A New Year and a New Term 2019

H

appy New Year to all of our Bangkok Patana School Community!

I do hope you had an enjoyable Christmas break and had lots of valuable family time. The Mills family had a fabulous Christmas/New Year catching up with Jake in Australia. We based ourselves mainly in Melbourne, sampling vegan restaurants at St Kilda Beach and checking out a few universities for Toby. We then did a road trip down to a lovely beach town a couple of hours south of Melbourne called Lorne which was a great recommendation from Jason Cooper! The shocking immense bush fires in Australia are alarming and my heart goes out to the hundreds of families that have been affected losing treasured family homes and, very sadly, some very brave volunteer firefighters have lost their lives…….

Happy Birthday Greta! As I write this article it is Greta Thunberg’s 17th birthday! She is Time Magazine’s Person of the Year 2019, which I personally think is justly deserved. It is unusual to have teens telling adults what they’ve done wrong on a global scale; however, I have given my life to education and nothing makes me prouder than observing young students saying enough is enough - we are doing things wrong and we have to make drastic changes as soon as we possibly can to save our beloved planet. In my opinion, Greta is not a cliché or a 5-minute wanna be. She is real, she is passionate, and she is cracking the whip because so many people are going around in circles with their heads in the sand dealing with climate change. With my educator’s hat on, I have observed a profound impact on my students as they can relate to Greta and believe in her as a driving voice for Generation Z and Millennials who have had enough, they want real change. I predict more teens and younger students are going to take Greta’s lead and be brave and stand up for causes that need caring, decisive, positive change. One final point, I’m also cognisant of the fact that there are other teens already speaking out on just causes but have not had the enormous media attention that Greta has experienced both positively and negatively. Happy Birthday Greta, you are certainly my 2019 hero no doubt.

Keeping the Focus is Key: Term 2 will go by very fast which is always normal in international schools following on from a very long Term 1. For those parents who have children in either Year 11 or 13, it is a critical time for students to stay absolutely focused and keep a consistent eye on their key tasks and targets as their external examinations loom ever closer. Actually, research shows that at this time of the academic year can be a time for students to start to lose focus and their efforts can start to slacken. It is an important time of the year for parents to give their children that extra bit of support, give lots of praise and generally help them keep up to date and on track. Believe me, it will all be so worth it once the academic year concludes. Sally Flint and Lorraine Illing wrote a fabulous book on being an IB parent. We have many copies available in our library.and memorable school shows, what an early Christmas treat!

Admissions: On the Admissions front, Rachel Jones, our Head of Admissions, informs me that we have a total of 52 new students enrolled to start in Term 2, 2020 with a grand total of 2,260 students attending our school. A very warm welcome to all of our new students and families that are joining us this term and we all hope you have a very positive learning experience at our amazing school. On Monday 6th January, we had an orientation arranged for our new starters and we had 36 Primary students in the morning and 16 new Secondary students arrive in the afternoon. They got to meet their teachers/ Heads of year, be shown around their learning environments and complete admissions formalities ready to start school on the Tuesday. The new students seem to have settled in well to their new learning environ and have started to make new friends already, which is so important.

Recruitment:

It’s that time of the year again when the Principals and myself start to focus on making sure we fill all of our teaching vacancies for the next academic year. Currently we have 16 Primary vacancies, 14 Secondary vacancies and two Cross Campus vacancies. We have already made some early appointments. Mr Cooper, Mr Smith and I will fly to London this coming Friday where we will interview top quality candidates from the UK and Europe. We have also conducted a number of interviews at school interviewing local candidates based in South East Asia. While we are in London, we will also take the opportunity to visit some top schools and universities and will host our annual Alumni event on Saturday 18th January.

