About Sports Medicine

Sports medicine is a subspecialty that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. Sports medicine was approved and recognized as a subspecialty in 1992, yet its roots actually date back to the 5th century, when specialized physicians treated athletes for sore muscles and game-related injuries after the Olympics.

Today, sports medicine is for everyone who engages in physical activity even daily walks around the neighborhood. From Little League players to high school, college and professional athletes to active seniors who enjoy pickleball and ballroom dancing, this branch of medicine is for nearly all ages.

SPORTS MEDICINE CARE AND SERVICES FOR UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES

Game On: Injury Prevention Education

Educating young athletes about how to prevent injuries is vital to our mission. The Game On: Young Athletes Injury Prevention Education Fund provides preventative care through three distinct assessments proven to reduce injury and promote participation in sports. Sports physicals, ImPACT Assessments, and Fusionetics performance and injury risk assessment are the gold standard of preventative care for youth athletes. With support from the Game On Fund, Banner Sports Medicine will partner with the Arizona Interscholastic Association and school districts across Arizona to schedule on-site sports physical events as well as plan for a major event in 2022 which aims to attract athletes for a special day of sports medicine and training assessments. Philanthropic partners are essential for this work because of regulatory laws preventing a health care provider from rendering free services.

Patient Assistance Fund

Athletes are the heart of sports medicine. Ensuring all athletes— no matter their economic background have access to leadingedge treatments at Banner Sports Medicine Scottsdale is a vital component of this program designed to serve and care for our communities. Patient assistance funds help qualifying patients with out-of-pocket costs for care and needed services, ensuring that every athlete can receive quality care and support.
