EXPLORE THE WILD, EXPERIENCE THE ART. This year, we are excited to present our 15th edition in a new vertical format. Much like a magazine, inside, you'll fi nd some fabulous and inspiring stories, as well as a profi le of our travel company, Wildscapes Travel.

People often ask why we created a travel company. After traveling for 30 years to truly understand my subjects, exploring how they interact with landscapes, cultures, and humanity itself—I realized that today, we seek more than just a tourist experience. We want to engage ourselves in a place and leave it better than we found it. That’s what Wildscapes Travel offers: authentic, raw adventures with a touch of luxury.

The magic of designing a safari is in understanding our guests and how they and their families will interact with the environment, fi nding the best fi t for them. There are many adventures out there; a quick Google search will show you countless safari and global travel options. But the key is making sure it’s the right fi t—an experience that pushes them to the edge of their comfort zone. We orchestrate these trips like a fi lm, with our guests as the lead characters, building up to a crescendo. When you leave, you should feel like you've experienced more in those days than you ever imagined.

This catalog also showcases our new art releases. Over the past 30 years, I’ve created over 1,400 paintings, yet we release less than 10% as limited editions. This year, we have some exceptional pieces, and the sales of these prints help support our foundation projects, some of which you will see featured within these pages. A big thank you to all our collectors and foundation supporters out there!

We’re also excited to announce a new partnership with Seabourn Cruises, the best in the industry. I wasn’t much of a cruise guy before, but I’ve become one thanks to these expedition ships—they’re like a safari at sea. You can get on and off the boat at any time; you don’t have to commit to 90 days. You can book 7 or 10 days to a port and embark on one of our adventures in any of the countries. I encourage you to take a look and see if it’s the right fi t for your family.

Above all, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your encouragement and inspiration. Your support has been invaluable, and it drives me to continue creating meaningful experiences in art, travel, and conservation. I hope to see you at our upcoming shows, during one of our unforgettable safaris, or perhaps on a global adventure. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being a part of our journey and for your continued support.

ARTIST STATEMENT: IN THE LAND OF GIANTS (COVER PAINTING)

"In the Land of Giants" is a painting that has been years in the making. The idea began in 2009 during my time in Africa's Okavango Delta, where I closely studied elephants at water level. In fact, I even went swimming with them where I was observing their social bonds and familial roles—like a mirror of human relationships.

The inspiration truly took hold in 2019 when I envisioned this painting of an elephant herd emerging from the Mapani Forest and walking into the Kwai River. Though I didn’t see this exact herd, it felt like they were the ones I had been dreaming of, and I knew the painting had to be on a grand scale to reflect the profound experience.

I remember sketching out the concept, working through all the relationships between the elephants, and visualizing how they’d move together through the landscape. This wasn’t just a scene—it was a story about family. The process was intense, with long days spent capturing every wrinkle and detail of the elephants, each telling a story of age and wisdom.

As I painted, I envisioned the elephants stepping out of the shadows, leaving the forest behind and walking into the light. In the painting, they are joined by other species—ringneck doves, an impala herd, woolly-neck storks, dwarf mongooses, and a pair of spurfowl—each adding layers of life and depth. This isn’t just a scene; it’s a story of an extended family of elephants and a world teeming with life and countless stories, all captured in every brushstroke.

I feel deeply privileged to have been commissioned by a wonderful family to create this painting for such a momentous celebratory occasion, honoring the profound experiences that inspired it.

"To paint Africa is to capture the untold tales of its wilderness, where every brushstroke speaks of life’s raw, untamed beauty."

“Africaʼs vast landscapes are more than just a backdrop; they are the very soul of the stories that roam its wild plains."

Grumeti Reserve

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL AND WHY I LOVE IT.

THE GRUMETI RESERVE IS ARGUABLY THE MOST SUCCESSFUL CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION EFFORT IN EAST AFRICA. ITS LOCATION IS VITAL TO THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE GREAT WILDEBEEST MIGRATION, AS THE WILDEBEESTS ENTER AND EXIT THE RESERVE ON THEIR WAY TO KENYA.

GRUMETI RESERVE, TANZANIA

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL AND WHY I LOVE IT

The Grumeti Reserve is arguably the most successful conservation and restoration effort in East Africa. Its location is vital to the sustainability of the Great Wildebeest Migration, as the wildebeests enter and exit the reserve on their way to Kenya. This area marks the final stretch of their long journey north, where they head towards the rains after giving birth in the Southern Serengeti. The Grumeti Reserve lies about three-quarters of the way up to the Maasai Mara, making it the last non-protected area the wildebeests traverse before crossing the border into Kenya.

The Grumeti River is the first major river they encounter in this region. The entire Grumeti area acts as an incubator, ensuring that the wildebeests born five months earlier are strong and well-nourished enough to cross both the Grumeti and the Mara Rivers and continue their journey through the Maasai Mara during July, August, and September. The reserve's location is critical to the success of this migration.

