THE FAMILY CAREGIVER

When the Person Needing Care Resists Help

A

s a family caregiver, it can be challenging to meet all the needs of the person you are caring for while continuing to make time for your own life. It may become necessary to bring in others to help. This may be met with resistance from the care recipient who does not want someone else caring for them or does not want “strangers” in their home. The key to overcoming this challenge is to talk with your family member to understand their concerns and remember that unless the person is experiencing some cognitive difficulty, they are responsible for making decisions about their own care. This means they may make decisions you wouldn’t make. Still, it is their choice. It can be helpful to first develop some understanding for the care recipient’s situation and why they may be resisting help. Many people find it difficult to accept help because of what it represents to them. By accepting help, your family member will have to acknowledge their illness or frailty and the physical and cognitive changes that come along with it. They are forced to recognize their loss of independence along with the loss of privacy that comes with having others in their home. Imagine what it would feel like to depend on a stranger – or even your own son or daughter – to bathe you or help toilet you. If the person you are caring for resists help, be patient and consider the following suggestions: • Introduce changes slowly. Give them time to accept the idea that they are now unable to do some things for themselves. • Assure them they have a say in the decision about the help they

BY BARBARA SMALL

receive. Few people would feel comfortable with someone else making decisions about their life without consulting them first. • Be clear on what help you are realistically able to offer and what you are not able to do. If you are always available to do what needs to be done, your family member may not see the need for anyone else to become involved. • Sometimes people are more willing to accept in-home help if it is presented as being for the family caregiver, for instance, someone to help you keep the house clean. • If a choice seems irrational to you, try to see why it may be important to them. Listen to their concerns and validate them. SL

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our friend and colleague Barbara Small on May 28, 2015. Barb worked as our Program Development Coordinator for 12 years and, for the past seven years, wrote the monthly caregiver column for Senior Living magazine. She held a Master’s Degree in Counselling from the University of Victoria, trained as a Life Coach and was the author of three self-help books. In her 12 years with the Family Caregivers’ Network, Barb touched the lives of many caregivers. She will be remembered for her warm and kind nature, her no-nonsense approach, her humour and her amazing abilities in all areas of her work. We will miss her greatly. –The Staff, Board and Volunteers of the Family Caregivers’ Network.

BY IRENE BUTLER

arjorie Horne poses before the “Spirit of Sail,” but by the time this sculpture was erected in 1978, the waterfront in downtown Kelowna was old-hat to Marjorie. Her family moved to the valley community when she was four years old and, other than venturing out after high-school graduation until into her late 20s, Kelowna is home and where her caregiving revolves around enriching the lives of seniors. “Life is a building of layers, layers that define and redefine who we are, an evolution of learning,” says Marjorie. She considers her family dynamics in her formative years as gifts. Her dad was a golf pro who developed an 18-hole course in Kelowna and, many times, Marjorie worked in his Pro Shop. “Dad was a hard worker, a man of integrity and he instilled strong principles and work ethic in me,” she says. “I was always in awe of my highly intelligent and creative

mom. She was way ahead of her time in the novel ways she imparted knowledge,” Marjorie continues. Saturday mornings are a fond memory, wherein she and her three sisters would each take a volume from their Book of Knowledge Encyclopedia set and walk back and forth balancing them on their heads. I notice Marjorie still has perfect posture. “Then we’d sit around and study something from our book and present our topic; our reward,” she smiles, “was 10 cents each to run down to the corner store and buy a bag of candy… a very big bag, back in the day.” Marjorie feels she has always possessed a high sensitivity to others feelings and a strong mothering instinct. Her mom experienced extreme emotional highs and lows, and during times of depression, it was second nature for Marjorie (the second eldest) to support her mom as best she could and care for her siblings.

