That's Rubbish! St. Brigid’s Primary School Helping Reduce Landfill

St. Brigid’s Primary School won the Minister's Award in the 2022 NSW Sustainability Awards.

What started as an effort to reduce their waste developed into a whole school environmental action plan.

They realised the school was drowning in rubbish! Upon investigation, it was sadly identified that the school was contributing 23 x 240 litre bins a week to landfill.

To address this crisis, they created an action plan for change. What started as an effort to reduce waste developed into a whole school environmental action plan.

They purchased new bins and implemented a radical new sorting system which separates our playground waste into recycling, cans and bottles, and landfill.

In the classroom they are sorting their glue sticks and pens for recycling, and they have initiated plans to overhaul our canteen waste. In the gardens, they are building a habitat for butterflies and bees and composting their scraps.

Initially, this was driven by their Year 6 students, however this has now changed and they now have the whole school involved.

Not only have we halved our landfill contribution, but we have also changed behaviours!
