THE FAMILY CAREGIVER

Family Caregiving After Facility Placement

C

aregiving does not end when your family member moves into a care facility. You may have more free time and will not have sole responsibility for their personal care, but you will still be providing emotional support, making legal and financial decisions, visiting them and participating in care decisions. You are now part of a care team. Good communication is essential. Clarify what care the facility staff will provide and what is expected of you. The staff may not provide care exactly as you had at home, but your family member’s health has changed and their care needs will be different now. There is no formula as to how often you should visit. Try to establish a balance between visits with activities and simply being together. Determine when the best time is to visit based on your family member’s energy level and the facility’s schedule – such as avoiding medication administration and meals. Share your expertise with the staff. You know your family member better than any of the staff. You have a history with them and can provide the staff with insight into their needs and preferences, so they can best care for them. Become an advocate for your family member to ensure they receive the care they need. Find out what the protocol is for feedback at the facility. Who should you speak to about specific concerns and when is the best time to talk to this person? The Family Caregivers’ Network Society (FCNS) is host-

BY BARBARA SMALL

ing a FREE webinar for caregivers on Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 6:30–8 p.m. facilitated by Maureen Grant, Community Social Worker. The webinar is entitled: “It’s Time for Facility Placement: What Happens Now and How Do I Cope With the Process and My Changing Role?” When the time comes for a family member to move into residential care, the decision leading to this transition can be very difficult for everyone involved. It is often made during a time of crisis, either because the care recipient can no longer safely be cared for at home or because family members are too burnt out. This webinar walks you through the process and provides tips and strategies to manage this phase of care. We will also explore how to work effectively with facility staff while maintaining your involvement as a family caregiver. Register for this webinar by calling the Care-ring Voice Network at 1-866-396-2433 or registering online at www. careringvoice.com. For further information, call FCNS at SL 250-384-0408 or 1-877-520-3267. Next month: BC Caregiving Guide

Kayaker Alan Campbell in Ketchikan Marina.

“T

his is all Alan’s fault,” says paddling fanatic David Maxwell. “I only take credit for coming up with the idea of a longer trip.” David recounts last summer’s adventure, paddling up the coast from Victoria to Juneau, Alaska with his retired buddies Alan Campbell and Rob Zacharias. That’s a distance of 3,000 nautical miles. Fifty-two days on the water. In a kayak. No wonder they call themselves fanatics.

Not that they hadn’t done this kind of thing before. As members of Victoria’s Catfish Kayak Group, David and his pals often undertook week-long excursions, sometimes longer. But they were pleasure cruises, paddling at leisure and camping overnight. If the scenery were stunning, they’d stay awhile. Paddling to Alaska would be more gruelling. They’d adhere to a schedule. But it didn’t start off that way. “At first, it was just Prince Rupert to Port Hardy,” says fellow

fanatic Rob Zacharias. “David and Alan put their heads together and, ultimately, came up with ‘well, we’re going to paddle from Victoria to Alaska, does anybody want to come along?’” Alan Campbell’s motive was simple: “We’re not getting any younger. Let’s do this. Adrenalin junkie? Not really. If I’m a junkie, I’m a nature junkie,” he says. He started planning the route, identifying possible campsites and making sure the trio could pick up staples – dehydrated food and fresh fruit – along the way. Personal safety was a prime concern. Each man would pack his own tent and food just in case someone got injured or dropped out. “We packed everything as if we were going solo,” says Rob. “We wanted everyone to be self-sufficient.” Alan purchased a GPS system, which would allow the folks at home to track their progress. “We had a page that people could go to online and actually watch us move on. They could judge our speed by seeing how far apart the dots were and then, at night, we would use this device to send little text messages that would get posted onto the map. Our families were able to see that and really feel quite reassured.”

That was good news to Rob’s wife, Lisa. Rob had circumnavigated Vancouver Island by himself 10 years earlier and Lisa was not keen on him undertaking another long voyage. “She was actually a lot happier on the second one because it was less dangerous and I had people with me. The thing that she really liked was that we were electronically connected,” he says. The original plan called for other members of the Catfish Group to paddle part way or join the trio en route. Sure enough, a flotilla of friendly faces escorted them out of Willow Bay on May 8th. Once clear of Savary Island, however, the trio were on their own. Long-distance paddling is a different dynamic that scooting around a lake. It means eight hours a day, or longer, on the water, setting up camp and cooking. And because of the solo rule, each man was cooking for himself. Alan and Rob took turns updating their online progress every night before retiring. For Rob, accustomed to hard paddling, it was the little things that wore him down. “What becomes really arduous is hauling gear and setting up camp every night and then tearing it down