SENIOR LIVING

Volunteering at a nursing home at age 15 and then as a care-aide through high school, her affinity for seniors flourished. She loved their stories and wisdom, and saw sadness when families failed to visit. Marjorie often went to management with ideas for improving methods of care (to which the response was “this is the way we do things”), which added resolve to her rebel spirit to someday make a difference. Another layer of Marjorie’s life was becoming an RN in obstetrics, the opposite end of the human-life continuum. As a nurse in Vancouver, she taught new techniques, such as Lamaze breathing, and was actively involved in husbands being allowed in the delivery room. Getting married and having two sons were highlights during this time. When her boys were still young, the family made Kelowna their home. Once again, she focused her nursing capabilities on those in later life, valuing holistic models of working with seniors. When her youngest son was in kindergarten, Marjorie decided to step out of nursing and spread her career wings as an account executive in an advertising agency, where she had a chance to develop sales skills. A few years later, she relished being a sales rep for a national pharmaceutical company and was privy to top sales training, which totally brought her out of her element. “I’m really an introvert,” says Marjorie. “Cold calls were the worst. I often had to convince myself… ‘You can do this!’” Her successes led to gaining confidence in this field. When, in 1991, Marjorie’s dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer, she left her employment to care for him until his passing. The practicality of care, overwhelming emotions of sadness and helplessness of watching her 6-foot 2-inch dynamic dad wasting away to 90lbs took their toll. One night, in a state of exhaustion, she uncannily found herself in a spiritual experience “engulfed in a vibration of love and a voice saying, ‘your dad is with us now… you can let go.’” Marjorie rushed to the hospital where her dad lay in a coma, telling him “you can go now and everything will be okay.” He fleetingly opened his eyes and smiled. Later, with all the family gathered, sunshine streaming through the window, her dad’s favourite Mills Brothers tune playing – his soul moved on. It proved to be a pivotal point for Marjorie; changing her life completely. She had a need to meditate, and she began to write. The words flowed – about the universe, poetry, filling five journals. She had no idea where these thoughts came from, yet they led her to books on new age philosophies, and finally delving into their practice. “My life lesson during this time was learning to set boundaries and discern which ideas and personal involvements fit my own values,” says Marjorie. She became a breath-work practitioner, facilitated emotional healing groups and took over a wellness centre. A growing distance between Marjorie and her husband ended in an amicable divorce. They remain friends. At this point, she decided to take a year off to evaluate where and how to incorporate her love of aiding seniors through the transitions of later life with her keenness for sales. Becoming the services and marketing manager in a large retirement community fit the bill. As well as constantly learning, she was in a position to promote ideas and implement improved methods to “make a difference.” She stayed with the establishment for 10 years. Marjorie was intuitively nudged to move on from the retirement

community. Her thoughts centred on aging needs and reviews of different services, yet none provided all the answers. With the support of her second husband, Dave, she delved in to months of extensive research into “the global community paradigm shift in how we view aging, with respect for choices and empowerment to go through this transition that none of us can escape,” says Marjorie. She remarks on statistics that show 90 per cent of seniors want to stay in their homes as long as possible, and with a doubling of those over 65 by 2021, there will be a shortage of facilities. Although care homes are a good choice for some, “our” generation have their own ideas of how their elder years will be spent. Marjorie resolutely set about learning how to start a business through the Community Futures Entrepreneur Program – culminating in the opening of CareSmart Seniors Consulting in October 2012. Bringing to the table her life’s experience in many areas of elder care, her service is designed to aide seniors and their adult children to come to the best choices for each situation, including such things as remote monitoring technology for greater peace of mind for both the family and the aging parent who opts to stay in their home. Over the previous decade, Marjorie and her sister, Jean, who also has a nursing background and lives in Kelowna, respecting their aging mom’s wish to stay in her home, had worked out a system for visits and being on-call for emergencies. With her mom’s cancer diagnosis and three separate fractures in six years (one at age 85 while doing her Avon deliveries), making another arrangement was paramount. “Mom was 91 when I took her into my home to care for her during the latter part of 2013 and most of 2014 – the last year of her

