CANVASSING WOES
Councillors Maggie Taylor & Tim Brett ‘there is someone at the door’ and yet no one bothers to answer. It might be that there is a big football match on or there may be some crisis in the soap world and that household is none too interested in meeting possible councillors. The temptation, which I assure you is always resisted is to remember who did not answer the door and yet a month or a year later those living there make an impassioned plea for the councillor to do something about something that is bothering them. The weather also plays an important role in canvassing. People are more likely to answer the door if the sun is shining although perversely we have received the promise of votes from people when it is raining heavily. These expressions of support go into the category of ‘if they are looking out for votes in this weather, then they will obviously be very dedicated councillors’. You may well wonder why anyone would want to be a local politician and it may upset your prejudices to know that we like many colleagues do so for the best reasons; that of working for the betterment of the community. And remember local councillors are not responsible for wars, unemployment, and the debt in Greece, nationalism or bankers bonuses. We are the politicians you will want to complain to if the pavements are icy, the bins are not emptied and the streetlights burn all day and night.
Every single person who goes and knocks on doors whether they be the postie, the door to door salesman or just someone like Tim and I wanting to be a councillors knows there are two main types of dogs. They are either the big barking type that you can hear as you open the garden gate or you can visualise as they claw the back of the door while the owner shouts at the ‘down boy, down’. We meantime have a vision of a massive hound about to be unleashed upon us. Or they are the small and sneaky type that lies quietly behind the door ready to ambush the fingers pushing something through the letter box. They may look like sausages to you little dog, but these are our fingers! Once the door has been opened, those in this latter small dog category also attack your ankles as the owner tries to reassure you that they are just being playful. A similar line is taken by the owners of the big slobbery dogs that jump and slaver all over us as we try to smile and present ourselves as good candidate councillors. So we try not to be dog phobic’s as we go from door to door canvassing for support. They are all kept as pets we tell ourselves and not as attack dogs. In some ways, having a dog or dogs jumping all over you is preferable to being ignored. Time and again when you knock on the door, you can hear the television, you can also hear someone shout,

Ina Cameron
Have been asked by our friendly policeman Gavin Rae if we could alert him of any street parties likely in this area during the festivities for the Jubilee, and also the Olympics and Torch procession. His only concern is to ensure that the Police can assist in keeping everyone safe and able to enjoy the spectacle.

BURNSIDE HALL CAR PARK - CAUTION The car park at Burnside Hall is being used as an off-road play area for children, riding bikes or scooters. The Hall Committee have no objection in principal to this, but are very concerned that a child may be hurt in an accident. The recycling area in the corner of the car park is visited frequently and at all times of day by residents in cars. It is also visited regularly by a large lorry which empties the recycling containers. Children can get absorbed in their games and fail to pay attention when speeding around the car park. Similarly, car and lorry drivers may be unaware of children playing in this area until
Community Council they suddenly appear and the driver has to brake suddenly or take avoiding action. We ask parents to be aware that their children may play here and make sure they are warned about the potential dangers. If there is a function or meeting on at the Hall, then the car park is in use with cars being parked and a lot of vehicle movement so playing is not allowed and any children playing will be asked to leave. When the car park is empty, children can play but should always be aware and look out for vehicles. None of us want an accident to a child in Burnside Hall car park.

Ann Falconer
Our April event was the Billy Anderson Ceilidh, which was an excellent evening, as always. Billy was in great form on the accordion, ably backed by Kenny on drums and son Ian on guitar. The jokes flowed freely between dances and most of the company took to the floor. A special guest with Billy was Deborah Lunan from Kingsbarns, who played flute and penny whistle, both solo and backed by the band. Her deft touch and choice of music delighted the company. The children who won the Primary School Burns competition in January came along and repeated their winning pieces. Lucy, Neil and Robert performed confidently in front of a large audience, and later joined us in the dancing. Our next event is a music night in the Balmullo Inn on 22 June. Bruce Davies, singer, songwriter and guitarist makes a welcome return with his blend of Scottish and Folk music. Tickets will be available from Committee members nearer the time.

BALMULLO S.W.R.I. Ann Falconer President Mrs. Ann Falconer welcomed members to the meeting on Thursday 5th April. Our guests for the Inter-Institute visit were members of Creich SWRI, who entertained us with a demonstration of painting on acetate. This formed the basis for making some very original greetings cards. We also enjoyed a culinary quiz which was illuminating but very testing. Our Sales Table proved very successful, with a wide variety of cakes and candies - thanks to all who donated and bought. All present had a most enjoyable evening and Wilma Mackie gave our visitors a vote of thanks. Competition winners: Empire biscuits 1st Evelyn Erskine 2nd Jacqueline Stockton 3rd Rita Crush

CALLING ALL CREATIVE GARDENERS IN BALMULLO As part of the Balmullo Gala we are hosting a gardening competition where by we invite children to make a garden in a shoe box and adults are invited to do a floral display in a shoe (one you won’t wear again). All of these that enter will be on display within the Tea & Coffee tent and the winner will be judged by a member of the Gardening Club. Wild about Wildflowers The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 will see many special events and celebrations. The Royal Horticultural Society launched Britain in Bloom earlier this month and as part of that, packs of wildflower seeds were made available to local communities and “In Bloom” groups. We applied successfully for a pack of seeds, which includes Corn Poppy, Cornflower, Corn Marigold, Corn Chamomile and Corn Cockle, giving a nice range of red, blue, yellow and white colours. The seeds have been sown in small beds between the young trees on the flood bank in the park at Burnside Hall. This area is in full sun and is not liable to be trampled on or disturbed. Now we just have to wait for the seeds to grow and hope for a real splash of colour which should look natural and be attractive to bees and butterflies and wildlife generally.

OUR POST OFFICE MANAGER
Hannah Goldsack
Well, it’s been nearly eight months since I took up my position as manager. It depends who you ask as to what my official title is. Correspondence from my employers, CJ Lang and Sons Ltd, just calls me the Post Office Manager. When I applied for the job, I was told I was taking on the roll of ‘Officer in Charge’. For the purposes of applying for car insurance, I have to refer to myself as a Sub-Postmistress. But if all of that’s a bit too confusing, feel free to just call me Hannah! Having moved up here from my home town of Skipton, North Yorkshire to study Modern Languages and Linguistics at St Andrews, I have to admit to being a little surprised by my eventual career choice. I graduated in June 2011 but didn’t manage to make it to my graduation ceremony – I was getting married in New Zealand that same week. After only a couple of weeks in the Post Office, I was approached by a teacher from Balmullo Primary School, telling me that the P1 pupils were doing a project on the Post Office. Keen to get more involved, I agreed to go down to the school to following week and talk to the children about just what we do behind that counter (something I wasn’t 100% on myself at that time – some would argue that not much has changed!). Feeling just a touch of trepidation, I managed to enlist the help of my colleague Chris. It wasn’t long before we’d decided we would need the help of just one more person – that stalwart of the postal services, Postman Pat! Where we didn’t prove too inspirational with our talk of letter sizes, delivery options and the Penny Black, Postman Pat stepped in to save our bacon and was a resounding success! Anyone who’s been in the Post Office since September will no doubt have seen our gallery of the children’s Postman Pat colourings - more exciting than a blank wall if you ask me! I’m hoping that we can make our visit to the school an annual event so watch this space for a whole new exhibition!