and loading the kayaks every morning,” he says. “Paddling becomes the fun part, actually. Unless you’ve got a wind in your face, it becomes a relief to get in the boat and get moving because all that grunt work is done and you get to cruise.” For David, paddling took its toll. “The physical part was exhausting,” he says. “The physical demands, the homesickness, it all kicks off the feeling ‘why am I doing this?’ An 18-day stretch; that’s when it caught up with me. Then after showering, getting warmed up and eating tons of good food, I said well, I’ve come this far, I’ll go on and I didn’t have those challenges after that. My endurance was building up by then.” “You stop and question yourself about exactly what you’re doing out here,” admits Alan. “Is this exactly what you want to do?” It’s cold and wet and the gear is clammy. Alan remembers a point in the trip when the group didn’t start paddling until 3 o’clock in the afternoon. WelcometotoThe theCridge family. Welcome home. rias left the group to return to Victoria by ferry to prepare for his daughter’s wedding. Alan and David continued to Juneau, passing through Stephens Passage. It was perhaps the most memorable part of the trip. The Stephens Glacier had calved sending mini icebergs into Halkam Bay. Their shallow drafts allowed the boats to get up close and personal. “I broke off a piece of one of those icebergs,” says David enthusiastically. “It tasted just like an ice cube.” And finally – Juneau. “We were feeling pretty smug,” says Alan. “Lots of high fives and congratulatory speeches and we’re thinking we’re done. All we have to do now is jump on a boat [an Alaska State Ferry] and end up in Bellingham and we’re practically home.” Paddling home from Bellingham was supposed to be an easy ride, but high winds and busy marine traffic complicated matters. “It was almost harder than some of the sections,” says David. Undaunted, the duo returned to Willow Bay July 30th. “It far exceeded my expectations. I just can’t say how beautiful the coast is and how empty it is,” says Alan. “For most of it, there’s no evidence that humans have ever been there. It was such a positive experience.” “We wanted to inspire other paddlers,” he continues. “We wanted to say ‘if you prepare properly you can do this and you will never regret it. Don’t let your age get in the way.’ If there’s a message, it’s ‘get out there and find a way within your capability.’” David agrees. The trip exceeded his expectations, too. “I’ve got the big, long trip out of my system,” he adds, suggesting he’ll never journey that far again. The jury’s still out on that one. Alan and the gang are talking up another long paddle, this one from Port Hardy and around Cape Scott to the western side of Vancouver Island next SL year. After all, they are fanatics. SENIOR LIVING

very story has a beginning, a middle and an ending – preferably, a happy one. This is actually two stories and they are both true, but only one has a happy ending. The first story begins in Toronto of the 1950s as our heroine Gloria Allan was launching her first great adventure as a young woman. Our second story has an exciting beginning and a tortuous middle full of intrigue and games of power, of kings and armies and candlelit lovers in the palaces of Vienna. That story is inside our first. With an education in accounting, Gloria could not resist the lifelong voice calling her to a career on the page. She wrote articles for some magazines and even worked as a cub reporter. “Jobs were hard to find for a woman,” she says, “and the pay was small.” As it often does in a good story, fate intervened. She met a handsome, ambitious fellow named James Allan. They fell in love and married. James had an opportunity to help start a small oil company. At that time, the undersea deposits of oil and gas off Newfoundland were nothing more than whispers and technical gossip. In a few years, that would change and so would the life of our heroine and her young family. And that’s a very good beginning. The middle of the story opens in the Maritimes where Gloria and James were riding the drive to find and recover oil off the east coast. The company began doing business with European partners and Gloria found herself the hostess and friend of affluent and important people on both sides of the Atlantic. “We suddenly became friends with some pretty powerful people in the oil business. We’d give dinners for Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and his wife, Mila, Newfoundland Premier John Crosbie – people like that.” With the international nature of the oil business and the need for European capital, Gloria and James took their family to London. “I loved Europe,” says Gloria, “especially London.” As she supported James in his demanding career, Gloria found precious time for herself in dusty old bookshops. In an ancient store in London, Gloria discovered a volume about Elisabeth Sisi, the Empress of Austria. In 1854, Elisabeth was the fiery 16-year-old bride to the most important royal in Europe, Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria. She was at the pinnacle of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. When she died in 1898, she was also the Queen of Hungary and Princess of Bavaria. Some saw her as a spoiled royal determined to be unhappy while immensely wealthy. Others saw her battles with an unfaithful husband, and considered her a martyr before her time. “Her story had it all,” says Gloria. Eccentric rulers, palace intrigues, political machinations and astonishing wealth. It was the kind of historical record Gloria loved. “The best part was it was all true!” says Gloria. “It was a record written by the Sisi family – right down to the names of their coach drivers.” Gloria found Elisabeth fascinating and began collecting more books about the Empress and life among other royal families. She kept making notes and soon found herself the keeper of another

