Alma Jean Washington, known to many as “Jean” was born on November 26, 1945 in Luxora, Arkansas to the union of the late Superintendent Cornelius B. Brown and Mother Bertha Mae Casey Brown. To this union she was the fourth of 11 children. The family later relocated to Illinois in 1952. In 1964 Jean graduated from Alton Senior High. Following graduation, Jean attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville where she studied Business Administration. She later went on to work for the Illinois Glass Works. In 1972 Jean began working in the Special Services department within Lewis and Clark Community College. During her tenure with Special Services she served in several roles from childcare support to program administrator. Jean finished her career in the Financial Aid Department with a successful retirement in 1999. During her professional journey she was the constant administrative glue that held together the family business, Washington Auto Sales and Washington Bus Line. Though it was considered to be a home-based business the top-notch customer service was always beyond compare. On July 13, 1968 she was united in holy matrimony to Walter Washington in Alton, Illinois. From their union two daughters; Jana Woodie and Jocelyn Harris, and one son; Walter “Jay” Washington. Jean gave her life to the lord at an early age. She was a member of Brown’s Faith Temple Church of God in Christ (Alton, IL), where she is on record as a founding member served in many capacities over the years. Jean served in her church with passion as the church organist and Minister of Music. She also served in the Greater Western District as the Minister of Music and AIM Chairperson bringing innovative and catapulting ministry ideas and education for the local ministry. She served the “state level” as the Financial Secretary for the Southern Illinois Jurisdiction Music Department serving 3 different administrations(Pastor Wayne Doss, The Late Deacon Kelvin Lenox, and Missionary Eugenia Robinson); she also served as the Minister of Music for the Central Region. She also had the honor and privilege of singing on many COGIC recordings under the direction of the late Madame Mattie Moss Clark. Throughout her years serving in the church she was as particular about how we served in the kingdom as she was about her professionalism in the workplace. She believed that even during rehearsal it was a time to worship God and should not be done lazy. Jean Washington was a lady of class and dignity. She believed that any sleep past 8am was close to laziness. No matter if you were leaving the house or just relaxing you should get up and be dressed for the day. She often displayed her style through her Sunday morning dress and her elaborate “COGIC” hat collection. On Monday June 28, 2021, after 75 years of service, the Lord called her home to be with him. To cherish her memory she is survived by her husband of 53 years Walter Washington of Alton, IL; Two Daughters Jana L.Woodie of Warren, OH and Jocelyn L.(William C.) Harris of Alton, IL, and Bonus Daughter Wateria Hobson (Antoine) of St Charles, Mo; three sisters: Alberta (Michael) Porter of Alton Illinois, Mable Holmes of Lewisville, TX, and Rose Lenox of Charlotte, NC, two brothers: Cornelius (Dorothy) Brown Jr. of Peoria, IL, James Brown of Houston, TX,; fourteen in-laws: E. Catherine Scott, John (Delois) Washington, Ceola (Henry) Coopers, Leroy (Beverly) Washington, Genora (Fletcher) Springfield, Lula (Vernon) Armstead, George (Yvonne) Washington, Flora Washington Spears, Betty (Lee) Elder, Clara Washington Crossland, Dora (Alphonso) Willis, Col. Frederick L. Washington, Leatha Hamilton, and Deonte (Nathaniel) Williams; five grandchildren: Chris Woodie II (Michai), Jordan A.Woodie, Chase D.Woodie, William C.Harris II, and Ava J.Harris; two bonus grandchildren: Gabrielle Hobson and Avori Hobson; and eight greatgrandchildren: London C.Woodie, Milian A.Miller, Chandler A.Rice-Woodie, Maricana D.Miller, Myla B.Woodie, Chase Janá Woodie, Chris D.Woodie III, and Colton R.Woodie; one god daughter Erica Nelson, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Jean is preceded in death by her parents Cornelius and Bertha Brown Sr., her mother and father inlaw Willie and Genora Washington Sr,.Siblings: Hancy Nelson, Zaddie Frison, Christine Harris, Mary Henderson, Anthony Brown, Willie Mae Meeks and Willie Washington Jr., 1 Son, Walter “Jay” Washington three nephews: Sylvester Frison Jr. (Syl), Christopher Harris, Isaac Scott Jr. and 4 Nieces, Joyce Meeks, Vernice “LaGretta” Armstead, and Katrina Scott.
