SPECIAL PERMISSION; We have special permission as a expedition, issued by The Marine Office to dive on prohibited wreck but till the end of January we need to send them all photocopy of passports, certifications and insurance to received named permission for every single diver (this may take up to 6 months – Polish bureaucracy) July in Poland is very nice weather temperature 25-35C water will be still cold but calm. Under thermocline is cold all year round 4-8C. Baltic has three level of salt water: layer of surface water 0-40m avr.7% salinity (ocean 35%), next level is halocline 40-80m 15-20% salinity and last level is almost as ocean 30% salinity. When planning weight, you can take max 1-2kg more in relation to the balance in inland waters (fresh). Visibility Visibility as the temperature is governed by its own laws. No one is able to clearly answer what visibility will be for example day. Sometimes conditions change very rapidly. In the winter until the beginning of June the visibility is the best; its range reaches up to 20-25m. Due to the color of the bottom of the greater likelihood of better visibility from the open sea than for 7

Darker bottom does not reflect light so that the visibility of these areas appears to be inferior. In the Gulf of Gdansk visibility often does not exceed 15m. Visibility also depends on the depth of diving, in the Gulf of Gdansk below 30m there is no sunlight for at diving below this depth requires the use of a flashlight diving. Wreck diving below 40m from the sea open often do not require to use of a flashlight. A museum under the sea Nowhere else in the world are there as many well preserved wooden wrecks as in the Baltic. So far, we know of about 20 000 remains of ships and smaller boats, but not all the wrecks have been discovered yet. Archaeologists believe there may be more than 100 000 of them! That makes the Baltic an underwater museum. Information about the wrecks found so far is available in the Fornsรถk database. Free from shipworms The reason the wrecks are so well preserved is that shipworms do not like the brackish waters of the Baltic. Shipworms are actually a type of small clam that lays its larvae in wood. In salt water, wrecks can disappear in a short time since the larvae eat the wood. In the Baltic, wrecks can look just as they did when they sank, even though several hundred years have passed. Baltic Sea is also less salty and low oxygen level which helps wrecks to stay longer in good condition.

Museum for divers Only divers can visit and look at the wrecks at the bottom of the Baltic, but the waters of the Baltic are relatively shallow, so recreational divers can reach many of them. If one hundred years have passed since the ship sank, the wreck is counted among permanent ancient remains and thus protected by the Cultural Heritage Act. That also means that unless you have obtained permission to do so, no one can touch, alter or damage it. Many interesting younger wrecks are also fragile, so divers need to be careful. Baltic Sea The Baltic Sea is famous for its wrecks, no matter how experienced or how many diving certificates you have; you will find many interesting sites to visit. There are popular among fresh water divers, lying next to the shore, on shallow waters wrecks like Grozny- anti- submarine vessel (15-20m depth), Solen (15m) Swedish XVII warship or Dolphin (21m) magnetic trawler. Even divers with OWD are able to choose among almost a hundred wrecks lying over 20m, some of them are even accessible from the beach (like Bryza, navy support vessel, on 18 meters, near Hel). This tragic heritage is now attracting scuba divers from all over the globe. It is no secret that Baltic Sea is considered to be the third best wreck diving site in the World. The amount of already found and marked on maps wrecks goes in hundreds of thousands, and underwater archaeologists think that it is just a small percentage of what could be found in those mysterious, green waters. More experienced, but still recreational divers, who can go down to 40 meters and have Wreck Diving certificate in theirs logbook (many diving centers won`t take you to any deeper wrecks, if you don`t have adequate certificates!) are allowed to choose more challenging diving sites. Breath taking wrecks like the Trawler (42m), Fu Shan Hai (30m) a Chinese bulk carrier, Steamer (39m) or XVIII century Sail Ship (38m), and hundreds of more just wait for daring divers. Real adventure waits for technical divers. On 72m, in dark green abyss and complete silence lies Franken, 179m long oil carrier, legend among Baltic divers, famous for astonishing and breathe taking impressions. Even the most experienced divers treat this place with respect and plan carefully their dive. When wreck diving in Baltic, you should know that Polish naval law does not allow divers to go into the wrecks ;-) you can just watch them from the outside. However, this is not strictly obeyed and many divers are more than willing to take the risk and visit dark and narrow corridors of sunken ships. If you decide to break the law and swim inside a wreck, remember that you need special training and equipment. Diving with ceiling overhead is always dangerous and demanding. Don`t get encouraged by small depths, technical wreck diving is a challenge for all experienced, properly equipped and certified technical divers, and it`s not an amusement for recreational divers. 8