Real Estate Relief

S

elling a primary residence, whether downsizing or moving into a senior residence, can be a big deal, especially for folks who haven’t done it for a while. Fortunately, help is at hand. Carol Cluff is a realtor with HomeLife Benchmark Realty in White Rock/ South Surrey. She figures 75 per cent of her clientele are aged 50+ and, in order to service this demographic, Cluff went back to school to become a Seniors Real Estate Specialist. The course helps realtors understand the needs of seniors by drawing upon the expertise of, among others, CPAs, estate planners, and lawyers. Cluff attended classes at the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board’s offices in Surrey, wrote the exam and aced it. She is now a certified seniors real estate specialist, specializing in transactions that involve seniors, their children and their families. “It’s all about understanding the characteristics of each generation,” she says. “Each of them has to be treated with a different type of marketing and communication.” Cluff says younger seniors tend to be comfortable with cellphones and messaging, while older vendors tend to be technologically challenged. “They don’t text. They prefer to communicate by phone or face-to-face. My job is to simplify the process as best I can so I ask them how they’d like to communicate.” Next, she evaluates the nature of the transaction. Downsizing is one thing but moving from a home into a residence is another. “With people like that you have to be very careful,” says Cluff. “They sometimes feel they’re losing their independence, so it’s a very emotionally charged situation.” For those who have lived in their home for a long time, there’s a sense of displacement, loss and bewilderment at the prospect of renovation or demolition. “In many cases they just can’t understand why anybody wouldn’t love their house the way they do.” Cluff says she takes the time to make each client feel comfortable with the process. Oftentimes, adult children will be there as well, accompanying Mum and Dad in an advisory role and, while Cluff acknowledges the extra support, she says most of her clients want to make the financial decisions on their own and she has to respect their wishes. “That’s something I ask my older clients when I meet them for the first time. Do you have your family support in this move and would you like them involved in the process? Ultimately, if that 83-year-old who has hired me to do the job for them doesn’t want family interference, then I can’t

14 12

SENIOR LIVING

involve the family.” Cluff says she keeps that thought in mind even when the child has Power of Attorney. “That Power of Attorney is involved in every stage of negotiation, every conversation and every signing but, ultimately, it’s the owner you’re representing and you don’t want them to feel they’re being left out of any conversation.” Victoria realtors Cheri Crause and her partner Rick Hoogendoorn represent Royal Lepage Coast Capital Realty on Oak Bay Road. They, too, have a large senior clientele and say later-in-life transactions require extra care and consideration. “You have to be mindful of the history they have in their home,” says Hoogendoorn. “Their kids were there. There’s an emotional connection to the home. This is a big deal.” “What do I do next?” is a familiar refrain, says Crause. She tells her older clients it’s not necessary to hire a staging company – it’s an added expense – but she does insist on tidying up the place and clearing away clutter. And that often means sifting through family mementoes, keepsakes and photos, an emotional and time-consuming process. That’s when the kids or the rest of the family can pitch in. “I always caution people that it’s going to take longer than they think,” says Crause, “because they run into sorting and packing. Everything has a story. You’re making decisions on who gets what and where it goes.” When it comes to negotiations, Crause agrees with Cluff. It’s common for parents to bring their children to the real estate office, often with mixed results.

