JONATHAN OGDEN: THE GOLDEN STANDARD After 25 Years, the Legacy of the Ravens’ First-Ever Draft Choice Still Shines Brightly

Jonathan Ogden is a pillar of the Baltimore Ravens’ franchise. A master technician, the 6-9, 345-pound mountain of a man combined superior athletic ability, tremendous footwork, outstanding knowledge of the game and a fierce competitive zeal to become the most dominant offensive tackle of his era.

A nine-time All-Pro who also earned 11-consecutive trips to the Pro Bowl, Ogden set not only a new benchmark for offensive line play, but more importantly, an expectation of what it means to “Play Like a Raven.”

Toughness. Accountability. Commitment. Strength. Smarts. Discipline. Desire.

These are the qualities for which Ogden was known. And 25 years after he first strapped on his pads in Charm City, they remain the standards to which every Raven is held.

“In my 40 years as a player, coach and evaluator, no one played his position better than Jonathan,” stated executive vice president Ozzie Newsome, who tabbed “J.O.” with the Ravens’ first-ever draft choice in their inaugural 1996 season. “When

BY PATRICK GLEASON you start a franchise, your foundation better be sturdy. Jonathan certainly was a key to our first steps. He’s a rock that we built on.”

If asked to describe Ogden’s career by using one color, fittingly, most people would choose purple, which “J.O.” donned each week during his 12 NFL seasons. But perhaps a more accurate choice would be gold – as in the jacket he received upon entering the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a first-ballot selection in 2013.

“When people ask me about my career, I’ll tell them about how I played with a Hall of Fame left tackle,” recalled Ray Lewis, the franchise’s second-ever draft pick, who produced a “golden” standard of his own. “We all touched glory with him as a teammate, and he helped us touch glory with the [2000] Super Bowl.”

Continued Lewis: “Oh my, those skills he had, those long arms on that huge frame, the fastest feet – a lot of times he was faster than our running backs. He is a oncein-a-lifetime player, but he’s also a humble man willing to help others. If they made a movie about him, there would be no one to play him. There’s only one ‘J.O.’”

Indeed, there truly is only one “J.O.” – a guiding force who, from Day One, helped chart the course for what has become one of the most successful and respected franchises in pro sports.

As owner Steve Bisciotti succinctly stated: “Jonathan represents the best of the Ravens, the best of Baltimore and the best in the NFL.”
