As we come into the season of spring and the weather warms up I have plenty of exciting news to share with our members. It is also a good time to visit the club with attractive events and activities for you and your family, not to mention the exciting new menus in our dining venues that will reflect produce that is seasonal and fresh. Our auditorium, the ‘Showroom’, has been one of our most popular and well utilised venues that has remained untouched for many years. The Board thought that it was time we gave this venue a much needed facelift. The old ‘Showroom’, now launched as ‘The Theatre’ promises to deliver a very different and certainly an improved entertainment experience for our patrons. In response to changing needs and expectations, ‘The Theatre’ will feature tiered style seating, so that everyone has a better view of the stage. Special ergonomically-designed seats have been provided with plenty of personal space and legroom. Efforts have been made to take advantage of the good acoustics in the venue by complementing it with a new state of the art sound system that should provide crisp, clear sound quality. As we approach the festive season, do not forget to book early for the children’s Halloween Dance Party, Melbourne Cup, the Christmas Kids’ Show and our famous New Year’s Eve dance and entertainment extravaganza, in The Grand Ballroom.

The Greenfield Station Bistro is another outlet that is very popular, with young and old alike. We decided to give our Bistro a face lift without disrupting regular service. While this approach asked for your patience and understanding I am happy to say that all the work is near to completion and soon you should be able to benefit from quicker, easier and more efficient service, in surroundings that are bright and more comfortable. Your club is an intrinsic part of this community and has been dedicated to the cause ever since we began operations 57 years ago. In addition to supporting 43 local sporting clubs and assisting a variety of schools and community groups, both in cash and in-kind, the ClubGRANTS program is a significant activity each year that requires some mention. In Bankstown we are represented on the Local ClubGRANTS Committee comprising of 11 clubs. The Committee comprises of representatives from all the participating clubs, the Department of Family & Community Services and a representative of the Council of Social Service of New South Wales and Bankstown City Council. Applications are invited from community groups that fit within a list of priorities drawn from Bankstown City Council’s Social Plan. This year the Committee received 130 requests for funding to cover projects that required a total of $1,923,423. The Committee devoted considerable time, assessing each application and then

recommended 71 projects for approval. From the contributions made by the participating clubs the pool of available funds was $889,587. This year the annual cheque presentation event was held at the Revesby Workers’ Club and I was pleased to see that it was well attended. Bankstown Sports contributed $426,000 and you might be interested to know that we funded 41 different projects. In Baulkham Hills we are part of the Hills Shire Local ClubGRANTS Committee. The Hills Shire committee received 77 applications for $539,000. 19 applications were funded for a total of $95,000 with our Baulkham Hills Club picking up 5 projects totalling $24,568. Over the last 10 years your club has contributed a total of $20 million to the local community. As a family and community club, we see this as more than an obligation. With your ongoing support we hope that we can continue these efforts.

community Formed by the community for the community and continues to give back in a multitude of ways. Visitors to our club are often astonished by its size, the amazing facilities, the bright lights and the variety of entertainment and food on offer – without a doubt a local beacon. But underpinning the impressive infrastructure of our club are the deeply held values which bind the club to the community. Chief Executive Officer Mark Condi describes our club as being the fabric of the community – woven together and completely intrinsic to this neighbourhood. So, when the new financial year begins, the club’s management and Board eagerly anticipate the annual ClubGRANTS cheque presentation, held this year on July 31. “It’s where we demonstrate our commitment to people of all backgrounds in our community, which is one of the most culturally diverse in the country. Bankstown is also one of the most exciting places to be,” says Mark Condi.

This year, the Bankstown Local ClubGRANTS Committee, which is made up of representatives from 11 participating clubs, the Department of Family & Community Services, NCOSS and Bankstown City Council spent two days assessing 130 submissions from community organisations, seeking a total of $1,923,423 in funding. The Committee recommended 71 projects be approved this year, totalling $889,587. Bankstown Sports Club, Birrong Sports Club and Bankstown Sports Bowls has given $426,000 in funding to 41 local organisations (see page 6), which is 47.9% of the total funding pool, and an increase on last year’s funding. The other local clubs providing funding include Revesby Workers’ Club, Bankstown RSL, Bass Hill RSL, Bankstown Trotting & Recreation, Chester Hill Bowling & Recreation, Mt Lewis Bowling, Panania Diggers and Padstow RSL.

