LEUCHARS AND DISTRICT GARDENING AND CRAFTS CLUB Leuchars & District Gardening & Crafts Club held their annual Summer Flower Show on Saturday 3 August at Burnside Hall, Balmullo. The show was o f f ic ia lly o pe n ed by President Mr. James Murray, who welcomed the large number of early visitors and thanked the club committee for their excellent work in staging another successful event and seeing the club go from strength to strength. There were an excellent number of entries in over 250 classes, plus the gardens classes which were judged on the previous weekend. Both the large hall, with the cut flowers, pot plants, vegetable and craft classes and the small hall, with floral art, children’s and novice classes, were a riot of colour. The judges were impressed with the high quality of the entries, especially in the pot plant, cut flowers and floral art sections. The vegetable sections were also well supported, with the weather this year being more conducive to good produce. While the children’s sections were less popular than last year, the entries were still imaginative and of a high quality. The novice sections were well suited to younger or less experienced entrants. The usual raffle, with many of the prizes donated by local businesses, was drawn with much hilarity before the presentation of prizes. Our guest presenter this year was local dancing teacher Mrs.

ANDREW FALCONER

Sheila Cook. Among the winners of the main trophies were William Duff, James Finlay, Tom Nelson, James Lowe, William Loudon, Mrs Ann Duff, Andy Smith, Mrs Vera Drysdale and Gethyn Burgess. The show was closed by club chairman Gwenyth Mitchell, who gave a general vote of thanks, particularly to Mrs Cook and the club committee, but with a special mention for the additional volunteers who helped to set up the show, stock and run the cake & candy stall, serve refreshments and clear the halls afterwards. Overall, it was another very successful village flower show, with the committee already looking forward to their next big event, the Autumn Flower Show. Before that, we had our first Winter Talk on Thursday 10 October. The speaker was Jess Smith, well-known author and storyteller on Travellers in Scotland. This proved to be a very interesting and entertaining evening, with Jess recounting many stories of her childhood and upbringing. Her informal chat with many witty anecdotes of living and travelling around in a secondhand bus which her father converted for the family kept the audience enthralled and amused. Our next winter talk is on Photography with local photographer Janice Dewar on Thursday 14 November at 7:30pm in Burnside Hall.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

BALMULLO COMMUNITY COUNCIL

The next meeting will be in Burnside Hall at 7.30pm on Monday 11th November. A copy of the Minutes will be available on the shelves at the Post Office.

EDITORIAL You will have noticed in October issue that we received a Silver for our floral displays. On behalf of myself and many many people who all feel that our Treasurer Andrew Falconer should have received a gold medal himself for all his hard work tending to most of the flower tubs throughout the village. Thank you Andrew.

MACMILLAN COFFEE AFTERNOON This was held in Burnside Hall on Friday 27th September. I wish to thank everyone who came along to support this venture. A special thanks to all those who baked, gave books and raffle prizes. Also thanks to the village shop who donated a jar of sweets. Thanks also go to the ladies who organised it all and gave their time making lovely

YOUR COUNCILOR 'It is perhaps not the most interesting fact but I can tell you that councillors tend to get fewer complaints in the summertime than they do in the darkness of winter. Some of the issues in my in-tray in the dark months of the year such as slippy pavements, empty salt boxes and non functioning street lights obviously do not crop up in the summer. But others less welcome and in abundance include a rise in dog fouling problems. On dark mornings and dusky evenings, some irresponsible owners allow their pets to foul either the pavements or the play parks thinking that no one will see them, unconcerned with what is happening. There is also the problem of youngsters when they come home from school their job is to take the dog out, many

I think we all had a lovely few hours meeting our friends and having a chat. My thanks also goes to Linda our hall keeper for setting everything ready for us.

MAGGIE TAYLOR of them not being armed with poo bags. These inconsiderate pet owners give no thought to the responsible dog owners and members of the public who have to watch where they walk to avoid the mess. But even when I remove these the summer pile of problems is smaller than the other six months of the year. The only reason I can think of for this discrepancy is that people are generally more content having had days of sunshine rather than battling through snow storms and floods. Incidentally this is not a call for more complaints and "things that the councillor should be doing" during the summertime; it is merely an observation that when the sun shines, there are fewer problems around. We have had an excellent summer and a wonderfully mild and sunny autumn. I for one hope the coming winter behaves itself. Cold frosty weather is find but not a rerun of last year's soggy season with all the council problems that come along with it."

Next Balmullo Community Council meeting is NOVEMBER 11th @ 7.30pm in the Burnside Hall.

NEW Married Couples Allowance Hot off the press From 6.4.15 married couples and civil partnerships will be able to transfer up to £1000 of their allowances to the other half.

