How did we decide who and what to include in this year’s LGBT Visitors Guide? We started with the LGBT-owned and staffed establishments that have long been a part of our community. We then talked to our colleagues, co-workers, friends, and families to find out about the places they patronize and recommend. Finally, we collected information from the local businesses who contacted us: the hotel manager who wants the community to know she supports LGBT visitors; the restaurant owner whose establishment hosted marriage equality fundraisers; the entrepreneur who knows his products will resonate with the community. Rather than a simple listing of places that will merely accept any LGBT dollar, we strived to create a guide full of active, supportive, and engaged businesses, people, and resources so that your visit to Baltimore will be welcoming. the glccb baltimore’s lgbt community center In 1977—less than ten years after the Stonewall riots in New York—Baltimore’s LGBT community center was founded. At the time, Baltimore was by no means a stranger to LGBT activism. During the late ‘60s and early ‘70s a number of lesbian journals began publication in Baltimore. In 1972, the Baltimore Chapter of the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) was established. There were also groups for AfricanAmerican lesbians and, in 1973, gay and lesbian Catholics. Gay student groups at local universities and the Baltimore Pride rally both appeared in 1975. That spring, the Baltimore Gay Alliance (BGA) had its first meeting. The BGA began its work galvanizing the community into one entity, celebrating diversity and offering sanctuary. By 1977, it was clear that the BGA needed to form a unified community center, and the articles of incorporation were signed on March 28, 1977 establishing the Gay Community Center of Baltimore (GCCB). In 1980 however, the GCCB found a home at 241 West Chase Street, where it remained until 2013.

In 2002—in an effort to remain inclusive—the GLCCB incorporated the entire community it serves into its name to become the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center of Baltimore and Central Maryland (GLBTCCBCM) while retaining the familiar (and more manageable) nickname of “The GLCCB.” In January 2014, the community center moved two blocks to the Waxter Center at 1000 Cathedral Street. Things have changed markedly from the days when the GLCCB operated out of basements, fought for its right to hold the Pride Celebration, or watched gay rights bill after gay rights bill get voted down by the Baltimore City Council. With ever-increasing acceptance, things may appear to be less challenging now, but there is still much work to be done. There will always be challenges, both personal and societal. Through individual gifts, generous bequests, fundraisers, and grants, the GLCCB has been able to continue the good fight by expanding its services to include more support groups, increased educational opportunities, and more community outreach services. How do you identify? Straight, and LGBT adjacent; meaning, I stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT community in the fight for justice and equality. When LGBT friends come to Baltimore, I take them to: Gay, straight, or otherwise, I encourage visitors to enjoy the many historical and cultural tourism opportunities we are blessed to have here in Baltimore. This year, as we celebrate the writing of the Star Spangled Banner, I encourage every proud American to visit Fort McHenry—where the inspiration of the Battle of Baltimore prompted Francis Scott Key to pen our national anthem. But, if someone is looking for some LGBT-friendly fun, I would say, don’t miss Gay Bingo on Wednesday nights at the Hippo. I’m having my birthday party there again this year. (Note to bartender: please have my French Martini ready.) Also, be sure to visit Waterstone Bar and Grill, City Cafe, and Spirits of Mt. Washington. They are a few of my favorites.

When LGBT friends come to Baltimore, I take them to: Before we begin our adventures, I would let my friends know that they are in a very gay-friendly city. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is a true and sincere ally to our community. Baltimore City is a very diverse and vivacious city. My friends are the same. Therefore, I would take them all over town. We’d start off by walking around Druid Hill or Patterson Park, and then head over to the Avenue in Hampden or check out a movie at the Landmark Theater in Harbor East. Later, we’d people watch at the Inner Harbor and grab some delicious Latin food on Broadway in Upper Fells Point or swing over to Lexington Market for some good ole’ soul food. The evening would not be complete without some dancing and Karaoke (or what I like to call, ‘Scary-oke’) in Mt. Vernon. Grand Central, The Drinkery, Leons, and Club Hippo are great places to meet some really cool people.

