Village honors the 20th anniversary of John Glenn’s return to space Dana Davis Editor-in-Chief On Oct. 29, the John and Annie Glenn Museum and Muskingum University celebrated the 20th anniversary of John Glenn’s return to space upon the Discovery in 1998. The John and Annie Glenn Museum hosted an open house on the day and had several speakers talk about their experienc-

es with Glenn and the day he returned to space. The audience was also able to share their experiences as well. Orbit Media celebrated the anniversary by broadcasting the launch and soundbites from 1998 on WMCO. Two Muskingum University students involved in radio, Scott Sellins and Maria Rittenhouse, were able to travel to Florida

for the launch. “The biggest thing for me was how magical it was. It was so cool to be covering this for the college and the radio station,” Sellins said in a soundbite from 1998. Senator John H. Glenn, born in Cambridge, on July 18, 1921, grew up in New Concord and attended Muskingum University majoring in Chemistry.

World College Radio Day celebrated on campus Dana Davis Editor-in-Chief Every year, World College Radio Day is a day when students across the globe raise awareness for college radio and celebrates it as a platform for unique and creative expression. The theme for this year’s celebration was “When all else fails, college radio speaks.” The celebration was a 24-hour broadcast embracing culture and language all around the world. The day was founded in 2012 by Rob Quicke, vice president and co-founder of WCRD. World College Radio Day, took place on Oct. 5, was celebrated by Muskingum University’s own station, WMCO 90.7 FM. Students celebrated by hanging a banner from John Glenn Gym thanking the university for allowing the station to broadcast. Students also played their favorite songs from the WMCO music library during their live student DJ shows. WMCO began its first broadcast on Jan. 28, 1961, by student Hal Burlingame who now sits as chair of the Board of Trusties at the university. WMCO can be heard at 90.7 FM or it can be streamed online at OrbitMediaOnline.com.

Jenning’s Java continues to prosper for student Mary Double Staff Reporter Jennings Java started and is operated by Daniel Jennings, a Muskingum University student. It all began when he got his driver’s license. This allowed him to be able to travel to more coffee shops. “I fell in love with coffee culture in Columbus,” said Jennings. He loves going to coffee shops and experiencing all the different flavors. Jennings first started roasting his own coffee when he was a freshman in college. “Since then I have loved creating the flavor of coffee,” he said. Jennings is currently studying business so when he got the idea for his own business, he thought it would be a good start. Jennings wanted to start early so that he could learn from his mistakes and get them out of the way for his future career. The official start date of Jennings Java was in April of 2016. He has two fellow business partners which include his father and AJ Kazmierczak, who he met through the ignition program at Muskingum University. The ignition program is what helped them decide to join together. The main location of where their coffee is roasted is in New Concord. Jennings Java currently sells their products to different coffee shops with one of these shops being Chapman’s Coffee House. Next year, Jennings Java hopes to set up a permanent location in Columbus. In three to four years, they are looking to open their own coffee shop. Jennings’ goal is to be able to support himself from the business after he graduates from college. He hopes to get a small part-time job on the side just to make sure that he doesn’t have to take any money out of his business. Jennings Java has gotten a request to be on the show “Shark Tank,” which he turned down. Jennings said they had an article about the offer published in Ink Magazine about a year ago and only turned the offer down because they didn’t feel they were ready. Since he was already asked to apply and reached out to, he still has the connection and the option to do it. Jennings wants to first focus on graduating and maybe take up this offer in the near future.

Club Spotlight: Sigma Tau Delta Dana Davis Editor-in-Chief Muskingum University’s English honorary, Sigma Tau Delta, is an organization devoted to fostering a love of literature and language. Students who have shown exemplary performance in the English discipline get inducted in the spring to become lifelong members. This opens many doors for students, such as a trip to the annual Sigma Tau Delta conference, where students may share their creative and non-fiction projects as well as meet with members from other chapters. Muskingum’s chapter, Omega Alpha, is the second oldest branch of Sigma Tau Delta in the Country. On campus, Sigma Tau Delta hosts Poe in the Parlor, an annual poetry reading where students can share their works that celebrate the macabre just in time for Halloween. Upcoming projects include a campus book drive.

Village brings in holiday cheer with annual parade Mary Double Staff Reporter This year’s annual New Concord Area Board of Trade Christmas Parade took place on Monday, Nov. 26. The parade consists of different groups and organizations in the village showcasing themselves and also wishing everyone a “Merry Christmas.” Many of the organizations traveled the parade in floats but multiple groups walked the stretch, as well. The parade route started on Main Street at the Community Bank and ended by Scott’s Diner. When a group would arrive at the very center of the parade route, their name and contribution was announced over microphone for the crowd hear. Many of these organizations and groups involved in the parade threw candy to the children watching and wished everyone a happy holiday season. This year’s parade grand marshal was Fire Chief Brent Gates. The parade was a snowy one but many people still lined the streets of New Concord to catch this village tradition.