“A lot of times, they ask for advice and some children are really good. They step back and say, ‘Mum can deal with this.’ On the other hand you do run into the ones that are trying to push Mum or Dad in a certain direction and there’s resistance. They’re just pushing Mum to make a decision and they’re impatient, whereas, with seniors, I find you need to give them space and time to make the decisions.” And yes, the children can be overly argumentative, in the mistaken belief they are protecting the parent. “Sometimes, I’ve had to go and have a private conversation with the child because ultimately my representation is to the owner on the title, which is usually the parent.” Lisa Redding represents Pemberton Homes on Cloverdale Avenue in Victoria and, like the others, reckons that half her clientele are 50 years of age and over. She starts seeing kids advising their parents at a later age, when the parents are in their 70s. “That’s the biggest obstacle that we come across – the children being very protective of Mum and Dad – and I’m exactly the same way,” says Redding. “I’ve got my 84-year old Mum and Dad with me and I’m very protective of them, so I understand that concern. You do have to work with the adult children, but the adult children have to understand that, by law, we must be dealing with the people on title.” “I believe everybody needs to be treated with respect,” adds Cluff. “Everybody has an opinion. It’s a conversation. If that adult child doesn’t like my style or my pricing, they’re free to get another quote.” As for seniors surviving these later transactions, “I think they should ask a lot of questions and take their time making decisions,” she says. “And, above all, they shouldn’t feel they’re being rushed.” “I feel this is a business where good communication is absolutely critical and we need to trust each other,” says Cluff. “I need to act with the highest of ethics, especially with seniors, and that’s the SL way I operate my business.”

Living a Social Life Housing

BY VERNICE SHOSTAL

L

iving alone for eight years after her husband passed away, Lynne Lipka says she didn’t know, until she ended up in the hospital with people around her, how much she missed socializing. Since moving into Oak Tree Manor last August, Lynne enjoys “a wonderful social life.” “People are so friendly and kind, and there’s a vast difference to what my life was before,” she says. “We play cards, go on trips to the mall and go out for lunch.” Often, we hear that someone who was hanging on to their independence in their own home was also depressed and intensely isolated. Once they move into a community setting, they discover a new enthusiasm for life. In many ways, their quality of life and their emotional state improve immensely. Executive Director of Legion Manor Greg Askham says new residents can be shy and quiet when they first move in. “This is a totally new living experience for most of the residents and it does take some getting used to, but later, most open right up and start to socialize with their fellow residents,” says Askham. “All people, no matter what age group, need social involvement with others,” he continues. “Today’s retirement communities offer many different types of social and spiritual information, exercise and inspirational activity programs.” It is all about choice for the resident. “There is nothing better than walking into the dining room or an activity hearing laughter and seeing the residents having a good time.” When she saw the great impact a move to a community had on the life of her father-in-law, Terraces on 7th Retirement Residence’s Marketing Manager Wendy Walker was prompted to turn to a career in seniors housing. “The advantages of living in a retirement residence and socializing with peers are tremendous,” she says. “Most seniors discover a new lease on life with a much improved quality and sense of security and well-being.” Perhaps the best advantage of living in a social setting is the opportunity to do things seniors would not be able to do if they were living alone. In addition to the fitness equipment and fitness classes available, social outings add to the fun of socializing, Walker says. Nanaimo’s Oak Tree Manor General Manager Gord Biddy notes that “people tend to become withdrawn in isolation due to diminishing self-worth, particularly those who were outgoing all their lives. They become depressed and feel there is nothing left to live for.” These people “blossom” when they are surrounded by others of their age group. “An isolated environment offers little feedback or opportunities for a senior to discuss how they feel other than through an occa16 14

SENIOR LIVING

sional visit from a home support worker or meal delivery person. A social environment, on the other hand, allows seniors to make friends and acquaintances easily. They then have someone to discuss their joys and heartaches with the knowledge that others share similar circumstances,” says Biddy. At Alexander Mackie’s Cherish Living, President and CEO Micky Fleming finds that seniors smile more than they did when they first moved in. “Isolation feeds depression, loneliness and boredom,” says Fleming. “A social environment supports engagement and connecting.” Using the Handidart or their own bus, Alexander Mackie residences will arrange for groups or singles to go wherever they want to go. For groups of six or more, the residence will organize transportation to whatever event the seniors choose. In-house functions are for residents and guests. Trillium Care Marketing Manager Lesley Bidlake feels the best advantage for seniors living in a community is that someone is always watching out for them to see signs of illness or changes that need attention right away. One of the great advantages of living in a social environment is the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities and to travel or go shopping with friends. “In a social setting, seniors are happier as they engage in conversation with staff and speak with table mates during meals,” she says. “Everyone deserves to live an abundant life,” says Marc Kinna, CEO at Shannon Oaks Vancouver and Victoria. “As we age, we lose the ability or accessibility to do things we love. That is a factor of living in isolation that can change when someone lives in a community where some of the assistance is in place. When you’re in isolation, often you can get into a downward spiral where isolation can lead to lesser activity and can lead to depression and impact physical ability and physical wellness and nutrition and malnourishment.” At Shannon Oaks, church groups from different denominations provide services so residents can participate without leaving the residence. “Spiritual life is part of an abundant life,” says Kinna. When seniors move into the Peninsula Retirement Residence in Surrey, Lifestyle Consultant Diane Toth says, “Most often we notice that their confidence is improved. They become more confident making friends and learning new things. We want them to realize they’re not too old to learn something new, or to be silly. Our role is to support them to live life fully every day – however that day looks for each resident.” Katie Head, Marketing and Communications Manager of Leisureworld, shares a quote from Marta Owsik, Project Coordinator (Centre for Elder research, Sheridan College) who says, “Prior to taking part in the community of Learners program, many participants