GRUMETI RESERVE

Additionally, the Grumeti Reserve is known to have the densest population of lions within the Serengeti ecosystem. It is a great restoration area for both habitat and wildlife, supporting all the megafauna and prey species that lions rely on—not just during the migration, but year-round, as there are many resident species.

Lastly, the reserve's beauty is unparalleled. It features vast, open grasslands that are visually interrupted by old-growth forests along the Grumeti River. These forests, with ancient fig trees and various sausage trees, provide excellent habitat for leopards, making Grumeti one of the best places in East Africa to see leopards during the daytime. In the Serengeti ecosystem, Grumeti Reserve stands unmatched.

Hwange in Southern Africa A

VITAL CONSERVATION AREA

HWANGE IS PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT HABITAT FOR A MASSIVE POPULATION OF ELEPHANTS - ARGUABLY WELL OVER 100,000 ELEPHANTS THAT USE THAT AREA. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS REGION IS BEYOND ITS CARRYING CAPACITY, AND BOTH BOTSWANA AND ZIMBABWE, PARTICULARLY THE HWANGE REGION, ARE FEELING THE STRAIN.

HWANGE, ZIMBABWE

The Hwange region, along with the Okavango Delta and areas like Chobe, Moremi Game Reserve, and the Chobe River area in Botswana, all face significant pressure. However, the Hwange region helps to relieve some of this pressure as part of this critical ecosystem. This ecosystem likely supports over 25% or 30% of the remaining elephants on the entire continent, making Hwange incredibly important. It's also a great place to see these huge, magnificent elephants.

Hwange was once a home for rhinos, and now, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Imvelo and Mark Butcher's Community Rhino Conservation Project, rhinos are starting to return. I love this Rhino Project because the community owns the rhinos it's their rhinos. As this program develops and matures, we can look forward to seeing freeranging rhinos in this area again in the not-too-distant future. This will mark the happy conclusion of a 20-year gap without rhinos in the Hwange system, and I'm very excited to see that happen.

Little Chem Chem and the Kwakuchinja Corridor

A VITAL LINK IN EAST AFRICA

THE LITTLE CHEM CHEM IN THE KWAKUCHINJA CORRIDOR IS AN INCREDIBLY SIGNIFICANT AREA, COVERING 50,000 ACRES - 10,000 ACRES ON THE LAKE MANYARA SIDE AND 40,000 ACRES IN THE BURUNGE CONCESSION BORDERING TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK.

LITTLE CHEM CHEM & THE KWAKUCHINJA CORRIDOR

LITTLE CHEM CHEM AND THE KWAKUCHINJA CORRIDOR

A VITAL LINK IN EAST AFRICA

There is arguably no other 50,000-acre area in East Africa that has a greater environmental and biological impact. This corridor acts as a massive artery of vitality and biodiversity, linking the Tarangire ecosystem with the Lake Manyara system, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Serengeti.

This 50,000-acre area has an enormous reach and impact, connecting these major ecosystems—the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Tarangire ecosystem. In East Africa, it is arguably one of the most important corridors for elephants. Large numbers of elephants use this corridor to move between these different ecosystems, making it extremely important.

TANZANIA

Additionally, it is one of the most beautiful places in East Africa, with a wide variety of habitats, including lakeshores on both Lake Burunge and Lake Manyara. This area is truly important, and I personally love it because it offers incredible elephant encounters, some of the best, on par with what you can experience in Botswana. The landscape is dotted with majestic baobab trees, adding to its visual beauty.

Mlevu SANCTUARY

WE ARE HONORED TO HAVE THE EXPERT TEAM OF ECOLOGISTS AT THE MALILANGWE TRUST TO CHAMPION THE TRANSLOCATION OF THESE MAGNIFICENT ANIMALS TO THE NEWLY ESTABLISHED MLEVU SANCTUARY. AS WE CONTINUE SHARING UP-TO-DATE DETAILS ON THIS HISTORICAL MOVE, WE INVITE YOU TO BE A PART OF THE RHINOS' JOURNEY AND THEIR NEW LIVES AT MLEVU SANCTUARY.

September 2024, the new Mlevu Sanctuary is welcoming two rhinos of its own!

The arrival of Thuza and Kusasa at our first community rhino sanctuary at Ngamo in May 2022 sparked the interest of other communities along Hwange's southern boundary.

The Cobras scout are excited to be welcoming two more white rhino to Mlevu sanctuary soon. Find out more about this here.

The rhinos have been identified by the expert team at the Malilangwe Trust. They were located and taken care of thanks to the great team of ecologists, vets and scouts during an exciting and complex operation last week. This involved locating the animals, darting and sedating them, monitoring their breathing and body temperatures, taking a small amount of DNA for future research purposes, dehorning the tips of their horns, loading them into crates (which for a 1500kg animal is no easy feat!), and then transporting them to their enclosed home for the next few weeks... Phew!

interest of other communities FOR WORLD RANGER DAY 2024, WE'D LIKE TO CELEBRATE OUR COBRAS COMMUNITY WILDLIFE PROTECTION SCOUTS WHO WILL BE PROTECTING MLEVU SANCTUARY'S TWO NEW RHINOS!

