MeetDr ShreyasBellur,oneofthe philanthropicallysupportedresearch associatesatMiamiCancerInstitute. OriginallyfromBengaluru,India,Dr. BellurcametotheUnitedStatesupon completingmedicalschoolto continuehistraininginpursuitof becomingacardiothoracicsurgeon.
Bornwithcongenitalheartdisease, herecognizestheimportanceof researchandsurgicalintervention andhasdedicatedhislifetogiving backtotheworldthroughmedicine, inthesamewaymedicinegavehim thechancetolive.
Dr.Bellurrecentlyspentayearat BaptistHealthMiamiCancerInstitute asapost-doctorateresearch associate,studyingpatternsthat influenceclinicaloutcomesto developrecommendationsfor cancertreatments.Thefindings wouldthenbesharedinjournalsand atmedicalconferences.“That’s essentiallymygoal–todevelop guidelinesforthetreatmentofcertain diseases,andusetheminaclinical setting,”hesays.

ThePatientNavigationProgramatMiamiCancerInstituteensurespatientsare notfacingthechallengesbroughtonbyacancerdiagnosisalone.Eachpatientis pairedwithanursenavigator,whoactsasanallyandadvocate,toensureour patientsreceivethesupporttheyneedandapersonalizedtreatmentplan. Nursenavigatorsworkwithotherteammemberstosupportpatientsthroughoutthe carecontinuum.WhenpatientsrequesttheirfirstappointmentatMiamiCancer Institute,intakenursenavigatorsworkcloselywithbusinessoperations,schedulers andoutpatientclinicstafftogeteverythinginplaceforaproductivevisit.
Ifaproviderprescribeshomecareequipmentorsupplies,nursenavigators collaboratewithanambulatorycasemanagertoensurethatnothingfallsthrough thecracks.Whenpatientsarenearinghospitaldischarge,inpatientnursenavigators helpthemunderstandtheirnextstepsandassistwiththeircaretransitiontoMiami CancerInstitute.Theseessentialteammembersimprovethepatientexperienceby answeringpatientquestionsandalleviatingconcerns.
Whenpatientscompleteactivetreatmentandtransitiontoourcancersurvivorship program,nursenavigatorsensuretheyreceivethesupportandeducationtheyneed tothrive.Lastyear,nursenavigatorspartneredwiththesurvivorshipteamtolauncha newinitiativecalled“BeyondC.”Theydevelopednewpatienteducationmaterials andin-serviceeducationforoncologynursenavigators.

WhenRajBhargavawas diagnosedwithacutemyeloid leukemia,hisdaughterRupa,a memberofBaptistHealth Foundation’sBoardandGiving Society,wantedhimtreatedat BaptistHealth.Hespentmore thanfiveweeksatBaptist HospitalandvisitedMiami CancerInstitutefor chemotherapy.“Ireceived excellentcare,”saysRaj.
HeandRupaappreciated BaptistHealth’scoordination ofcare.“Itwaslikeateamof coaches,”saysRupa.“Andmy impressionwastheywere caring,thoughtfuland responsive.”Afteraboutayear, herfatherwentintoremission andendedthechemo.“The physicianswereextremely thorough,”shesays.“Theyare alsoreallygoodatfollowing whatthepatientwants.”

Medicalequipmentisessentialtoprevent,diagnoseandtreatillnessesand diseasessafelyandeffectively.Philanthropicsupportfromdonorsleveragesthe Institute’scommitmenttopairingworld-classmedicalexpertswithoftenlifechangingmedicalequipmenttobestservetheneedsofourcommunity. Technologicaladvancementsarerapidandever-evolving,anddonorsupport hasensuredMiamiCancerInstitutekeepspacewiththemoststate-of-the-art equipmentandmedicaladvances.
Bladderscanners
PhilanthropicfundswereusedtopurchasetwonewVerathonbladderscanners fortheRadiationOncologydepartment.Thescannersareusedtoscanpatients withpelviccancers,suchasprostateorgynecologicalcancers,todeterminethe fillvolumeofthebladderforconsistencyintreatment.Thankstothesupportof BaptistHealthFoundation,theadditionalscannershavehelpedalleviatedelays tothecurrentworkflow,impactingbothpatientsandstaff.
Digitalradiographypanels
Philanthropysupportedthepurchaseofdigitalradiographypanels,whichare usedduringthesetupandtreatmentofTBI(totalbodyirradiation)patients.The newdigitalradiographypanelsallowstafftoacquireimagesquicker,leadingto adecreaseinthetotaltimeneededtotreatTBIcases.Thisiscriticalaspatients whoarereceivingbloodandmarrowtransplantsdonotfeelwellandwantto receivetreatmentasquicklyaspossible.
Ultrasoundsystem

