The idea came to Olivia Koburongo, 26, after her grandmother fell ill, and was moved from hospital to hospital before being properly diagnosed with pneumonia. It was too late to save her and she ended up dying. That was the point when Olivia thought of a way in which vital signs of the disease could be tracked in an automated way and she brought the idea to me and B e s u f e k a d Shieraw. We then made m o r e research on the disease and its impact, brainstormed through it and came up with a design that we felt could address the situation. We then drafted a proposal which we submitted to the Big Ideas Competition and we were awarded a 2nd Place in the Global Health category which gave us the motivation to pursue the dream.
We are strongly looking at making a contribution to improving human well-being and livelihood by using the applied technologies to positively impact humanity. With our organisation, we envisage great partnerships with many organisations seeking to make meaningful community impact and our focus will be put to making solutions that address life’s main challenges. Back then, we were motivated by my lecturer Mwikirize Cosmas who constantly shaped us to easily look out for community problems that we could address and Dr. Dorothy Okello who shaped us to know that engineers solve things the easy way. That way, we set our minds to positively contribute better solutions to our communities and am far more convinced that many more students passing through the same people will do much more.
Our core mission is Saving the lives of children and we believe that these have a big great future in which they can make a huge dierence if given a chance to live.

Lakheni is a social and business model innovation which seeks to aggregate low-income households into buying-groups in order to negotiate favourable discounts for goods and services supplied to these households. Most poor people end up paying for goods and services at a unit price that is usually much higher than the unit price paid by other people with more disposable income.
This is because as goods and services are packaged into smaller and smaller units to make them aordable, they become less economically eďŹƒcient and end up costing higher than if one was to buy in bulk or in larger units. In essence, thepoor end up paying a poverty premium. Lakheni solves this problem by aggregating poor households into a buyer’s market by leveraging mobile technology.