Three communities amalgamated their land adjacent to the Park boundary and allocated it to rhino conservation, creating the second community rhino sanctuary - the "Mlevu Rhino Sanctuary"

Since then the two rhino bulls have been "boma-ed" (or put in an enclosure) to be monitored over the next few weeks. They are given supplementary feed and are able to relax a little bit before their long trip ahead. The next few weeks are crucial to facilitating a swift translocation.

Rhino translocations need to be thorough, reactive and carefully planned to avoid anything going wrong. We are grateful to be able to partner with the Malilangwe team (the best experts in this field) and mitigate against any potential challenges.

This entire operation is truly a cohesive team effort and on this special World Ranger Day, we'd like to celebrate our Cobras scout and the hard work they do to protect Hwange's community rhinos.

More news to come soon!

BRIEF UPDATE: WHAT WE HAVE DONE AND WHERE WE ARE GOING.

The Tsholotsho Rhino Program operates in Hwange, Zimbabwe, within the Kavango-Zambezi (KAZA) transfrontier conservation area, where human-wildlife conflict is intense. The program, started in May 2022, focuses on reintroducing white rhinos to the region after they were poached out in the early 2000s. The program has successfully established the first community-led rhino sanctuary on communal lands, with 40 scouts protecting the rhinos. This initiative aims to boost tourism, create jobs, and fund community projects.

The program is now in Phase II, expanding to more community sanctuaries along the park's boundary. Future plans include the translocation of more rhinos, establishing a third sanctuary, and potentially expanding into southern Hwange. Successes so far include employment for over 60 locals, community education, tourist visits, and the establishment of a functioning human-wildlife conflict buffer zone. The program emphasizes community involvement, aiming to create a viable rhino population while benefiting local communities.

The Water4Wildlife Trust, based in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, received a $100,000 grant from Shikar Safari Club International (SSCI) in October 2023 to support the Tsholotsho North Concession Rhino Program.

The grant was fully expended, aiding in the payment of salaries, food rations, and equipment for community wildlife protection scouts. It also enabled the completion of Sanctuary 2, which is now ready to receive more rhinos.

The program successfully achieved its objectives, including the establishment of Sanctuary 2 and the recruitment of more scouts. Community involvement has grown, particularly due to the effectiveness of electric fencing in reducing human-wildlife conflicts. The program also emphasized the need for ongoing research and community education to ensure sustainable rhino conservation.

Lessons learned include the high costs and time requirements for program expansion, the importance of community-paced involvement, and the need for continuous scout training. Future efforts will focus on community engagement, increasing tourism for program funding, and ongoing data collection.

The project involved key collaborations with Imvelo Safari Lodges, Matupula Pvt, Tsholotsho Rural District Council, National Parks, and the Malilangwe Trust, which were crucial to the program's success.

Financially, the program raised $257,000 during the grant period, exceeding the projected $120,000, with funds largely used to cover operational expenses and repay earlier loans. In-kind contributions included various supplies like uniforms, solar lights, and a basic drone. The report highlights the program's ongoing need for partner support to sustain its conservation efforts.

Kwakuchinja WILDLIFE CORRIDOR

AS HUMAN POPULATIONS GROW EXPONENTIALLY WORLDWIDE, WILDLIFE HABITATS ARE BECOMING INCREASINGLY FRAGMENTED. THIS FRAGMENTATION LEADS TO DEVASTATING WILDLIFE-HUMAN CONFLICTS, RISING WILDLIFE-VEHICLE COLLISIONS, AND DEADLY COMPETITION BETWEEN WILDLIFE AND HUMANS FOR LAND, FOOD, AND RESOURCES.

CONSERVATION PARTNER IN TANZANIA

As human populations grow exponentially worldwide, wildlife habitats are becoming increasingly fragmented. This fragmentation leads to devastating wildlife-human conflicts rising wildlife-vehicle collisions, and deadly competition between wildlife and humans for land, food, and resources. In Tanzania, the Kwakuchinja Wildlife Corridor (The Corridor) linking Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks is a lifeline that provides safe passage for wildlife, enabling animals to feed, find mates, and thrive. In 2006, conservationists declared this area a lost cause; the area was on the verge of collapse due to years of unbridled poaching, livestock overgrazing, deforestation, and illegal settlements.

In 2008, the Chem Chem Association began rehabilitating The Corridor, and wildlife soon began roaming freely again between the two national parks.

In 2021, elephants successfully crossed the reconnected landscape for the first time in 40 years, traveling from Tarangire National Park to bathe in Lake Manyara—an incredibly poignant moment. In 2023, Tanzania held the first National Wildlife Corridors Forum: Securing Wildlife Connectivity for Sustainable Conservation. The Kwakuchinja Wildlife Corridor was declared a model for the rehabilitation of 61 others in Tanzania, born from our success.

Protecting and preserving these vital wildlife corridors is important for the survival of individual species and for the overall health and resilience of the entire ecosystem. By ensuring the availability of water and maintaining these crucial pathways, we can help safeguard the future of Africa's diverse wildlife for generations to come.