According to ClubsNSW, last year registered clubs allocated more than $92 million to deserving causes through the ClubGRANTS program. Since the scheme began, about 500 clubs have given close to $1 billion to community organisations such as Surf Life Saving, Vision Australia and Legacy. We have once again funded long-established programs, such as the annual nurses scholarships at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital, Bankstown City Aged Care, the Recreation Sports and Aquatics Club, Punchbowl Boys High and Bankstown City Choir. Some organisations which are new to the list this year include: Saint Charbel’s Youth Association, Bankstown Family History Group and the Dandelion Support Network for babies and children in need. In each case, the organisations are required to report on the outcomes achieved through the funding and InTouch magazine features many of these stories throughout the year.

Villawood Arabic Women’s Group program changes lives

Punchbowl Boys High School

The group, which meets weekly, has been able to pay for effective communication workshops, yoga, aqua aerobic classes, massage and women’s health checkups. Community Development Officer at Woodville Community Services, Mira Mitrovic, says there has been a notable increase in self-confidence among the group’s 16 to 20 participants. “We have noticed more confidence in the women’s ability to communicate more generally and in their general life satisfaction and happiness,” Mira says. The women’s feedback to the program has been extremely positive. “One woman told us ‘Everything changes for me … all week I wait for Friday to come.’ Another said ‘It releases life’s stresses and makes me happy.’”

Supporting parents as Leaders in our local schools According to the Bankstown Community Resource Centre (BCRC), many migrant parents adjusting to life in Australia can often feel reluctant to get involved at school and feel left out. To counter this, the BCRC has set up the Parents As Leaders Sharing program. Working with Yagoona and Georges Hall Primary Schools, the program boosts family involvement at school and builds parent leadership skills. It is envisaged these new skills will also be transferred to the home environment and the local community through better communication and empowerment of those involved.

Our support of these two leading organisations led to two awards in the ClubsNSW Clubs & Community Awards in May. We won in the Youth Category for our ongoing partnership with Punchbowl Boys High School’s Students At Risk program which has not only prevented students from dropping out of school but has increased HSC completion.

The program has supported more than 200 students through $24,700 in grants over six years. Due to the success of the program, the school is looking to continue its work with at-risk students. The program will be provided further funding of $7,900, which will help students to attend an intensive workshop to foster team work, strengthen character and open lines of communication between the students.

In 2013, Gillawarna Village at Bankstown City Aged Care, was in need of 50 extra sprinklers after the NSW Government passed laws requiring all beds in aged care facilities to have sprinklers installed. We contributed $100,000 to fund the work. “Without this money Bankstown City Aged Care would have been forced to borrow money from the bank to fund the installation and we would have had to employ less staff. Now we can fully maintain our level of care for our residents thanks to this contribution,” says the CEO of Bankstown City Aged Care, Terry Madden. We were highly commended in the Outstanding Regional Initiative Category of the ClubsNSW Clubs & Community Awards for the continued support of the facility. This financial year, with another $100,000 contribution from the club, Gillawarna Village will be able to complete an urgent upgrade to the air conditioning for 160 residents in the dementia day care and the high care unit. The $100,000 grant is the final payment of a $500,000, 5-year commitment made to Bankstown City Aged Care.

renovation funding A major renovation at Disability Services Australia’s Condell Park factory is in full swing, thanks to funding support from the ClubGRANTS program.

Disability Services Australia (DSA) supports more than 300 people with a disability in the Bankstown area to live a full life. This is achieved a number of ways, through employment, day programs, accommodation support, transitionto-work for school leavers, and specialist intervention for people with challenging behaviours. The renovation project at DSA’s Condell Park Disability Enterprise factory will completely revamp the disabled, male, and female bathrooms, and two kitchen/canteen areas. We have contributed $39,183 to the project. “More than 10 per cent of the factory’s employees have mobility restrictions, so these improvements will ensure their workplace remains a safe, fully accessible, supportive and inclusive environment,” says DSA’s Community

Engagement Manager, Heather Macrae. “In total about 150 people with disabilities will have a better day-to-day working experience.” The renovation is part of a larger project that includes improvements to the factory’s loading and dispatch areas, and weather-proof access to outdoor areas for staff. The renovation will not only benefit the people with a disability employed at the factory, it will also provide a positive flow-on affect for their families and carers through regular on-site social activities aimed at improving their health and wellbeing. “The extra benefit for the carers will be the opportunity to meet others with similar life experiences and forge ongoing connections to support each other,” says Heather. “Sometimes people become socially isolated. With our new facilities we can provide a venue for better support and information sharing.” “Disability Services Australia is committed to ensuring that what is important to each person, and what is important for them, governs the design of all we do.” The renovation is expected to be completed in early December.