TheInstitutealsoplacesgreatimportanceonprovidingpediatricpatientswitha compassionateenvironment,engagingactivitiesandarangeofcomplementary therapiestomakesureouryoungestpatientsremainpsychologicallyhealthy duringtreatmentandbeyond
ForpediatricpatientCassandra“Cassie”Lazo,thepresenceofartandmusic helpedsoothehercancerjourney.ShefoundcomfortinengagingwiththeArtists inResidenceattheInstituteaspartoftheArtsinMedicineprogram,whichisfully fundedbyBaptistHealthFoundationdonors.
In2015,whenshewasjusteightmonthsold,Cassiewasbeingtreatedfora urinarytractinfection(UTI)whenthedoctornoticedshehadhemihyperplasia,a raredisorderinwhichonesideofthebodygrowsmorethantheotherdueto excessproductionofcells,causingasymmetry
ThedoctororderedsomescanswhichshowedCassiealsohadalesiononher rightkidneythathethoughtmaybeaprecursortoaWilmstumor,or nephroblastoma,themostcommontypeofkidneycancerinchildren.
Cassiewasotherwisehealthyandoverthenextfewyearsshewasfollowedby herdoctorandcloselymonitoredbyhermother,FrancisLazo.Herworstfears cametruein2021whenMrs.Lazonoticedherdaughter’surinewasred.Alarmed, shetookCassietotheemergencydepartmentatNicklausChildren’sHospital, wherescansandultrasoundsrevealedthatCassiedidindeedhaveaWilms tumoronherrightkidney.
CassieendedupseeingDouredDaghistani,M.D.–knownaffectionatelyas“Dr.D.” byhispatientsandcolleagues.Dr.Daghistaniisalongtimepediatriconcologist withBaptistHealthandmedicaldirectorofpediatriconcologyandhematology atMiamiCancerInstitute.

Dr.Daghistanisaysthatfollowingsurgerytoremoveherdiseasedkidney,Cassie underwentseveralmonthsofchemotherapythatendedinSeptember2021.“We keptacloseeyeonher,andeverythingwasgood,”hesays.
ButtheninMarch2022,afollow-upCTscanshowedhercancerhadreturned,this timeinherlung.“Ineverthoughtshewasgoingtorelapse–itwasanunpleasant surprise,”Dr Daghistaniadmits
ThetumorwassurgicallyremovedandCassieunderwenttwoweeksofradiation therapyandstillmorechemotherapy,whichshecompletedinFebruary2023. Thistime,itappearstohaveworked.“Cassieiscancer-freeasoftoday–shehas averygoodprognosis,”Dr.Daghistanisays.Mrs.Lazoadds,“She’sdoinggreat–healthy,feelingfineandfollowingupwith‘Dr.D’every3months.”
Cassieandhermotheralsoexpressedappreciationfortheartistsandmusicians whoareatMiamiCancerInstituteeverydayaspartoftheInstitute’sinnovative ArtsinMedicineprogram,fundedentirelythroughphilanthropicgiftstothe BaptistHealthFoundation.“Ilikedthemusicpeople,”Cassiesays.“Oneofthem (Robin)taughtmehowtoplaytheviolin.”
“They’reveryunderstandingwithkidsandgreatatwhattheydo,”Mrs.Lazosays oftheartistsinresidenceattheInstitute.“Musicandarttherapyisveryimportant andmakesarealdifference,especiallyforyoungchildren.Everydaywhenshe washere,Cassiewouldhaveartsandcraftsandmusicandshejustlovedthat. It’sverytherapeuticandithelpstaketheirmindsoffoftheirtreatmentand distractthemfromtheirpain.”
Asasinglemomwhowasdealingwithherlittlegirl’scancerdiagnosis,Mrs.Lazo sayssheneverfeltaloneatMiamiCancerInstitute.“Iwasgoingthroughhell,but itwasagreatexperience.‘Dr.D.’,thenurses,thesocialworkersandthechildcare specialistwhowalkedmethroughthewholeprocess–theywerebeyondgreat andtheyreallyhelpedputmymindatease.Iwasputtingmydaughterintheir handsandIkneweverythingwasgoingtobefine.”

A$2milliongiftfromTrishandDanBellhelpedestablishtheCenter.Asinaugural donorstotheHealthEquitiesFund,theBellsarehelpingenhanceanddevelop programsandapproachestospecificallyaddresscancerhealthdisparities relatedtocancerresearchandcare.
In2023,philanthropysupportedresearcheffortsandfundedinitiativesand objectivesthatfallundertheCenterforEquityinCancerCare&Research.In additiontotheresearcharmofitswork,theCenterfocusesonprevention, education,screening,careandsurvivorship.
