TEAMCASTROL PODIUMS IN OVAL ESERIES THRILLER

TeamCastrol’s Cameron Waters has pulled off another remarkable performance to finish on the podium during the latest BP Supercars All Stars Eseries round. The series contested the Charlotte Motor Speedway and the road course of Daytona International Speedway. Waters is right in the hunt for the inaugural championship, sitting third after seven events. The Mildura local enjoyed a fiercely competitive race in the first oval adventure of the Eseries, which produced close racing with a Caution thrown in the late stages of the 35-lap event. It was a tight group of cars at the front with Waters and his Tickford Racing team-mates Jack Le Brocq and Lee Holdsworth all involved and vying for the win. As typical in this style of racing Le Brocq and Holdsworth tangled with another car taking them out of contention with just a handful of laps to go. Waters held steady and tried to side draft Red Bull Holden Racing Team’s Shane van Gisbergen to the line – the pair finished just 0.017’s of each other as the Holden driver took top honours.

Meanwhile the rest of the #6 Mustang drivers’ evening did not go to plan. A penalty in the second race snowballed to a lower starting position for the final event at Daytona. Waters’ Florida efforts ultimately resulted in a 25th and 20th. “The oval race was a lot of fun, but that was really all the good from tonight. It was cool battling side-by-side with the other cars, and even with my teammates, we had a great strategy and fought hard, even with a Safety Car and other guys wrecking I almost pulled off the win,” said Waters. “In race two (of the night, Race 22) I copped a 45-second penalty for not yielding quickly enough and that put me a lap down, then race three (Race 23) I got fired into the wall at 270 kays an hour and had to pit for damage. Bad end to the night but it is what it is, and we’ll move on.” While Le Brocq ended up in the fence at Charlotte, he showed some serious speed from the outset, qualifying in third. He backed up that form with a pair of top ten finishes in Daytona. “Good run for us tonight. Was pretty stoked to qualify P3 for the oval race but shattered to be fenced at the end, we were on for a good one,” said Le Brocq. “The last two races were strong, I had good speed and finished in the ten which

was good for points, we’ll try to keep it up next week.” Castrol Racing driver Rick Kelly hadn’t been able to dedicate his week to practicing for the night’s event, with the majority of his focus on preparing the ‘sim chassis #002’. Debuting with much fanfare yesterday, Kelly’s simulator resembles his real Castrol Mustang and he’s upgraded to a real race seat, with the camping chair sidelined. Even without the hours of practice, Kelly’s form on oval racing was on show scoring his best qualifying result to date in the Eseries. A 15th spot for the novice in Charlotte was then converted to 12th in the race. “We got pretty lucky in qualifying at Charlotte and I was able to get behind another car and put in a top-15 lap on one of my first laps which was good, I wasn’t able to improve on it but it was enough to take my best qualifying result of the Eseries so far, then we kept out of trouble to finish P12, so maybe we should do more oval track racing,” said Kelly. Next Wednesday (May 27) sees the Eseries tackling Imola in Italy and Interlagos in Brazil.

TEAMCASTROL’S RENAULT CLAIMS WIN IN THE F1 VIRTUAL GRAND PRIX

The Renault DP World F1 Team have enjoyed a successful run in the F1 Virtual Grand Prix series. Two of the Renault Sport Academy drivers in Christian Lundgaard and Guanyu Zhou have had podium appearances, while Zhou scored the maiden win in the series. TeamCastrol’s Supercars driver Andre Heimgartner even made his Virtual Grand Prix debut with the team as a guest star on their rotating line up of drivers. The Chinese Formula 2 driver joined the team for the first Virtual Grand Prix, staged on the Codemasters F1 2019 game at the Bahrain International Circuit. Qualifying in third Zhou battled through the race with DTM driver Phillipp Eng and Formula E star and simulator ace Stoffel Vandoorne. Zhou came out on top, claiming honours in the inaugural event. In the following race Renault fielded a dual attack on what was slated as the ‘Vietnam Grand Prix with Lundgaard and Heimgartner. However due to the track being unavailable in the 2019 game, the series used the Albert Park circuit as a replacement.