With renovations completed at the end of August, the Showroom has made way for The Theatre. Delivering a vastly improved experience for patrons with a better view of the stage, comfortable seats and a superior sound system.

In comparison to the Showroom, The Theatre will feature a superior level of comfort. Instead of tables and chairs, which surveyed patrons have described as cramped and difficult to move around, The Theatre will

have rows of ergonomically-designed tiered seats with plenty of personal space and leg room. “Tiered style seating means the stage can be seen clearly regardless of where people sit and not only will the audience be able to see more, they will also be able to hear more with the installation of a superior audio system providing a crisp, clear sound,” says Bankstown Sports Chief Executive Officer, Mark Condi. As Father’s Day approaches on September 7, InTouch spoke with local hockey dads who are combining the joys of family and sport on the field. It’s not every day that you hear about a father following in his children’s footsteps, but that is exactly how hockey sticks ended up in the hands of these two sporty families. At the Bankstown Sports Hockey Club, family comes first and fathers Graeme Barnard, now Club President, and John Alderton, VicePresident, knew this was the right environment for their children to thrive in. Graeme’s son Jordan led the way, joining the club when he was eight followed soon after by sister Jessica. The siblings, now 20 and 22 respectively, still play at the club – Jordan in top side men’s Sydney League 3 and Jessica in Metro League 6 – and last year Graeme joined them too.

“I was very involved in the club as a parent, but other commitments stopped me from being able to play,” Graeme says. Though his story might not be typical, in fact it’s the opposite of many at the club, Graeme says getting the whole family involved was encouraged and has resulted in many father-son combinations. “There are also a number of families that now have a third generation playing, which is really great to see and that welcoming, family atmosphere is really something we foster at the club,” he said. “I think we’re pretty unique in that we are a club that caters for all ages, and that inclusion probably helps the family

atmosphere, which makes it enjoyable for everyone to be involved.” Though he plays in a lower grade than Jordan, Graeme admits they both have a little competitive streak. “I have played with Jordan on a couple of occasions. We are both forwards, so when we play on the same side we do get to work together, which is great,” he said. “Even though we are in different grades, we are both goal scorers so we do keep a tally of goals scored; though Jordan is way out in front of me, but little things like that do keep it fun.”

With younger son Riley keen to step on the pitch alongside his dad, John is looking forward to playing hockey for a few more years yet. So committed to the sport they love, the Alderton family have even made time for hockey on Father’s Day. “We do spend Father’s Day with family, though in the past few years we have spent the morning at rep trials for the boys, so it’s been hockey for the first part of the day but home with family for the rest of the day.”

Also introduced to hockey by his children, John Alderton has been involved with the club for six years after his sons Cooper, now 14, and Riley, 10, showed interest after playing a backyard game with family friends. John and Cooper play on the same team, the men’s SL6 (Sydney League 6), a rare sporting opportunity that few dads would get to experience. “Cooper leaves me for dead!” John says with a laugh. “He is a much better player than I am, but it is really great to have that opportunity to play alongside him, it is a proud moment for me.”

Bon appétit at the bistro! With recent renovations delivering an improved experience, InTouch Editor Sue Nelson set her compass for Greenfield Station Bistro to explore the new menu. My first thought on approaching Greenfield Station Bistro with my family for dinner are the giant chairs, sitting just outside, that look so comfy. The benefit of this, Chief Executive Officer Mark Condi tells me, is that everyone’s food arrives at the same time – so your group will all have hot food arriving together – an improvement for sure.

Greenfield Station Bistro has just had a facelift and introduced a new menu, so it was time for a test drive.

Incidentally, my son, who is a maths nut, tells me the benefits of forming one queue to order, rather than several, have been proven mathematically to be faster for everyone. Something to remember while you are adjusting to the change.

One thing members will notice straight away is the change of layout for ordering and collecting food. You now take your time to review the menus, which are conveniently located on each table and displayed on giant lit screens on the right of the bistro. Also located on the right is where you order and collect a pager.