TANZANIA

Lake Burunge, fed by the Tarangire River, is a vital cornerstone of the Corridor, playing a crucial role in the ecosystem and is a magnet for elephants, buffaloes, zebras, and other wildlife, creating a harmonious balance in Tarangire National Park and across the Corridor. Lake Burunge has seen fluctuating water levels over the years due to water being diverted from the river into Lake Manyara. To restore the Lake, a project was initiated by the Chem Chem Association and funded by Shikar Safari Club International through the assistance of Banovich Wildscapes Foundation, to redirect the water back into Lake Burunge. The project's goal is to rehabilitate the Lake, raise water levels to support wildlife and empower local communities with economic opportunities through sustainable fishing practices.

In the ripple of change, this project illustrates the power of collective action in preserving our natural wonders for generations to come. Lake Burunge, a lifeline for humans and wildlife, stands as a symbol of resilience and a testament to the unwavering commitment to protecting and nurturing the beauty of Africa.

PARTNER IN NAMIBIA

M O U N T E T J O R H I N O T R U S T

Conservation is at the heart of my identity as an artist, hunter, and nature lover. It fuels my commitment to preserving our planet's fragile ecosystems. In 2018, I had the honor of founding the inaugural ACE Award in Charleston, SC, celebrating unsung heroes of conservation from around the world. These extraordinary individuals, driven by an unwavering dedication to saving creatures and habitats, could have pursued lucrative careers in fields like Science, Technology, Aerospace, or Finance. Yet, they chose conservation, giving endangered species and habitats a fighting chance in our increasingly human-dominated world.

As both an artist and conservationist, I deeply connect with these protectors of wild places. Through our Wildscapes Foundation, established out of a need for transparent financial practices, I realized that the success of a project depends not just on its merit but on the individuals driving it. True conservation entrepreneurs possess an unbreakable resolve, a passionate heart, and a profound understanding of the complexities of conservation, including the need to sometimes sacrifice a few to save many. They also navigate the intricate web of relationships within their teams, local communities, and governmental bodies, demanding nearly 24/7 dedication, especially in Africa's ever-changing political climates.

Nearly two decades ago, I had the privilege of meeting the late Jan Oelofse and his wife Annette at the Safari Club International Show in Las Vegas. Jan, a towering figure in wildlife conservation, was known for his pioneering work in game ranching and his deep passion for African wildlife.

YOU GIVE BACK WHEN YOU COLLECT BANOVICH ARTWORK. ENSURE SUSTAINABLE WILDLIFE AND WILD LANDS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

NAMIBIA

He developed the Oelofse Method, a revolutionary plastic capture technique still used today, which allowed for large-scale animal captures with minimal stress. Jan's journey began in Namibia, where he worked as a game trapper for Tanganyika Game Limited, capturing species like antelope, rhinos, and elephants for international zoos. He even trained animals for the 1962 film "Hatari," forging a close friendship with John Wayne.

In 1973, Jan founded the Okonjati Wildlife Sanctuary and Mount Etjo Safari Lodge in central Namibia, after acquiring and restocking the land with surplus game using his proprietary capture techniques. The sanctuary, spanning nearly 80,000 acres, became a thriving habitat for diverse wildlife, including over 150 white and black rhinos. Jan and Annette successfully integrated hunting and non-hunting tourism, making them standout figures in modern conservation.

When Jan unexpectedly passed away in 2012, Annette took on the immense responsibility of preserving the conservancy and its wildlife, particularly the rhinos. Fluent in five languages and an accomplished fixed-wing and helicopter pilot, Annette earned the nickname "Rhino Whisperer" for her dedication to raising rhino orphans whose mothers had been poached. Today, their son Alex, an engineer and skilled pilot, along with his wife Carola, who holds a degree in Human Genetics, oversee the operations of the conservancy. Their two young children, Kiera and Jan, are already showing an innate love for nature.

The Oelofse family's history is intertwined with Namibia's journey towards independence. In 1989, the Mount Etjo Declaration was signed at their lodge, recommitting to the peace process that led to Namibia's independence in 1990. The declaration, witnessed by international observers from Angola, Cuba, South Africa, the USA, and the Soviet Union, marked a pivotal moment in the country's history, and the Oelofse family felt privileged to have played a role.

In this critical moment for conservation, we must double down on supporting areas where wildlife populations are increasing. Although the Okonjati Conservancy has remained untouched by rhino poaching, we must prepare for the possibility. With a generous grant from the Shikar Safari Club, we aim to ensure our conservation efforts continue without interruption. I deeply admire those who choose to light a candle instead of cursing the darkness, and the Oelofse family embodies this spirit, lighting a candle daily in their quest to protect wild lands and wildlife.

