Taksim is the heart of Istanbul and Istanbul is the city where cultures meet literally and historically Every day of the year, day and night, people pour to Taksim. Metaphorically, Taksim shapes people; in turn, people shape Taksim, thus the notion of human topography: People arrive, meet, wait, rest, celebrate, remember, vindicate their rights, work, move or cross, share ideas, inform themselves and take responsibility about the city. The movements of the square, grades, slopes, embankments, plans, lighting, and shadows, adapt themselves to the topography of the place and the richness of this human topography in different seasons with sun, rain, wind or snow. Taksim and Gezi Park is the place where territory and city meet, is the place where nature and artifice connect. 15
URBAN SCALE ANALYSIS Taksim square and surrounding environments are the most vibrant areas in terms of historically and culturally significant landmarks not only from the Byzantian and Ottoman times but also in the Republican era. This rich cultural mosaic reflects a multinational, multicultural, multi-religion context that is unique to the site. The area is not only a center for education, business, and commerce but also a hub of social and political discourses and actions.
LANDMARKS
Existing green areas look fragmented due to historical land use development, The coastal line lack green parks. The main axes of movement lack greening to provide a comfortable walk, especially in summer times. The accessibility of the competition site is possible by different modes of transportation medium and pedestrian ways. Subway and sea transportation brings people from everywhere in the metropolitan area while the public bus and dolmuĹ&#x; also serve to bring people to their jobs and schools everyday.

GREEN SYSTEM
SPATIAL PROPOSALS
The proposed green system relies on the existing parks and approaches to the city from a green network point of view. Gezi Park is an essential part of the urban ecology. Because the urban mosaic is very congested, the opportunities are related to the infrastructure lines and coastal front.

SUGGESTED RAINWATER COLLECTING POINTS
The square has large impervious surfaces. Therefore rainwater immediately starts surface flow to specific directions. This pattern has no intention of water harvesting though it is possible. The new project proposes a novel rainwater harvesting and storage scheme to enable climate-resilient and water sensitive urban design. Three major interventions hierarchically include water reflection pond and meadow. a retention pond. and cistern.

Man’ skin is protector for our soul and thoughts. Like a shell, our body works as a shielder to protect our spirit. In that black day, they wanted to kill people’s thoughts, hopes and alliances via killing people. Our idea is eternizing dead people via representing as a tree. We will be a whole in their shadows. 103 victims in this square is represented as the Ginkgo biloba tree that was cultivated early in human history. Unlike human body, Body (tree) and spirit (thoughts) change place. Thoughts and hopes (timeless skin) will protect the tree body. TAGLINE OF THE STORY ...train stations are so alike the microcosmos of the cities from the point of having the component samples of the whole, the memorial square has imagined as microcosmos of Ankara. Since Ankara Train Station is a gate for the city even for the country, “city gate” transforms into a “time gate” depending on this point of view. Moreover, train station has a meaning for both time and space in terms of travel. While the station provides travelling all around the space in reality, the multilayered atmosphere of Ankara Train Station and its square also give a chance to travel in time. By this metaphor, it is aimed to emphasize the historical layers of it, beside the actual meaning of travel. As a result; in spacetime perspective, it can be imagined as a “Time Station”. Thus, it provides a gate for the victims of October 10 Massacre to pass through “Time Station” which works like Einstein-Rosen Bridge and their thoughts have remained. At this point, “Ginkgo biloba” tree has chosen as a symbol of “Einstein-Rosen Bridge” in order to imply we did not lose the victims since their thoughts are still alive. A “skin” has created on Ginkgo biloba as a representative of their thoughts
40
TIMELESS SKIN
FOR UNFINISHED STORIES
On October 10th, people gathered to demand peace and democracy in front of the Ankara Train Station. Every one of them have different background and past, however they were here together as a whole for saying one thing in common. Even though they are not with us physically and their words left unfinished, their thoughts continue to sprout forever...
41
SKIN AND GROUND COVER
The timeless skin is made of metal and is composed of two pieces. These pieces cover the tree body. There is a gap between these pieces, this emptiness is enlightened, and it guides us to the light, peace and togetherness. The writings which are planned to be written on the Timeless Skin were planned to be collected by the families of the people who died on October 10, 2015. The world view of the person who lost his/her life or the words which their family or relatives said after them will take place on the Timeless Structures, trees, groundcovers and more. Also, the existing groundcover pavements will be preserved, it will act as a continuation of the groundcover designed in the area. Thus, Memorial Square will continue to keep the traces from that day.

PROBLEM?...