You are not allowed to dive within a radius of 500m from some special wrecks: Goya (75m), Gustloff (47), Steuben (72m). They are considered war tombs and are closed for all divers. Coast guards are very strict in this matter. This three wrecks is one of the biggest war tragedy they took life of about 25 000 people.

..:: FAQ ::.. What about food and price in Poland? -on the boat we will have full board: breakfast (polish breakfasts are light) lunch and dinner, plus tea and coffee (included) -in hotel we will have breakfast (which is included) for diner we will go to restaurants (avr. price 50pln =10£) On last evening will have a goodbye party with traditional polish food and last day we will eat in old town Gdansk before transfer to airport. What about deposit? Deposit 100£ and I will buy a flight as soon as I find good deal and then you will pay me flight fare. Rest must be paid till 1 th of May. What we will do on the land? On Saturday evening we will moor by our Hotel and we`ll move all staff and we`ll store dive gear for drying, after that we`ll go out to the pub. Sunday we will sightseeing Gdansk and evening `Goodbye Party` in polish style. On Monday after check out we`ll visit Sea Museum http://www.en.cmm.pl/the-granaries and after that, dinner in Old Town and we will have transfer to airport. What will happen with our diving gear? I will drive van with trolley 2 days before rec trip (on 1st of July). I will collect equipment from London (on the way) and I will drop back just after I back from Poland. Box with gear and box with rebreather 60£. I can arrange to hire twins 2x12, stages 7 & 11 and weight. If you have more or not listed, please ask. What about gases? EAN to 36% - 2pln per one liter of cylinder capacity. EAN 50 - 3 pln per one liter of cylinder capacity. O2- 4pln per one liter of cylinder capacity. Hel- 0,20pln per liter of gas. What kind currency is in Poland? In Poland we are using Polish ZLOTY (means `gold`) average rate is 1 £ = 6 PLN, best option is to withdrawn from ATM but if you wish there will be many places to exchange. What kind of power socket? Poland has 230 V powers but with different socket, you will need adapter! What about transfer? In Poland I will arrange two buses for transfer and later for sightseeing tour. (not included) 9

Exemplary Flight London - Gdansk We will use cheap flight company: from London with Cheap Airlines about 2h and on way back Gdansk to London about (2h) because this is cheap flight company price for ticket are constantly in change but I will be controlling it and when it will be lowest I will buy for all of us. I expect it to be around 80 £ both ways with hand luggage only. I will need money and all personal details to precede online booking. What about decompression chamber? National Centre of Hyperbaric Medicine is in Gdynia (next to Gdansk) and can be reached in 30 minutes by air from farthest place of our trip. International diving insurance is necessary, DAN is recommended. Its sailing range is 20 nautical miles from the coast. It can take 12 Technical Divers and it is equipped with 10 beds, a toilet and a kitchen-annex. The bench height is adjusted first and foremost to the divers’ comfort. It is also equipped with a dive lift for picking divers, a comfortable entry ladder and hydraulic crane as well as a resuscitation board. The unit also has oxygen and first aid kit (DAN). This boat is most comfortable one for divers on Polish Baltic Sea. The captain has the biggest experience with divers and he is also CCR Diver. Boat offers exceptional comfort, good food and an unforgettable family atmosphere. There are comfortable 2 and 4 people’s cabins, Toilet, sun deck and a foredeck (in total for 16 divers + crew). Also has a cargo hold where they arranged compressed air supply system, gas storage and a workshop. There divers have air and nitrox 50%. Baltic Sea Diving Boat Operator FB: OstseeTauchen.BalticDiving 1. Abilla Depth above the wreck: 36m Depth at bottom: 47m, DESCRIPITON Wreck of a tugboat "Abille" with length overall 37m. Ship was built in 1936 in Leith, France - incarnated in 1940 to Kreigsmarine in Benodet. From information about the ships sinking we know that it happened during, helping another vessel which had problems at Hel's roadstead in winter 1945. DIVING DESCRIPITON Abille rests close to harbour of Hel. The wreck lies on its keel in one piece. It’s covered with sand at a small degree. Without any problems you can swim around it several times. One of the most characteristic elements of Abille was its big chimney, but because of the corrosion it felt over.

