panthers Ravens game preview
quoth the raven
“One of the things we’ve always talked about throughout Lamar’s career is, ‘Don’t be afraid to let people know how important this thing is to you. … It’s OK for people to know how excited you were by a great block someone made or a great play you made. It’s OK for people to understand and know how much you wanted to make that throw, and doggone it, you didn’t.’ I love it. I think the guys feed off it. He’s an energy giver, and it shows [with] the way he plays.”
Riding a three-game winning streak, the Ravens (6-3) host the Carolina Panthers (3-7) for an interconference battle at M&T Bank Stadium. Coming off a Week 10 bye, the Ravens have won four of their past five games and will play their fifth home game of the season (2-2 record thus far).
Baltimore sits atop the AFC North standings, while the 5-4 Bengals are one game behind in second. Carolina, which is coming off a 25-15 Week 10 win vs. Atlanta, is tied with the Saints for third in the AFC South but does hold a head-to-head tiebreaker at this point.
The Ravens are 2-4 vs. Carolina in the all-time series, including a 1-1 mark in Baltimore. Under head coach John Harbaugh, Baltimore is 2-1 against the Panthers, last winning a 38-10 contest at M&T Bank Stadium in 2014 (the last time the two teams played in Charm City).
Baltimore is 14-1 vs. the NFC in games started by QB Lamar Jackson. With Coach Harbaugh at the helm (since 2008), the Ravens are 22-7 at home vs. the NFC.
Behind a suffocating defense that allowed just 243 yards (including 48 rushing), the Ravens upended the host Saints, 27-13, in a Week 9 Monday Night Football performance. Baltimore racked up 188 rushing yards of its own, surpassing the 150 mark for the eighthconsecutive game. RB Kenyan Drake led the charge with 93 rushing yards and 2 TDs, while Jackson added 82 on 11 attempts (7.5 avg.), also completing 12-of-22 passes for 133 yards and 1 TD (24 yards to TE Isaiah Likely). numbers to note
.786
– Under head coach John Harbaugh (since 2008), Baltimore is 11-3 in games immediately following a bye. This .786 winning percentage ties Indianapolis for the NFL’s second-best such mark during this span.
.692 – Since their 1996 inception, the Ravens are 18-8 in games immediately following a bye, ranking as the league’s secondbest record (.692). Philly (.704) is first at 19-8.
26.6 – Points per game the Ravens have scored in games right after the bye since 2008 (Coach Harbaugh Era), good for fourth in the league. During the same span, the team has allowed 17.4 ppg (second in NFL).
168.1
– Baltimore boasts the No. 2 rushing attack, entering Week 11. Through nine contests, the Ravens are averaging 168.1 ground yards per game and 5.52 yards per carry, which also ranks No. 2 in the NFL.
Justin Houston tallied 2.5 sacks and 1 INT, earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors, while CB Marlon Humphrey registered a team-high 7 tackles, 1 PD and 1 sack. Baltimore limited the Saints to 3-of-11 on third down and 0-for-2 in the red zone.
on the ravens’ defensive progression:
“We have a plan, in terms of how we envision our defense and how we have to play in our conference and division. That’s been in place. In the offseason you build that, and you try to build your defense in that way towards scheme and then personnel. We didn’t have all of our guys early, but we were still building into our vision. I like to think that will start coming into clear view in this next part of the season, [with] how we want to play with the guys we have and the guys coming back and as we get better at what we do.”

beyond his excellence
By Emma LevineOn the world’s largest stage in Super Bowl XLVII, rookie kicker Justin Tucker waited patiently during a seemingly endless television timeout to tee up the ball for a kickoff while casually watching the Superdome jumbotron.
As play was almost set to resume, Tucker ran over to the sideline to speak with thenkicking consultant – and current Ravens special teams coach – Randy Brown.
Moments later, special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg raced down the sideline to ask Brown what Tucker needed, equally as anxious for the answer.
“He’s just ticked off he wasn’t in the video,” Brown responded with a laugh.
