GOLDCREST & WREN

ANDREW FALCONER

This month we feature 2 bird species which are very different but are the smallest of the regular breeders in Scotland - in fact Goldcrest is the smallest European bird. The Goldcrest (Regulus Regulus) is only 8.5 – 9.5 cm long. Resident birds are joined in winter by birds migrating from Northern Europe. They prefer coniferous or mixed woodland and are very mobile, sometimes hovering among the branches and picking off insects. They are usually heard before being seen, with thin high-pitched calls. Identification is fairly easy, with the golden yellow crown stripe which gives it its name and a very prominent dark eye. Adult male birds usually have some orange in the stripe. Both sexes are pale-green above and offwhite below with white wing-bars. They are relatively common around Balmullo,

especially along Quarry Road and in Lucklaw Wood.

The Wren is 9.5 – 10.5 cm long and is one of our most numerous and well-known species. They can be found in gardens, woodland with dense undergrowth, bramble bushes, overgrown clearings and scrub, really anywhere with decent cover. The very short, stubby tail, usually cocked up, is the distinctive feature along with the small size. Both sexes are reddish-brown above and brownish-white below, with fine streaks, also having an off-white supercilium (stripe above the eye). Again it’s often heard before being seen with a very loud and trilling song, consistently repeated. I often have a Wren visiting my garden (just one), working its way along the wooden fence looking for spiders and other insects. They can be seen and heard all over Balmullo, typically along the edges of Cuplahills track, in Willie’s Wood, along Quarry Road and Both photos courtesy of John Anderson, Crail. in Lucklaw Wood.

TATTIE HOWKERS WANTED

CHRISTINA JACK

Tattie picking, an old tradition, is now a distant memory. The mid 70's, an early rise at 5.00 a.m on a cold frosty October morning. Dressed in woolly socks and wellies, old trousers, old woolly jumper, navy zipped anorak and woolly gloves inside my marigolds. I knew the fingers of my gloves would soon be worn into holes! A short walk to the pick up point, I'd stand and wait and wait, thinking that the driver is late, my thoughts on the air that I exhaled into the cold, as it formed clouds similar to fog, like smoke from a cigarette. Then, a sigh of relief as the old Ford Transit Van came into view as it turned the corner. I would squeeze into the back of the van and say, 'good morning' to the rest of the squad and enjoyed the 'craic' on the hour's journey to the Tattie field. On our arrival, you would have enough time for a quick cuppa from your tartan thermos flask. The head of the squad or the 'Gaffer' we called him, would measure out our stents by putting twigs into the ground and some pickers would only manage half a stent. The tatties we picked were mainly Kerrs Pinks. The field would suddenly empty when the DHSS Officials turned up and most of the Tattie squad would be hiding among the bushes. After that event if we became short of folk, you would get a longer stent. The ground crisp with frost, the tractor pulled mechanical digger would start to unearth the tatties along the dreel and we would eagerly start picking as fast as we could, throwing the tatties into plastic oval baskets, before the digger came round again. The baskets would be emptied into a bogie. Seriously hard toil, with a lot of bending, kneeling and lugging the heavy baskets up your dreel, picking tatties was back breaking work. If it got too much, one of the pickers would hide a big

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

stone in the dreel to try and break the digger. Best when the digger broke down as it meant an early piece. We would all get comfy in the dreels to eat our sandwiches with our muddy fingers and drink hot Heinz tomato soup from our flask. Every piece time was never long enough but a great laugh and there was a good sense of community spirit helping each other especially if someone started to struggle and was nearly on their knees towards the end of the shift! Most of us kept a plastic carrier handy as we were allowed a wee bag of boilers to take home. Going home tired and cold, there was always plenty of Stovies and thick potato soup for evening dinner! The best bath ever was the first bath with Radox Salts after a cold day and you would fall asleep five minutes later. The second day you'd wake up and couldn't move but got up for another arduous day. Picking the tatties were more torturous on the second day as you ached all over but once you started picking again, your aches and pains began to ease off. All worthwhile come a Friday, pay day, when you got your Tattie money, think it was £6 a day. That's how I was taught of earning a living, growing up in the early 70's if I wanted to wear the latest fashions! Try asking the kids to do that nowadays - wonder what they will discuss or remember in thirty or forty years? Agriculture has changed and nowadays the tatties are harvested by huge tractors and modern expensive machines lifting acres of them. The only plastic tattie baskets are these used as laundry baskets. The tatties are all pre washed before being presented in their showroom bags to sit on the supermarket shelf. Aw, I feel old ...... but proud to have been from that generation! Gone are our Tattie Days!!!

