MESSAGE FROM BEC CEO

WILLIAM "BILL" HETHERINGTON

The Importance of Community in Corporate America

YOU HEAR A LOT TODAY ABOUT the importance of technology and how it increases productivity and efficiency. The big technology firms led by names we all recognize; Jeff Bezos Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, but their business success comes without humility and a sense of purpose. Our business schools hail these technology firms as successful busines models to emulate, but they fail to emphasize the importance of business ethics and purpose, specifically the importance of giving back to th communities they serve. This concept is not new, if in fact it is an essential core principle for the cooperative business model.

I recently read a book titled Shaping an American Institution written by James C. Worthy, and it is about General Robert Wood and Sears & Roebuck. The book follows Wood from the beginning days at the turn of the 20th century, where he was fighting in China during the Boxe Rebellion, to leading the American Expeditionary Force in the building of the Panama Canal. From this experience, he developed the concept of integrating mass distribution with mass production to provide greater value to the retail public.

He joined Sears in 1924 when it was a mail order business and had 23,000 employees and $206 million in sales, and by the time he left Sears, 30 years later, it was the largest merchandising organization in the world with sales of more than $3 billion and more than 200,000 employees. From the business perspective, they were a very successful organization, but the most important aspect was the “purpose” of Sears. In 1950, he outlined the philosophy of how every business should operate: “(1) the customer – they should get the courteous, fair, and respectful treatment so they are completely satisfied in every way (2) the employee—business managers should view themselves as the trustees for their employees, truly interested in their welfare; (3) the community—I believe it be the part of wisdom for every prosperous corporation to respond to the needs of the community, willing and generously; (4) last comes the stockholder—if the first thre are properly taken care of, the stockholder will benefit from the long pull.

Wood’s concept of business purpose was revolutionary for his era, and it established standards which kept Sears in the vanguard of business practice for many years thereafter. I think that our corporate business community and academic institutions could learn a lot about “purpose and value” from the example set by Wood and Sears.

BEC Offers Wealth of Community Support

Intern reflects on co-op programs

BY PAULINA PEARSON, BEC SUMMER INTERN

NOT MANY COLLEGE STUDENTS GET the opportunity to work for an electric cooperative. Luckily, I had this opportunity through the University of Texas at Austin. My experience interning for Bandera Electric Cooperative over the summer was one like no other; I came in not knowing what to expect and left with an abundance of knowledge that I can take with me on future endeavors.

Not only did I learn marketing and communication skills, but I learned about an industry I had no knowledge of prior to this internship. What came as the biggest surprise to me was the wealth of community support that BEC offers to it members and communities. I had the pleasure of interviewing multiple BEC members about their experiences, and their support of BEC was overwhelming. Some of you may be wondering how an electric co-op can impact its community at a great level. It’s simple if you ask BEC CEO Bill Hetherington.

“I think it gets back to trust. The reason people like BEC is because they know that our motivations are to help them,” says Hetherington. “I think being a part of the community

