IRIS VAN HERPEN Corporate profile

Iris’ journey in the fashion world started in 2007 when she first launched her label. She graduated from ArtEZ Institute in Aunhem in 2006, and since then she Dutch designer has been applying her ideas towards shape, material and design into the haute couture environment. She explores and creates concepts for her collection with the help of scientists, architects and the application of 3D printing. Iris is art is a great example of the fusion of the old century artisan skills with the new technologies offered in nowadays society. The essence in her creations is on how she’s expresses women’s character and emotions; and extends the shape of the feminine body through her designs. In her website she quotes “For me fashion is an expression of art that is very close related to me and to my body. I see it ad my expression of identity combined with desire, moods and cultural setting.” (Businessoffashion.com, 2014) Her pieces are so unique and extraordinary that they become art, and usually are exposed in different exhibitions around the world, such as Material.World ART in Netherlands in 2011 and currently in FIT Museum in New York - Dance & Fashion Iris took her old collaborations as an inspiration to her new ReadyTo-Wear collections. She already launched three collections that are more wearable, functional and durable, but still represent the true essence of her work. Detailed, unique materials, controversial design and exploration of fashion limitations. (Puikkonen & Digital, 2013)

MARKET POSITION

Iris Van Herpen is a Luxurious fashion brand, focused on apparel and accessories, mainly shoes. Is positioned in the Luxury Market, along with the biggest Haut Couture Houses. Although the new focus on Ready-toWear, Iris Van Herpen is still a brand dedicated to innovative haute couture pieces. (Fashionbi.com, 2014) Her innovative and unique garments have been compared to Alexander McQueen work (where she made an internship) making it, the biggest competitor for the brand. Like Alexander McQueen Iris’ focus on recreating the women silhouette and incorporating organic elements into their designs. (Businessoffashion.com, 2014). Other big competitor is Gareth Pugh, with his sinister and constructed creations. His creations are less organic in the way that the silhouette flows (cut), being more geometric and structured. (Vogue UK, 2014) Although both major competitors do not produce haute-couture collections, most of their pieces resemble to that market. Iris is trying to approach the ready-to-wear market giving a better position to brand in order to compete in the market.

CURRENT SITUATION

As referenced earlier, Iris Van Herpen focus on the creation of couture and ready-to-wear pieces. The incorporation of old techniques, with the modern technology and techniques, is what makes this brand so unique. The brand collaborates with scientists, artists, and other luxury brands, such as the Don Perignon Mertaphosis bottle. Currently the main focus it’s on ready-to-wear collections (the last tree were Ready-to-Wear). The designs from Iris Van Herpen incorporate organic elements (animals, the human body, etc.) and new technologies (3D printing, inspiration on new technologies, etc.) providing modern pieces and avant-garde fashion shows. Her collections are based in the mix of new and traditional materials, usually in plain colors (black, white, transparent, nudes, metallic). Another component that makes the pieces so unique is the frequent use of symmetry. Inspiration from organic elements - fossils, water, bone structures - and the inspiration from technologies study of magnetic forces, electricity, physics and chemistry - result in beautiful symmetric pieces of couture. The designer is also known for her capacity to create incredible shoe wear that can be considered true pieces of art. Her diverse collaborations with the shoe brand Unite Nude resulted in particular models such as the 3D printed shoes that recreates tree roots. (image at left) (Fairs, 2013). The latest collection Magnetic Motion (Iris van Herpen, 2014) incorporate techniques such as molding and laser cutting, 3-D printing and architectural handwork. Since the brand new

9

focus is ready-to-wear collections, new inspirations, techniques, forms & shapes, colors & textures can be explored, such as visionary art and the application of bright and vibrant colors, into the materials and techniques used. The incorporation of Visionary Art into the new Haute-Couture collection will bring a new vision for the brand designs. Visionary art has as main elements geometry and symmetry (already used by Iris Van Herpen), and the use of bright colors such as yellows, blues, purples and greens. It usually represents a wider vision, dreams or mere imagination of our physical and spiritual world, by representing the different states of consciousness, states of our soul and mind and interaction with spiritual and mystical world. (Grey, 2012) Focusing in a deeper theme that explores more what we can feel and dream, rather and we can see and touch will result in new unique designs, with the application of new materials and a new color pallet for the pieces. The new Haute Couture collection Mystic Souls will use forms, shapes and colors from visionary art incorporated with Iris’ vision and techniques.