ANN FALCONER

President Mrs. Ann Falconer welcomed everyone, including 2 new members, to the first meeting after the summer break on Thursday 1st September. We also welcomed special guest Ayron Teed, visiting from central Victoria, Australia. Sadly, we remembered long-serving members Isa Baxter, Betty Gough and Dolina Swyszcz, who have all passed away since our June meeting.

which connects and supports Women and Communities worldwide, through partnership, advocacy, sharing of knowledge and activities.

Our entertainment for the evening was provided by Committee member Jill Dhanjal, with a demonstration of Indian Cookery. Her theme for the evening was “Party Time”, which included a selection of dishes that would be served on a special occasion in India. She began with Vegetable Pakora, followed by a Vegetable Curry and a Lamb Curry. Jill described all of the different spices used and how these could be varied to suit individual tastes. Members enjoyed sampling the various dishes so much that every drop disappeared, leaving just a delicious aroma that filled the hall for a few hours.

OUR M.P.

Over the summer Parliament was in recess and not having to travel to London every week provided me with more opportunities to get out in the constituency, meet more people and see some of the great work going on locally. One of the groups I was lucky enough to catch up with was the Leuchars St Athernase Church Regeneration Team. It was great to meet up with members including the Rev John Duncan and team coordinator Carol Petrie and hear more about their efforts to make sure this fantastic building, which dates from 1150, is around for a long time to come. I also enjoyed opening Tayport Gala and visiting Gauldry Gala. Both are great community events and credit is due to organisers for putting in a great deal of hard work to ensure that these events take place every year. I was also very pleased to take part in celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Tay Road Bridge. This was a fantastic day which included a spectacular parade of vintage vehicles across the bridge as well as events in Newport, Tayport and Dundee. The proposed changes to bus timetables has been very concerning for people in North East Fife including those in the Balmullo area. In particular, I was contacted by a number of constituents about the possible loss of the direct link to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. I am pleased to say that after writing to Fife Council and Stagecoach, the bus company decided it would continue with the link to the hospital when the service changed to the new X53 a few weeks ago.

STEPHEN GETHINS

It’s great to meet so many inspiring people working so hard for the local area and the group behind Dementia Friendly St Andrews are no exception. This initiative is helping local people living with dementia, their family members and caregivers to remain involved in the social world. Anyone in the local community s hops , b us iness es , students, services and residents of St Andrews can receive free training on how to become ‘dementia friendly’ and make a real difference. The Dementia Friendly St Andrews Alliance members are currently organising social events and activities for all to promote the initiative. Look out on Facebook and Twitter for details of how you can get involved. One of the most outstanding things about the North East Fife constituency is its natural beauty. The East Sands in St Andrews is one such area so it was very concerning to hear that waste matter dredged from the harbour had been dumped on the beach. I was contacted by a number of constituents concerned about the impact this would have on the beach and bathing water. I have written to St Andrews Harbour Trust and the Cabinet Secretary for the Environment asking why this happened. I also wrote to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and received a response which confirmed the agency has been working closely with Fife Coast & Countryside Trust and with Marine Scotland, as the licensing authority for the harbour dredging operations and who engaged with the St Andrews Harbour Trust to arrange for the material to be removed.

