WILLOW WARBLER & CHIFFCHAFF (willow warbler)
ANDREW FALCONER unless really good views are obtained. There are some subtle differences in shape and plumage e.g. the supercilium is fainter, but the main distinguishing feature is its dark legs. Again the sexes are alike. The best way to identify a Chiffchaff is by its very distinctive song – a series of strong monosyllabic notes on 2 or 3 pitches sounding like “chiff chaff chiff chiff chaff chiff chaff …” sometimes going on for a few seconds. This can be heard from early April onwards. Chiffchaffs are more common where there are tall trees in deciduous or mixed woodland. In Balmullo it’s most often heard between the Quarry and School Road, but I’ve had one singing near the roundabout and another beside Cuplahills track.
(chiffchaff)
As Spring approaches, we can look forward to the return of summer visitors, notably the warbler families. The most common warbler in Scotland is the Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus), which can be found in any woodland, particularly birch or willow. It’s a fairly small bird at 11-12½ cm long and the sexes are alike. It’s greyish-green above and pale below, with a distinct supercilium (stripe above the eye) and pale flesh-coloured legs. It’s usually heard before being seen, flitting quickly around the tree canopy in search of insects. The song is a series of soft whistles, descending from a high note and lasting about 3 seconds. This singing is very evident in Lucklaw Wood from about mid-April till June, as the male birds establish territories and try to attract a female. The Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) is marginally smaller at 10-12 cm, but is very Photos courtesy of John Anderson, Crail difficult to separate from Willow Warbler

ANNOUNCEMENTS In the last issue, it was stated that “The flooding at Pittormie Farm is particularly bad, but unfortunately the farmer in question is unapproachable” which was potentially misleading. The farmer in question was not Mr Cameron of Pittormie Fruit Farm, although the flooding was close to his property.
BALMULLO COMMUNITY COUNCIL Fife Council’s Recycling Centres were established to meet the needs of householders who need to dispose of excess waste and recyclates. Most are available for use by small traders who purchase an annual Recycling Season Ticket. Recently concern has grown about increased use of centres by traders posing as householders. Unauthorised disposal of trade waste is a criminal offence. A review of the legal and potential illegal use of the Council’s Recycling Centres by Traders is currently being undertaken.

ANN FALCONER

The Nursery children recently visited the Tesco Store in Cupar. In the Nursery, the children had been learning all about healthy eating and where our food comes from. Tesco invited the children to take –part in the Farm to Fork Trail. Elaine and Callum showed us round the store. The children learned about the food groups which are needed to keep their body healthy and fit. They were given shopping lists and went looking around the store for the different foods on the list. For snack they enjoyed tasting different fruit and vegetables which was made into a funny face before eating. The children got to experience the job of a checkout operator. The Nursery Children had great fun! A big thank you to Tesco staff, customers and the parents who came to help on the trip.
Police Scotland came to visit as part of Traffic Control. They brought along Pop-up-Bob to see us! Can YOU spot Bob in the picture below?

The children enjoyed the challenge of problem solving outdoors.

NEVER TIRED OF BEING RETIRED It will soon be my George's birthday. It’s that day of the year when the figure on the right hand side of your age increases by one and you have to scroll further and further up on the online registration for something or other to find your birth year. You’ve done the hard part, spent 50 years of your life getting out of bed and getting into work, taken care of your family, and saved for this day. After decades of waking up to an alarm clock, it may feel luxurious to have no particular place to go. Retirement to us has an element of freedom. We can now spend the rest of our years following our own passions on our own timetable. Now is the time to expand on your interests, enjoying new hobbies whether it may be learning something new, reading, hiking, gardening, painting, photography, or even just playing dominoes or cards. We enjoy rambling, not just for the walking fitness but the love of the countryside as we are so lucky to live in a country with such varied areas to walk in, with a wonderful network of well maintained footpaths. What makes it more interesting is returning home with the feeling that we have achieved something that day and we can't wait to plan our next walk. George likes to keep photo diaries for memories of our trips. Last year our highlights were the Isle of Skye and the Isle of Arran, where we enjoyed leisurely walks in the fresh air, discovering the expansive sea views by day and the sunsets by night of both the BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION I wish to thank everyone who came along and helped/baked/donated and spent their money. CHRISTINA JACK islands’ beautiful coastlines, their wide range of landscapes and the wide variety of wildlife. We even rambled among the stags on Lochranza Golf Course. I also had quite an experience descending the hair raising Bealach-Na-Ba (the pass of the cattle) a twisting single track with very tight hair-pin bends through the pass and mountain (2,054 ft) (Applecross to Lochcarron) highly recommended, a perfect scenic drive, says George but me tight lipped as I held onto my seat!! Walking rarely requires expensive clothing or equipment, boots with a good sole, waterproofs (trousers and jacket tailored to repel the wind and light rain and which can dry out quickly) and a hat appropriate to the weather together with a fleece should the day be cold, are all you need. We always carry a hot and cold drink and a snack for the nibble break, both of which will keep the thirst and hunger at bay until we reach a pub or tearoom/cafe. Do always carry your sun lotion and of course, the midge spray. Rambling through England's Lake District beauties are this year's plan and I just might surprise myself and aim to climb Scafell Pike! Ha, ha, ha! If you don't want to drift afar, there are some great walks just a stone's throw from your doorstep. You too can leave the TV and sofa behind and get a little adventure discovering the new walk of life at 65! You'll never get tired of being retired! Pension planning
Even babies can have a pension fund with premiums of up to £3600 pa but they can’t get access to the fund till they are 55. Grandparents could think about this one. Let’s assume a man has his own LTD and his spouse/partner is on the payroll. If this is her only income then she might not have any income in retirement and her tax allowances will be unused. It is possible to have a company pension fund for her – where the company gets tax relief.
Premiums can be very high even on a lowly income. Then on her retirement she gets a pension but her tax allowances cover the income - Tax relief going in – but no tax coming out. Perfect. Getting near retirement. Pay tax at 40% or 45%?
Maximising pension funding should be a top priority. Save tax at your top rate but only pay tax on the pension at, probably 20%. This is intended for longer term planning as well as pre 5th April.
