BIOGRAPHY Graduated with honour as a Master of Science for Advanced Architectural Design at KU Leuven, Faculty of Architecture in Ghent, Belgium. I had a desire to explore art and technology, it came as a natural decision to study architecture. Combining the artistic with the performance-oriented aspects of a building allows me to think about projects in a social as well as a technical way, opening up new opportunities for myself. Travelling has always been a big part of my life. I was born and raised in a family where travelling and gaining international experience is taken for granted. In 2015, I participated in the ERASMUS+ program at Istanbul Technical University in Istanbul, Turkey. As of August to December 2016, after completing my masters, I worked as a researcher in Asunciòn, Paraguay. This was a four-month project titled ‘Infrastructure and territorial transformations in Paraguay between 1960 and 2014’ . I learned a lot about the social impact of architecture as well of infrastructure on a continental scale. During and after my education, I have driven myself into different fields. Thus, I decided to teach myself a new skill each year that contributes to my professional as personal life. As a result, I developed a string attitude towards ‘self-study’. For example in recent years, I have developed various skills such as graphic design, interior design, photography, research and languages by travelling and learning.

Narrative and process are two key concepts that are indispensable to quality. Through these we learn, make and build. Therefore, in this portfolio, I’ll let some short stories do the talking.

SWEETS

Meeuwenplein is one of the twenty-seven bridge houses of Amsterdam. Every SWEET has his own romantic and fascinating narrative into the urban context of a city that is deeply connected to its waterways. The original facade is retained. Adding reflective mirror glass creates a vulnerability that permits the reflective light to reflect and reflect. Maintaining an intimate atmosphere enhanced by warm accents.

Grenzeloos Begrensd

This project took place in november 2015. My fellow students and I went to Graz, Austria looking for a different perspective of the city. Trying to do more than our assignment, we wanted to give life in the city a new meaning.

‘grenzeloos begrensd’ (nl) or boundlessly bounded (eng) is a research on: How we can form a public building designed at the level of the intimate user, to be a mediator between the city and its river landscape without re-creating a barrier between the common areas?

11

UNDERSTANDING HISTORY The idea “bathing in different layers came fourth from combining history and topography. While investigating the bathing culture, I read about the tradition of bathing in the river. I wanted to create a tale about the bathing culture throughout history.

UNDERLAYING LAYERS OF THE CITY The city of Graz is divided in two sections, the rich and the poor Graz, by the river Mur. This is a boundary that reflects the identity of the city, a fenced culture.

13

MITIGATING THE BORDERS At the moment, the borders of the site consist out of high concrete walls and fences. The site is irregularly sized and lays directly next to the backyard of inhabitants. We can create a natural border by giving the plot a new form. The intent is to place a park between the backyards and the site. I kept the bike/pedestrian past, but now it has a more open character, it enters the site without compromising the swimmers.

+ 14

How can we re-integrate the bathing culture in the river?

15

private / public Topography has a strong presence on the site and can be used to create a natural boundary. Buildings on the site have a double effect and serve both the private and the public side of the site.

16

rethinking boundaries Walking or cycling between the canopies of the trees, give passers-by the chance to take a quick look at the site, without the intimacy of the swimmers being compromised. Existing walking and biking paths are optimized, and become neutral ground, to attract both the inhabitants of Graz and the tourists. The path, with a public character, is extended through the ‘private’ atmosphere.

watching and being watched Watching and being watched, from one to another: swimmer, biker, passer-by. Corridors, technical rooms, dressing rooms, lifts, swimming pools, public space, etc. are all connected through the concept. It is a transparent site that encourages the people to interact with each other.

expierence the swimming adventure Designing a swimming pool, is also thinking about the social gathering of the event: coming together, talking, drinking, sunbathing,...

Nature is used as a natural boundary. That way it serves not just one, but two purposes: with this natural way of ‘fencing’, one can both enjoy the beauty of nature and privacy at the same time.

