Topical Approaches to Pain Management Healers throughout human history and in every culture have applied medicines directly to the source of pain. One of the oldest medical documents ever discovered, the 3500-year-old Ebers Papyrus, includes poultices, salves, oils and plasters for conditions ranging from Sting of Wasp to Headache.
contains no dung of any sort,” says Rowan Hamilton, Director of Research at Humn Pharmaceuticals. “What it does contain though, helps us believe in the strength of modern pain relievers without the need for powerful pills.”
Found in a tomb at Thebes about 1862 and preserved at the University of Leipzig, Ebers Papyrus is a miscellaneous collection of extracts and jottings from at least forty sources. One remedy found in the text is a poultice composed of pieces-of-excrement, Cat’s dung, Dog’s dung, and berries of the Xet plant. This apparently would “drive out all the Scurf”.
In our own time and culture, a new understanding of pain treatment is emerging from research and patient studies. It points to topical preparations as a viable delivery mechanism for pain relief medication. The forms they take are creams, gels, liquids and patches. The object is to apply pain relief where it hurts. This may be one of the most important recent developments in the treatment of pain – even if it is a centuries old practice.

Topical pain relief may change that belief.

on and his daughter, Director and VP Candy Ho, are amiable and given to laughter. They treat each other with a deference born out of respect, and they absolutely love what they do. They are like kids describing their favourite toys – glowing as they describe their upcoming projects. This morning, they sent in a zoning application for their largest, most ambitious project to date: The Oasis Retirement Community – a 17-acre project opposite the Langley Event Centre. The plans call for beautiful gardens, walkways, individual houses and high-rise buildings of up to 20 stories. “It was very well received by the planner,â€? says an excited Don. The Oasis Retirement Community will allow adult children to have their own apartment unit or a two- to three-bedroom house, which can accommodate a younger family with grandkids, while grandma and grandpa live just across a footbridge within walking distance. “We call that ‘the soup’s distance concept,’â€? laughs Candy. “Soup is very important to us!â€? replies Don with a grin. “That’s what I do! I live about 10 steps away from Don,â€? says Candy. “And visa versa,â€? quips Don. “When you are walking distance away, the soup is still so hot!â€? “Boiling practically!â€? “We feel the village will be extremely inviting. And it will allow for the full continuum of care, so people can age in place without having to move away.â€? Don has an excellent track record providing desirable lifestyle choices for seniors and their families. As a matter of fact, he’s credited with pioneering the continuum lifestyles concept. Upon arriving in Canada in 1983, he set to work as an architect and structural engineer. He did well creating and building condos. While he enjoyed this, he yearned to put down roots in his community. Âł, EHJDQ WKLQNLQJ , VKRXOG EXLOG D KRWHO RU DQ RŕľśFH WRZHU that I could leave behind with a brand or a name.â€? Then, in the early ’90s, his mother developed dementia and his father, who was still active, felt compelled to care for his wife. Don saw the impact of his father’s decision on his parents’ lives. “My father decided to live with my mother in a nursing home. It wasn’t very inviting, but my father was good about it. Candy agrees. “I didn’t think he should be forced into being a caregiver, while he was still able to pursue life, just because he was afraid his wife would be neglected,â€? says Don. His parents’ situation prompted Don to look for a better
solution. There wasn’t one. “So, I thought to myself, ‘if I can build things, why can’t I build something to accommodate today’s seniors?’â€? 7KDW LV KRZ WKHLU Ă€DJVKLS UHVLGHQFH WKH &UHVFHQW *DUGHQV LQ :KLWH 5RFN FDPH WR EH DQG LW ZDV WKH ÂżUVW RI LWV NLQG 7KH\ RŕľľHUHG FRQGRV IRU PRUH DFWLYH VHQLRUV DQG LQGHSHQGHQW OLYLQJ rentals for those who no longer wanted to be burdened with home ownership. And in order to make sure couples could continue living together as the aged, Don and his team added care services for the less-active seniors. “At that time, there was not a continuum-of-care lifestyle choice for seniors in Canada,â€? says Candy. “Why isn’t there, we asked? It was the right thing to do.â€? “The project was successful,â€? says Don. “We received overwhelming support.â€? Assisted Living was a new concept, at the time, and Don was instrumental in forming BCSLA (BC Senior Living Association) because he and others could see the need to bridge the gap between fully independent living and complex care. Âł$W /DQJOH\ *DUGHQV WKHLU QH[W SURMHFW ZH FUHDWHG D Ă€RRU to cater to those in need of Assisted Living. Again, it was very well received.â€? In 2002, government bureaucrats were encouraged by Fraser Health to examine their model. “They thought it was a heck of a good idea,â€? laughs Don. “‘Why haven’t we thought of this?’ they said.â€? Until then, all care fell under the jurisdiction of a licensing body, which did not permit anything less than full complex care. Those requiring light care were visited in their homes by a nurse. They invited Don to work with them to create policies and procedures for Assisted Living. The program’s only failing, in Don’s opinion, is the lack of understanding the public has about Assisted Living. Seniors often think that if they move LQWR DQ $VVLVWHG /LYLQJ UHVLGHQFH ZLWK D QXUVH RQ VWDŕľľ WKH\ will be able to stay there forever. Unfortunately, once you require assistance for more than two Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), you are told to go. When people have to move out, it can be devastating. “When you are progressing towards needing complex care, it is the worst time ever to have to move,â€? Candy says. “A completely able person has a lot of stress when moving, so we feel forcing a senior to move at this time in their life is the wrong thing to do.â€? “I hoped that by creating a full continuum of care we would VROYH OLYLQJ SUREOHPV ,W PD\ QRW KDYH DWWUDFWHG WKH EHVW ÂżQDQcial return,â€? laughs Don. “It is expensive because the licensing is rigorous. In the early days, Don entertained residents by singing “Tiny Bubblesâ€? in tribute to his Hawaiian namesake. Candy is a professional pianist and she played for residents at every opportunity. “The residents loved her music so much,â€? says Don. “They were all seated an hour before she would arrive from UBC – all 150 of them.â€? At that time, Candy was studying to go into medicine. She wanted to make lives better. It soon became apparent to her she could do exactly that by going to work for the family business. “I always loved being with seniors,â€? she says. “Even when I was four years old, I would talk to family friends who were in their eighties for hours while the other kids were running around playing.â€? Don has three daughters. His eldest and youngest both work with him. “It’s a good thing because I never miss them and they never miss me,â€? laughs Don. “They enjoy what they do and they are totally independent in what they do. In the company, I never treat them as daughters.â€? “I was happy because I saw [Candy’s] passion for this. I saw she really enjoyed the work. Seniors’ Residence or Not?
How to Support a Parent’s Decision
BY KATE ROBERTSON