CONSERVATION PARTNER IN KENYA

THE KENYA WILDLIFE TRUST

Through the generous support of a BWF donor we were able to provide a large grant for the The Kenya Wildlife Trust's Mara Predator Conservation Programme (MPCP). In 2022 we were pleased to work with the Behring Global Educational Foundation to further our shared vision and mission. The Behring Global Educational Foundation has been dedicated to improving the education, health and well-being of individuals globally by providing comprehensive, needs-based solutions enabled by innovative and proven business models and technologies. Over the years, Founder Ken Behring and John Banovich engaged in projects that shared their passion for wildlife and wild lands. We are pleased to continue to work with the BGEF board and Ken's sons, David and Jeff to carry on this dream.

The MPCP efforts are geared to achieving three key objectives; human wildlife conflict mitigation has thorough innovative conflict mitigation strategies adopted by communities, community outreach to enhance the understanding of the role of predators and conservation education implemented through Wildlife Clubs initiated in schools around the Mara. During this reporting period, MPCP’s community team of Lion ambassadors. continued to work within the communities to collect data relevant for decision making in terms priority actions to prevent conflict and engage communities in awareness meetings. The ambassadors were also issued with copies of Ole Peenko’s book series to enable them visit schools in their zones to read with the children. The Wildlife Club schools were also engaged through the distribution of our 3rd series of Ole Peenko’s book.

KENYA

MPCP’s community team worked tirelessly throughout 2022 implementing a series of planned activities aimed at achieving set objectives of reducing human wildlife conflicts, outreach to communities and conservation. During the month, the key activities implemented include: poison response training, lion ambassador’s 3rd review and a patrons training.

MPCP’s Community work is focused at engaging people that live around protected areas in the Mara in activities to mitigate human wildlife conflict, outreach and awareness and conservation education to achieve coexistence with predators. In May, the community team were engaged in a series of community feedback barazas, organized a wildlife clubs open day interaction and facilitated the installation of 3 water tanks in schools amongst other activities.

THE KENYA WILDLIFE TRUST

The MPCP initially supported only nine primary schools in the Mara, following a high demand from neighboring schools, MPCP extended its conservation education to other five new schools (Olesere primary, Enkeju Enkoirien primary, Olare orok primary,Talek boys Secondary and Maasai Mara Secondary school) hence increased the number of wildlife clubs to fifteen wildlife clubs in total with over 500 members.

MPCP so far designed, printed and distributed Volume I, II, and III series of ole peenko’s books to more 500 wildlife club members in fifteen schools across the Mara. The main objective of the books was to increase wildlife club members access to correct information on wildlife conservation, co-existence with wildlife and also improve reading skills of primary school children.

The adoption of the first book edition (“Ole peenko’s journey and other stories”) which features stories that resolves around human wildlife conflicts and coexistence, was printed and distributed during the outbreak of COVID-19. The second and third editions (Ole Peenko learns from Naserian and ole peenko survives the drought and other stories) is a follow-up to the first edition focusing more on climate change and issues facing communities in the greater Mara ecosystem in regards to Human wildlife conflicts respectively.

CONSERVATION

COMMUNITY:  Creating a viable source of income for rural communities and offering additional choices to their agriculture, livestock or worse, bush meat poaching. We continue to donate shoes, art supplies, books and medical supplies and equipment to assist in the enrichment of the programs and to bring clean water in countries like Rwanda and Kenya. This past year we contributed to build Bomas in an effort to mitigate the human/wildlife conflict that continues to rage in Kenya and Tanzania.

BIG CATS:  Critical to the survival of big cats, is the gathering of important scientific information and data to understand the influencing trends on their populations. The purchase of GPS collars and other research has led to a better understanding of the East African cheetah population as well as lion populations in the Manyara region of Tanzania including the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks as well as the human and livestock dominated landscape of the Laikipia ecosystem. We continue to seek ways to Incentivize local communities to co-exist with predators and other wildlife.

RHINOS:  Baby rhinos that are orphaned in the wild rarely survive. Our goal is to rescue, heal and to provide a totally secure environment where they can grow, roam free, and breed to ensure that there will always be rhinos in Africa.

PRIMATES:  For years we have focused on hands-on medical care for the critical species of sick and injured mountain gorillas residing in the National Parks of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This past year we underscored our mission of supporting the communities with the restoration of the maternity clinic in the Congo.

NORTH AMERICA:  BWF has long supported ecological research on grizzly bears in Yellowstone Park, genetic research on grizzly bears in Alaska, conventional and satellite radio-telemetry of wildlife, and the use of remote sensing to map vegetation and wildlife habitat. This research has led to guiding conservation policy and management, developing wildlife habitat suitability and connectivity models, and completing large-scale conservation area designs for regions in the United States, Canada, and Tibet.

MOUNTAIN GORILLA VETERINARY PROJECT

“Banovich Wildscapes Foundation helped Gorilla Doctors deliver lifesaving care for endangered mountain gorillas by meeting a critical need for our veterinarians in Uganda: a new truck, which enables our team to safely traverse the often rugged roads we travel daily to access Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks in southwestern Uganda. Thank you Banovich Wildscapes Foundation for your incredibly generous support!”