CoMMUNICATION BACKGROUNG Since Iris Van Herpen is a luxury brand mainly focused on haute couture, the brand invest more in offline communications such as collaborations, exhibitions and extravagant fashion shows, rather than online communication such as social media. Analyzing in depth the communication of the bran was possible to conclude the following:

OFFLINE

FASHION SHOWS Iris Van Herpen runway shows are presented in the most unique way. Most of the collection usually talk for itself but a elaborated visual fashion show complements perfectly the pieces. Her latest winter fashion show featured wrapped models (image above) result of a collaboration with Lawrence Malstaf. (Palsenbarg, 2014) Other elements incorporated in the fashion shows, that make them so unique, are music and lights.

EXHIBITIONS The brand collections are true pieces of art. The proof of that is the amount of times it has already bee featured in different exhibitions around the world. With over thirty participations in exhibitions, Iris Van Herpen show the artistic potential that the brand has, and proves the huge impact the creations are making in the fashion industry. The image above shows a piece from Iris’ exhibition in the International Centre of Lace and Fashion, France.

COLLABORATIONS As previously referred the brand is known for the extensive number of collaborations A very well known one, was with Icelandic singer Björk. The cover of her new album Biophilia featured pieces from Iris’ Synthesia Collection. The artist was dressed too in different live concerts. (Iris van Herpen, 2014) The brand is known for different collaborations with coreographers, architects, jewellery designers, visual artists and film makers.

11

ONLINE The brand does not focus as much when it comes to online communication. Although, the website is well constructed and informative. The initial page give access to latest’s collection, and menu bar helps to reach all of the other quickly and effectively. But analysing social media is possible to understand that is the weakest point in all the communication strategy. For example on Facebook, event though the post are relatively frequent the brand has very lower awareness, with only 9,173 likes. (Facebook, 2014) The brand only has another account on social media, Instagram, but in here the awareness is quite better, reaching the over 18 thousand followers. (Instagram.com, 2014) Another way of communication identified are videos - result from collaborations. The video from the collaboration with Dom Pérignon and the teaser of her Spring-Summer 2013 collection - Voltage. (Iris Van Herpen, 2013) (Dom Pérignon, 2014)

DOM PERIGNON COLLABORATION VIDEO

THE “MESSAGE” Finding the message of the brand was hard, since there is no specific tagline. With a deeper analysis of the website the tagline of Iris Van Herpen can be “Normal Rules don’t Apply...”. This quote is featured in her about me page, and is the first sentence to appear. In fact normal rules don’t apply when it comes to the creation of new shapes and materials with the combination of new and old techniques. In the end the brand main message is uniqueness, making fashion an artistic expression.

TARGET MARKET Since Iris Van Herpen it’s a brand positioned in the luxury market, the target that the brand wants to reach is more restricted. Even with the new Ready-to-Wear collection, the price ranges of the pieces are still high and require consumers with economical power. In the end the brand has two different targets - the ones directed to couture and the ones for more casual day clothes. Iris Van Harper Couture targets women from 25 to 50 years old that live in big international cities such as New York, London, Los Angeles and Tokyo. These women are strong, independent, and are not afraid of taking any risks when it comes to dressing. They work in artistic fields such as music (singers), cinema (actresses), dance, fashion or are simply celebrities. Usually they frequent certain events that require a more extravagant dress code or they need specific unique

12

garments for their performances. Iris van Herpen ready-to-wear focus on women from 20-40 years old that loves simple pieces with a touch of different and extravagant. They live in big cities, like the previous target, and they work in every different kind of fields, but ones that require comfortable clothes but where a touch of edgy can be incorporated. They work as art gallery owners, designers, stylists, actresses, and freelancer work in the fashion area. They go to small events that require a more casual, personalized style.