13

OUR M.P. CONTINUED

SEPA will be undertaking additional investigations into this matter, to further establish how and why the material had been deposited on the beach to conclude this particular incident whilst seeking to prevent this happening again in the future. I will continue to monitor this situation. I was also very pleased to support efforts by Cupar and North Fife Local Tourism Association to encourage more visitors to this wonderful area. Members, comprising accommodation providers, restaurants and café owners, and those running local attractions and visitor centres, recognised that by working together they could boost tourism in Fife. The group has now produced a brochure showcasing many of the attractions in the area. The LTA is also linking in with the Welcome to Fife website welcometofife.com with touch screen digital information kiosks in three locations – Coffee

and Kilts in Cupar, Falkland Palace and Tayport’s Harbour café. There are many people across North East Fife enthusiastic about rugby and the Howe of Fife Rugby Club new £1.25 million community hub in Duffus Park, Cupar will be an asset to the whole area. The new facility is excellent and I’m sure it will be the envy of many other sports clubs across the country. Well done to all those involved in making this dream a reality. As always you can contact me by email Stephen.gethins.mp@parliament.uk or by calling 01334 657765. LEUCHARS AND DISTRICT GARDENING AND CRAFTS CLUB

BILL DUFF

The Club held their Annual Gardens Competition on Saturday 23 July and although the number of entries were down slightly on previous years, Mr Lex Bell our judge remarked on the quality of the gardens stating they were all quite remarkable with the variable weather gardeners have had to deal with this spring and summer. It made judging more dificult than last year as the only faults he found between entries were a bit of dead heading and some wind/sun scorch. being one of the first shows in the year hopefully this is a sign of the continuing strength of Flower Shows. The judges commented that they were all pleased with the quality of exhibits and on the benches being well filled especially the Crafts Sections. The Show was opened by our President Mr. James Murray who congratulated the committee for organising a marvelous show again this year. "It is always a delight to enter He congratulated all who had entered and the hall and be met with such a colourfull wished them well in their future horticultural scene" he commented. He also thanked the exhibitors for entering and hoped everyone endeavours. would have an enjoyable afternoon. Local success was had by Linda Reid, Pitcairn Drive in the Vegetable Gardens Section, Elizabeth Kerr, School Road in the Flower Gardens Section, Bob Herd in the Landscaped Garden Section, and Gwenyth Mitchell and Alison Jeffrey, Pitcairn Drive with their hanging baskets. The Club held their Annual Summer Flower Show in Burnside Hall, Balmullo on Saturday 6 August which was again very successful. Although entries generally remain similar to previous years there was a big increase in the Preserves, Baking, and Handicrafts sections with a number of new exhibitors. Let's hope The Trophies were presented by Mhairi Wilson who was presented with a bouquet of flowers this is a portent of things to come. by one of our younger exhibitors David We also had new exhibitors in the Cut Flowers Addison. and Vegetables sections a n d Local Trophy winners were Vegetables - George Redpath, Pot Plants - Gwenyth Mitchell, Floral Art - Ann Duff.

is sure to be a fun evening as last year. Although it is teams of 4, last year we made up teams of 4 from singles who came along including myself. Entry is ÂŁ2.50 which includes refreshments. Our Autumn Flower Show will be held in Burnside Hall this year on Saturday 29 October. This is based on Chrysanthemums with the usual other sections including an inter -SWI competition and Honey section, in which I hope there will be more entries than in the past, as from personal experience this has been a better year for beekeeping.

Gwenyth Mitchell, Chair, thanked everyone for making this one of the best shows she could remember, the committee and others who come along every year to help set up the show and on the day, the exhibitors who came from far and wide, the public and our many sponsors without whom the show would not continue. She then asked David Wilson our Vice President to present Lynn Murphy the hallkeeper with a bouquet of flowers as thanks for all her help and to give our best wishes on her return to her house after the recent fire. I hope all of the above is complete but if I have missed anyone my sincere apologies.

Our next event is a Beetle Drive in the Burnside Hall on Thursday 13 October. Come along as it

Although generally speaking it has been felt that this year has not been a particularily good year weatherwise I have found that my bees have been more content and easier to handle and although I have not been able to take off much honey I have doubled my stock of bees, something I've not done for a long time. I do not know if this is a local phenomenon due to a change of conditions locally as although I talk to my bees they don't reply to tell me why or if it a national betterment!