You also now collect your food in the centre of the bistro which is lit by heat lamps – and the beverage bench, for water, tea and coffee, is on the left side.

Now, to the food. For a nuclear family comprising a big meat-eater, a vegetarian, a gluten-free person and a seafood lover, surprisingly we found options to cover all appetites. The menu has a couple of excellent tasting plates, recommended to us by Executive Chef, Helmut Gundendorfer. There’s the Mediterranean Tasting Plate ($29) containing chicken souvlaki, haloumi, warm zatar olives, prawn skewers, chorizo, baby squid, tzatziki, a mini Greek salad and pita bread, and then there’s the Seafood Tasting Plate ($35) featuring a grilled fillet of salmon, marinated prawn skewers, grilled scallops, salt and pepper squid, Spencer Gulf mussels in a chilli tomato sauce, a garden salad and homemade tartare. We chose the Seafood Tasting Plate and, for two or four people, it’s a great way to start the meal. The mussels in tomato and chilli sauce were a particular standout and none of it lasted long! For mains, we really mixed it up, choosing from across the menu. First a delicious and great value-for-money Mediterranean Roasted Vegetable Stone-Fired Pizza ($13.90) featuring pumpkin, capsicum, tomatoes, mushrooms, Spanish onions, Kalamata olives, rocket and feta. This is a vegetarian option which really delivers, providing loads of flavour and, unlike some vego dishes, plenty of vegetables.

Our meat-lover was very satisfied with his choice from the USA burgers and ribs part of the menu. His BBQ Pork Ribs and Steak dish ($33) featured a grain-fed porterhouse steak cooked medium-rare and served on a hot stone with chips, salad and a horseradish sauce. With a grunt of approval coming from the corner, I knew it hit the spot and the single chip I managed to pilfer before it was hoovered into oblivion was perfect for that cold, winter night. From the Mediterranean section of the menu came a much-desired Prawn Linguini Pasta ($12 small) with cherry tomatoes, chilli, rocket, parsley, white wine, olive oil, oregano and shaved pecorino. The prawns were both generous and sumptuous, nestled as they were in their bed of cheesy, fine pasta.

Finally, from the taste of Asia menu, came the Thai Green Curry Prawns ($22) with sugar snap peas, baby corn, bean sprouts, coriander and steamed rice. This covered off the gluten-free requirement and was a light and healthy meal. There is much more to choose from, including the sections called Viva La Mexico, Schnitzels and other Club Favourites, Ocean Fresh Seafood, From the Grill and Gourmet Salads – not to mention the Breads and Sweet Things. It’s a veritable feast! As we dabbed at the corners of our mouths and contemplated another wine, water and cider, I knew exactly what I needed to do next. Find a big comfy chair and hang.

to Marianne The secret to a long life is all about eating well and good genes according to 100 year old member, Marianne Le Feuvre, who celebrated her milestone birthday at the club. “I had a big party,” she says. “I had 80 guests there and some of my nieces came … they came from Young and Canberra, all over the place. It’s been a wonderful occasion catching up with people I’d grown up with who are now grown up and grandmothers themselves.” Marianne has had a long association with us following on from her time as president and secretary of the Yagoona Women’s Bowling Club. Though she no longer plays bowls, she keeps active by attending social events at the club, gardening and playing piano. A former milliner, Marianne arrived in Australia from England at the age of 10 when

her father was offered a job making Akubra hats and it was his knowledge of the trade that inspired her to join the profession. “We eventually had a shop in Wollongong and another one in the Imperial Arcade and one in the Strand Arcade in the city, so we were kept pretty busy.” The centenarian is now busy keeping up with her large family. A mother of three children with her husband George, who passed away at the age of 73, Marianne has nine grandchildren and an ever-growing number of great grandchildren.