Chinese vs. American customs

News

Celebrating the Spring Festival in Ohio this year Bona Zhang Staff Writer Living in the United States for three months, I have witnessed many differences not only in the cultures but also in the lifestyles which between the US and China, my homeland. In my opinion, the best way to see the differences between those two countries is via festivals. Unfortunately, although I'm very eager to learn how the real Christmas is celebrated in America, it is my first time in the US and I haven't experienced an authentic Christmas yet. You might have heard about some Chinese festivals, and one of these festivals in China, has the same status as Christmas in the US. It is called Spring Festival. Spring Festival is definitely the most important holiday in China. All people, whether you're a student, a teacher, or a worker, as long as you are Chinese, you're expected to come back home and celebrate this week-long festival together with your family. We eat special traditional food and play fireworks together, plus, parents will usually buy a new set of clothes for their children. There are some famous symbols which represent the spirit of Spring Festival. The first one is dumplings. Eating

dumplings has almost become a stereotype when people talk about Spring Festival. Well, I have to say that is true. The reason why it can be the most significant part of Spring Festival is that dumplings are not only good to eat but also bring all the family members together. The authentic dumplings must be handmade, so everyone participates in making dumplings and that's how the family is connected. We might not live together most of the time or see each other often, but as we prepare and cook dumplings, we finally have a chance to talk about our lives and share our feelings with each other. The second symbol is my favorite: lucky money! Lucky money is a little tricky part of this festival, because it's only for children (Oh, I suddenly remembered that I won't have lucky money anymore because it's only for the kids under age 18. Sad!). The money will be given by elders, and it is usually put in a red envelope, so it has another name, “the Red Pack”. Children are very happy when they get their lucky money because it's often a big amount of cash. You might be curious about why we give money to children. Well, here's the story about the lucky money. It was said that once upon a time there was a monster called "The Age" and it likes to kill small

kids who just celebrated their birthdays. Many kids were killed and all the people were in a state of panic. In order to solve this problem, an ancient wizard came up with the idea of putting some coins under the kids' pillows to prevent them from being killed. It sounds weird, but guess what? It works! So, to protect children's lives, this has become a tradition and has been kept for thousands of years. I'm not sure if the story is true or not, but, money is always good to receive. Isn't it? There are still many other traditional customs which take place during Spring Festival; almost too many to mention. As you can see, Spring Festival is a holiday but it is also more than a holiday. It provides people with a good chance to spend time with their families and close friends. Nowadays, most people are too busy working, traveling, or hanging out with friends, and sometimes they forget to take care of their families. During Spring Festival, everyone not only gets a holiday to break from work and take a breath, but also have time to share precious time with their folks. Just like Christmas. The true spirit of spring festival is not about eating special food or getting presents, but spending time with those you love.

Kids n Sibs welcomed on campus Mary Double Staff Reporter Kids n Sibs Weekend is a special event that Muskingum hosts every year for an excuse to have loved ones stay with you on campus. The theme varies every year for the event but the university sets up and hosts all kinds of activities such as bounce houses

on the east lawn and bingo and a movie in the chess. This year’s theme was “Super Heroes.” The kids and sibs were taught how to make all kinds of crafts relating to this theme. The events were scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday of the weekend including the football game.

Sports Editorial

My best MLB free agents by positions and sleepers Michael Pagano Sports Columnist I’ve taken some time and looked at all the free agents in the MLB this offseason, position by position. This is a list of who I feel are the players that should be picked up at that position, along with the sleeper player for that position, why I’ve picked these players and what I feel they would bring to the team if picked up. Catcher: Best- Yasmani Grandal- Although he received lots of grief for his performance defensively during the postseason, he is still a great player. He brings a lot of homerun power from a position that lacks a lot of consistent hitters. Grandal has hit 27, 22, and 24 homeruns in his past three seasons with the Dodgers. He would give a team a solid bat. Sleeper: Devin Mesoraco- He has been hit with the injury bug big time, but before that he was going to be the future at the catching position for the Cincinnati Reds. Although it didn’t work out for the Reds, another team would be getting a pretty young player who could still bring some potential. He hit 25 homeruns for the Reds in 2014, and could possibly DH for an American League team. First Base: Best- Matt Adams- He brings a lot of power at a position that you need to have a homerun threat. He has had 16, 20, and 21 homeruns in his past three years, and could easily come close to 40 homeruns if he can put it all together for a full season. Sleeper: Hanley Ramirez- Although he is getting older, he is still a guy that was a great player in his prime and could definitely still give you a few good years. He is a former silver-slugger winner, and would be a great veteran guy to have around the clubhouse, even if he is just in a bench role. Second Base: Best- DJ LeMahieu- He is a former batting champion, but is underrated due to playing at Coors Field. He is also a three-time gold glove winner, and would be a great pickup for any team. Sleeper: Jed Lowrie- He just put together his best season to date, and would give you a solid hitter, and a great all-around player. He would give you a veteran presence, and could be one of the better players on any team. He is a guy that I feel teams will wonder if he can keep playing at a high level. Third Base: Best- Mike Moustakas- He is a solid hitter, that would give you homerun power from a position that needs to have it. He has had 38 and 28 homeruns in the past two seasons. He has also been around some