expressed that while moving into retirement living was a difficult adjustment, at first, it became a positive experience with opportunities to meet new people, become part of a community and get involved in activities.” “Seniors living [alone] can lead to significant issues of depression and an inability to care for themselves,” says Michael Hayward, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Amica Mature Lifestyles Inc. “When that senior has spent most of his/ her lifetime interacting with others, the quickest sign of improvement is a renewed interest in being social and some elation in having a peer group to spend time with.” From a resident’s perspective, 87-year-old Doreen Burrows, a retired social worker, says no one is “independent,” but “interdependent.” She enjoys living at Amica at Douglas because the residence “affords opportunities for companionship on community outings to parties, the art gallery, symphony, shopping at Sears, Mayfair and the drugstore because the facility bus has planned events for the residents’ pleasure and well-being.” Living in a social setting, seniors rediscover old hobbies or take on new ones. They develop new interests by participating in community activities such as dancing lessons, choirs, bible studies, chapel services, book clubs, outings, and enjoy groups that come in to perform. They get involved in exercise programs and their quality of life improves. Depending on the location and the residence, most offer an array of activities including entertainment such as pub nights with a piano player, theme nights and theme dinners, picnics in the summer, outings that range from tours of the Christmas lights and cherry blossoms to the Sea to Sky Gondola (even with walkers) to museums and restaurants and trips. In most communities, the activity calendar has so many things on it that it is not possible for a resident to do everything that’s available. According to government health research, social integration and participation of older adults in society are frequently seen as indicators of productive and healthy aging. It is widely accepted that social support has a strong protective effect on health. Most human beings keep better physically and mentally when they remain in contact SL with other human beings.

MAKING THE MOST OF THE DIRECTORY O

ur goal in designing this guide is to develop an easy-to-read resource that helps those seeking housing and care solutions (for themselves, a friend or family member), to establish a solid starting point for understanding the seniors housing market. The directory is arranged into regions, with residences listed alphabetically within each region. We use three housing categories to define the residences – Independent/Supportive, Assisted Living and Licensed Care.

Independent/Supportive Living

g (I)

Independent/Supportive Living includes a combination of housing and hospitality services for retired adults who are capable of directing their own care. Housing units typically provide a private living space with a lockable door, monitoring and emergency support, optional meal services, housekeeping, laundry, social and recreational opportunities. Housing units may be rented, owned or life-leased, depending on the structure of the residence. The Independent/Supportive Living category includes privately owned, non-profit and subsidized housing.

Assisted Living n (A)

By law, all Assisted Living residences must be registered with the Assisted Living Registrar of BC. Assisted Living residences offer housing, hospitality services and personal assistance to adults who can live independently but require regular help with daily activities. Accommodation can range from private rooms with lockable doors in a home, to an apartment-style building with private self-contained suites, usually their own bathrooms and cooking facilities. The residence provides a place where people can eat together and socialize. Assisted Living operators provide five hospitality services: meals, housekeeping, laundry, social and recreational opportunities and a 24-hour emergency response system. Residents also receive personal assistance with activities of daily living, such as eating, dressing, bathing, grooming, mobility and reminders or assistance with medications. Assisted Living is intended for people who are able to choose and direct their own care. Assisted Living services are delivered in both publicly funded residences (subsidized by VIHA and BC Housing) and in non-publicly funded (private pay) residences, in which residents are responsible for all costs. Some residences have both publicly funded and non-publicly funded units.