WILDSCAPES FOUNDATION WHEELCHAIR DISTRIBUTION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BEHRING GLOBAL EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION AND WHEELCHAIR FOUNDATION

The Banovich Wildscapes Foundation partnered with the Behring Global Educational Foundation & the Wheelchair Foundation to donate ‘hope, mobility, freedom, dignity and independence’ in the form of 240 wheelchairs to patients at HVP Gatagara, an orthopedic and rehabilitation hospital. We also distributed 230 wheelchairs to those in need in Tanzania.

Wildscapes Travel A LUXURY TRAVEL COMPANY BASED ON COMMUNITY, CULTURE AND CONSERVATION.

FOR JOHN BANOVICH, ART AND TRAVEL ARE TWO PASSIONS INEXTRICABLY INTERTWINED. His lust for natural beauty has lured him across the globe, and to his mind, the quest is inseparable from the art; it’s a quintessential part of the process.

To convey the vividness, you must fi rst experience it with all your senses, to embody it, and then pour it forth onto the canvas. You are a channel for the planet’s breath-taking beauty; it comes through you. And this intimate process of being exquisitely present and letting it permeate your being, is to let your soul be washed with the world’s magnificence.

As John shares the beauty of his experiences in art, so it came naturally to want to share them through travel. To take people to the source—to these places that inspire his work—is to share what moves him to pay homage in paint. This desire to

take his artistic immersion, and apply it to travel, is how Wildscapes Travel came to be.

For us, travel is a work of art. You start with a blank canvas and fi ll in all the intricacies, adding layers and washes and details until fi nally you step back and it’s a whole picture —one our clients will hang in a special place in their hearts, forever. We treat the planning process with John’s characteristic attention to each exquisite detail, believing that the end result should be nothing short of a masterpiece.

It goes without saying that John has been travelling this year—heeding Africa’s call, he sought out soul-expanding experiences to share, both on canvas and in life. Travel has changed—but we’re here to show you it’s far from impossible—and in fact, there’s better reason than ever to get out into the big wide world.

SINGITA, KATAZA HOUSE, RWANDA

“Having the opportunity to see the land and wildlife with my family by someone so passionate was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I plan on doing every year. I wouldn’t have wanted to be shown Africa by anyone besides John.”

SINGITA, LEBOMBO LODGE, KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

Luxury WITH A PURPOSE.

The wilderness needs no invitation to rewild. Without people around, the natural order of things has expanded more fully into its governance. To behold abundant wildlife with no mitigating human factor is more remarkable than ever, and as the world opens up, there is advantage to being the first out there to experience these places in this magical state, before things return ‘to normal’.

And your being there can make a true difference. Conservation relies on tourism, and these vast tracts of wilderness need our support. Just as John’s art gives back, so does our travel. Each destination is chosen for its conservation ethos and for how its custodians ensure that their presence uplifts the communities and wild places they serve.

Similarly, we select each property and experience for its excellence, ensuring that we work only with those that are aligned with our style and standards. John was delighted to find on his recent travels that our partners are committed to going above and beyond to make the process as seamless as possible and to reward you with the safari of a lifetime.

For John’s little girls, the unwalled world of the wild has been a classroom unlike any other. The beauty of travel shared with family cannot be overstated, and especially in a time when circumstances have distanced us from one other. To come together, to reconnect in a place of space, peace, and nature… there is no greater balm for the soul.

To our mind, the antidote to being confined is to escape to where untamed expanses know no bounds, and unfettered freedom beckons. All the things we love most about Africa have only enriched in this quietude, and our heart has grown ever fonder. She is waiting, and we are ready to take you to her. Would you care to join us?

Private SAFARIS TO SHARE

UNFORTETTABLE EXPERIENCES.

Sharing incredible moments with the different generations of your family is the ultimate way to reconnect, explore, and unwind with those closest to you. At Wildscapes Travel, we design with intention to customize itineraries to accommodate families traveling together who are seeking a world class safari experience. The luxury of an African Safari with your family is beyond the sumptuousness of your suite, it is the pristine setting and watching your children have a life changing experience. Luxury is also knowing that shared memories marked by nature, culture, wildlife, and wide-open spaces prove invaluable for multigenerational travelers.

There are many safaris we craft that focus on learning about the importance of African wildlife conservation, which can be an eye-opening experience for a child. When you set off to explore the bushveld, special game drives will be tailored just for a family or a group of families. On a family safari in Africa, the little ones will be kept entertained at the safari lodge’s many activities where kids can interact with the local culture, have up close and personal animal experiences, enjoy campfi res, and play in the plunging pools on the deck as the sun sets over the Savannah.

Seeing Africa through the eyes of children is magnified tenfold when they discover a different world. For them, the prospect of a real life “Lion King” is fascinating. From the Serengeti to the Maasai Mara, we will introduce you to Africa’s incredible terrain and the rare and beautiful wildlife that calls it home. From lions and elephants, meerkats to monkeys, prepare to be captivated.

If you’d like us to design an African safari experience to suit your family’s needs, we have a vast range of family experiences up our sleeves that we’d love to share with you.