December 2018

winning teams, so he would bring a good presence to a locker room. He could also be a DH if he is on an AL team. Sleeper: Josh Donaldson- He is a former MVP, but has had some injury issues so he has flown under the radar. He brings homerun power, and is a two-time silver slugger award winner. He is a solid fielder, but could DH for you if he is on an AL team. He could end up getting back to MVP form, and being great for a team. Teams are going to be looking for him to do just that. Shortstop: Best- Manny Machado- He is a great all-around player. He has a ton of homerun power, and is a former gold-glove winner. He could also play third base if needed, and brings an attitude to the field. He would be a huge pickup for any team. Sleeper: Freddy Galvis- He is a solid player, that may not bring anything amazing to your team, but will be more than serviceable. Whether this be in a starter or bench role, he is experienced and durable and just a type of player you need on every team. Left Field: Best- Marwin Gonzalez- He is basically a utility player and would be an awesome guy to have on your team. He is a solid hitter with some homerun power and will hit doubles for you. He is also a solid fielder. Sleeper: Hunter Pence- He is a veteran guy that would be great to have around the clubhouse. He has been on winning teams and knows what it takes to win. He is a good allaround player, that may be out of his prime, but could give you a few more serviceable years in a starters or bench role. He has some homerun power as he has 224 career homeruns. Center Field: Best- Adam Jones- He is a veteran guy that has been pretty underrated for the most part. He has been consistent and will give you a great center fielder, and I am sure could play all three outfield spots. He is a four-time gold glove winner and has homerun power with 266 career homeruns, and is a durable player. Sleeper: Rajai Davis- He has been around for a while, and could be a perfect backup guy. He has been on some good teams, and is a great runner, which gives you a perfect pinch-runner. He is a good guy for every team to have. Right Fielder: Best- Bryce Harper- He is a former MVP, who still has a lot of prime years ahead of him. He is a big time homerun hitter, and could DH for an AL team. He brings a lot of hype with him, which could be a bit of a downfall if he doesn’t perform as well as

OrbitMediaOnline.com

expected. This being said, he would be a huge pickup for any team. Sleeper: Jon Jay- He has been underrated for a while, and has never been amazing, but would bring you a solid player whether it be in a bench role or starter. He is also a veteran guy to have in the clubhouse. Designated Hitter: Best- Nelson Cruz- He has a bunch of homerun power, which is what you want out of a DH. He has been consistent, and will bring you homeruns and RBI’s wherever he goes. He may not hit for a ton of average, but he doesn’t necessarily need to. He also has lots of experience playing in the outfield, and could do that if necessary. He is a solid pickup for any team. Sleeper: Pedro Alvarez- He has struggled over the past few years, but has also had a few respectable years. He would be a perfect bat for a pinch-hitter role, as he brings homerun power, as he is a former silver-slugger award winner. He could be better than expected. Starting Pitcher: Best- Patrick CorbinHe is a great lefty starter that brings a lot of strikeouts to any team. He is a top of the rotation starter that would be perfect to go along with a few other solid starters. He is still pretty young, and is durable and could definitely keep getting better as he just had arguably his best season. Sleeper: Charlie Morton- He has electric stuff, and it took him awhile to figure everything out, as he has struggled for the first part of his career. He is a strikeout guy, and could potentially be a top of the rotation guy. He has had his best two seasons over the last two years, and could either keep going up or go down from here as he is getting up there in age. Teams could be skeptical on whether to give him a lot of money to sign him due to his inconsistency. Relief Pitcher: Best- Craig Kimbrel- He is a huge name who would bring you a lot of hype and saves. He has great stuff, and has experience on some good teams, but who know if he is worth a ton of money for a one-inning guy. If you do take him though, he will almost surely be productive. Sleeper: Zach Britton- He had one of the best seasons ever by a reliever a few years ago, but has fallen out of the spotlight due to injuries. If he gets completely healthy he could still be great, and is a perfect guy to give a chance to see if he can get back to a top reliever in the MLB form. Now it will be interesting to see how these athletes play out in this coming season, and see where they all end up.