Committed or Commitment? Being a teacher in the 21st Century is a very challenging task! It demands a broad knowledge of subject matter, curriculum and standards, enthusiasm, a caring attitude and a love of learning; a passion for working with highly motivated students, having an ongoing desire to up skill with modern technology tools that are ever changing and an intrinsic desire to make a difference in the lives of young people. When we are interviewing prospective teachers to join Bangkok Patana we are looking for all of the above; passionate professionals that are willing to go over and beyond to make sure that our students really do reach their full potential as Global 21st century learners. Helen Thew will be Acting HOS during my absence and I will be back in my office on Monday 27th January.

Clean, Healthy Air Throughout Bangkok Patana School: Now that we are experiencing poor air quality in Bangkok as we start back to school in January ,I wanted to remind everyone that over the summer, we completed a full whole school fit out of pre-cooled fresh air filter systems, with Merv 14 filters so even when we experience poor air quality days in January, our students will be breathing clean air inside the school buildings. A reminder to new parents that we do have a detailed Air Quality Policy here that we adhere to strictly and is always available to check the daily updates on the parents/students/staff dashboards.

Great Educational Articles to Share: I came across this very short YouTube video on The Power of the ‘Story’ which I found so pertinent and powerful at the same time. Enjoy!

Have a nice warm weekend here in sunny Bangkok as I head off to Blighty and the cooler climes of London. Best wishes, Matt Mills Head of School

Teenworks Raises Funds Over the Holidays Hang Ching J. Kanjanapas, 10G

T

eenworks have been supporting Lutheran Christian Foundation (LCF), a community in Thailand, with the goal of giving children from underprivileged families a better future for about a year now. Before this, we had a bake sale, visited the kids in Home of Praise, taught in Nan with different LCF kids and set up a second hand thrift store online with proceeds going straight to the children. So, as a New Year’s gift, we held another bake sale at Phrom Phrong BTS Station on 3rd January because the last one was so successful. For this particular event, the organisation was done by us teens without parental help. This included the venue, recipes, ingredients, sponsors and more. Overall, we think it was a really successful bake sale because we raised THB 44,844 for them. I think I speak for everyone in Teenworks when I say that it was a bit more difficult than last time even though we held a similar bake sale last year. However, that's because for the plan, we had to do everything ourselves and make sure we didn’t miss anything. We also had to bake without help from a professional chef; last time we had help from Michelin Star Chef Andy Yang from the restaurant Table 38. Despite the fact that we found the preparation hard, the actual bake sale and drawing people in to donate something in exchange for a treat was pretty easy. I think it’s because we learnt from last time who to go up to and who would definitely just walk away. It was again a really good experience and a nice way to finish off our Christmas break and to start our New Year.

Year 5 Bring, Buy and Bake sale raises over THB 70,000 Y

ear 5 students raised THB 70,522 last term in their Bring, Buy and Bake Sale.

Students organised donations of second hand goods, baked cookies and cakes to sell in school at the end of Term 1. The money raised by Year 5 students will go to building water wells for villages in Cambodia.

Sign Up for New Dance Classes Tamara Spalding, Cross Campus Head Dance and Drama Coach

O

ur anticipated Dance Extravaganza is right around the corner, so we encourage all dancers to get their dancing shoes and choreography ready and sign up for Block 3 Dance ECA’S!!

We have introduced three new dance classes to Block 3 which are fun and exciting for all dance students. We now offer Street Jazz which is a technique of fusing traditional jazz with street and commercial dance. It’s mostly popular in music videos and pop songs seen on the charts. K-pop is a popular style that has fusions of hip hop, pop and R&B originating from South Korea. And finally, we have Lyrical Contemporary Dance which takes aspects of ballet and jazz combined using techniques focusing on releases, contractions, extensions, turns and floor work. This is a very graceful style of dance. Dance and Drama Academy will also be offering new Drama classes for Block 3 which will keep students engaged and entertained. We have introduced “Sing and Act along” for our Year 1-3 students. This ECA will be based on a theme where the class will be able to sing and act along to a popular song or story. This will help the students developing social skills, working in groups and drama skills preparing them for Primary productions in Year 4-6. We will also be offering a class called Masked Theatre for Year 4-6 where they use props and masks developing characterization. Students will explore physical theatre in a fun and creative way. and lastly, we have added two new Glee clubs for Year 4-6 and Secondary students who love to sing and act. Registration for Block 3 Phase 2 sign up opens Monday 13th January and closes Thursday 16th January. We look forward to seeing faces new and old!