"Having a leader like John who is so smart and knowledgeable and has experienced Africa more than almost any American is spectacular. The fact that he loves the animals, the people and the land and has built his livelihood around expressing the beauty of Africa makes him beyond spectacular to put the ultimate Safari together. You will never be the same if you go on this trip.”

The 'Stallion' is a face-on portrait of a zebra that's all about simplicity and impact. In the wild, encountering the gaze of a zebra is a moment of striking intensity. The background is stripped away, leaving just you and the zebra locked in a moment. The zebra's eyes, framed by its distinctive black and white stripes, exude a captivating combination of curiosity and wariness. The dark, soulful orbs seem to hold a wealth of untamed spirit and wisdom, refl ecting the creature's wild nature, while also drawing parallels to the enigmatic eyes of a wild 'stallion.' There's a certain alertness in their gaze, a testament to their survival instincts honed in the vast African savannas.

As an artist, 'Stallion' is my way of capturing the raw beauty and strength of the zebra in contemporary way, making it a symbol of untamed freedom found in wild Africa!

SAVING TIGERS, AND BECOMING A PART OF HISTORY.

"I was honored to create a special painting for Her Majesty, the Queen of Bhutan, in gratitude for her royal patronage of the fi rst International Tiger Summit in Bhutan, at the request of the International Tiger Conservation Coalition. Thrilled to attend as their guest and witness the beauty of Bhutan, I presented ‘TAK’ to Her Majesty at the opening ceremony. Now, through the limited edition release of this print, we are raising funds to support tiger conservation efforts, marking a historic moment. We are privileged to be at the forefront of a ten-year collaborative journey aimed at securing sustainable fi nancing for the conservation of tiger landscapes." “I have always admired the sepia photographs of Native Americans by Edward S. Curtis and have long been inspired to capture that simplistic but powerful depiction of a subject.

I knew that a close cropped, intimate view of a Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant and Cape Buffalo done in sepia would create a contemporary depiction of the subjects and a perfect fit. Strong, Dramatic and Compelling." – John Banovich

“The ideas behind all my painitngs have wild origins. Occasionally, it is necessary to spend time with captive subjects to gain an intimate view of the details. ACACIA
CHEETAH STUDY

“ The male lion has always been regarded as the King of Beasts with an exquisite feline face framed by the most beautiful gold and black mane of hair. I love the way golden back light frames the subject and warms the shadow areas making everything glow. These male lions find themselves starting to wake up as the sun sets where they will most likely go looking to make a kill under the veil of darkness. Lions rule the night.”

“To witness that calm rhythm of life revives our worn souls and recaptures a feeling of belonging to the natural world. No one can return from the Serengeti unchanged, for tawny lions will forever prowl our memory and great herds throng our imagination.” –

"Lions and elephants are the most powerful in Africa, both physically and in their presence. They both should be called 'King of Beasts' as one should be the President and the other the Prime Minister. They both have deep respect for one another but if they re truly tested, the elephants mass and strength will win out every time."

“When a male lion explodes from the bush in a fi ery rage straight at you, every cell in your body seems to shudder in fear. “There is an old African proverb that says “An elephant never tires of carrying its tusks.” I say, the author must never have met the elephant tasked with carrying the world record tusk which weighed over 120 kilograms. Man has had a fascination this “White Gold” for centuries. Used in everything from billiard balls, piano keys and other expressions of exotic wealth, the legal sale of ivory was banned worldwide at the 1990 CITES meeting.

Unfortunately the ban made illegal ivory that much more expensive, hitting its peak in 2014 selling at $2100 per kilogram, and that much more exploited. Today we are losing approximately one elephant every 15 minutes and according to the Great Elephant Census, the population numbers at only 352,000 elephants, pushing the worlds largest land mammal to the brink of extinction in many ecosystems.”

"I love painting the spirit and movement of water!

Water is the lifeblood of our bodies, our economy, and our society. It makes life on earth possible. In Botswana’s Okavango Delta it turns a harsh desert into a thriving oasis. Thousands of animals and people celebrate the season of pula, (rain in swahili), when the Angola rainfall makes its 2,500 mile journey from the highlands of Angola to the Okavango Delta, forming a wellspring of life in the sands of the Kalahari, bringing with it sustenance and hope.

I titled this painting “Disruption“ as the giant bull truly disrupts anything in his path and all are at his will. He has lived to see the worst and best that the African veld has to offer and it shows in his torn ears, aged wrinkles and wise face. The white faced whistling ducks add a sense of movement and energy to the composition and bring your eye into the old bull. Also notice the cape buff alo in the background and then look deep into the background and fi nd the Kudu, like Africa this painting slowly unveils its inhabitants so that you must search carefully for each of its treasures."

“During the expansion of the American west, one group stands out for their bravery and patriotism—the Buff alo Soldiers of the US Army. During the Indian wars, Native Americans used the name to describe the uncompromising spirit and courage of these black warriors. African Americans have fought in all of our military engagements, but their greatest contributions came during the Civil War. Nearly 200,000 Buff alo Soldiers served the Union side. Their sacrifi ces and bravery were unparalleled. African Buff alos share this vigilant reputation. Their stoic resolve and unwavering constitution mirror these brave and honorable men.”