It’s my party! When I was a child, a birthday party generally took place in the home. We’d play musical chairs, pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey, sing Happy Birthday, eat cake and open presents. Not so much nowadays. Each year we seem more compelled to dream up unique party themes and bigger and better ways of celebrating birthdays. Rarely do we stop to consider why we have birthday parties in the first place. Thousands of years ago birthdays were considered a time of great change to a person’s life and, as a consequence, a time when we were vulnerable to possession by evil spirits. It was believed that the only way to keep the evil spirits at bay was to have a celebration with your friends and family around you so that their good wishes and present-giving would keep the evil spirits at bay. Come to think of it, ask any woman over the age of 35 celebrating a birthday and she would attest to the notion that evil spirits definitely play a part in making us a year older! When it comes to celebrating special occasions and birthday rituals we think we have the market cornered with our over-thetop cakes and balloon bouquets, however, if you are looking for a way of making your next birthday devoid of all clichés and outright boredom, why not consider giving some of these ideas a go? Here are few of the more unusual, though rather delightful, birthday rituals from around the world. Starting off in the USA, celebrators in their millions are being swept by a new and undeniably fun craze known as the giving of ‘smash-cakes’. The idea is to simply destroy the cake and make as much mess as your heart desires. Undoubtedly this was created for children; however it is just as much fun for adults … maybe even more so.

Over in the UK, or more specifically Ireland and England, the annual birthday ritual known as the “bumps” has been practiced for generations. Thankfully this is not a nasty medical condition as the name may suggest. It involves picking up the lucky birthday person by their arms and legs, and bumping them on the floor for each year of their age. The reverence for this particular practice rather diminishes with age, for obvious reasons. A long-standing tradition in Canada is the practice of birthday nose-greasing, which, as the name suggests, is nothing more complicated than a coordinated attack on the birthday boy or girl, whereby they are pinned to the ground and their nose smeared with butter or other greasy stuff. Apparently, the reason for the buttering is to make the person in question far too slippery for bad luck or negativity to get hold of in the coming year (though given the potential for fun you really don’t need much of a justification). And last but not least, appealing to my macabre sense of humour, has to be this practice common in Switzerland. Like something straight from a disturbing Stephen King horror flick, parents will hire a clown – and not your regular fun-loving clown – an evil clown, one who will menacingly follow and torment that special someone, before eventually finishing them with a pie to the face. Of course, the gesture is again only one of good luck, health and happiness, but I personally cannot think of anything more terrifyingly fun or sinister! I would however recommend trying this one out at your own discretion, in order to avoid a birthday both you and that special someone will never forget for all the wrong reasons. Happy Birthday!

It’s all about dancing, costumes and spooky characters at this year’s Halloween Dance Party. Monster Manor is the place to be this Halloween and kids will get their chance to party with the Skeleton King as well as Frankenstein and his bride at the Halloween Dance Party in The Grand Ballroom on Sunday October 26. The show features Vamperilla, DJ Mr Spooky, magic tricks, prizes for best-dressed children and adults and plenty of dancing! “We’re doing two half hour spots for the children and they really should enjoy it,” says show director, Sandra Fleeton. “We have some great props. A haunted castle backdrop, spider webs and chains and cauldrons … all those sorts of fun things to create the mood. “All the way through the children will be entertained because the costumes will be fabulous and I’m sure the children

will get really involved in the show. It’s a lot of fun for everyone. Even the people putting on the show have a great time.” Modern Halloween celebrations have their roots in the ancient Celtic festival of the dead called Samhain, which marked the end of summer and the harvest. It was believed that spirits could more easily walk among the living at that time so people wore costumes as a disguise. Today Halloween is recognised as an opportunity for fun and sharing treats. “I think this day is a day for the kids to have a bit of fun and it’s good family entertainment,” Sandra adds. Christmas at the club promises to be extra special this year, with special menus at the Greenfield Bistro and Platform One as well as an old fashioned pantomime to thrill the children. On Sunday December 21, bring your children along to watch Santa prepare for Christmas in the show, Santa’s Family Show. Unfortunately for Santa, there is a naughty elf on the loose who is trying to sabotage his efforts to make all the presents and deliver them in time for Christmas. Will Santa and his trusty crew of elves, Rudolph the reindeer and Frosty the Snowman, manage to save Christmas? With songs and dancing by toy soldiers, dolls, elves and fairies, and featuring traditional costumes from Germany, Italy, England, Spain, the United States and Australia, this show will delight everyone. For those wanting to celebrate Christmas in style, our chef-prepared Platform One Christmas Day buffet menu ($155 per adult, $29 kids under 13), allows you to savour heavenly delights, from the farmgate to the sea. Working here at the club is more than a job, as bistro team leader Stella Charet can attest. She discovered the job by chance through a friend, but it’s the great community spirit at here that has kept bistro team leader Stella Charet in her role. She was recently recognised by the club for 15 years of loyal service. Stella has been working in hospitality for more than 20 years, and says it’s the social aspect of her role that she loves.