cannot be overlooked.” Hetherington believes that BEC’s main goal is to provide for the surrounding communities, and doing that starts with trust. BEC supports many nonprofits, includin organizations like Day 1 Bags. Hunter Beaton, founder of the Boerne nonprofit, backs Hetherington’ statement. “[BEC] gives us the opportunity to serve our mission well, which enables our community to reach and connect with each other,” says Beaton. Day 1 Bags started in 2016, and BEC has supported the nonprofi in many ways. The goal of Day 1 Bags is to provide foster children with backpacks containing anything they might need while traveling from home-to-home, or school. “A donation speaks volumes, but the community connections that you make, those are even better because they help us find other connections in th future,” says Beaton. He believes it is essential for the community to gather and discuss its goals, which is one of the many reasons why BEC holds its Annual Meeting of the Membership. Not only does BEC aid community members and nonprofits, but also businesses. “BEC's involvemen with the EDC has been huge,” says Amy Story, Kendall County Economic Development Corporation president. BEC has supported the EDC’s Incubator project in Boerne, an upcoming multi-use building PHOTO BY KATI FITZPATRICK with a focus on creating opportunities for residents to pursue careers as entrepreneurs. “I think BEC is a very innovative company with a great reputation within their community,” adds Story. Hetherington emphasizes this as well, stating that BEC “nurtures the community and businesses, building a strong business network.” My time interning at BEC has taught me that BEC not only offers funds to help the community, but als offers a multitude of services to its members. Amon these services are affordable fiber broadband, sol power systems, its Energy Saver Program for interest free energy efficiency improvements, and Apolloware, a uniq energy analytics software. All of the BEC members I have spoken with are grateful for how BEC responds to issues, questions, or anything else they might need. When asked about her experience with BEC, Bandera High School teacher Morgan Groff, stated “It's bee really positive … they have been really great at answering any questions and would call me back to make sure the job was done.” Groff also mentions that subscribing to and partakin in multiple services from one company is easier and more convenient. It allows people to go about their lives without having to worry about their electricity, internet or whatever it may be. My favorite part about working at BEC was engaging with community members and helping others. After all, as Hetherington put it, “we are a community-based organization that’s all about giving back to the community.”

BANDERA ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE RECENTLY DONATED

Society of St. Vincent de Paul receives food and household goods from the San Antonio Food Bank and accept contributions from stores and individuals for distribution to those in need. In addition to the food pantry, they also offer financial aid to he pay for bills.

“We appreciate BEC’s support,” said Henke. “We have helped with BEC bills for at least 20 years.” Society of St. Vincent de Paul assisted in paying 161 BEC bills between June 2021 and June 2022 for members in need.

The food pantry and financial aid office is partly fun through proceeds from the sale of donated goods at St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store located at 1145 Broadway in Kerrville. The thrift store is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“There is a great need in the community,” said John McCalla, SVDP volunteer. “We see new faces in here every month, especially now with the rising food prices.” McCalla has been volunteering at the food pantry for more than 25 years.

The food pantry and financial aid office is open Wednes from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. To discover more about Society of St. Vincent de Paul and how you can help, visit www.svdpndkerr.org.

Choose Your Energy Rate Plan To Save Energy, Money

BEC’S WINTER TIME-BASED USAGE RATES TAKE EFFECT October 1.

This optional program provides different energy rates based on the seaso and time of day energy is used. It more accurately reflects the actual cost o energy.

BEC has an exceptionally low, flat electric rate of $0.067 per kilowatt hour, compared to the average state rate of $0.1182 per kWh and the average national rate of $0.1326 per kWh. However, members who sign up for BEC’s TBU plan can reduce their monthly electric bill even further by adjusting their energy use to off-peak times

TBU rates have specific rates for designated time periods, which reflec the volatility of the electric energy market. During the winter season, the TBU normal rate is $0.059 per kWh from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 8 to 11 p.m. TBU economy rate is $0.053 per kWh from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. To see the greatest savings, members should shift as much energy use to the economy time. Ideally, members should avoid the peak time period from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This includes delaying the use of dishwashers, dryers and other high energy use appliances.

“This voluntary program gives members the power to reduce their energy bill,” said Becky Bradburn, BEC chief financial officer. “In addition, not only helps members save money, it also keeps electric rates low for the whole cooperative by reducing overall demand.”

TBU winter rates run from October through May, and summer rates run from June through September. To learn more about TBU plans, please visit BanderaElectric.com/TBU or call 866.226.3372 to speak to a member relations representative. BEC YOUTH PROGRAMS

SUE CAMMACK RESIDES IN THE RURAL TOWN of Bandera with her husband, James, and their four children. The family lives in a house tucked away on Hackberry Street in the middle of town. From the outside, it looks like an ordinary home; but within those four walls, the Cammacks have their very own schoolhouse where they spend their days learning.

Nine years ago, Sue and James felt a calling to navigate from conventional public school and educate their children at home. The four kids, 13-year-old James "Jimmy," 10-yearold Sophia, 5-year-old Cameron, and 4-year-old Mac, have primarily been homeschooled besides occasionally attending part-time Christ-centered childcare programs.