SENIOR LIVING

Our magazine is about the indomitable human spirit that aspires to lifetime achievements worth talking about. If you follow us for a while, you will start to discover the admiration we have for people who continue to raise the bar, who make positive contributions to those around them, and to whom age, for the most part, is irrelevant because they are focused on living life to the fullest, not counting their birthdays. Ask those who instruct classes in Pilates and yoga, who pole vault, cycle and run marathons. (We’ve covered it all!) Age is not about limitation, it’s about expansion. It’s about being proud of who you have become. You spent a lifetime in the evolution of you. Celebrate it! If you are an Okanagan resident or business person picking our magazine up for the first time – welcome. And for those who discovered us some months ago, thank you for your continued support. We are honoured to be part of SL the Okanagan community.

life.” This proved to be another mega-turning-point in Marjorie’s life. “A time filled with deep emotional reaches… like diving into a well to the core of my heart, a sharing of mutual love, and realizing how much I was like my Mom.” As her mom became increasingly frail and lost her eyesight, the time struggle with other family matters and her commitment to her business led Marjorie, a born worrier, to overcome the mental hurdle of relinquishing more of her mother’s care to others, and “trusting” this letting go would be alright. Another cathartic release was writing a column in the Kelowna Capital News candidly sharing her heartfelt journey with others going through the same experience. Marjorie’s CareSmart service is currently being expanded and her search continues for positive concepts in the process of aging. “Creative Aging” is a powerful new social and cultural movement she has been involved in, which, together with seeking to understand her own aging process, has brought about her exciting launch of “Graceful Aging,” providing wellness coaching and conscious eldering workshops. Geared to Baby Boomers, the premise is “to start graceful aging at our age, not waiting until in our 80s or 90s, to be aware and embrace the stages, including someday needing to be cared for by others.” At 64, Marjorie’s life layers of fulfilling her caregiver calling with passion, compassion, commitment, and tireless learning shines through, affording a strong voice on behalf of seniors in SL her community and beyond.

Mature women are comfortable in their own skin.

SENIOR SENIOR LIVING LIVING

Designer Simon Chang

Simon Chang approaches fashion like he approaches life – with style, grace and perpetual passion. He loves what he does. And he loves women. This holds true for all the stages of their lives, particularly as they age. or Simon, designing clothes isn’t about market research, surveys, celebrity culture or red carpets; it’s about real people living real lives. His inspiration comes from talking to women – lots of women – about their goals, concerns, experiences and lifestyles. An active listener, he takes what he learns and translates it into workable ensembles that are

sensible, washable, affordable and packable. When it comes to fashion, “women want to make a statement,” says Simon. “They want to be noticed when they walk into a room, yet they want to be comfortable.” To that end, Simon has developed two new lines to better serve his customers and their emerging needs. The first is called Smart Clothes and he has left no detail overlooked. As women’s roles change in our evermutable world, so must their wardrobes. “We are repositioning our job descriptions,” says Simon. More people are working from home offices or shifting from an office-tied career to charitable work, continuing education, hands-on learning experiences, travel and adventure. “I like to see women who take a chance,” says Simon. “In their wardrobe – and in life.” Dress Circle is a line of dresses that retail for under $200. Every dress in the collection can be easily accessorized to change the look and personalize the outfit. It’s that go-to dress in your wardrobe that always looks fabulous and makes you feel great when you wear it. Many women tell Simon their lifestyle is different now. He says it’s a time of rediscovery. And Simon identifies with this renaissance, not only because he listens to the women he meets, but because he, too, is maturing – in his career and his own life. “It’s not a women’s issue, it’s an aging issue,” he says. “And as we age, we learn to say NO.” Simon, the designer, is no longer a hungry up-and-comer trying to make a name for himself in a competitive and often cutthroat industry; he has proven himself. “I’m having more fun with it,” he says. “I can do whatever I want. It’s more rewarding now. I love hearing from the customer, not the press.” Simon, the man, is enthusiastic about this time of life... even if one finds themselves alone. “This is the time of life you don’t have to compromise. What a privilege! There are no restrictions, no limitations. You make your own decisions; cook for one; create your own menu; make a fuss about you.” He believes we are starting to see a shift in people’s lifestyles where the emphasis is on enjoying your own