GRADUATION PROJECT Socio-Ecological Valleys of Mardin NICHES OF SAVUR 2019 - 2020 Fall
55
MAIN IDEA
Economic growth and ecological problems that world faces recently, causes a series of change in social and cultural life in Savur - Mardin. However, locals in Savur mostly protect their way of life because of their strong bond to their family or ‘’aşiret’’ and respect to past. In this half protected environment of Savur there are some tangible examples that couldn’t overcome the economic and ecologic changes. These are called: ‘’Niche‘’ The main aim of the project is to emphasize these niches and find a better way to deal with the current condition of Savur.
NICHES ------- PROPOSALS
56
57
NEW PEASANTRY APPROACH In Savur economic concerns, government policies, laws and ECOLOGIC COOPERATIVE AND FAMILY FARMING regulations are frustrate farmers. Farmers are alienated from nature and lose their vast knowledge about how to yield. In these circumstances a new way of peasantry model should be created. New peasantry is a sustainable rural development model when compared to industrial agriculture. It aims to use less input and use natural energy flow and natural methods in agricultural activities
SCHEMA OF NEW PEASANTRY
A sustainable cycle
It consists of: -Permaculture activities planting various species -Natural ways to cope with pesticides -Family farming and local cooperation -Seed swaps between farmers -Usage of natural resources -Ecological Cooperatives -Using crop rotation
58
Collaboration of scientists, environmentalists and farmers are essential in the new peasantry. An app called ‘‘from producer to consumer’’ aims to deliver the products directly to consumer without wholesalers and middleman. Especially younger generation of a family is responsible to use this app.
At the end of the production cycle products are delivered directly from producer to consumer. In the app, any farmer that practice ecological agriculture in Turkey can use this app to sell his/her own products.
59
SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL METHODS INTERCROPPING Defined as growing two or more crop types on one field INTERCROPPING TREES WITH CROPS
60
COVERCROPS Cover crops are crops to provide ground cover, protect soil and increase soil organic matter grown outside of the normal growing season.
NATURAL WAYS TO OVERCOME PESTS
CROP SPECIES, PESTS AND PREDATORS
Intercropping methods enhance the relation and biodiversity between animals and plants. After deciding which crops to grow in Mardin, pest of every crop, predators of this pests and host plants for these predators are determined. Planted crops are chosen by considering these relations between crop, pest and predator.
61
HARVESTING WATER WITH DYKES In Savur watertable level is decreasing because of insufficient precipitation and redundant usage of water resources. In recent years it is getting worse especially in dry seasons. So it is getting harder to maintain water for agricultural activities. For well functioning agricultural activities, drought problem should be solved not only in Savur but also in surrounding villages like BaĹ&#x;kavak and Dereiçi. Collecting water on the hilly surface with dykes lead watertable to increase in time. So that in proper fields, agricultural activities may practised.
Normally in slopped land there is surface water runoff. This method aims to collect this runoff water gradually with small dykes before it evaporates. In time, water that is collected in catchment areas is absorbed by soil and watertable level is increased.

DYKE SYSTEM IN YEARS In Mardin dominant wind direction is North. Dykes are situated in west - east direction. Therefore, when wind blows from north through south soil started to accumulate at the bottom of the dykes. Dykes are act as obstacle on the ground and in time they become natural water collector from the surface.
After a certain time, specifically wind, precipitation and external factors ease the formation of the dykes. At the end all the dykes around Savur, Dereiçi and BaĹ&#x;kavak are become an integrated part of nature and work as a water table level booster. 65
DYKES AS LANDART
Dykes are basically made out of natural stone. Joints of the dykes are mixed with luminous pigments and colored pigments. In the night the atmosphere of the village will be attractive with the effect of glowing dykes. In the day colorful dykes are continue to grab attention.
66
500 PLAN DEREICI SILENT VILLAGE In Dereiรงi,due to the returning of local residents in summer, agricultural activities are carried out in summer. Other times, winter annual cover crops are used to keep the soil healthy and moist. In spring, Dereiรงi will be host vippasana yoga camp. Max 15-20 people will spend 1-2 weeks in the village. Participants are not allowed to talk during the day. Every individual spent time by her/his own. TREES + DYKES In the dyke system, trees and dykes work together when collecting water. After rain, water started to run down to the slopy hill. Dykes that are placed to the every 5 meters are the first ob tacle to slow down the water flow. Trees that are in the same level and alignment with dykes are the complementary component to the absorption of water to the ground.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN IV Post Production of Post Industrial Landscape İzmir Sümerbank Basma Factory and Meles Delta engeBELİ 2018 - 2019 Fall
71
THE CHARACTER OF THE IZMIR CITY In this project, there are short term and long term goals. In short term,to give a character and identity to the meles river and delta is aimed in order to make more accessible and livable environment in Ä°zmir. In long term it is aimed to create mixed-use urban waterfront and cityscapes that are resilient to global warming and sea level rise as much as possible and making the people to be a part of these situations.
72
MAIN IDEA
3m water level rise
Today, global temperature is already 1 degree and on its way to become 1 .5 degree by 2050. In this project the approach is based on the 3m and 5m water level rise by 2050 and 2120. The aim is to form necessary cityscapes which are resilient to sea level rise and global warming.
engeBELİ
a barrier for rising water level When water level rises 5 meters a few small islands appear in the coastline of İzmir and in some inner areas of İzmir. The main idea is creating an obstacle in front of the sea base on the alignment of these islands. It will work as a barrier for rising water.

HISTORICAL PENINSULA In Istanbul’s Historical Peninsula, the land walls and its surroundings and the vicinity of Sßleymaniye and Zeyrek mosque are protected by Unesco in addition to Sultanahmet. Although these areas have a lot of historical and cultural importance, the landwalls do not attract the attention they should receive. Although the transportation possibilites not limited, the interest of the local people and the tourists is limited. There are non-functional areas along the landwalls. At this point, including some areas in the historical peninsula, collaborative projects and activities will be carried out to attract the attention of people,
84
MAIN IDEA As a main approach, multi-functional designs will be made in multi-layered areas where people from many different beliefs and cultures once live and leave their traces and structures that previously was a church and later became a mosque or a museum.

EDİRNEKAPI In Edirnekapı there are a mosque(Mihrimah Sultan) and bath from the Ottomans, also a Greek Orthodox church(Ayios Yergios), The neighbourhood once hosted Armenians, Greeks and finally Turks. This diversity is reflected in the experience. With the conquest of Istanbul, Armenians were settled in Edirnekapı. The Greeks who lived in Edirnekapı until 60 years ago were displaced during the September 6-7 events. Today, Edirnekapı has a Turkish-Muslim population. In other words the area should reflect this multi layered characteristics.