elping a parent make the move into D VHQLRUVÂś UHVLGHQFH FDQ EH D GLŕľścult, emotionally-laden process. This will be especially so if the decision has been prompted by the death of one of our parents, or because we’re noticing declining health and memory issues that make caring for themselves RU WKH IDPLO\ KRPH GLŕľśFXOW Having patience with the process is paramount. You will want to acknowledge it can be an extremely sensitive issue that can cause rifts between family members, resistance from the parent and feelings of guilt in us. In the shortWHUP LW PD\ VHHP HDVLHU WR SXW Rŕľľ WKH GHFLVLRQ knowing the physical move and downsizing could take a monumental amount of work, energy and emotional strength. Deborah Harsant, Business Development and Sales Support Manager for PARC Retirement Living in Vancouver, reminds us that sometimes it’s not the parent who is against the move. “Sometimes, adult children don’t see their parents as having grown old, or they have misconceptions about retirement communities and think these residences are places where ‘old folks’ sit around in geri-chairs.â€? To initiate discussion, Harsant advises that you would never want to spring on your parent that you are going to see a retirement residence, and you don’t want to “tellâ€? them it is time to move or that they are too old to live on their own. Rather, it is best to open the conversation with some questions like: How are you managing the house, Mom? Do you wish you had more people around during the day to socialize with? Are you comfortable moving around the house on your own? “It’s all about asking questions about how they feel about their life and living conditions at the moment, and if they would like something to be GLŕľľHUHQW ´ VD\V +DUVDQW She emphasizes this is a major lifestyle change for most seniors, and probing into how they feel about their life is critical because, otherwise, it is more likely the parent will shut down emotionally and refuse to discuss the idea if they feel pressured. +DUVDQW DOVR FODULÂżHV LW FDQ EH KHOSIXO LI WKH IDPLO\ LV IXOO\ HQJDJHG ZLWK WKH SDUHQWÂśV GHFLVLRQ ,Q WKH HQG WKH ÂżQDO GHFLVLRQ should be left to the parent. ago (thank goodness with all of us baby boomers hurdling towards our senior years), ranging from independent living to fully assisted residences. Together with your parent, make an appointment with the residence’s retirement living consultant, go for a meal, talk to their health support services, and get copies of their brochures, which share valuable information. “We also encourage people to attend special in-house events with our residents, because our residents are gregarious ambassadors always eager to share their homes and lifestyle with those who are in the decision process,â€? says Harsant. “They have been through it, too!â€? During the process, families will also want to stay positive and focus on what will be gained by the move, rather than what’s lost. According to Dave Sinclair, builder and board member for Legion Manor Victoria, these tips can help everybody with the move: remember, the new home is essentially like a condo with the exception that if they need that extra bit of help, it is right there for them; have all family members do a tour of the new residence to put their mind at ease; move in familiar pieces of furniture and pictures from home; and have the family visit as frequently as possible, so they can also become more at ease with the new home. 2EYLRXV EHQHÂżWV WR PDNLQJ WKH PRYH LQFOXGH OHVV KRXVHZRUN