company. “You can do whatever you want, so do it now. What an exciting time!” With nests empty and career demands easing, this time of life is all about reclaiming simplicity. Simon says closets are shrinking and consumers are moving towards buying smarter. “Buy less, but buy better,” he says. “Be more daring!” You don’t need a lot. It’s quality over quantity. Gone are the days of having a different pair of shoes to match every outfit. Smart Clothes are all about simplifying and being comfortable, while staying current and stylish. Don’t fuss over trends and body types, says Simon, think about who you are and the statement you want to make. “I’m designing for the woman who has a purpose in life,” he says. “It’s about how we want to re-invent ourselves.”

Simon’s Tips for staying relevant from head to toe: Head For women experiencing thinning hair, Simon recommends natural-looking light hair pieces, extensions and wigs. Check out Raquel Welsh’s line. Beautiful hats can also add to an outfit, create a sunblock and give you a bit of mystery. Get a good hair cut – one that you can manage yourself and always looks great. Silver hair is beautiful, so it’s not about colour; it’s about style. Make-up Keep it simple! Don’t wear too much; don’t make it look too dramatic or over-done. Glasses This is where you can be outrageous. Buy funky readers and have a collection of them to wear with different outfits. It’s an inexpensive, useful and fun accessory. Accessories Necklaces should make a statement; they should speak to you. Wear tons of bangles – be a wind chime and have fun with these. Gloves are fashionable again; give them a try. Hand bag options are phenomenal. Forget heavy, bulky leather bags. Don’t weigh yourself down. Stay mobile. Good posture is important and exudes confidence. Clothing Keep it extremely simple! Be comfortable – in style. Longer skirts and dresses are fashionable now. Buy active clothes; every day clothes. Learn your body and wear what’s most flattering for you. Highlight your fabulous features. Try jersey, which is flowy and dramatic. Simon loves colour on mature women.

The next generation of new designers (every five to seven years) will do something to slim the leg, or widen it with a bootcut, or even bellbottoms because it’s fresh to them. And, really, how many ways can we wrap fabric around ourselves that’s functional? As we get wise to this fashion game, we can make better choices from dozens of options in design, colour and cut — especially if we have been customizing our wardrobe with our own flare for some time. For Fall 2015, these highlights reappeared on the runways and here are some fun ways to play with them and incorporate them into daily lifestyle dressing — even the ’80s high-waisted skirts with neon side panels. Yes, really! How are we going to wear these looks? Simple. Balance out the very chunky knits with slim pants or leggings. Add super bold metallic earrings, but remember to stick to “The 3 Accessory Rule”; large earrings, stunning bracelets, and brightly coloured footwear or handbag – for example. The idea is high impact, but not overkill.

Revive the following items in your wardrobe with these current (recurring) trends: Long blazers are back! (Thankfully, without the shoulder pads!) Add this look to jeans with heels or riding boots and a white t-shirt. Geometric and bold-patterned hosiery Here is a chance to make a strong statement. Hosiery such as this is best worn in portions that suit your leg. Small pattern, slim leg. Wide leg, go more vertical or sheer. These snazzy looks will take any tired dress in your wardrobe and give it new life! The Browns We see lots of coppers and deep maroons; these will pair most effectively with tan, white and your basic blacks – yes, brown and black together does work. Floral Dresses? Take a turtleneck and wear it under a sleeveless dress, patterned florals in winter tones, and add wool or suede to the look using a belt, perhaps, or handbag. Cream – the Winter White Create a chic monochromatic look, but try for embroidered (colour on colour) to add texture to the ensemble. A monochromatic look also allows you to layer and accessorize almost anything! Remember, Fall fashions have the advantage of layering. Check out store display windows and images online to give you further inspiration! SL

