Marissa Holliday English ACE 89 Song Book Movie piece. “Damn it, why wont this thing work?...Well I don’t know, the box says 6 years and older. If a six year old can do it, how are we having trouble with it?” Mouse Trap was a game that my friends, Steve and Alex have played before, but I had not. We all decided to have a game night one night so naturally, I wanted to try something I haven’t done before. I am, and always have been, a sucker for trying new board games. But little did I know that although Steve and Alex have played this game before that they had absolutely no idea what they were doing. It’s how you could describe a “typical Friday night” for us. “I can’t back it up because then this doesn’t hit it! And this thing is connected to this thing, so it’ll hit this thing, which will make that thing go to that thing! …” You would think with age comes maturity. That people grow and gain wisdom. Well…my friends and I are a slightly unique group of people. The majority of our nights are spent being, well, weird. If you have ever seen “That 70s Show” or heard its theme song “In the Street” by Cheap Trick, there would be various easily recognizable similarities with the characters in the show and my friends and I. Our winters are spent in my best friends basement usually playing video games (XBOX 360), watching movies/television, or fooling around on the exercise equipment in the back room; probably not the safest idea. Someone ended up getting hurt on one of them because he was doing everything else but use it correctly. Keeping that in the back of our minds, we still do it anyway. Watching other people’s reactions (especially if they don’t know us) when we are around each other is priceless. My friends are mainly made up of band members, or as we know each other as, the typical band nerds. So we are exceptionally close friends. We marchliterally and figurativelyto the beat of our own drum. I wonder about the thoughts and comments that go through other people’s minds when we are with each other. By watching “That 70s Show” I feel as though I catch a glimpse of what others must see. There’s that one person who makes the disturbing yet surprisingly hysterical comments
or jokes. Or the person who just has to be “that guy” who does something extremely stupid but you are still best friends with them despite your better judgment. I could probably easily make a list of which of my friends in real life would correspond with the characters of the popular television series. Although some people might be ashamed to have such crazy friends, I am not. I am proud to say that my friends are sometimes ridiculous, inappropriate and insane. No matter how much we may drive each other crazy, or insult each other, like those friends on “That 70s Show”, we will always have each others back, regardless of the circumstances.