hen we are young, living with our parents is accepted as a perfectly normal arrangement. But, as we grow older, and our aging parents start to depend on us for support, living together under one roof can take on a new complexity, even though the same people are involved. For 13 years, I lived under the same roof with my motherin-law. My husband and I jointly purchased a home with his mother and turned a roomy split-level house into two living VSDFHV WKDW JDYH DOO RI XV RXU SULYDF\ DQG VWLOO R൵HUHG DQ HOHment of supportive togetherness.
People I meet often say, “I couldn’t do that,” and I agree it’s not an arrangement that works for everyone. For instance, I doubt I would have done as well if it had been my mother moving in with us. But this situation worked well for us for over a decade. My mother-in-law was fairly independent and liked her privacy as much as she respected ours. When my mother-in-law became less mobile, she made the decision to move into a senior residence in a community where she had spent over 50 years raising her family and where she still had many friends. There, she felt she would be able to

But before you make the decision, you need to think through all the pros and cons. Having lived in this type of situation increased my awareness about what works and what doesn’t so, in 2007, when I published a book about housing for seniors, I was able to draw upon many of my own experiences. Among your considerations should be the level of compatibility between those who will reside together and what would happen if the care needs change. You cannot anticipate everything. hey are old and hold mysteries. Stories sad and otherworldly are pressed deeply into the fabric of their being. They are the haunted pubs of Vancouver Island and the Salish Sea. Numbering more than the nine listed here, they all have charms above and beyond a haunting presence to make them worthy of stepping through their doors.

From ghostly taps on the shoulder to eerie noises emanating from the attic and chilly auras, the past lingers, yet, in no way deters from the welcoming appeal of this impressively restored mansion. Mike, the bartender here since 1988, spoke of the female ghost that occupies one of the stalls in the women’s washroom and occasions the pub proper; a contention supported by experience and psychics.
The Bent Mast – 512 Simcoe Street, Victoria Built in 1884 by a Hudson Bay man, the years-worn walls have known use as a rooming house, brothel, student residence, erotic gallery and numerous restaurants. Known as the Bent Mast since 1995, its ghostly inhabitants are plentiful. Downstairs resides a grouchy old man who likes to move things around, while the stairway is home to two playful children known to have made themselves visible to children but otherwise annoy adults with their noisy ramblings. Four Mile Brew Pub – 199 Island Highway, Victoria The fourth oldest building in Victoria, the Four Mile was built as a way station along Sooke Road. It has been rated one of the Top 10 haunted buildings in British Columbia and has known use as an inn, cabaret and even a brothel before police raids put an end to that existence. Are you living in an area that doesn’t allow pets, but you grew up with pets around you and would love to have the opportunity to cuddle a cat or walk a dog? Q: Patterns and textures: How can we use them for maximum effect? SIMON CHANG: “Be careful in the bold mixing of patterns and matching of textures. Creative colour blocking should open the path. Keep it simple and don’t let the pattern wear you in or out. The look should have clarity and harmony.” PETER NYGÅRD:
“Be careful with patterns and textures. If they are too heavy, they will bulk you up. For patterns, stick to vertical lines versus horizontal. And when it comes to patterns and textures, keep them away from the hips and waist. They can make a look more fashionable, but be sure to use them to highlight the right places.”
JAN STIMPSON: “Patterns and textures are another way to stay on-trend and modernize a classic look. You know what works for your body shape and you already have favourites in your wardrobe for that reason. Now you can play with texture and patterns to match the seasonal trends. Patterns and prints change with the seasons, so try a printed scarf with your IDYRXULWH RXW¿W WR LQVWDQWly look chic and trendy. You’ll create surprising looks that you’ll love and that’s what is most important. A little print goes a long way.” SL