Waist? What waist? Fashion secrets about shaping the body are really two parts: scale and illusion. Here are a few tried-and-true styling methods for slimming your waistline in hopes of finding a new solution that works just for you on what to shop for or clothing combinations direct from your wardrobe. By Teresa lindsay

1

Emphasize your neckline or your shoulders This brings all eyes upward. Example 1: A V-neck top that shifts (doesn’t cling to the body). Layer underneath with a camisole, if you wish to keep the décolleté covered. Example 2: Find shift dresses that are sleeveless and have simple construction to the body (shifting over the middle) and draw eyes upward. If you have a dress like this but wish to cover your arms where the muscles are relaxed, use a slimming technique in this area – a set of sheer fabric sleeves that attach in the front at the chest and creates an illusion (check out Simon Chang’s Sleevies).

2

The “Tuck, Belt and Cover” technique Using layers that are fabric appropriate to the season (light cottons in summer, thick cotton, wool or angora in winter), find a tank top or a twin set and wear the tank portion tucked in with a belt or left untucked and belted. HINT: Choose a wider belt to balance out your middle. Skinny belts are not the best for everyone. Then, find a 3/4 length, or cropped, sweater, or wear an opened blouse in a darker shade such as dark grey, navy, brown or black to shift over the side of the body. This way, we can’t really see where your waist or fullest part starts or stops.

3

Elongate Avoid bulking up to hide your waist. Think tunics (longer tops) or wear sweater dresses with tights and add comfortable walking ankle boots (with back or side zippers for easy access). Do this in all one colour – monochromatic – for the best effect. Plus, long slender scarves hanging loose from the neck straight down the body in a dark shade break up the sides of the body. 16 18 16

4

Slimming it down from the underside Using slimming undergarments, such as the “Skinny Britches” by www.spanx.com, you will instantly trim the areas for special occasions, dresses will have a sleeker fit and you’ll avoid muffin tops in jeans or pants. Choose those that are lightweight/semi-sheer (in cream or white). This is not a permanent solution, but a helpful tool for slimming the tummy fast.

5

Hoist the girls Under the rib cage is often one of our most narrow areas, so it is important to wear a bra that lifts and supports to expose this curve. Most women are wearing one cup size too small and the elastic is something that wears out regularly, so re-fit and re-purchase frequently.

6

Side panelling Choose dresses or pants that have two shaded panels. An external panel darker than the inside colour will narrow the body or sides of leg, creating the perfect blocking for colour as an illusion.

7

Heels For special occasions or evenings out, or even with jeans for a lunch date, include a bit of heel. Heels always make us look slimmer. Again, it is an illusion. And it’s easy to do! Wear an A-Line Skirt A wider hemline lines up in proportion to the waist and basically nullifies it. It’s simple. And the opposite is true. Try a loose top and a belt to draw attention to the area. Magic!

8

Eye candy Accessorize with long or short chunky pieces. The proportion game is where it’s at.

Perfect pants A wide waist band (yoke) on pants cuts across the derrière to make your bottom appear smaller. Fabrics are key, so look at the blend of fibres on the tags inside the pants you love at home and make a note to look for that combination blend when shopping, or call around to stores, in advance, for something similar. A straight leg is likely best.

From the inside out Nutritional support from experts about this area of the body is also worth investigating. Find a local naturopathic doctor to test for bloating and sensitivities caused by foods that are not helping your tummy, or not processed well by your system. It’s amazing what happens within a few weeks off grains or starches. These doctors can also give you options about foods that are simple and easy to digest, often raw vegetables. This also saves you cooking time and gives you more time for friends, or going dancing in a new dress! SL

Canada’s top designers weigh in on questions from mature women about how to dress, what to wear, what to avoid and how to look their very best. Each month, we’ll tackle a new question to help you stay stylish and feel great! Have comments or suggestions? Email fashion@seniorlivingmag.com

Q: At our age, how should we approach fashion trends? Join them, modify them, avoid them? Simon CHang: “Fashion trends should always be adapted to fit one’s own style regardless of age. Trends come and go; having a personal sense of style, and knowing what really works for you is always age appropriate.”