2. Akademik Karpinsky(*) Diving on the wreck requires special permission issued by the Maritime Authority. Depth above the wreck: 70m Depth at the bottom: 80m DESCRIPTION Built in 1936 by the company Nordseewerke in Emden under the name "Thalia", for the first three years he swam for the German owner - Dampfschifffahrts Gesellschaft Neptun, but after the outbreak of war to be embodied in the fleet of the Kriegsmarine. She interned in 1943. in Spanish Cadiz, and in May 1945. were the Allies. The wreck was discovered in 2012 by a group of divers Baltictech. DIVING DESCRIPTION The wreck lies on its keel. It is kept in very good condition. From the stern of the ship's name clearly marked. 3. Boelcke (*) Diving on the wreck requires special permission issued by the Maritime Authority. Depth above the wreck: 48m Depth at the bottom: 59m DESCRIPTION Military vessel used by Kriegsmarine. Vessel was used as a workshop for Luftwaffe seaplanes. Flugssicherungsschiff Boelcke was built in 1942 at Norderwerft Koser & Meyer Hamburg shipyard, with building number 745. From launch it served SNDF (ost). Sunken in 17/04/1945 during a bombing raid. 20 seaman’s died. Works on identification are still going on, although on this level of work we can prove that the wreck of Boelcke. 4. Bremenhaven (*) Diving on the wreck requires special permission issued by the Maritime Authority. Depth above the wreck: 60m Depth at the bottom: 66m DESCRIPTION The construction begin in 1921 at Workman, Clark & Co. shipyard in Belfast with its first name "Reventazon". Till 1936 it cruised under British flag, bought by Union GmbH, Brema. On 6 October 1936 taken over by the German Ministry of Labour to transport 1000 German's from Riga, Latvia. December 1939 returned to the owner. On the 15 May 1942 again over taken by Kreigsmarine for an Troop-ship cruising on Baltic Sea, it was famous from its nick name "ship of death" cause it was used as an crusing death camp. Around 1944 its used as a transporter for hurt soldiers. 30 October 1944 was destroyed by bombs from planes at that time 410 soldiers died. 5. Tms Franken (*) Depth above the wreck: 48m Depth at the bottom: 70m DESCRIPTION Motor tanker, which construction was started in 1937 in Wrek Kiel. Hull was launched 8 March 1937. On 1942 it was towed to Burmaisten and Wain shipyard, there finished and put into service on 17.03.1943. The ship was powered by four Diesel engines, 9 cylinder each. Equipped with blades with constant pitch. Operating range of this tanker ended on Baltic Sea, where it was used as a provider for armadillo Prinz Eugen and also for the torpedo and trawling vessels. It skunked on 8 April 1945 by Soviet air force. DIMENSIONS Length between perpendiculars Lpp 175,00 m Total length LC 179,00 m Breadth on midship 22m Draft 10,2 m aDisplacement 22850 t Crew 94-208 depending on character of the mission DIVING DESCRIPTION One of the most interesting wrecks situated to the east from Hel harbour. The wreck lays on its keel. Because of the explosions it was separated and its forecastle lays about 420m from the rest of the wreck. The most common places for diving are stern and superstructure. According to many divers stern is the most interesting although it's the deepest place on this wreck. Visiting the superstructure you will find the construction of the wreck already on about 47 m.