Licensed Care ď ľ (C)

Licensed Care units provide accommodation, care and supervision for retired adults who are no longer capable of directing their own day-to-day activities. Licensed Care settings typically provide a combination of housing and hospitality services, as well as extensive support services. These settings include intermediate care facilities, multilevel care facilities, extended care hospitals and private hospitals. Services may be delivered by private or non-profit organizations. Some units offer government subsidized care options. Care levels are determined by the health care requirements of the individual and could include: Complex Care; Intermediate Care Levels I, II, III; Multi-level Care; Extended Care; Special Care; Palliative Care or Respite Care. Great effort is made to be as accurate as possible, however, mistakes can occur and we apologize for any errors or oversights. This information should be used as a guide and reference only. We have provided contact names and phone numbers so you can verify that the information is correct and current. Residential Foodie Facts BY JANE CASSIE

P

ortabella mushrooms stuffed with local crab and goat cheese. Succulent prime rib complimented by Yorkshire pudding and a medley of veggies. Duck confit, Dungeness crab cakes, braised short ribs. I salivate over the line-up of delectable edibles. Being a travel and food writer has its delicious perks. But when the editor of Senior Living magazine asked me to write this residential foodie piece, I hesitated, thinking it would be a challenge to conjure up a mouth-watering overview. Boy, was I wrong! The fabulous fare at these four chosen retirement establishments could be dished up at any five-star eatery.

The Chefs Make it Happen Lewis Hawley has been creating cuisine for four decades in the Lower Mainland. He was the executive sous chef for the BC Pavilion at Expo ’86 and executive chef at the 2010 Winter Olympics. For the past two years, he has held this esteemed position at Astoria Retirement Residence in Port Coquitlam. Hawley oversees four cooks and two prep team members, and works alongside Lanny Lipson, the Hospitality and Culinary Services Consultant of Leisureworld Senior Care Corporation. “All of Astoria’s menus are designed with our Zest for Life™ philosophy,” says Hawley. “This concept puts the resident at the centre of everything we do as we promise to honour their choices and provide them with opportunities.” Tailor-made portions, low-sodium soups, à-la-carte items and the use of fresh herbs from the Astoria’s summer garden are just a few of the integrated offerings. Chef Ullrich Tilly is also a lover of homegrown ingredients. This European-trained chef has over 40 years’ experience in high-end hotels and restaurants. After training in classical French cuisine, he successfully operated his own French Restaurant in Wiesbaden, Germany. He then took over the Executive Chef position in the Mitsubishi Company Restaurant, overseeing 300 employees. In 1995, he moved with his family to Vancouver, where he worked as Chef Instructor at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts. Since 2007, Chef Ullrich has been the Head Chef of Victoria’s Legion Manor. “[Chef Ullrich] strongly believes in knowing where the food comes from,” explains the residence’s past President Dave Sinclair. “And makes each meal from scratch.” A sous chef and two cooks join this chef in his kitchen, one that also incorporates the use of organic and free-range products. Similar natural goodness is infused into mealtimes at Nanaimo’s Oak Tree Manor. Holly Forbister has been the Resident Chef since 2009, when this residence opened. Prior to 36 34

this, she worked at a complex care facility and managed her own restaurant on the Sunshine Coast. With the help of her two cooks, most of the fare, including the baking, is homemade, using fresh ingredients. “Salt is used sparingly if at all,” says Gordon Bibby, the residence’s General Manager who has 22 years of experience in the senior housing market. “The weekly menus are published in advance, so residents can choose alternatives ahead of time should they not care for a particular entrée.” Farm to Table at Terraces on 7th.