Peter nygård: “While it is wise to be selective, (No bare midriff tops, please!) we should feel free to embrace fashion trends. Shop for brands, like Bianca Nygård that interpret the latest trends in a way that is understandable and flattering! In fact, Bianca’s FIT has been specially engineered for the 50+ consumer! Age is only a number… Fashion is all about Attitude!”

Jan StimPSon: “ I feel that all women, no matter what their age, have a unique vision of themselves. As age should never limit a woman’s activity, so should it never impose limits on her sense of style! Women today age more gracefully than in the past; they keep their energy and vigour longer. For this reason, women should embrace and continue to enjoy fashion on a personal, fun, and genuine level. So, join in and modify trends. You should never avoid fashion. If the style fits your personality and mood, go for it! You will be able to carry it off with the proper fit and your sense of confidence.” Barbara’s Boutique and Showroom 2392 Beacon Avenue, Sidney, BC www.badenbadenboutiques.com We carry Simon Chang and Sympli.

the Comox Valley. And new retirement homes are popping up all over the island. The No. 1 attraction of the Comox Valley is the climate. ot long ago, Vancouver Island’s economy was predominantly resource dependent. Most jobs came from logging, mining and fishing. While these sectors are still important, the economic future of our region relies on attracting retirees from around the world. Fortunately, most communities are preparing for our growing population by adding more services and facilities to accommodate seniors. This has contributed to improved financial security in the Comox Valley. According to the Real Estate Investment Network, the Comox Valley consistently placed in the Top 10 best investment locations for British Columbia. The Comox Valley includes the city of Courtenay, the town of Comox, the village of Cumberland, and nearby settlements of Royston, Union Bay, Black Creek and Merville. Denman Island and Hornby Island are also considered part of the Comox Valley. A major boon to the region was the decision to build two state-of-theart hospitals – one in the Comox ValComox Harbour ley and the other 30 minutes north in Campbell River. The hospitals are expected to be completed by June 2017. In large cities, it can be difficult for retirees to find a family physician due to the limited number of practitioners. Fortunately, this has not been a significant concern for residents in

grey and wet, but with WestJet flying directly from the Comox Valley, you’re only a few hours away from sun and sand. Perhaps No. 2 on the list is affordable housing since the

average home in Vancouver is selling for over $1,000,000, while the average home price in the Comox Valley is around $360,000. Studies show the majority of Canadians have thought about retiring outside of the country but, in reality, very few do. With the high cost of travel medical insurance, most prefer to stay in Canada. Ideally situated for those who enjoy the great outdoors, the Comox Valley is the perfect location for those who like to make frequent trips to the “big city.” Victoria, BC’s capital city, is a short two-and-a-half-hour drive away. Vancouver can be reached in a few hours by ferry or a 15-minute floatplane ride that takes you right downtown. This allows for all of the benefits of big city shopping and dining, without all the hassles of traffic congestion and noise. The Comox Valley has become one of the last bastions in Canada where you can enjoy an affordable lifestyle with an abundance of recreation opportunities at your doorstep. The ability to pack away the snow shovel and winter parka is a definite plus, as is the ability to post pictures on Facebook of your golf game in January. One of the concerns many retirees have is that once they move away from their hometown, they’ll lose contact with friends and family. As a long-time resident of Vancouver Island, I can tell you friends and family will be beating a path to your door. Be sure to keep a spare bedroom available. You will be astonished at the number of SL visitors you will have on a regular basis.

