HALF CENTURY MORE Luxury Retirement Interiors in Japan
H C M P RO J E C T S
FO REWOR D LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT MY FIRST TRIP TO TOKYO IN 1993, TO MEET TOMIO KANAZAWA, WOULD BE THE BEGINNING OF AN INSPIRING, 22-YEAR JOURNEY. Since the completion, in 1996, of our first project for “Mr. K” and his company, Half Century More, my BAMO teams and I have gone on to design interiors for a dozen more retirement communities, nine of which are featured in these pages. Our relationship with Mr. K was always a creative partnership. He challenged us to push boundaries and find innovative, compassionate solutions that put the residents’ well-being first. What was excellent and right took precedence over expediency and thrift. He trusted us to give him beautiful, well-considered interiors that blended seamlessly with their surrounding buildings and landscape, and in exchange for his trust we worked extremely hard to deliver our very best. And now our work continues for the next generation of Kanazawa’s at Half Century More. Projects in Kobe and Tachikawa near completion, and refresh work is ongoing in Kanagawa, Tsukaguchi and other previously-designed facilities. Happily, the values and standards that inspired our completed work live on in the projects of the future. Mr. K would be proud. Gerry Jue Founding Principal, BAMO December 2016
EARLY WORK
1996 SUN CITY KANAGAWA Our first project for HCM, Sun City Kanagawa is located on a gentle hilltop, with a spectacular view of Mt. Fuji to the west. BAMO, with BAR and SWA, replanned the in-progress project and then designed a lavish lobby, library, dining and activity spaces, a pool and ofuros, and model units. The retirement community opened with 385 residential units and quickly became the new benchmark for senior retirement interiors in Japan. 1999 SUN CITY KASHIWA This CCRC offers elegant and comfortable senior accommodations only one hour northeast of Tokyo. Sun City Kashiwa contains 97 apartments for independent residents in a mid-rise mansion block, while in low-rise Kashiwa Royal Care Gardens 173 nursing residents look out onto lush gardens. A common dining pavilion connects the two buildings. Generous lounges, libraries, baths and activity spaces have a “country club feel. A recent refesh created additional independent living units and major updates to the dining pavilion, library and lobby.

2003 SUN CITY MACHIDA Less than two hours northwest of central Tokyo, Sun City Machida II was developed as a stand-alone expansion to an original facility, to which it is connected by a bridge. Nine stories high and situated along a stream and park, it contains 215 independent living units atop a full menu of associated public spaces. This project represented BAMO’s first opportunity to create a total environment, from master planning to signage design, from interior finishes to furniture and art. Sun City Machida epitomizes senior mansion living in a suburban setting.

2005 SUN CITY TAKARAZUKA In a residential neighborhood in the well-known town of Takarazuka, BAMO created a calm and comfortable environment that overlooks nearby Osaka. There are 285 independent living units and a nursery care center, arranged in low-rise buildings that step down the gently sloping site. Lobbies, library, dining and bathing facilities, and activity spaces are each oriented towards a variety of landscaped courtyards. Recognition: IIDA Honor Awards - 2006

2009 SUN CITY PALACE TSUKAGUCHI BAMO designed this “destination” CCRC one hour northwest of Osaka so that private and public spaces are dignified, provide residential comfort, foster community pride, encourage social interaction, and take maximum advantage of daylight and sun orientation. Our largest design to date, Sun City Tsukaguchi contains 600 independent living units in 3 mid-rise towers organized around a central courtyard and outer landscape gardens. The design team was able to make a huge project feel intimate and welcoming through clever planning, short travel distances and a variety of garden views. Warm materials, custom lighting and carpets, soft window coverings and a careful integration of furnishings, color and artwork all contribute to a complete, well-considered environment for seniors. 2018 SUN CITY SHOW KINEN KOEN Nestled within the surrounding landscape of a national park, Sun City has the feel of a villa in the garden. With 500 independent units in a cluster of mid-rise towers that overlook the park, the layout promotes free-flowing spaces and orientation to natural light and garden views. Warm, natural colors and materials achieve a quiet, contemplative elegance in keeping with the outdoor landscape. Here, the concept is “to become one with the park”; primary common spaces, tea lounge and Sun City Hall are all oriented to maximize exposure to nature.