“My husband and I wanted to make sure that the pillar of our education was Bible based and felt like we could do that best at home," explained Sue when discussing their reasoning for choosing to homeschool. "Our oldest son was also really advanced. We felt we could help him progress further in a oneon-one environment compared to a classroom.”

Now, after nine years, all four kids are being homeschooled. Courses like Bible study, history, and sciences are often done together but subjects like math are done independently to accommodate the different levels. The children’s primar curriculum is done online. They also utilize online resources such as Khan Academy, which offers educational videos an helps each child advance at their own pace. In addition to videos, they also use apps that correlate with their curriculum and provide extra projects.

Having access to fast, reliable internet is a massive variable in home education today. The Cammacks have been BEC members for 12 years and subscribed to BEC Fiber in October 2019. At any given time, the Cammacks have six to eight devices using the internet during their school day. “It was faster and less expensive than our previous provider,” said Sue. “I feel like the customer service is a lot better too. I can talk to someone and not go through a million automated questions.” The Cammacks also rely on the internet to stream documentaries, watch YouTube tutorial videos, and for the younger kids to play Reading Eggs while Sue is helping the older children. They often utilize their smart TVs to cast their lessons and BEC Fiber Empowers Homeschooling science experiments to watch before they attempt them. In The Hill Country Being the primary educator for all four kids, Sue often must give additional attention to one child BY KATI FITZPATRICK while the other do independent lessons. “I never have to worry about their videos freezing up or buffering because there are too many devices connected,” sai Sue, “which had been a problem in the past.” Doubling as both mom and teacher, it offers comfort to know that when it is tim to begin the school day, they will be able to access their courses and begin their lessons. “We have had two little issues,” giggles Sue, “but they were our fault.” One of their youngest sons, Cameron, cut the fibe wire twice within two weeks. “The technicians came out and fixed it, but I felt so silly. We now have a shelf blocking th wire. They are just mischievous little boys.” One of the most appealing aspects of homeschooling in the flexibility. Most of their schoolwork can be completed b noon. Once the kids have completed their chores, they spend their afternoon going to the public libraries, playing sports, or doing their independent hobbies. The kids participate in extracurricular activities outside of their home: Jimmy is enrolled in virtual chess classes and golf, while Sophia does dance. They family also takes occasional classes at private schools, and have been a part of co-ops and play groups to interact with other children. The Cammack family is confident in their decision t homeschool their children and feel fortunate to have had many wonderful mentors in the beginning who helped guide them; however, homeschooling is not for everyone. “I feel passionate that everyone should choose the education model that’s right for their family,” says Sue. “For some families that is homeschooling and for others it is public or private school.”

Keep Food Safe During Outages

SEVERE WINDS, LIGHTNING and even squirrels can temporarily cause the power to go out any season of the year. We understand power outages of any length can be frustrating, especially when your fridge is stocked with perishable foods.

Extended power outages are rare, but when they occur, it’s important to take food safety measures to avoid illness.

Here are a few outage-related safety tips to keep in mind.

Before an Outage

A good rule of thumb is to keep an emergency supply kit on hand. Be sure to include nonperishable food items like bottled water, powdered milk, canned goods, cereal and protein bars in your emergency kit.

If you have advance warning that an outage is possible, fill a cooler with ice just in case the outage spans several hours.

During an Outage

If an outage occurs, do not open the fridge or freezer unless absolutely necessary. An unopened refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours. A half-full freezer will keep food frozen for about 24 hours and a full freezer for about 48 hours. If it looks like the power outage will last longer than four hours, move your important perishable items to an ice-filled cooler

After an Outage

If refrigerated foods have been exposed to temperatures higher than 40 degrees for more than two hours, discard the items. If any foods have an unusual color, odor or texture, they should be thrown away.

Although most perishable foods should be thrown out after an extended outage, there are a few items that are safe to consume after a two-hour exposure to 40-plus degrees: properly wrapped hard cheese and butter or margarine; condiments like ketchup, mustard and relish; and peanut butter.