INSPIRATION VISIONARY ART

ALEX GREY “The creative principle is less about dogma and more about opening ourselves to the evolution of consciousness.” (Grey, 2014)

14

Alex Grey is an American painter born in Ohio, USA. Influenced by his father, a graphic designer, as a child, Alex started to draw. Since always themes as transcendence weave and death always intrigued the artist, and are regular themes for his artwork. In 1974 he moves to Boston to work and study in the Museum of Fine Arts. There he meets his partner for life, Allison Grey (which influenced all of his self being and therefore art). After he world at Harvard Medical School where prepared cadavers for dissection and studied them. There he developed anatomical training and prepared him to develop his series Sacred Mirrors (21 life-sized painting that represent a journey toward the divine nature by analyzing the body, mind and spirit) (Alex Grey, 2012) Most of his paintings are representations of human states, when transcending a higher level (shows soul and true core of human beings). From themes such as love, life and birth - to depression, death and fear. His work is characterized for a rich colour pallet: blues, purples, yellows, oranges and reds. Alex Grey incorporates certain elements that make his work so unique such as anatomical elements (veins, muscles, organs, etc.), the third eye and symmetry.

INSPIRATION VISIONARY ART

AMANDA SAGE “My aspiration is to paint messages, visions and narratives that communicate with an ‘older & wiser us’, awakening ancient memory; as well as the ‘present us’, that we may grow up and accept the responsibilities towards ourselves, each other and the rest of existence on this planet… now” (Sage, 2014)

16

Amanda Sage was born in 1978 in Colorado, USA. After graduating high school she travelled around the world, and in Bali (where she volunteered and worked in other projects) she made her first contact with the visionary artist and teacher. During the time she was invited by the artist Michael Fuchs to an extensive study on painting and techniques in Vienna Austria. Since this time Amanda and her colleague share a studio in WUK (self-governed culture house) in Austria. Quickly she became one of the members of the Board of Directors of WUK, moving to major sections of the studio and different workshops. Since 1999 she has been featured in galleries, salons and museums around the world. Like most visionary artist she participates too, in art projects and live painting in events, such as Boom Festival. (Amandasage.com, 2014) Amanda is known for using art as a tool for spiritual growth and transformation. She makes part of the new generation of visionary artists. Her art is characterized by the use of the frequent use of the female representation, her use of line to express the higher spirit, her rich but subtle colour pallet (blues, purples, greens, soft nudes, oranges & yellows) and symmetry.

WhAT nOT TO DO do’s & don’ts

Iris Van Herpen new collection will be inspired in Visionary Art, as explained previously. The intent of this new collection is to get inspired by the core of visionary art - representation of the spiritual world, the representation of what we can feel but not physically touch - and all the visual elements of the pieces of art - bright colours, symmetry, lines and curves and geometric shapes. The intent is to adapt the Iris’ vision with the elements of visionary art, and not make a literal approach. The collection and the editorial need to transmit a feeling of “Iris van Herpen in LSD”, NOT a literal representation of psychedelic and visionary elements. Although all of this artistic movement is connected to the hippie culture, the intent is NOT to relate to the movement of the 60’s. No elements that resemble that era can be used. Symmetry is the key elements that connect Iris and visionary art. The use of this element CAN’T be excessive. Needs to be highlighted but not used in everything.

EDITORIAL BRIEF

For the editorial of the collection, the main idea is to transmit the spiritual world, to represent the spirit. To achieve this, the styling, the editing of photography, the location and the model attitude will be extremely important. The main point that would make the editorial possible is the editing of photography that with a motion blur effect will give the final “soul coming out of body experience. It has to transmit a surreal effect. To do this peculiar work, Nick Knight would be the perfect choice. Known for his edgy photos and editing, it would be possible to achieve the final result.