With so much recent emphasis on local harvests, it comes as no surprise that the Farm-to-Table trend has made its way into this sector of the community. Vancouver’s Terraces on 7th, (a Retirement Concepts residence) offers two distinct Farm-toTable Premium menus, in addition to their regular menus, every week. “We use as many local in-season ingredients as possible,” Marketing Manager, Wendy Walker, passionately explains. “Residents renting at Terraces receive eight complimentary Farm-to-Table menus a month.” Executive Chef David Smith plans all the menus with the assistance of two full-time and one part-time Chefs de Partie, one part-time Commis Chef and Corporate Executive Chef Wolfgang Schmelcher, CMC. Smith attended Le Cordon Bleu School in London, England, and over the years has worked on cruise ships and in restaurants and hotels throughout Australia and Canada. needs to consider. How do these residences meet them all, while maintaining the tasty flavour? And how do they keep track of those who have appetites and those who don’t? The Astoria accommodates a variety of dietary restrictions and assesses each new resident when they move in. They also access a dietitian when clients are dealing with any specific medical concerns. “Every menu includes Zest for Life™ options, identified by our healthy choice symbol,” Chef Hawley explains. “And many of our featured desserts are fresh-baked, so residents can enjoy gluten-free and sugar-free treats.” Nutritional profiles are completed on every resident and special diets are posted in the kitchen, so all cooks and servers are aware. Healthy ingredients and heart-smart goods are also incorporated into the Legion Manor’s menus. Chef Ullrich produces two different entries at mealtime. Each is cooked from basics and dietitian approved. The portions are suited to varying appetites and careful note is taken of every resident’s intake. A few of their five-star favourites include rack of lamb Provencal doused with rosemary glaze, pan-seared halibut topped with papaya salsa, and slow-roasted prime-rib seasoned with peppercorn sauce. Hmmmm, yum! By maintaining a close relationship with their residents, Oak Tree Manor is also familiar with the eating habits of their residents. “It’s impossible to make people eat food they don’t care for,” says Bibby. “So we try to strike a balance between what’s good for them and their preferences.” Specialized selections range from caloriereduced to diabetic choices. And Chicken Parmesan is an in-house favourite – as well as six regularly featured desserts. Now that’s decadent! Terraces on 7th offers special diets on request. The home-style menus are balanced with proteins, fruits and vegetables, prepared in various ways. “We make all of our soups and stocks,” Wendy Walker reveals. “Over 90 per cent of our food is prepared from scratch.” Although their food is not highly seasoned, Walker promises it’s flavourful. They source out as many local ingredients as possible, including region-

Correction Notice The article “All the World’s a Stage,” which appeared in the January issue, contained a few errors: Director Tony Cain’s sloop is 35 feet long and not 5 feet long. Michael Gosselin is the Associate Producer and ASM; and the Sound Designer is Tim Watters. Diane Keating (not mentioned) is responsible for the costume designs. In the article “A Rollicking Good Time,” BCSGS Zone 1 Registrar Andrew Reeve’s name was misspelled. We apologize for these errors and any inconvenience they may have caused. 38 36

Let’s Celebrate! Special events, birthdays, holidays. All of these residential communities roll out the food spread when it comes to the traditional festivities. But what unique culinary events have they hosted? What about a steak and lobster feast in honour of the Canadian veterans on Remembrance Day? Or Cook for the Cure, in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Astoria takes credit for these edible events. “Both national and cultural holidays are also incorporated into our menus,” says Chef Hawley. “We have Asian specialties to honour Chinese New Year, Indian dishes to celebrate Diwali and traditional fixings every Thanksgiving.” The Legion Manor also does their share of dolling out the international fare. Japan, China and Germany are just a few of the countries featured in their monthly theme nights. A dining room is available for private family functions – and the welcome mat is rolled out when officials come to call. “We’ve served two Lieutenant Governors,” Sinclair says with pride, “as well as many senior officers of the armed forces.” It’s all about location for Oak Tree when the annual bathtub race comes to town. “From our patio, we have an excellent view of the starting line,” says Bibby. “It’s a perfect venue for our annual pancake breakfast.” Summer barbeques and a dinner magic show are also a couple of their special-themed entertainment nights. Like the others, Terraces on 7th celebrate every holiday with a bountiful spread: Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter are a given. Add in Valentine’s Day, Robbie Burns Day, St. Patrick’s Day and special events like the past Winter Olympics in Russia, and there’s some foodie fun every month of the year. Yes, being a travel and food writer may have its delicious perks, but by living in any one of these adult communities you get the flavours without the flying! Make Your Home Safe for Independent Living Are you a low-income senior or a person with a disability who wants to live safely and independently in the comfort of your home? Do you have difficulty performing day-to-day activities? Does your home need to be adapted to meet your changing needs? If so, you may be eligible for financial assistance under the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program.

It was my 50th-something birthday and he was hoping to couple the special occasion with a little golf action. We had stayed in the manor house, where all five sumptuous guest rooms combine a piece of the past with creature comforts of the present: Fine antiques, thirsty robes, cushy beds (one of which belonged to the famous opera singer, Dame Nellie Melba). Each room is personalized and named after a family member and all boast a stunning panoramic view. The author enjoys the golf course without moving a muscle.

Find out today if you are eligible and if you meet all of the requirements as a low-income homeowner or as a landlord applying on behalf of an eligible tenant.