After an outage, always smell and inspect foods before consuming and remember: When in doubt, throw it out.

Halloween Safety by the Letter

EVERYONE LOVES A GOOD SCARE

on Halloween but not when it comes to child safety. These tips will help make the festivities fun and safe.

Swords and costume accessories should be short, soft and flexible

Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.

Fasten reflective tape to costumes o carry glowsticks to be easily seen.

Examine treats before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat.

Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating t help you see and others see you.

Always test makeup first and remove i promptly after coming home.

Look both ways before crossing the street. Use crosswalks wherever possible.

Lenses in the eyes or decorative masks can hinder vision or cause injury.

Only walk on sidewalks or on the far edge of the road facing traffi

Wear well-fitted costumes and shoes t avoid tripping and falling.

Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Don’t eat homemade treats made by strangers.

Enter homes or accept rides only from those you know, never strangers.

Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Wear flame-resistant costumes

Get Your Home Ready for Cooler Weather

HEATING SEASON WILL be here before you know it. Here are a few ways to keep your energy use—and your utility bills—in check as the weather cools.

Assess your home’s current energy use with a home energy assessment. A home energy audit is one of the best ways to gain a full understanding of the current status of your home, including how much energy it uses, where the inefficiencies may be and what areas to prioritize. Consider working with professional or energy adviser from Bandera Electric Cooperative to provide a thorough analysis.

Consider ways to air seal your home as a cost-effective strategy t reduce air conditioning costs. As outside temperatures cool, gaps around doors and windows allow your home’s heated air to escape. Caulking and weatherstripping are two ways to reduce the amount of air that leaks in or out of your home.

Check for gaps in your walls around windows, doors and holes in exterior walls where cords and cables enter the house. Cool air that leaks into the house through those gaps can compete with the warm air your heating system pumps. Keeping cool air outside where it belongs will mean your heating system doesn’t have to work as hard to keep your family comfortable.

Set the thermostat to 68 degrees. At bedtime and before everyone leaves the house for the day, dial it down between 7 and 10 degrees. Lowering the temperature by that amount for eight hours a day can save up to 10% on heating costs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Install a programmable thermostat. The easiest way to ensure that the thermostat rises and lowers depending on whether anyone is in the house is to program it ahead of time to automatically change temperatures.

Reverse the direction that your ceiling fan blades spin. A clockwise movement pushes warm air back down into the room, which can make people in the room feel warmer.

Replace or clean the filters in your heating and air conditioning systems A clogged filter blocks air from flowing through, which makes your HV system work harder and use more energy.

Make an appointment with an HVAC technician to inspect your heating system and repair any problems before it gets cold outside. Spending a little on maintenance now could head off a more costly problem later

Make window, door and HVAC upgrades with interest-free financing from BEC.

Make upgrades to your home or business to save money and energy with BEC's Energy Saver Program. Take advantage of zero down, interest-free, on-bill financing for the energy improvements you need. There are no credit checks or income requirements.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T Clogged, Backed—up Septic System…Can anything Restore It?

DEAR DARRYL: My home is about 10 years old, and so is my septic system. I have always taken pride in keeping my home and property in top shape. In fact, my neighbors and I are always kidding each other about who keeps their home and yard nicest. Lately, however, I have had a horrible smell in my yard, and also in one of my bathrooms, coming from the shower drain. My grass is muddy and all the drains in my home are very slow. My wife is on my back to make the bathroom stop smelling and as you can imagine, my neighbors are having a field day, kidding me about the mud pit and sewage stench in my yard. It’s humiliating. I called a plumber buddy of mine, who recommended pumping (and maybe even replacing) my septic system. But at the potential cost of thousands of dollars, I hate to explore that option. I tried the store bought, so called, Septic treatments out there, and they did Nothing to clear up my problem. Is there anything on the market I can pour or flush into my system that will restore it to normal, and keep it maintained?

Dear Dear Darryl Darryl

Clogged and Smelly – Austin, TX DEAR CLOGGED AND SMELLY: As a reader of my column, I am sure you are aware that I have a great deal of experience in this particular field.