Example; take a state pension age couple where one spouse has unused allowances. Then they will be able to transfer £1000 allowances to the spouse who does pay tax. This will save £200 IN real money. The same might apply to a couple where one works and the other stays at home, perhaps to look after children- tax saving £200.

Looks like it might apply where one spouse is a higher rate taxpayer too- tax saving £400 or £200 but I’m not sure about this one yet. BALMULLO S.W.R.I. President Mrs. Ann Falconer welcomed members to the meeting on Thursday 3rd October. Our speaker for the evening was Anne McFadyen, who teaches the art of creating Stained Glass items at Forgan Arts Centre and was assisted by David Pasley from Balmullo, a member of her class for several years. Anne showed us the tools of the trade and explained how they were used. She demonstrated how the glass is cut and soldered and then finished a decorative mirror she had prepared earlier. Several members tried their hand at cutting the glass and finishing it. Anne and David had a sales table where members were able to purchase from a variety of colourful and unusual pieces. The demonstration proved very engrossing and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the talk. Ann Falconer gave a vote of thanks to Anne & David. Our team for the Federation Quiz on Friday 27th September at the Lumsden Hall in Freuchie was Ann Falconer, Mary Reilly, Evelyn Erskine and Andrew Falconer, one of several men taking part. YOUR M.P.

SIR MENZIES CAMPBELL come seeking my advice or assistance. Over the years the last of these has become more complex and more challenging. The constituents attending my ‘surgeries’ have brought to me more and more challenging problems reflecting the more complicated nature of daily life since my election in 1987.

My wife Elspeth and I have particularly enjoyed and valued the many community events which we have attended since my election, the Remembrance Sundays in Cupar and St Andrews, the art festivals the length and breadth of North East Fife, Lifeboat Gala Days at Anstruther, cutting ribbons and unveiling plaques, presiding as Chieftain of Highland Games and debating the issues of the day at every general election since I was first adopted as the Liberal Democrat candidate in 1979, 1983, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2001, 2005 It is never easy to say it is time to retire. But after and 2010; criss-crossing the constituency to every 26 years (28 by the next election in 2015) I have corner from Newport to Lundin Links (and not begun that process. As is often the case, many well- excluding Balmullo!). wishers have said but why are you retiring at the My special interests have become defence and general election in 2015? YOUR M.S.P. Like any other human being, I abhor human trafficking, and despise the profiteering that serves as an incentive to traffickers to continue their ugly trade. Whilst many of us can only sit and watch, with horror, the effect this business has on millions of people, globally, the fact is that it happens on our doorstep. It is time that this business was ceased. Through my position as an MSP, and member of the Cross-Party Groups on Human Rights, and Trafficking, I have asked several questions of Scottish Ministers regarding the Government’s reaction to the trafficking issue, and what actions they are taking to address it. An awareness initiative was launched earlier this year, and steps are being taken to make it easier to prosecute traffickers but, based on recent evidence, more can be done. For two weekends in succession, news reports have centred on stories of the human tragedy of migrant ships off the coast of Italy, leading to the Prime Minister of Malta declaring the Mediterranean Sea is becoming a “graveyard”. Ships overflowing with people seeking a new life in Europe, away from their appalling lives in Africa or seeking an escape from the conflict in Syria, have fallen foul to the lure of promises made by traffickers of a better tomorrow. These traffickers, like those who traffic people into the sex industry or into forced labour, benefit financially from human misery – the misery suffered by those who have died and those they have left behind. The 18th of October was anti-slavery day – it is very sad that, in the 21st century, we need to be reminded that this is still with us, and still very much a part of developed societies even if, in many cases, it is hidden beneath the surface. Tackling human trafficking will require cooperation between countries and, to a further extent, continents. I recently had the

ROD CAMPBELL

opportunity of listening to the European Union’s human trafficking coordinator when she attended a meeting of the European and External Affairs Committee of the Scottish Parliament - she accepted that too little was known about trafficking but that most trafficking within the EU was of EU citizens. Whatever view is taken on the constitutional debate, it is absolutely clear that there needs to be international cooperation on this matter. Never before have so many people been able, by virtue of social media, and the internet, to access information on what is going on in other parts of the world and, accordingly, put their all into improving their lot. It simply is not possible for the rich countries of the world to seek to isolate themselves from the consequences of migration. We need to recognise that migration has enriched societies through the ages and, while people struggle this winter with high fuel bills, rising food prices and ever increasing gas and electricity bills I hope we can recognise that there are millions of people out there who would risk their lives to have a chance of attaining what we have.