20

stylist Robbie Spencer will be in charge of the styling of the photo-shoot. He is the appointed Fashion Director of Dazed & Confused, and DazedDigital.com since 2013. Know for his work in editorial (Vogue Italia, Love Magazine, V Magazine, Purple Fashion), advertising (Dior, Balenciaga, Hunter) and fashion shows (MSGM, Maison Martin Margiela). The stylist would include garments and shoes from Iris Van Herpen, and complementary accessories, chosen by the stylist. (Intrepidlondon.com, 2014)

MODEL CASTING Devon Aoki, is a well known model and actresses. She was born in New York, and her modelling career started when she was only 13 years old. Devon participated for several campaign for huge brands, such as Chanel and Versace, and appeared in several covers, such as Vogue and Interview. She is known too for her appearances as an actress in movies such as 2 Fast 2 Furious and Sin City. Her Asian features will bring diversity and freshness to the editorial, and fit with the concept and collection. (Fandango, 2014)

21

EDITORIAL make up and hair Since the collection is going to be focused on bright colors, organic shapes and symmetry, the make-up and hair would be simple, but at the same time edgy. For the make-up, the eyes would be highlighted with glitter, used as eyeliner, and the rest would be soften with a soft pink/peach blush. The lips would be highlighted with a very soft and transparent pink lipstick. The hair would be painted grey and extensions would be applied to give the big straight, grey flowly hair.

preparation The editorial would be held in a studio, against a simple black background. The black would be a way to contrast with colorful collection. After talking with the photographer and to know if it possible to photograph in his studio, is timer to prepare the day of editorial. In case the photographer can’t provide his studio, a space would need to be rented for at least 6 hours. Transport will be provided to everyone to meet in the final location. The first people to arrive would be the make-up artist, hairdresser and model, to prepare all of the beauty part. The stylist, art director and photographer would be the next to arrive. After choosing the outfits, prepare set and lights, the photo-shoot could be started. Food and drinks (fruit, cakes, pizza, water, juices, etc.) would be provided for the whole crew.

22

the shoot time schedule 8:00 - Meet in the location with all of the equipment, model and make-up&hair 8:30 - Beginning of hair and make-up & set of food, clothes, chairs, etc. 9:30 - Arrival of stylist, art director and photographer 9:45 - Finish of hair & make-up. Break-time for model. 10:00- Choose of outfits & accessories; guide model for poses and expressions & test light and others. 11:00 - Final tests & Retouches 11:30 - Beginning of Photo-shoot 14h00 - End of photo-shoot + lunch time 15h15 - Pack up everything to leave.

art direction The art director would be focused on making sure the clothes were placed properly in the photos, and to guide some models poses. He would make sure that the main feeling of the editorial was being transmitted, and if everything look coherent. A double check on make-up and hair would be made too.

model direction

The famous photographer Nick knight, who already worked with her, would direct the model, Devon Aoki. The chemistry between both would be fantastic, and he will guide Devon into a spiritual journey, with music to get in the specific mood. She will use expression and poses that reflect a “out of body experience.

23

post shoot retouching The retouching will be extremely important to give the final desired effect. Colors of the garments should be highlighted, and the motion blur effect needs to be applied in different and artistic ways.

24

page layout The editorial would feature a black fabric/ paper as background, which means that it will be simple, and contrast with the clothes. The layout of the page will be black, ant the pictures can cover all page, only on a corner, and centered. The black layout would fuse with the photos and give a more coherent look and feel.

Iris Van Heprpen new collection will focus on beautiful couture pieces inspired by visionary art. A lookbook will be more appropriated in this case, for being directed to people in the business. This lookbook will help stylists to choose the best pieces for their editorials, and for the main consumers to be updated to the new collection. The format of the look book is an A5, but comes inside a A4 cover, where the lookbook is inserted. A “grid” in plastic will be placed in order to be used as a “basket” to support the lookbook. The layout of the lookbook has in vector one of Iris’ dresses from previous collection, and a frame all around, both with a “psychedelic” picture as a background. The pictures will be in a white background and in colors, in order for clients to have a better idea of the colors of the garments. Although is a lookbook, we are still dealing with a couture collection, so, some dynamic and originality will be needed. Edgier poses, and more alive attitude from the model. Different angles should be used in order to show perfectly the clothes. Prices and description of garments will be included.
