ARTIST EVENTS & EXHIBITIONS INSIDE PARRWORLD with Martin Parr

THE PANACEA CASEBOOK

Friday 16 October 2009 / 18.30-20.30 / £6.00 (£4.50 concessions)

Thursday 29 October 2009 / 18.30-20.30 / FREE

BALTIC invites you to journey into Parrworld with a special event offering you insights from the artist behind the exhibition. Martin Parr will talk about his own photography, discuss the work he owns by other photographers and the choices behind his extraordinary collection of memorabilia from around the world.

A performance lecture featuring a puppet doctor, 3 artists and 6 remedies. Artists Zoë Walker & Neil Bromwich, Michael Pinsky, and Doctor Hillary present The Panacea Casebook; examining intersections between art and well being.

To compliment Parr’s photographic series Luxury, you will be served a glass of champagne (or soft drink) on arrival. The galleries will remain open until 20.30 for an exclusive private view of Parrworld. There will be a question and answer section followed by a book signing of the newly published book Luxury.

Asking the question is it possible for the work of artists to act as a social, political and economic panacea, Pinsky, Walker & Bromwich search for artistic ‘solutions’ that simultaneously offer the viewer / participant an aesthetic experience and a practical tool to improve life. The artists will sign copies of The Panacea Catalogue at the event. To reserve a place call 0191 478 1810 or email events@balticmill.com

Tickets available now in person from BALTIC SHOP or online from www.wegottickets.com

Panacea Case Book is made in collaboration with Dr Mark Down, Dr Hillary and Blind Summit Theatre. Funded by Welcome Trust.

MALCOLM McLAREN Shallow 16 October 2009 - 10 January 2010 / Ground Floor Cinema

Shallow is a series of original musical paintings or cut-ups composed by Malcolm McLaren from appropriated clips lifted from film which depict people before sex. The footage is spliced, repeated and slowed down, resulting in a hypnotic, layered and provocative work. This collection of musical paintings - portraits of people thinking, desiring, wanting, wishing, imagining having sex, have been dug out of the ruins of pop culture: pornographic films and pop music. McLaren has likened them to a map of feelings that navigate both the ‘look of music’ and the ‘sound of fashion’. Shallow has been shown to critical acclaim in Art Basel, London’s Royal Academy and in Times Square, New York.

AN EVENING WITH MALCOLM McLAREN Friday 13 November 2009 / 19.30-21.30 / £10.00 (£8.00 concessions) Malcolm McLaren has proven to be a visionary of pop culture for over thirty years and an artist in the most post-modern sense of the word. In London’s art schools, he studied drawing and painting before experimenting in radical, politicised artworks inspired by the Internationale Situationniste, the most famous of which was Punk. All his various life-long activities — as legendary shop conceptualist (Let It Rock, Too Fast To Live Too Young to Die, Sex, Seditionaries, World’s End and Nostalgia of Mud), his 12-year design partnership with Vivienne Westwood, pop music group creator and manager (Sex Pistols, Bow Wow Wow), singer/composer (Duck Rock, Fans, Waltz Darling, Paris), filmmaker, philosopher, politician (1999 London Mayoral candidate) are expressions of his art. Join us for an evening in the company of the man himself as he introduces the world premiere of his new video work and talks about his life and times as an artist.

Tickets available from Thursday 1 October in person from BALTIC SHOP or online from www.wegottickets.com

MARTIN PARR Continued...

