Finding the Right Fit BY LINDSEY BERTRAND BEC Staff Writer
WHEN THEY RELOCATED FROM DALLAS TO MEDINA IN 2016, Brian and Tracy Jordan wanted to make the most of the Hill Country. After searching for property with a view, they found a hillside home north of Medina and began making it their own. Today they have a house, cabin, office, two garages, a workshop and storage building all served by Bandera Electric. Earlier this year, the Jordans began thinking about adding solar power to their property. They had seen the demonstration solar panels at BEC’s headquarters, and Tracy had received information from other solar panel installers. Before they committed, Tracy wanted to make sure that going solar was the right move. So she called BEC Solar for more information and connected with Evan Duran, BEC Solar Project Manager. Duran conducts energy audits and creates proposals for BEC members who are considering solar energy systems. “I called and left a message on a Sunday evening, and Evan called me that Monday morning,” said Tracy. “I felt very comfortable with BEC because I know where they are, and I know they’re not going anywhere.” Duran also provided the Jordans with the names of other BEC
members who had invested in solar power so that Tracy and Brian could ask questions and get feedback. “I was so pleased to have references and to have local people I could talk to,” said Tracy. “I spoke with one member for 20 minutes!” Tracy also encourages others who may be thinking of solar energy to reach out to BEC and BEC Solar. “If you don’t know all the answers, BEC can help,” she said. BEC’s rebate and a federal tax credit also made the Jordans’ financial decision easier. Because of their property’s location and layout, BEC Solar designed a 12.4-kilowatt ground-mounted system rather than a roof-mounted system for the Jordans. “For us, a ground-mounted system made sense,” said Brian. “We found a spot that would maximize its efficiency.” “We liked the look, and it really fit our site,” added Tracy. From finding the right property to designing the right solar energy system, the Jordans’ experience has been about finding the right fit and finding the right partners in BEC and BEC Solar. “Our electric service has worked so well, and we have been impressed with the reliability,” said Brian. “And now with solar, we’ve been extremely pleased with the whole process.”
2019 is the last year to receive a full 30% investment tax credit. Solar systems must be installed before December 31, 2019. BEC is offering rebates toward qualifying BEC Solar installations in the BEC service territory through October 31, while they last.