Recreation

or many Canadians entering their golden years, recreational opportunities can seem limited. With snow and ice on the ground for half the year in most parts of the country, it can be a challenge to explore the outdoors, let alone maintain an active recreation schedule. For seniors in our region, the opportunities are abundant. Granted, for a few months of the year a raincoat may needed, but it is a trade-off numerous Canadians would gladly accept. From relaxing on beaches in Parksville, landing a Coho salmon in Campbell River, to skiing on Mount Washington, the Campbell River to Cobble Hill region provides a slew of unique opportunities. Where else in the world can you ski in the morning and golf in the afternoon, all in the same day? In December, you can drive from hot beaches to snowbanks in less than an hour, as you make your way up to Mount Washington. This full-service, worldclass resort frequently has higher snow packs than many prominent ski resorts around the world. After your day of fun in the cold and snow, you can escape winter and make your way down the hill to the green, green grass of home. Most activities in our region are year round. The region is host to well-maintained trails, accessible to people in wheelchairs, with lush tree canopies keeping the trails relatively dry. An example of such trails are the ones along the Elk Falls, lo-

cated in Campbell River. Recently, one of the highest suspension bridges in British Columbia was unveiled there, and opened for walking on May 9th. Constructed from an elevated position, this bridge has a full view of Elk Falls, and is over 58 metres high. It can be accessed free of charge. As kids, we loved to explore forbidden places. Well, here is your chance to re-live your childhood and explore a cave network. As a great place to take the grandchildren, and located just outside of Qualicum Beach, the Horne Lake Caves are a unique descent into the rich geological structures of Vancouver Island. Both guided tours and solo ventures, for more experienced cavers, are offered. Spring and summer are the most popular times to visit the caves. If you are feeling adventurous, however, they are explorable during the rainy season when rushing rivers through the caverns’ eroded limestone are sure to elevate the excitement. For fishing, Vancouver Island’s renowned waters are home to both the “Salmon Capital of the World” in Campbell River, and the “Fly Fishing Capital of the World” in the Cowichan River. Fishing on Vancouver Island is definitely a year round activity. For those who own a boat, salmon, halibut, Dungeness crab, and prawns are all within accessible reach. For those who like to fish from shore, there are plenty of opportunities, especially during the spawning runs when

millions of salmon make their way back to their birth river. For rivers and lakes, such as Sproat Lake, Diver Lake and the Campbell River, all that is necessary is a fishing rod. For those who prefer a bit of adventure and want to swim with the salmon rather than catch them, Destiny River Adventures, as featured on the Rick Mercer Report, offers this opportunity from July to the end of September. Some of the top-rated golf courses in our region include Storey Creek, Crown Isle, Morning Star, Fair Winds and Pheasant Glen. It was not that long ago that seniors were expected to sit back, relax and enjoy countless re-runs of Matlock in their golden years. Well, not today’s seniors! We are stronger, faster and smarter than previous generations. Fit for the Adventure

BY EVE LEES

Injury-free Golfing

L

eisure sports, like golf, can give you a good workout. If you skip the electric cart, golfing 18 holes is roughly a 10-km hike that burns around 470 calories – more if you carry your clubs. And the best thing about golf? It’s a sport for all ages and one you can continue as you age. Being physically fit for golf is often overlooked, but it’s as important as in any other sport. Good physical condition will lessen the risk of injury and even improve your game. And if you do injure yourself, you’ll recuperate much faster, getting you back on the course in record time. If you’re just learning to golf, get proper instruction. Bad habits could form, or injuries could result due to improper body mechanics. And the older you are, your muscles are trained to act in a certain way, so you may have to retrain them. Being physically active off the golf course will benefit you when you’re on it. Your legs should be able to endure a 10km hike carrying or pulling a golf bag. Anything you can do year-round to improve your fitness level is an asset. Try to exercise at least 20 minutes, three times per week. Brisk walking, swimming, a light jog, or bicycling are some suggestions. The lower back is a common injury area among golfers, and it’s usually due to weak abdominal (core) muscles. Doing a few abdominal and lower back exercises will take only a few minutes, three times a week. And regularly stretching the lower back. A proper warm up before your game is essential. A warm up gradually takes the body from a resting state to optimal working conditions, by slightly elevating body temperature and increasing blood circulation. If the circulation has increased in your muscles, your body can perform at its full capability. While you’re waiting to tee off, do a few minutes of arm rotations, trunk twists, or swing your club slowly and gradually increase the swing speed. If you’re an avid golfer, you’ve probably experienced a tightening of your back muscles while you play. Try swinging your club opposite-handed while you’re waiting at the tee-off, between each hole. The action will shift the focus off the overused muscles and help maintain muscle flexibility. Avoiding injuries also includes wearing sunscreen (pack it in your golf bag) and sunglasses too. A hat is a good idea, as well, to protect both your skin and eyes. Carry and frequently drink water, and head back to the clubhouse if you notice any symptoms of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke; symptoms may include headache, dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat or confusion. SL Eve Lees was a Personal Trainer and Nutrition Counsellor for 30 years. She is also an avid golfer. www.artnews-healthnews.com