Heimgartner qualified in 15th, a slim margin behind 2009 F1 world champion Jenson Button. The Kiwi then went on to enjoy a couple of intense battles with Button and current Williams F1 driver Nicholas Latifi. “What an awesome experience, even though the race didn’t go to plan. I had really good, on-track battles with some F1 drivers, which was enjoyable,” said Heimgartner. “I can now say I’ve been taken out by Jenson Button and I went wheel to wheel with some great racers. All in all a great experience, so thanks to Renault DP World F1 Team and Castrol for making it happen.” Lundgaard meanwhile had taken a brilliant pole position but was struck with a five-place grid penalty due to a collision in qualifying which he could not avoid. The Formula 2 driver went on to fight with two current F1 drivers in Charles Leclerc and George Russell and Formula 4 driver and brother of the Ferrari ace Arthur Leclerc. The Danish driver finished in a strong second. The following Chinese Grand Prix saw Zhou back in the simulator for his

‘home’ race. The rapid UNI-Virtuosi driver made it three podiums on the trot for Renault. A penalty for Vandoorne in the Mercedes meant that Zhou didn’t have to risk a move on the Belgian driver and expertly held off Russell to score a home podium. Renault has had two top tens in the remaining races with an incredible recovery drive from Lundgaard at the Virtual Dutch Grand Prix and a stunning debut from Max Fewtrell in the Spanish Grand Prix. The next virtual event for Formula 1 will be the Monaco Grand Prix (Sunday May 24th), given the tight nature of the track, there might just be a few wild moments on the cards.

RICK KELLY’S BARN BUILT SIMULATOR When the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries was announced Castrol Racing driver Rick Kelly didn’t have a home simulator, he’d never used iRacing and he didn’t have a gaming system. In the height of quarantine, with his son Lex in tow, Kelly set about building his own simulator setup. He pulled up an old camping chair and got stuck into building a wooden frame for his simulator. Kelly put a couple of test laps in on his new rig and sent it into the first round of the Eseries. From then on, Kelly seemingly had a raft of updates he applied to the sim setup. He replaced the tiny

screen with three giant televisions, pulling down wooden frames in his shed to build the stands for them. He upgraded his steering and peddle setups and has given the camping chair the kick. Kelly has made a brand new frame with added stability and some awesome Castrol flair. While the senior Kelly has been putting together his simulator, Lex has been just as keen to get in on the fun. This ultimately resulted in Dad building Lex his very own simulator with his own camping chair. Kelly Racing have been following the build process with a video series detailing exactly Kelly has been up to.

#TEAMCASTROL PROFILE: CAMERON WATERS

Cameron Waters is a young rising star in the Supercars Championship and in his fifth year with Tickford Racing. Waters, who is 25 years old, has proved he is a champion in the making after taking to the top step of the podium at the Sandown 500 in 2017. During his debut season in the main game in 2016, Waters earnt himself the Mike Kable YoungGun Award for his standout performance which he scored after taking an empathic pole position in Perth, two fourth place finishes at the Adelaide 500 and then another at the Bathurst 1000.

The Victorian was just 17 yearsof-age when he debuted at Bathurst, becoming the youngest ever driver to start the Bathurst 1000. He made history as well that year when he became the youngest Australian Formula Ford champion. Waters was able to skyrocket through the junior tiers, with a single season in Super2 before being called up as Jack Perkins’ co-driver at Tickford Racing during their endurance campaign in 2014. The next year, Waters filled in for his then team-mate Chaz Mostert for the final races, who was sidelined due to a horrific accident at Bathurst.

Tickford Racing signed Waters as a full-time driver for the 2016 season, and have supported the young charger ever since Waters pilots the #6 Castrol EDGE-oiled Tickford Racing Ford Mustang.
