SKYLINE FROM JUNCTION TO JUNCTION

MAJOR INTERVENTIONS

1.BAWNGKAWN BAZAAR

The problems faced by shopowners :

• lack of designated and comfortable space to sit and sell.

• Congested Narrow and dark spaces

• Lack of storage to store goods, thus keeping goods on the stairs

• Long flight of stairs without landings, having shops on either sides, creating sudden pauses while walking, thus making the way unsafe

THE INTERVENTIONS:

1. Design a prototype of basic counters and seating space for the shop owners.

2. Improving the infrastructure of the existing building to cater to the needs of people.

3. Employing covered drainage systems to cater to the health of the people, especially the workers

4. Proper Waste Management, especially the vegetable and meat market

2. FLYOVER

MAJOR INTERVENTIONS

The Bawngkawn junction faces a major problem of traffic which is coming from the Sairang road and goes towards Durtlang and Lunglei roads. Most of the heavy vehicles cross the same road which leads to the traffic.

A flyover connecting the Sairang Road to the Durtlang road can divert the traffic movement, especially that of the heavy vehicles leading towards Durtlang road, to reduce the traffic at Bawngkawn junction to some extent. This will cover an approximate distance of 300m and can be executed by using pile foundations to cater to the hazards of Earthquake Zone V construction and comprimising on some of the buildings.

MINOR INTERVENTIONS

1. GROUPING SIMILAR SHOPS

Bawngkawn being a commerical area, has multiple stores selling similar goods in between the junctions. Grouping these similar shops in certain clusters by considering the retail value, customar attraction and psychological aspects can help reduce the pedestrian traffic, while creating open spaces for walking and parking.

MINOR INTERVENTIONS

2.Reconstructing Roads

Reconstruct roads which have exposed services and improper drainage covers. They are used by the people and vehicles, creating hurdles in the movement.

Essential services crossing the roads are dangerous for incidents like pipe-leaks, and also people tripping over.
