BAPIO PARTICIPATION IN HOUSE OF COMMONS DIWALI CELEBRATIONS

BAPIO SUPPORTS ORGAN DONATION EVENTS AT THE HOUSE OF COMMONS AND HOUSE OF LORDS Lord Gadhia hosted an event at the House of Commons on 12th September 2018 to discuss how Indians can help increase organ donation in the UK, with Jackie DoylePrice MP, health Minister and Lead for NHS Blood and Transplantation. Public opinion on organ donation is reported as 80% willing to consider organ donation, but this is comparatively lower in BAME communities at 69%. This is in keeping with the overall ‘consent rate’ of organ donation of a loved one after death with it being 66% nationally and 42% in BAME communities.

Left to right: Dr Dev Chauhan, Angela Rippon and Mr Ashok Khandelwal

BAPIO also joined a workshop organised by The NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) and Lord Gadhia on 2nd November at House of Lords; to update Hindu and Jain organisations about the anticipated move to an ‘opt out’ system for organ donation in England and to develop a Hindu and Jain strategic plan to communicate these changes before the new system is introduced. It is anticipated that the new law will be in place for England by spring 2019 and it will be implemented from April 2020.

The workshop was aimed at engaging community leaders to break down the perceived cultural barriers to address this disparity.

TO BE PAID OR NOT TO BE PAID, THAT IS THE QUESTION? Case Study: MDS Member Dr X, was working at the same Trust as a Speciality Doctor for 8 years and approached MDS for advice after realising that his basic pay had remained the same since 2010. MDS reviewed Dr X’s payslips, initial contract and correspondence between the Dr and the Trust. It was evident that the Dr was later offered a substantive post but remained on the same pay throughout the duration of his employment with the Trust. MDS Advice: MDS calculated the correct pay scale Dr X should have been on since the commencement of his employment along with any incremental credit owed and it was evident that the Dr had been significantly underpaid. MDS wrote to the Trust highlighting the amount owed. The Trust initially failed to provide an adequate response so MDS consulted ACAS Early Conciliation within the relevant limitation period. MDS drafted a letter before claim and within a couple of weeks, the Trust responded and made Dr X an offer to settle the matter for an amount exceeding £90,000 plus an agreement to cover any pension loss which Dr X happily accepted. Dr X was also put on the correct pay scale to ensure that this did not affect him moving forwards.