6. GRAF ZEPPELIN (*) Diving on the wreck requires special permission issued by the Maritime Authority. Depth above the wreck: 60m Depth at the bottom: 87m

The wreck was discovered by a Polish survey ship in July 2006. DESCRIPTION In November 1935 there was an order for the ship "A', later called "Graf Zeppelin" in the shipyard Deutsche Werke in Cologne. It was an aircraft carrier, built under the program "plan Z" (expansion of the surface fleet third Reich). Under this plan the construction of four ships was started, but only one was successfully finished. Flight deck was on the whole hull surface, while the superstructure with funnels on the right side of the ship. Inside there were two hangars with the same width 16m and 21 watertight. three lifts provided constant contact with steering board and hangars. The start-off the planes was possible because of the catapults. The aircraft carrier was speeded by 16 high-pressure boilers. There were four of them in each four boiler rooms. The steam was transported into turbine units, then into propellers. The power of the ship was 200000 Bhp and maximum speed 35 nodes. Graf Zeppelin was really good armored, ship's side had 100mm, hull 50mm and the flight deck had extra 30mm. In Szczecin most of the machines and armament was removed. Then on 24.04.1945 it was destroyed by field artillery, taken over by Russians and transported to Swinoujscie. In 1947 it was transported to Leningrad for research purposes. The aircraft carrier sunk on 17.08.1947 during towing on the Baltic Sea. 7. Pogłebiarka Depth above the wreck: 31m Depth at bottom: 41m DESCRIPTION So far the real name of the ship and the circumstances of the sinking are unknown. DIVING DESCRIPTION The wreck lies on the sand, on its right side, north from Jastarnia. No visible damage to the hull caused e.g. hit by torpedo or mine explosion. So far the real name of the ship and the circumstances of the sinking are not known .

8. Terra (*) Depth above the wreck: 35m Depth at bottom: 45m DESCRIPTION M/T TERRA ex. Gustav Schindler ex. Oelschindler. The ship was built in 1935 Nobiskrug shipyard in Rendsburg under construction 440. The owner of Hamburger Tankreederei GmbH, Hamburg. Mechanically driven oil tanker with 16 tanks without double bottom. He served in the Kriegsmarine in years: August 4, 1939 Tanker auxiliary naval shipyard in Kiel. August 21, 1939 in Gdynia Auxiliary Tanker Year 1941 as a tanker fleet for the 27 U-bots. 13.10. 1944 hit in the starboard side by two torpedoes from the Soviet submarine Lembit SS (S-4). DIMENSIONS Length between particulars 74,1 m, Breadth 11,3 m, Draft 6,4 m, Gross Tonnage 1533 BRT POWER Equipped with two rows combustion engines each with eight cylinders. The ship has two propellers with constant pitch. DIVING DESCRIPTION One of the most beautiful and picturesque wrecks that can be selected. It is situated perfectly on the keel. It's full of nooks and crannies that are visited by divers.

9. Trałowiec / MUNIN Depth above the wreck: 32m Depth at bottom: 41m DESCRIPTION Warship used by Reischmarine and Kreigsmarine, rebuilt from a fishing trawler. Ship ordered as S / F Ditmar Koel in the yard HC Stulcken Sohn in Hamburg, build number 491 by Hans HF. Seized by the Kaiserliche Marine December 8, 1915. Launched 03/22/1916. He served under many names. Among other things, Munin on September 8th 1937 ending Vs 304 from 1 October 1943. The ship was modernized several times. It sank after a collision March 18th 1945. DIVING DESCRIPTION The wreck lies close to the port of Hel, at a depth of 42m. Very often marked with a buoy rope that leads to the bow of the wreck divers. Munin because it is now so called, lies on its keel with a slight tilt to the left side. The wreck is pretty much covered with

Before the main gun there are remnants of trawl bows, which is a fundamental part of the well-preserved and mounted on the bow of the ship. Inside the superstructure there is a steering wheel.

10. Trałowiec V 315 (*) Depth above the wreck: 47m Depth at the bottom: 62m DESCRIPTION BRIS or PT 25 Unit Navy during the Second World War. Built in Norderwerft Koser & Meyer Hamburg, build number 746 14.06.1941 Launching a Soviet trawler for S / F BRIS. 1941 taken over by the Navy. March 12 1945roku sank after colliding with S / S Hendrik Fisser 7 ::: DIVING DESCRIPTION The wreck lies on the keel, very well maintained, well-preserved in the superstructure steering wheel and column recently, compass and telegraph. Summer of 2012, was stolen by a group of divers. In the bow high has followed closely by antiaircraft gun. V315 is one of the most beautiful diving wrecks in our Baltic area.