Parr is known for his satirical documentation of British contemporary life; capturing a range of social demographics he offers a colourful social panorama of Britain today unmasking the banal and the offbeat with his wry look at class and wealth. Many of his images appear exaggerated and yet they are inventive and often humorous using colour and motif to great effect. For more than 30 years, Parr has been documenting society and everyday culture initially in Britian and Ireland but later across the world, taking in global phenomena such as mass tourism, consumerism, social and cultural events. For his new series Luxury, Parr shows the different ways in which people display their wealth. Choosing various locations across the world, and a range of situations including art fairs and race courses, such as Newcastle’s premier horse racing event The Northumbrian Plate, he has selected scenarios in which people are comfortable showing off their wealth. Designer clothes, champagne and parties are all part of this repertoire. As well as the more established wealth hot spots in Europe and America, there are photographs from the emerging world, including the Millionaires’ Fair in Moscow, the Dubai Art Fair and the Motor Show in Beijing. At such events the international jet-set can be observed as they proudly present the regalia of new money and opulence. The notion of collecting is fundamental to Parrworld as we are presented with Parr’s own photography, a remarkable selection of photographic works from internationally recognised artists, books taken from his several-thousand strong library and items collected from his international and UK travels.

Parrworld 16 October 2009 - 17 January 2010 / Level 3 & Ground Floor

An extraordinary collection of photographs has been brought together for the exhibition, exemplifying Parr’s respect and admiration for his peers. Presented here are works by UK photographers Jill Constantine, Paul Graham and Richard Billingham. There are several with North East associations; Chris Killip whose 1980s images of Tyneside endure, the photographer Graham Smith with his images of Teeside as well as current Newcastle based artist, Mark Neville. These are shown alongside works from highly respected international photographers such as David Goldblatt (South Africa), William Eggleston, (US) Frank Breuer (Germany) Gary Winogrand, (US) Bernd and Hilla Becher (Germany). Alongside the photography Parr has selected for display, his quirky collections of postcards and objects show his real individual flair as a collector with a fascination for the peculiar and curious. This assortment of commercial design and memorabilia documents key historical and political moments with original posters and leaflets from the 1984 UK miners strike, a collection of commemorative china from Margaret Thatcher’s term as Prime Minister, examples of prayer mats featuring the New York Twin Towers, a bizarre range of Saddam Hussein watches and his most recent collection of Barack Obama commemorative items. Parr’s collection also spills out beyond the gallery, with objects sited in BALTIC’s entrance and a large-scale banner on the exterior north face depicting a 1984 Miners strike poster. For this exhibition Parr will act as a photographer, collector and curator as Parrworld offers an entertaining yet serious analysis of photography as a contemporary medium.

KIMSOOJA 5 October 2009 - 17 January 2010 Level 4

BALTIC presents Korean artist Kimsooja’s first solo exhibition in the UK. The exhibition includes the major works A Needle Woman and A Laundry Woman-Yamuna River, India. A Needle Woman, composed of eight simultaneous videos, documents the artist as she stands motionless in the crowded streets of Lagos, Nigeria, Mexico City, Cairo, New York, Delhi, Tokyo, Shanghai, and London putting the viewer at the centre of a global space. The world weaves past the artist’s needle-like figure, acting as an instrument, a medium that establishes connections, relationships and experience, expands time and seeks universal truths. A Laundry Woman-Yamuna River, India, considers nature, stillness and movement and the cycle of life and death as the river slides by, picking up flotsam and washing away the earth. The works in the exhibition question our notion of the self and contemplate a universality that hints at a possible truth of existence.

Damien Hirst Pharmacy, 1992. Š Tate, London 2009

Damien Hirst Pharmacy 24 October 2009 - 7 February 2010 / Level 2

In conjunction with Tate Connects, an initiative established in 2008 to develop partnerships between Tate and other UK galleries, BALTIC presents Damien Hirst’s major 1992 work Pharmacy. Hirst’s wide-ranging practice challenges the boundaries between art, science and popular culture. His work poses fundamental questions and explores the basic foundations of human experience to expose the fragility of our existence. Hirst’s Pharmacy could be seen as an exploration of the wide range of philosophies, theories and belief systems available to influence and structure our lives. For Hirst, medicine, like art, provides a belief system which is both seductive and deceptive.

Exhibition supported by: Newcastle University’s Medical School - celebrating 175 years