MasterChef Junior Winning Meal by Year 9 Student Y

ear 9 student Parima (Manta) Sinhaphalin took home the MasterChef Junior Thailand prize over the holidays, winning the title for MasterChef Junior Thailand Season 2. Her winnning meal was a delightful mix of Southern Thai food and Western food; dish of risotto khua khling, sea bass and prawns and her dessert of sticky toffee pudding, ice cream and Earl Grey tea crumble with a Thai twist; young coconut shoots cooked in coconut milk with lemongrass. The results looked delicious! Parima held up well under the pressure of the final, coming through in the crunch for the win. Congratulations! 10/01/2020

Get Your Skates On! Duncan Ferguson, Year 6 Teacher

A

number of students from Bangkok Patana participated in the first ever Bangkok International Schools’ In-Line Skate Competition, organised by BKK Skating School and held at St Andrews 107. There were over 70 students from the participating schools; Bangkok Patana, St Andrews 107, Bangkok Prep, St Andrews Sathorn, BCISB, Ruamrudee and Singaporean International School, all schools which benefit from ECA provision by BKK Skating School. The following students participated for Bangkok Patana: Torres Chou 4D, Daniel Ferguson 4A, Marlon Ferguson 2L, Yuveer Makhni 4H, Anika Partridge 4K, Timon Song 3K, Yumi Sugimoto 4L, Bowie van Veen 4H. It was a fabulous day which started with a demonstration from the pros, who jumped over ramps, danced and performed tricks before students had some time to skate freely and practice their jumps and turns. There were two categories for the individual competition - age six and under, and age seven and over. Following the individual events, there was also a school team relay competition with ‘pass the baton’ style racing. For the individual event, students had to complete an obstacle course against the clock, including skating up and over a ramp, jumping over a bar, weaving through a slalom section and completing lots of tight turns. The fastest 16 participants then competed head to head in knock-out rounds which culminated in the final, a head to head between Daniel from Patana and Reyansh from Ruamrudee. All Patana competitors showed excellent sportsmanship, resilience and determination. Well done to everyone, and especially to Daniel, who won the Over 7 event after an exciting race in the final which was a close fought battle which went right to the wire. Interested Primary students should check out the ECA in Block 3.

Primary Students Join Solar Village Project in Pang Wua Alexander (Coke) Smith, Environmental Systems and Societies Leader

T

hree years ago, Bangkok Patana School established a relationship with Pang Wua Village located in Wiang Haeng District of Chiang Mai Province. In December 2019, 17 Bangkok Patana students and four adults ventured to this remote spot to once again help improve the lives of these Lisu Hilltribe villagers. Pang Wua is located in the very remote mountains outside of Wiang Haeng Village, very close to the Burma border. Several years ago, Coke Smith, Bangkok Patana’s Roots and Shoots Club supervisor, travelled to this remote region, met with the villagers and inquired as to whether or not Pang Wua could use help in achieving electrical power capabilities. Initially he thought that a large solar array would be the answer. However with the help and advice from Jose Luis Martin of Energreen Solar (the solar company that installed all of Bangkok Patana’s arrays and the major donor for this project), we decided to work toward outfitting each house with their own smaller solar panel which can power three lights, a mobile phone charger and a fan. This year our Roots & Shoots students were successful in providing twenty more houses with solar power! Combined with last year’s twenty four, we have just about provided each home in the entire village with solar generated electricity! For this, the entire Bangkok Patana community should feel very proud. This year’s expedition was unique. This was the very first trip that Primary students were also involved. Some two years back, several Primary students started attending the Secondary SEC meetings hoping to bring back knowledge, expertise and energy to their Primary SEC meetings. And to everyone’s surprise, they continued being regular members of the Secondary SEC Roots & Shoots group ever since. Once they learned about the Solar Village trip, they of course wanted to be part of it. The Primary SEC students then met with Primary Principal, Mr Jason Cooper, and pleaded their case early in Term 1. Since no such Cross Campus trip of this nature had ever been undertaken, there was a lot to consider. And after much consultation between Secondary and Primary leadership and other concerned parties, they were allowed to join the trip and partake in Bangkok Patana’s first truly Cross Campus service trip. As the group leader, I was absolutely amazed and impressed with how much our students got involved in the installation of the solar panels in the homes of our Lisu friends at Pang Wua. They consulted with the house owner as to the appropriate placement of the solar panel as well as how to position all of the lights and battery.