A multiple encounter

The search for an identity in an ethnically diverse city. Metropolitan life reduces people to individuals. Brussels is seen as the urban backdrop of differences. In this city, the differences are a complex composition of cultures, politics and urban life.

Looking for ‘creating a city connection’, we tried combining sports, the ‘last mile’ project and public space. My team and I believed that the combination reflected the busy core of Kuregem.

What is the ‘last mile’ project? ‘Last mile’ is a growing concept that tries to make the transportation of products faster and more efficient. The products are stocked just outside of the city. By using ecologically friendly transportations methods we can then easily get these products to the consumer. The smaller players in the market could benefit by this new way of transportation.

CONCEPT AND PROGRAMS UNITED

Circulation, to live and experience, watching, being watched. A grid of 5m x 5m was used as base to develop the project. By using a grid we could easily build flexible circulation, where we could efficiently reuse spaces for different purposes. Sport fields also consist out of a grid method with dimensions 5m x 5m.

A city is never finished, and Brussels is growing. We wanted to create something that has an influence on the different purposes of a city. We wanted to create connectivity, inside as well as outside.

29

CONCEPTUAL, ATMOSPHERICAL AND DETAILLED UNDERSTANDING

Each of us would develop a part of the building in more detail. We choose materials and made a detailled cross-section of the building that show life inside of the building. My two main materials were concrete and wood. Depending on the atmosphere and function of the room, these materials were used in a different way. Four different scale models were created to understand the building trough conceptual, atmospherical and detailled vision.

Catalyst now and then

Aalst, a multicultural city, lays between two of the most important cities in Belgium, Ghent and Brussels. As Aalst grows, it cries for an identity. Commercialisation and industrialisation are on the rise, how can Aalst identify itself as an upcoming city?

Studioprofessor

Klaas Goris (CoussĂŠe & Goris)

OLD FACTORY SITE The building is a reminiscence of the industry; the original concrete vaults from the eighties are a wink to the history of the city. The materials; steel, concrete, polycarbonate, reflect the industrialisation period of Aalst. Next to the building the light steel structure is kept as an open industrial park. It is this atmosphere that recreates the history of the city.

THE CATALYSATOR History is one part that made the inhabitants - called ‘Oiljsteneer’ - proud inhabitants. In 1890, the population of Aalst worked under appalling conditions in the textile factories. Abused and exploited by the rich for the sake of Adolf Daens, a socialist, stood up against the abuse, and became the man of the people.

URBAN FILTER The square slowly descends towards the heart of the centre. To mix an urban lter with a multicultural program, a slow circulation is integrated. A transparent space between square and water - it becomes clear what the water- front is all about. There are small spots to retreat, where the passer-by is able to make a connection with its surroundings. That part of history may be long gone, but the ‘Oiljsteneer’ will continue the demeanour of Daens.

37

RE-USE HISTORY

In between two parts, with two faces, a transparent space between water and museum is created. It is a border to its context, but also a gradient of transition. Bleachers at the waterside watch the life of the city on the other side. To connect, to create interaction.

Rethinking the narrative

Together with fellow students, we analysed a project, located in a wonderful landscape of elds and woods in Asse, Belgium. The village is peacefull and has the usual Flemish chaos of architecture. In a quiet street, the ‘Serrewoning’ of the architects Verdickt & Verdickt is located.

SPATIAL ABSTRACTION By using photography and graphic abstraction spatial experience becomes dynamic. We unfolded spaces, to understand architecture trough another medium. These pictures tell a narrative and sequencing of connections and boundaries describe movemement of a space. We wanted to show focus, darkness, light, material, colour, rhythm show in one picture. 46

My sincere thanks go out to the people who made all these projects possible. Thanks to my fellow students, studio professors, parents and friends for the unconditional pep talks, cooperation and support. Thank you for your interest. Sincerely, Barbara