And while one challenge in hospitality is working while most people are relaxing with friends and family, Stella, who “gets every second Saturday off”, says her role is very rewarding. “There are a lot of great things about this job. At Bankstown, it’s a really great community, the club environment is very welcoming and it’s enjoyable to be around.”

“You get to talk to people every day” she says. “There are wonderful regular customers that come in and love to have a chat”.

Another staff member who has been recognised is Paul Anthony. Paul joined the club in 2012 and readers of InTouch will know he was named Most Valuable Employee of the Year in 2013.

As a team leader, Stella manages 17 staff and, though it has its complications – like juggling a roster - seeing everything run smoothly is a great feeling.

Recently Paul, who has achieved a Diploma of Hospitality, which was funded by the club, was named a regional finalist in the 2014 NSW Training Awards. Congratulations Paul!

It’s Oktoberfest time With Germany having won the World Cup in true style in July, the German nation will likely be celebrating for months. So, our special mini-Oktoberfest at Platform One on September 26 and 27 is a great opportunity to relive the moment and experience all things Deutsch with imported biers (that’s beers in German), amazing food, the atmosphere of a German bier hall, traditional music and traditional costumes (on the staff ). Doubling

our recycling rate In the past year, we have doubled our recycling rate, saving 44% of waste, or 24 tonnes, from going to landfill each month. We take our responsibility to waste management seriously and have worked hard to identify a range of new recycling and reuse opportunities across our club. Our club generates an average of 54 tonnes of waste each month. Chief Executive Officer Mark Condi says, “In order to address the issue as a responsible corporate citizen, the club formed a sustainability committee, which has made some extraordinary achievements in the past year.” The committee comprises a representative from each area of our club and associated venues. It has delivered on the club’s sustainability policy, a roll out of the full recycling program and an increase in staff education and engagement.

“Just 12 months ago, we only recycled cardboard and glass, but through our partnership with Closed Loop Environmental Solutions sustainability consultants, we have added co-mingled waste to our recycling program and now also turn food waste into nutrient-rich compost on-site,” Mr Condi says. The introduction of source-separated bins in all front- and back-of-house areas helps ensure waste that can be recycled doesn’t end up in landfill. The cafe and bistro also have food waste bins in their trolleys, allowing staff to separate waste while cleaning tables. By composting food waste on-site, and donating it to community gardens, we have reduced food waste sent to landfill by 63 per

cent. This change has also resulted in a reduced number of rubbish collections needed, and therefore trucks on the road. Other recycling initiatives include a battery recycling program, printer cartridge recycling in admin areas, shrink wrap recycling in the cellar, and the introduction of new recyclable takeaway cups in the cafe. All shredded paper is donated to the RSPCA at Yagoona. “We have also saved 15% in energy costs. These incredible results have been achieved with the support of the Board and the ongoing positive commitment from all staff across our business to make positive changes to their daily routine and work together to achieve this success,” Mr Condi says.

We will save more than 6.6 per cent on energy costs by installing a new chiller system that is 50 per cent more efficient than the current system.

Bankstown Sports Chief Executive Officer, Mark Condi, said the upgrade to a more energy efficient chiller and cooling tower and the installation of a solar system were part of the club’s continuing improvements and reinforced its commitment to its community and the environment.

As well as the improved chiller, adding solar to Baulkham Hills Sports will also generate savings. Baulkham Hills Sports Club will put an 85kW solar system on its roof which will generate about 10 per cent of the site’s energy needs. CEFC CEO Oliver Yates said the project demonstrated how the CEFC and Commonwealth Bank Energy Efficient Loan finance was supporting community organisations and sporting clubs to reduce their energy costs. “We’re financing community organisations so they can make changes now that will help them save on energy