neighborhoods mount vernon Mount Vernon is beautiful, colorful, lively and like no other neighborhood in Baltimore. Mount Vernon historically has also been the center of gay life and gay celebration in Baltimore, and, in many ways, it still retains that role. Mount Vernon hosts the annual Pride Parade and Block Party for Baltimore in June, and the city’s best gay and lesbian clubs are along Historic Charles Street in the heart of the neighborhood. The LGBT community is strongly represented in the residents, business owners, and community leaders. Mount Vernon is filled with 19th-century mansions, charming workers cottages, and the city’s best entertainment, culture, and restaurants. From cafes to fine dining, from Afghan to Thai, and everything in between, it is all in Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon is also home to The Walters Art Museum, Center Stage, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Modell Center for the Performing Arts, The Lyric, the Maryland Historical Society, the George Peabody Library, and the Enoch Pratt Free Library. It’s easy to spend a day or an entire weekend in Mount Vernon trying to take in everything this gorgeous community has to offer. Mount Vernon also has many lodging options, of all which are gay-friendly. Pick up a colorful Mount Vernon Visitor’s Map at any of the cultural institutions, restaurants, and shops, and take the fascinating walking tour on the back for a quick introduction to the neighborhood. station north Baltimore’s Station North Arts and Entertainment District, more commonly called “Station North,” sits in the center of the City, near Penn Station (Amtrak and MARC) and historic Mount Vernon. The first Baltimore neighborhood to be designated an Arts and Entertainment District, Station North is filled with an eclectic mix of people, architecture, arts, food, and fun. Theaters, cafés, galleries, music venues, restaurants, and bars fill this residential and commercial area. Former industrial buildings have evolved into attractive artist studios and residential lofts. New, modern units have been constructed, though beautiful, three-story, early 20th-century row homes provide most of the Station North housing.

With creative types in abundance, entertainment is vital in Station North. Venues feature jazz, improvisational music and performance, dance parties, comedy, and film screenings. The neighborhood hosts the Station North Flea Market the first Saturday of each month featuring artists’ work. The community also celebrates the last Friday of every month with Final Fridays in which spaces in Station North are transformed into spectacular celebratory environments filled with musicians, performance artists, art installations, and food for all to enjoy.

federal hill Baltimore’s historic Federal Hill neighborhood lies just south of the famed Inner Harbor. Known for its picturesque park—an oasis, with incredible day and night views of the Baltimore Harbor and skyline—Federal Hill enjoys a storied history. The hill was given its name in 1788 after thousands paraded there celebrating ratification of the new “Federal” U. S. Constitution. Having been used as a key “look-out” destination during the Civil War, Federal Hill maintains a large U.S. flag, cannons, and a monument honoring its history. Young professionals, affluent empty-nesters, and families who have lived in row-homes in the neighborhood for generations call Federal Hill home today. Pubs, restaurants, galleries and antique shops line the streets, where you can also find salons, boutiques, and the Cross Street Market—a 19th-century marketplace that continues to serve as the neighborhood commercial and social hub. The walkable neighborhood is close to Baltimore’s professional sports stadiums—Oriole Park at Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium allowing many to patronize Federal Hill pubs and restaurants before and after games. Also, the full-service Horseshoe Casino, slated to open this year, will be adjacent to the Camden Yards sports complex. The Charm City Circulator makes it convenient to get to and from Federal Hill for free.

harbor east Baltimore’s swanky Harbor East neighborhood is barely recognizable to those who knew it in the not too distant past. Filled with hotels, restaurants, shops, offices, condominiums and entertainment venues—all connected via wide sidewalks and open spaces leading to the renowned waterfront—Harbor East thrives, but with a much different vibe. Dilapidated warehouses from the Industrial Boom of the early 1900s cluttered the area until a major transformation got underway at the end of the century. Now, about the only thing stored in bulk in Harbor East is wine within trendy restaurants.

