apples, apricots, blackberries, blackcurrants, cherries, peaches, plums, raspberries, redcurrants, rhubarb and strawberries. Peel, core and slice apples. Stem and pit cherries. Berries and currants should have stems removed; melon should be peeled and cubed or made into balls with a melon baller. Stone and slice or halve apricots, peaches and plums. To remove the stone from such tree fruits, carefully cut around the fruit following the natural groove. Gently twist the halves in opposite directions, separate and remove stone. Freeze enough for use at one time in a plastic bag or container, date and seal and lay gently in freezer „till frozen then it can be stacked together. ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** DON’T SHOUT AT ME I only work here because I am too young for the pension, Too old for a paper round and Too tired to have an affair!