BAULKHAM HILLS We’re all in this together Children in need and the region’s various cultural groups have the chance to create new services and events thanks to Baulkham Hills Sports Club’s ClubGRANTS program. Baulkham Hills Sports Club has recently provided close to $25,000 in funding to a wide range of community groups in the latest round of its ClubGRANTS program. Five organisations received the financial support on July 8 including the Cerebral Palsy Alliance and the Zonta Club – given $2,839 to provide respite for children with disabilities and $2,500 to prevent youth violence at home, respectively. The Hills Schools Industry Partnership was another beneficiary and will use its $1,025 for an inter-agency website, while Shine for Kids Co-Op plans to allocate its $9,804 grant to support the children of prisoners. The Community Migrant Resource Centre (CMRC) was also given funding through ClubGRANTS to create a cultural awareness

event in the Hills Shire area, to be most likely held at a local high school or TAFE campus. In partnership with the Hills Multicultural Network, the CMRC will showcase the traditional celebrations of various cultural groups living in the region – such as Chinese, the Indian sub-continent and Korean – through display tables, workshops and performances. “It’s good for the wider community to find out who these groups are, how they dress, what festivals they celebrate, what food they have, their stories and aspirations in order to increase cultural awareness and build social networks. We will also be showcasing Australian culture with a focus on Indigenous culture as well,” says Aurelia Rahman, Community Capacity Building Coordinator, CMRC.

“The event is about bringing cultures together to find out about each other and celebrate their commonalities and understand their differences, so it’s a harmony event to generate a better dialogue between the local communities.” Part of the $8,400 grant will be used to produce a video of the event, which will be an awareness or training tool for other agencies, ensuring the benefits of the cultural awareness day extend into the future. “It’s a great opportunity to get this kind of support from the club to assist us … it’s difficult to do an event like this without it and we are very grateful and thankful to Baulkham Hills Sports Club for giving the funding for the project.”

BIRRONG SPORTS With a focus on friendship and community, Birrong Sports Netball Club has stood the test of time to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The uniforms may have changed from a knee-length, box-pleated number with a tassel belt to a more practical straight dress, but Birrong Sports Netball Club’s commitment to friendship and community remains the same 50 years since it began. A celebratory dinner at Bankstown Sports Club on July 12 proved just how well respected the organisation has become. Guests even made the journey from as far as the Central Coast and Wollongong to help honour the club.

“It’s a club that just keeps going,” says Birrong Sports Netball Club secretary and Bankstown City Netball Association president, Lee Hill. “At the dinner we had four tables of current players and ten tables of former players. That tells you what we’re all about – friendship, community and sticking together. “I think the biggest highlight was having all living life members bar two at the dinner. It was pretty amazing.”

At its height, the club had 27 teams but now fields 15. It is committed to being all-inclusive and keen to encourage more Indigenous players to join. “We’re probably the club that has the highest number of Indigenous players per ratio…and we want to encourage Indigenous players because you have to have a mission and we’re 50 years old now and I think it’s time for us now to look at what else we can do for the community,” Lee explains. “As a club we provide umpires on a Saturday, we have a good majority of representative players, we have representative coaches, squad coaches – so for a club of 15 teams we’re a very large presence within our association.” Birrong Netball Club is an active member of Birrong Sports Club, holding its registration days, presentations, grand final after parties and social events there. Baulkham Hills Sports Person of the Year Awards On Friday 11 July, 130 people turned out to celebrate Baulkham Hills Sports Person of the Year Awards at Baulkham Hills Sports Club. The awards recognise the best athletes of the past year in each sporting club supported by Baulkham Hills Sports Club. Amongst the recipients were Ashley Thomas, a member of the U21 NSW Men’s hockey team who currently holds a hockey scholarship with NSW Institute of Sport and Chris Springall, the president of Baulkham Hills Sports Cricket Club, and also the club’s highest run scorer in the last season, scoring 700 runs at an average of 58.33 in the B2 competition.

Baulkham Hills Mayor, Dr Michelle Byrne was amongst the special guests and presented junior sports recipients with their awards in the sports of baseball, cricket, football, hockey and netball. Winter Olympian John Farrow, who finished 17th in the Skeleton event at Sochi earlier this year, treated guests to his inspiring story, filled with determination and adrenalin. In the last year, Baulkham Hills Sports Club has assisted local sporting clubs and community sport with more than $140,000 in funding. Scaling new heights and smashing a 20-year record Bankstown Sports Athletics Club member Jack Hicking has had an outstanding year. After setting a personal best height of 5.05 metres at the Bankstown Invitational Athletics Meet in March this year, the 19-year-old has continued to take records. On June 19, Jack broke the NSW Open (all ages) and record for Under 20s, which had stood for 20 years. He jumped a personal best of 5.26 metres, moving up the national rankings to first in the Under 20 years category, and second in the Opens category.