Overlooking this groomed strip of greenery is Nelson’s cabin, one of Rowena’s four cozy abodes that offer the utmost in privacy and pampering. Beneath its vaulted ceiling, we’ll find every primal necessity to rekindle the romance: a welcoming local cheese platter and bottle of wine for celebrating our togetherness, a stone fireplace to help ignite a little heat, an oversized Jacuzzi for double-dose soaking and a bountiful breakfast, hosted in the manor, so we can refuel the next day. And, of course, there’s that focal point – a cushy, comfy King, which… well, you’ll have to use your own imagination for that one. Our private deck may end up being my favourite perk, though. From here, we’ll be able to watch the stoic sandpipers, abundant birdlife and all those gregarious golfers – without moving a single SL muscle! e all know the importance of regular physical activity. But there are some of us who either hate it, and/or just don’t have the time. The good news is exercise doesn’t have to be inconvenient, painful or time consuming. And you don’t even have to leave your house. Gentle to moderate exercise is just as health boosting as intense exercise. If you’ve never been very active, start small. Think of ways to add extra activity into your day. Here are some suggestions: Strengthen your abdominal muscles. Lie on the floor, on your back. Keep one leg bent at the knee, foot flat on the floor. The other leg remains straightened as you raise and lower it slowly. Raise it about a foot off the floor before you lower it. Keep the small of your back pressed into the floor. You should feel your abdominal muscles contract. Switch legs, and repeat. Breathe deeply. Do as many repetitions as is comfortable for you, while you watch your favourite television program or read a book. Don’t have an exercise bike? Not a problem. Lie on the floor, on your back, with both feet positioned directly above your hips. Pedal your legs, as though you are riding an imaginary bicycle. Keep your feet above your hips, to avoid arching and stressing the lower back (you may have to prop a thin cushion under your hips). For variety, alternate the cycling with the abdominal exercise, or “scissor” your legs to work the inner thigh muscles. As you become fitter, add a challenge by wearing light ankle weights for short periods of time. Most of us own a handy piece of exercise equipment, and don’t even know it. It’s a rocking chair. Pull it up to the television, or grab your favourite novel and rock to your heart’s content. Of course, the secret to getting a reasonable workout is to rock aggressively and contract your thighs and buttocks as you push-off. For the chronic bookworms, read and roam. Try reading while you stride around your back yard. If you have a lot of obstaclefree space, reading as you briskly walk will make the time fly by, and you’ll burn calories. But stay in your yard for safety. Try some of these tips, no matter what your fitness level. You never know, even the most devoted house plant may decide to SL take fitness a little farther than the living room.

THEY DEPEND ON US, AND WE DEPEND ON YOU...

Where Would We Be Without Friends?

W

here would we be without friends? Recently, I was stuck for ideas, so I posted a question on Facebook to help get my imagination flowing. My friends replied with a number of terrific ideas. One idea was to talk about my “gypsy lifestyle.” As this is an issue about housing, it seems appropriate. I am still moving from house to house, playing with other people’s pets, and loving every moment of it. Here are some of the tales (and tails) from the past year. For the most part, I have stayed in the Victoria area. I’ve experienced lots of different houses with a number of different four-legged housemates. Right now, I am in a long-term house sit with no pets, except for a neighbourhood cat that sometimes drops in for a visit and a nap. I’m not sure where he lives the rest of the time, but this seems to be a respite spot for him. Some of the animals I get to play with have become good companions. Tamu and I have shared a house about five times over the past couple of years. Fred and Rosie recognize me almost as much as their people. Just after Christmas, my housesitting assignment came with five dogs of varying sizes. Lots of excitementfor there! While my lifestyle, for some, sounds chaotic and unstable,

it is really quite straightforward and rewarding. I am booked up now until the end of March, and more bookings come in every day. This summer, I plan to housesit in parts of Europe. I have events here in Victoria in May and October, so with those as my boundaries, who knows where – and with whom – I will be spending my time. As February is the month of love and this issue’s topic is housing, does the thought of living as I do make you tremble with excitement or grow cold with fear? Either is okay. One of the things that makes my lifestyle possible are the many friends who are part of my life. So, I will end with the same words that began this column. Where would we be without friends? If you don’t feel you have enough, make this the month that you go out and find more. Maybe one will ask you to housesit for them… and SL lead you on a new path. I look forward to seeing you all at Senior Living’s annual Senior Expo on March 10. For more details, see back cover. Pat Nichol is a speaker and published author.
