BEC Sponsors Comfort ISD’s Shattered Dreams Program ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, EMPLOYEES FROM BANDERA ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE presented Comfort ISD with a check for $1,500 to fund its Shattered Dreams program. Shattered Dreams is a two-day, school-based program that promotes responsible decision-making among high school students regarding underage drinking and impaired driving. Comfort ISD holds a Shattered Dreams program once every three years to emphasize the results of alcohol-related crashes including on those who drive after drinking, the innocent victims, and their friends and families. “This is a powerful program purposefully held days before prom to prevent drinking and driving before, during and after the event,” said Tucker Webb, Kendall County Sheriff deputy. The school district works with local law enforcement, students and parents to hold a mock drunk-driving crash and a mock funeral for victims of the crash. A student/ parent retreat is held afterwards to reflect on the event, and guest speakers provide firsthand experiences of alcohol-related accidents. The monetary donation will help acquire vehicles and equipment for the mock crash, purchase make-up for emergency trauma and casualty reenactment, and for other incidentals. “This donation was the entire operating budget for the last Shattered Dreams project we held. Having this donation will help us purchase all the necessary items to make this project a success,” Webb said. As a cooperative, BEC continues to uphold the principle of Concern for Community by promoting programs that influence positive change in the community, donating needed items and funds to organizations and people in its service territory throughout the year.