Harbor East shines as an outstanding example of history and culture with business, recreation and fun. There’s something for everyone in this rapidly growing area between Fell’s Point and Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Joggers share the sidewalks with bikers and leisurely strollers window shopping the upscale boutiques. Harbor East has also evolved into a restaurant lover’s paradise.

fell’s point Fell’s Point is a historic waterfront community just one mile east—a 15-minute walk, 10-minute water taxi ride, or 5-minute cab ride of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Established during the colonial era, Fell’s Point is a neighborhood rich in history, attractions, and colorful people. Known to many visitors as a wonderful place to eat, shop, and play, its diverse residents enjoy a very livable community where individuality is welcome. Fell’s Point is a mixed-use neighborhood, with many services and shopping opportunities within easy walking distance of the city. This neighborhood has a lot of character and options for all. Events vary throughout the year: you can watch Santa come in on a tug boat in December; shop local at the Farmers’ Market; or attend Fell’s Point Main Street’s Privateer festival. Come and make your own history.

Morgan State University
Hamilton-Lauraville is a neighborhood that enjoys its parks and open spaces. The Herring Run meanders through Morgan State University and the neighborhood’s many large homes nestled among mature trees. This area offers a variety of outdoor experiences such as hiking, cycling, and sports. Montebello Lake is a 1.37 mile loop that attracts runners, walkers, cyclists, and pet lovers for a little exercise around a beautiful lake setting. The neighborhood also has a strong and growing commercial district comprised of many business owners that live in the neighborhood. In addition to the many great restaurants and pubs, the Green Onion Market, a fresh locally-owned market, will open this spring. From June through October, Lauraville hosts The Tuesday Market at 4500 Harford Road, Tuesday evenings 4-8pm. This is a small community market with fresh farm produce, fruit, meats, cheese, bread and more. Prepared foods are available for commuters and community members to take home, or visitors can stick around and enjoy a meal, a little music, and artisan wares. 42

hampden Traditionally a blue collar community, Baltimore’s Hampden neighborhood has morphed into eclectic at its very best. Located just minutes from the Inner Harbor, young urban professionals now call the brick rowhouses and luxury condos home, but the “Bawlmer Hons” remain. Hampden celebrates its quirkiness, and people from all over come to join in the fun. In fact, one of the city’s most popular events is Honfest, named for the local term of endearment “Hon,” short for “Honey.” Honfest features the enormous beehive hairdos, cat eyeglasses, leopard print attire and language—“Balwmerese”—indigenous to this area. The neighborhood started in 1802 for workers in the new flour and cotton mills. While Hampden maintains a modest, small town atmosphere with its original structures and businesses that have been around for a long time, former factories are now artist studios, offices, wine bars and new restaurants and boutiques intertwined with new mixed-use development. Hampden’s combination of old and new, with its central location, makes it one of Baltimore’s most distinctive and desirable areas.

canton Just east of Fell’s Point lies Canton, a charming blue-collar neighborhood settled in the late 19th- century by Polish immigrants flocking to work at the local canneries. What were once factories are now condominiums, artists’ studios, offices, restaurants and stores. A quaint and lively village square rimmed with eclectic restaurants, pubs and shops along O’Donnell Street is the heart of this waterfront neighborhood, but wander off Canton Square to the surrounding blocks and find the heart of Baltimore, from the nearly-lost Baltimore art form of the painted screen to window shrines and rows of classic marble stoops on block after block of traditional Baltimore brick and formstone row houses. Canton is also buffered by the lush urban green space of Patterson Park, once the country’s largest urban park, and the expansive Canton Waterfront Park.

When LGBT friends come to Baltimore, I take them to: Hotel: Historic Lord Baltimore Hotel & the French Kitchen Restaurant, of course! Entertainment: The 13th floor at the Belvedere. Good food, live music, and great views. If you’re looking for a good mixologist, head to Tavern on the Hill in Mt Vernon. If you’re ready to relax, check out Jay’s On Read,the fantastic piano bar. Fun and Laughter: Ripley’s Believe it or Not. Way more fun than I thought it would be!
When LGBT friends come to Baltimore, I take them to: One of my favorite things about Baltimore is that the whole city is pretty darn LGBT-friendly. I’d start by taking my friends to Hampden—a great neighborhood full of fun shops (including my store, Sugar) and fabulous restaurants like The Food Market and Grano’s Pasta Bar, and The Charmery (for their handmade ice cream). I’d also take them to the American Visionary Art Museum (how can you go wrong with a two story tall sculpture of Divine?) and end the evening with a Kitty Club show. The Kitty Club is a collectively run cabaret that celebrates creative expression among lesbian, dyke, bisexual, transgender, transsexual and genderqueer individuals—so sexy and fun! Last, but certainly not least, if it’s football season, we’re going to catch a Ravens game!

