South Miami Hospital Center for Women & Infants 2021 Impact Report

Thank you for supporting the Center for Women & Infants at South Miami Hospital. Your generosity has been instrumental in helping the Center provide high-quality, comprehensive medical care to those we are privileged to serve. In 2021, 879 babies entered our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). One of the largest in South Florida, the NICU has a capacity of 47 Level II and 15 Level III neonatal intensive care beds, supported by a dedicated around-the-clock team of neonatologists, allied health professionals and nurses that provide care for babies with a wide variety of delicate medical issues. Philanthropy has made an impactful difference in the NICU by funding important equipment and resources to help our clinical staff offer the best care for our tiniest patients and their families. The generosity of our donors has also helped launch and support key initiatives to enhance the patient experience, such as patient care navigators and bedside transition nurses – adding to the special care and attention given to patients and their families. Philanthropic support has provided valuable education and training opportunities for clinical staff and supported services at the Child Development Center for infants and children with developmental delays and disabilities, helping countless children in our community fully develop their potential and thrive. Donor support for the Center for Women & Infants at South Miami Hospital strengthens Baptist Health's commitment to service excellence and compassionate care for all. Thank you for helping us continue to enhance the quality care provided to our community.

Patient Experience At the Center for Women & Infants, our caring staff takes a patient- and family-centered approach to care. Through the generosity of our donors, several key initiatives have launched to help guide and support patients and their families. Patient Care Navigators: Nurse Navigators facilitate patients by coordinating care, treatment and communication among the patient's medical team. They act as medical mentor, coach, advocate and companion to share the progress and setbacks of a patient’s journey. At South Miami Hospital, our nurse navigator team helped 1,055 patients receive navigation in 2021. High Risk Maternal Fetal Unit: South Miami Hospital’s Labor and Delivery Department was the first in Florida to earn Joint Commission certification for pre-term labor and is among one of few in the country with this distinction. Generously funded by philanthropy, our team of experts, led by Medical Director Jorge L. Gomez, supports high-risk patients from prenatal diagnosis to the treatment of complex conditions. In 2021, more than 650 patients were treated in the High Risk Maternal Fetal Unit. Bedside transition Nurses: The first 60 minutes after birth is a critical time for both the mother and her newborn. Traditionally, mother and baby are separated within 45-60 minutes after a vaginal delivery to allow the newborn to go to the newborn nursery for a bath and full assessment. Once the mother is deemed stable from the labor and delivery area, she is transitioned to her postpartum room and reunited with her baby, after a separation period of 2-3 hours. Philanthropy supported the hiring of two bedside transition nurses. While one nurse cares for the mother, another tends to the baby and performs all of the functions normally completed in the newborn nursery right in the patient room. Bedside transition helps improve maternal newborn bonding, enables skin-to-skin contact to help maintain the newborn’s temperature and metabolic levels and promotes breastfeeding. It also leads to greater patient satisfaction, reduced healthcare cost and better health outcomes for both the mother and her newborn baby.

Staff Training & Education Training and education enhances the quality care provided to patients daily by our dedicated team of specialists. The generosity of our donors has supported educational programs for the continued growth and development of nurses in Labor/Delivery and Mother/Baby units, including:

March of Dimes - Breaking Through Bias in Maternity Healthcare E-Learning Prepared Childbirth Breastfeeding Counselor Course and Certification Exams Just Cause training course aimed at addressing bias and creating a more just culture to ensure equal treatment Spinning Babies workshop - teaching to use positioning to improve ease of childbirth Small Baby Care Specialist training A new Victoria advanced birthing simulator was made possible by the fundraising efforts of the Young Professionals of Baptist Health (YPBH). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 700 women die from pregnancy-related complications in the U.S. every year; and in Florida, more than half of the maternal deaths were preventable. This lifelike robotic mannequin simulates the conditions and symptoms of labor and delivery, allowing nurses, physicians and other providers to train and test high-risk and complex scenarios.

Thanks to the efforts of YPBH, the simulation mannequin will provide opportunities for clinical training that will help save the lives of women with complicated deliveries.

Child Development Services Philanthropy is making a significant impact in South Miami Hospital’s ability to continue helping infants and children with developmental delays and disabilities.

The Child Development Center evaluates infants and children for potential problems that might require medical treatment, therapy services or parent education. Through a unified, interdisciplinary approach to developmental problems, the Center provides individualized treatment plans to help infants, children and adolescents through age 18 achieve their full capabilities in all areas of development. The generosity of our donors' support allows the Child Development Center to continue to provide outstanding healthcare to our youngest patients. It also ensures the sustainability of the program, funding equipment, supplies, maintenance, administrative and clinical support, infant clinic assessments and other operational needs. The Center cares for over 1,000 patients each year, with an average of 17,000 clinic visits annually. Donor support allows the team to staff an occupational therapist, physical therapist and speech therapists to meet the needs of patients. The Center launched the Infant Clinic for neonatal intensive care graduates who are at risk for developmental delays and disabilities. In 2021, the Clinic conducted over 500 developmental assessments for NICU graduates at no cost thanks to the generosity of our donors. 7