CUPLAHILLS FARM UPDATE

STEPHEN MELVILLE

There goes another harvest year and the next has already commenced. Winter oilseed rape is planted and through the ground and winter barley and winter wheat is currently being sown. At Cuplahills we finished the last of the spring oilseed rape on 18th September at 2am just hours before the rain came down. This year’s harvest has been remarkably easy with such dry conditions and no risk of the combine sinking out of site. Although not possible to say until everything is sold, it appears that yields at Cuplahills were good. Wheat appears to have yielded approximately 4t/ ac, spring barley 2.6t/ac, winter oilseed rape, 1.5t/ac and spring oilseed rape 1.1t/ac. Quality of grain has also been very good, but unfortunately sale prices have slipped by up to 25% as world production has increased. A huge thank you to Will Pickard for his thoroughness with the combining once again this year. Equally, thanks to all at Straiton and the other contractors who provide such a professional and invaluable service whilst undertake the field work at Cuplahills throughout the year. How strange to think back only one year, when conditions were so appallingly bad, yields were down, moral was as low as many a man on the land can remember and establishing crops was a battle if not impossible. What a difference a year makes!

make also sure that Amanda is out of the way so as to avoid any more untimely and ill-advised comment to the RSPB judges such as this year’s classic, whilst the judges supped on tea, “I hate crows, so did my Dad, he used to shoot them”! As expected after the poor spring there has been very little in the way of fruit in Willies Wood this year. No plums or cherries and seemingly no hazel nuts either. Thankfully the apple trees have done well so time to stock up so that we can feed the birds through the winter.

Environmental

We have now completed our first years trading having opened in August 2012. I think it would be fair to say that the cabins have been an unequivocal success and have surpassed all of our expectations. Occupancy has been far higher than that which was forecast in the original business plan. The feedback to date in our visitor books and on Trip Advisor has been incredibly heartening with gusts waxing lyrical about their experience and love of the views, the surrounding area and facilities on offer. Time now to look at what other facilities we can offer to further enhance the customer experience.

Earlier in the year I entered the RSPB and Telegraph Nature of Farming Awards 2013. I was hopeful that Cuplahills would win the Scottish leg after a successful site visit from the RSPB. The judges were shown the efforts that have been made to improve the feeding, breeding and nesting habitats for wildlife under the Scottish Rural Development Plan and they were given a farm tour on Dad’s quad bike, before being treated to tea and cake in the farmhouse. Alas we were awarded a Highly Commended plaque having come runner up in Scotland. Perhaps next year we will go one better. I will

Courier Business Awards

Those of you who read The Courier in depth may have noticed that I am a finalist in the Courier Young Business Person of the Year Awards having entered the competition with our two businesses F Melville & Son and Cuplahills Country Cabins. Judging takes place in early October, with a short film to be made, and the winner announced at a dinner at the Fairmont Hotel in early November. Fingers crossed!

Education

Balmullo Primary School P5 and P6 completed a second farm visit just before the summer holidays. Thankfully the weather was considerably better this time around. The group came up to inspect the trees and hedges that they had helped plant and got a chance to ask some of questions. We are looking at the possibility of working with the Scottish Countryside Alliance Education Trust. The aim would be to provide groups of school children the opportunity to experience farming and the environment first hand and to gain an insight into rural life. This is only a possibility at present and more will be known on this front after a farm visit on 25th September from an SCAET representative.

Pre-heat the oven to 160C / Gas mark 3. Grease an 18cm (7 in) 7. shallow square cake tin and line with baking parchment. Measure the butter, sugar, eggs, ground rice, flour, baking powder and almond extract into a large bowl and beat for about 2 minutes until smooth. Spoon half the mixture into the 8. right half of the prepared tin as neatly as possible. Add a few drops

of red food colouring to the remaining mixture to turn it a deep pink colour, then spoon this into the left half of the tin. Try to get the join between the two mixtures as neat as possible. Smooth the surface of each half. Bake for about 35-40 minutes, well risen and springy to the touch. Leave to cool for a few minutes then turn out, peel off the parchment and finish cooling on a wire rack. 6. Trim the edges of the cake, then cut into 4 equal strips – 2 pink and 2 plain. Gently heat the apricot jam in a small pan. Use the jam to stick the 4 strips together to make a chequerboard effect. Brush the top of the assembled cake with apricot jam. Roll out the marzipan into an oblong the length of the cake and wide enough to wrap around it. Invert the cake onto the marzipan, then brush the remaining 3 sides with apricot jam. Press the marzipan neatly around the cake, arranging the join in one corner. Score the top of the cake with a criss-cross pattern and crimp the edges with your fingers to decorate.