We may go on a thrift store scavenger hunt at one of Baltimore’s many second hand/vintage stores. If it’s a nice day we can sit on top of Federal Hill and hit up the American Visionary Art Museum. And or if they like to go dancing like I do we can shake our booty’s at The Hippo and Grand Central Station.

When LGBT friends come to Baltimore, I take them to: First and foremost, you have to have one of the best crab cakes in Baltimore. We’d take a walk from our home in Hamilton down to Koco’s Pub for hospitality and the best crab cake I’ve ever eaten. From there we might head over to Charles Village, grab a coffee, and walk around the beautiful campus of Johns Hopkins, or head down to the harbor and see the sights, especially the National Aquarium. On a nice day it’s just fun to people watch and get some exercise! For dinner, we could make our way back up Charles Street and head to Mt. Vernon Stable before a night out at Club Hippo for dancing and fun. No matter what, if you’re in Baltimore and crabs are in season, you HAVE to have some! Same Gender Loving When LGBT friends come to Baltimore, I take them to: For nighttime fun, I take friends to Paradox, Ziascoz, the Hippo and Club Bunns. During the daytime, a tour of the Inner Harbor, the Mt. Vernon neighborhood, and Charles Village. Living in Mt. Vernon, I would suggest visitors head over to City Cafe and Mt. Vernon Stable for great dining in an LGBT friendly environment and also make sure to stop by Spirits of Mt. Vernon for a great selection of American, European, and New World wines. You can also find me having lunch at Nancy’s by Station North owned by Downtown Kevin Brown and his partner William Maugahlin. Great place to have lunch and enjoy great art by MICA students.

How do you identify? “That cupcake guy” and proud member of the gay community. When LGBT friends come to Baltimore: Food is my passion and I always encourage random trips to try hole-in-the-wall restaurants, bars, and tasty treats. I’d take friends down a street I’ve never been on and grab a bite. No other city has the personality of Baltimore (a good thing, I promise!) and it comes through in the food. And, of course, we would finish our tour with a cupcake, pastry, or savory from my bakery, La Cakerie! For night life and fun, I love outings in Canton or Fells Point, bar hopping until the sun comes up. Find a local diner, chow down and pass out in good company. You can’t go out in this town without making a few new friends every time!
When LGBT friends come to Baltimore, I take them to: A day of sightseeing to all of Baltimore’s historical landmarks. It’s great to take in our city’s rich history in Federal Hill while enjoying views of the Inner Harbor. Next, we extend our journey with a visit to the National Aquarium and be enchanted by its beauty. The day trip could not complete without a visit to PNC Bank’s Living Wall on Pratt Street—an 84 x 24 foot structure made up of year-round living plants. For dinner, Tio Pepe’s has extraordinary cuisine and some of the best sangria in the city. I’d top off our day by checking out the nightlife at The Hippo and Grand Central for some dancing and irresistible mixed drinks. Depending on the season, we may even go see an Orioles game or the 2013 Super Bowl World Champion, the Baltimore Ravens. Go Ravens!

When LGBT friends come to Baltimore, I take them to: My favorite places in the city typically involve the outdoors: The Inner Harbor, Federal Hill, Druid Hill Lake, or WTMD’s First Thursday concerts at the Monument in Mt. Vernon. But my favorite way to experience the city is a bike ride starting in my neighborhood of Charles Village. In the warmer months it’s to die for! Plenty of beautiful multicolored row homes, a stop by Sherwood Gardens, a hidden gem a stone’s throw from JHU, followed by a jaunt up to the Avenue in Hampden; the perfect place to unwind. Ample food, shopping, drinks and my favorite thrift store Mecca - Avenue Antiques, where I can and have spent hours perusing knick-knacks, clothes, and old city maps. The evening is best topped off with a scoop of homemade “Baltimore” flavored ice cream from The Charmery, like Berger Cookie or Old Bay Caramel.