All of our students were also very sensitive and attentive to the stark cultural differences they experienced and made it a point to respect the owner’s wishes for their new solar power gear. They were impressed with how simple the housing was in the village and how few material possessions the villagers had. They were equally touched with how friendly and genuinely thankful the villagers were for our students’ contribution to their lives. After installing the twenty new homes with solar power, we all enjoyed a great feast of Kwey Teaw Doi (Hilltribe noodles). We all learned so much with our cultural exchange with the Lisu tribe members. I have no doubt the students will remember this trip for a lifetime. I know that the students who travelled on this expedition returned with a sense of great self-satisfaction for helping improve the lives of others and also a strong respect for service to others. I honestly think that these young people will grow in to adults who make this sort of experience a part of their own lives in the future and make helping others part of who they are.

UNI COUNSELORS’ CORNER WORK EXPERIENCE:

Henry Chandler, 12N

F

or my work experience I worked at the TV channel ‘The Nation’. I was working in the video editing department where my job was to make a video about my boss’s project “Friendly Design”. The aim of his project is to make Thailand a friendly place for everyone, including the disabled, handicapped and people of all ages. The biggest highlight was being able to have my own responsibilities and to walk around the offices giving updates to my co-workers about what tasks have been completed and how successful they have been. For example my video interview with a Nation TV presenter who also works as a Bangkok Patana swimming coach. Another highlight was to work in a real recording studio where I created a voiceover of a video I made about friendly design. I found being social with people in the work area was exciting but a professional job as I am enthusiastic about meeting new people. I discovered that I am even more confident in meeting new people and that I have a great sense of humour, when I was making jokes with my coworkers about our ways of eating and what types of food we like. After having an amazing experience at ‘The Nation’ one of my aspirations it to become a TV presenter for a news channel.

#140: New Year’s Resolutions and Email Zen A t the recent PTG Tech Talk we discussed some of the ways in which we can achieve the magical ‘zero inbox’ status. I’m not a believer in New Year’s Resolutions, but, perhaps for the month of January, every time an email comes into your inbox that does not add value, rather than delete it, take a few seconds to scroll to the bottom of the email and click the (usually small and greyed-out) unsubscribe button.

Just think of the ‘one-less-email’ you’ll regularly receive, not to mention the reduction in carbon dioxide added to the environment. We also explored the wonders of advanced search (see below) and other tips to save valuable seconds in our lives.

Look out for the next PTG Tech Talk on the 5th February. Have a great weekend. Brian Taylor Assistant Principal, Campus Curriculum Technology Integration Brian Taylor is our resident technology pantomath (we call him a guru but he’s not keen on that word apparently!). The first Wednesday of every month you can find him in the PTG Room from 8:00 - 9:00am to answer any tech queries and offer advice and support on parenting in this digital age. Also keep your eyes peeled for his amazing parent workshops. If you have any questions that can’t wait until Wednesday 5th February, please email him on brta@patana.ac.th.