“‘Bahati Ya Kawinda’ is Swahili for ‘lucky hunting.’ This piece features a family of lions on a fresh warthog kill. Even though this is small prey for two adults and three cubs, it probably was an important hunting lesson for the cubs that before long will be capable of capturing prey on their own. And as with most kills in East Africa, it does not take long for scavengers to show up hoping to steal a tidbit for themselves.” – John Banovich

KUDU

“The idea for the paintings, ‘The Defensive Line’ SOLD OUT and ‘The Offensive Line,’ originated in the titles, and having played football, I remember the feeling of lining up against a lineman that outweighed me by 75 pounds. African buff alo seemed to be the best candidate for that role, given their bad attitude and helmet-shaped horns. On safari in 1994, I came across a pride of lions and a herd of buff alo engaged in such a test of wills. Positioned 30 yards apart, they began to size each other up for what would be the world’s greatest confrontation.”

John Banovich, Defensive Line, 1995, oil on Belgian linen, 30h x 90w in • Mushingashi, Zambia

“There is no greater bond in the big cat world than between pride males. Male lions often start out their lives as litter mates, and these two brothers will grow up together and leave the family pride together. If they successfully conquer all of the threats facing a lion in the wild, they will fi nally arrive at the day when they rule over a territory and have a pride of their own.

Like all brothers, they will fi ght over the small stuff, but reconcile their differences fairly quickly. One day, as new heirs defending their own pride, they will face an enormous amount of challenges, but because of their deep connection, they will go to war for each other, defi ning what the word ‘partners’ truly means.”

“Palindaba is a Swahili word meaning a place of great gathering. This scene took place in Ngorongoro Crater at Lake Magadi, where many times during the year the soda lake attracts thousands of fl amingos and the fresh water inlet attracts big herds of wildebeest, zebra, and sometimes hippos, making it a popular drinking area. The kaleidoscope of white and pink fl amingos made for a perfect backdrop for the interaction of dark wildebeests and the striped torsos of zebras.” – John Banovich

“Amba,” as he is known to the Udege people of far eastern Russia; strong, silent and deadly, the Siberian Tiger or Amur tiger is perfectly adapted to the land where the jungles of Asia meet the boreal forests of the north. Although larger prey like Sika and Wild Boar make up the main source of this big cats diet, like all cats it seems to have a magnetic draw to anything that moves, making a good old fashion game of “Cat and Mouse,” irresistible. – John Banovich

MISTY ENCOUNTER

“On a recent trip to northern British Columbia Canada, near the border of the Yukon, a close friend had a successful morning hunting moose. We had seen sign of bear on this trip but fortunately they kept their distance that morning. I often visualized what it might look like if the only winner here had been the grizzly. In any grizzly encounter the terms are always dictated by the Bear!” – John Banovich

“Known to be very good mothers, female polar bears typically produce two to three cubs, but rarely does more than one survive their fi rst year. SHELTER
Zawadi

“‘Sixty Miles per Hour’ demonstrates the powerful speed and endurance of the North American pronghorn. Exceptionally fast, this Great Plains ungulate runs at speeds up to 60 mph, second only to the cheetah. Even more impressive is that it can actually maintain a high speed longer than any other, making it a true marathon runner, and has the longest land migration in the continental United States.

THE LIMITED EDITIONS

The sole survivor of the ancient Antilocapridae family, dating back 20 million years, the pronghorn is 30 mph faster than its closest competitor alluding to an extinct cheetah-like predator which would have hunted it on the plains. I wanted to capture the greatness of a massive pronghorn herd in full fl ight through a unique, contemporary composition that magnifi es the power and ambiguity of this incredible animal.” – John Banovich

SILENT THUNDER

There is something pure, truthful and immediate in the simple lines of a sketch. I have been sketching in the field for many years, and nothing trains one’s eye to truly see and understand a subject better than drawing from life. I use my sketches and studies for future works. Some may manifest into finished paintings and others remain in their original status, suspended in time, as an illustration. A rare few are brought to the light to be shared and enjoyed in their simple splendor.” – John Banovich

I have always been fascinated by the power of a hand drawn line. A well-placed line creates lost and found areas, defining contour, shapes and boundaries, leading the eye to interpret in three dimensions. Mimicking musical notes on a page, lines evoke a reaction in our heart, mind and soul and can narrate a story with precision.

I started drawing at approximately age three with wax crayons and today I reconnect with my inner child using conte’ crayons, invented in 1795 by the French Painter Nicolas-Jacques Conte’ (1755–1805). The conte’ crayon’s ability to maintain integrity while creating soft and hard edges quickly became a medium that artists, young and old love to sketch with.

Born of my deep love for my own children and the desire to create something simple and beautiful for their rooms, with a nod to my inner child, I am so pleased to introduce and share my new sketch series called WILD CHILD.