Tucker would later hit two fourth-quarter field goals to help secure Baltimore’s 34-31 Super Bowl victory, previewing what was to come over the next decade as he has worked to cement himself as the best kicker in NFL history.
Tucker is beloved by Ravens fans for many reasons, including his larger-than-life personality and his historically-clutch performances. According to coaches and teammates, his goofy, light-hearted side might actually be one of the keys to what makes him so great.
Ravens head coach John Harbaugh also raved about what Tucker, the most accurate kicker in NFL history, routinely brings to the team after the Ravens signed Tucker to a four-year contract extension last summer.
“Justin is beyond what kind of a kicker he is,” Harbaugh noted. “The kind of leader he is, the guy he is to be around, being out here with the mindset that he takes to [everything] – in terms of his work ethic and his sense of humor –[it’s] his understanding of the moment.”
Of course, just being a friendly face may not be enough to win over the hearts of a locker room and an entire city. Tucker has been able to match his jokes and wittiness with on-field performances never seen before, lifting his team to thrilling victory an exceptional number of times.
Brown, fearing something was terribly wrong, cautiously asked Tucker what the issue was.
“Did you just see that video?” Tucker asked.
“Yes, it was the All-Rookie team,” Brown replied.
“How am I not on the All-Rookie team?” Tucker quipped before jogging back onto the field to boom a touchback.
Brown, who has worked with Tucker since his 2012 rookie season, conceded that No. 9’s ability to crack a joke and cause a smile is incredibly important in a profession where excellence is expected and hard to achieve consistently.
“He has that ability to loosen up a situation,” Brown stated. “What Justin does for the players is he tries to keep things light, whether he’s cracking a joke, doing an imitation or making fun of himself. I think that helps him, because it takes the pressure off him.”
Tucker and those around him credit his success to a tireless work ethic and firmness of purpose, including the fact that he continues to seek out advice on how to improve at his craft. Brown called him one of the most determined athletes he has even been around, but also someone who is humble and openminded enough to continuously tweak his approach.
“Any athlete that wants to continue to improve doesn’t just shut it down,” Brown remarked. “Those are the qualities that make him elite.”
As Tucker pushes forward in his career, teammates and Ravens fans alike will continue to be thankful that he is in
“Justin is beyond what kind of kicker he is.”
– John HarbaughBaltimore, always ready to deliver when his number is called.
For Tucker himself, he is just thankful to be in a place that has allowed him to truly be himself and surrounded him with those who share in his goal of chasing perfection on every kick.
“What matters in those 1.3 seconds between the snap, the hold and the kick are the things that are going to help the kick go through the uprights,” Tucker said after he hit his 19th-career game-winning field goal to beat the Bengals on Sunday Night Football in Week 5. “So, my feelings, my emotions, for 1.3 seconds, they don’t really matter. That’s partly why I always make it a point to say a brief prayer as I’m lining up the kick, to show gratitude just for being able to be in that moment and bringing joy to millions of fans who love watching the Ravens win football games.”

Salute to service
To celebrate the NFL’s Salute to Service (STS) Initiative, the Ravens host various events and programs to honor veterans, military members and their families.
On October 22, the Ravens hosted the annual Youth Football and Military Combine. Over 150 pre-registered youth participants competed in the clinic that was created to teach football drills with a military twist. The combine, which coincided with the team’s Super Bowl XLVII 10-year reunion, featured Ravens legends, cheerleaders and mascot Edgar.
Earlier this year, the Ravens hosted the inaugural Flags with the Flock event. Head coach John Harbaugh and Ravens players teamed up with Flags of Valor and the Tragedy Assistance
Program for Survivors (TAPS) to recognize five families at the Under Armour Performance Center. Each family created a personalized wooden American Flag and received a custom Ravens jersey honoring their fallen service member.
The team nominated Ravens Legend Jarret Johnson for the NFL’s Salute to Service Award. Since retirement, Johnson began sponsoring SOF Missions, a nonprofit that provides care to veterans with PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury, and regularly provides leadership development to the Army’s 7th Special Forces Group. Johnson also started a Black Rifle Coffee franchise, which employs veterans, service members and their families.