Coffee on the Vine

“E

legant body, long bold taste with a pleasant finish. A buttery mouthfeel.” You may be excused for thinking this is some celebrity connoisseur waxing lyrical about a palatepleasing Napa Valley red. Yet, this vinous description appears on the menu board of my favourite neighbourhood café: The Java Dive. You could see it coming. Somewhere in the ’90s things began to go yuppie, and just as hair snippers morphed into Estheticians and Eyelash Technicians, so waiters became Baristas and a cup of coffee evolved into an art project. Used to be there were only two choices: medium or dark roast. Decaf was added later for the benefit of those customers with compromised taste buds. Following complaints that its coffee was so bitter it caused the muffins to wilt, Starbucks added a fourth option: Blonde Roast. I notice they’ve since dropped this choice. Pity. I suppose they became concerned that some of us less robust types may choke on a giggle when ordering a “tall blonde to go.” While variety may well be the spice of life, I get a trifle irritated having to wait in line behind a customer who orders “A grandethree-shot-pumpkin-and-spice-chocolate-whatsit-with-a-hint-ofcinnamon-and-a-tease-of-nutmeg-hold-the-mayo-and-leave-roomfor-syrup-latté.” Particularly when said customer attempts to pay with his cellphone hashtag thingy, and there’s a glitch and the machine won’t accept it. And then it turns out the guy doesn’t have cash and has to use his credit card, which doesn’t work either. In addition to the ones described earlier, there are another half dozen exotic cuppas listed at The Java Dive. A coffee from Sumatra

is described as “a rich, bold Arabica with lingering hibiscus-scented notes and just a hint of jungle.” Now, I’m not exactly sure where that country is – I was under the impression Sumatra was a crooner – but I’m sure the poor plantation labourers there would be wryly amused to learn that a cup of their product could net its imbiber a roadside suspension in North America. I just hope they don’t start messing with the food. Could it be that some morning hence, I’ll toddle into The Java Dive looking to relax with a beverage and an intact Globe and Mail, only to have a conversation like this? Barista: “What can I get started for you today?” Me: “The usual. A medium medium and a multigrain bagel, please.” Barista: “Coming right up. That’ll be $8.75.” Me: (Choking) “What?” Barista: “$8.75.” Me: “How come?” Barista: “$2.10 for the coffee, $6.00 for the heart-safe, free-range, calorie-reduced, custom-crafted bagel, plus tax.” Me: “Thanks all the same, but I’ll just have the coffee. No charge for the easy-pour, fruit of the barn, dairy-fresh milk or the cheerful, individually-packaged sugar crystals, I trust?” Barista: “None at all, sir. Have a nice day.” If things reach this stage, I plan to just buy a paper, stay home and enjoy a cup of silky-smooth, smile-infused Darjeeling, and a couple of slices of toast with plum jam notes and the subtlest hint of smoke-detector.
