PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
W
hen my wife and I moved to Park Ridge five years ago, we knew it was the place we wanted to raise our family. With phenomenal schools, an active Park District, and a committed local business community, choosing Park Ridge was easy. This Community Guide, which the Chamber has been printing for decades, was one of our early resources for tapping in to Park Ridge. As a business owner, joining the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce was a great way to get involved with networking and community service events. This Chamber is committed to the success of all local businesses, but also to the unique character of Park Ridge. This year we will be hosting electronics recycling days, classic car shows, and various shopping/dining events for the entire community. Our Community Star Awards and Scholarship programs are bigger than ever, and we continue to work closely with other local organizations and government. I trust you’ll find this Community Guide as useful as we have to learn more about what makes Park Ridge “a great place to live and work.” And if there’s anything that the Chamber of Commerce can do to help, don’t hesitate to let us know. Joshua Nichols, President Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce Unbound Technology

PARK RIDGE COMMUNITY STARS The Park Ridge Chamber’s “Night of Stars” Dinner-Dance annually recognizes outstanding members of the Park Ridge community as “Community Stars.” Dick Barton, Barton Marketing Group If there’s a job to be done, Dick Barton doesn’t just point it out, he does something about it. Most recently, he was an integral member of the Our Parks Legacy Committee helping to pass a referendum to purchase more than 11 acres of open space and preserve it for future generations as a new multi-use park. He also served on the Park Board for four years, including one year as President when he initiated and passed the Park Speed Zones which reduced traffic speeds around parks. He also established the Environmental Task Force for the Park District. Along with then Chamber President Don Sebastian Jr., he helped establish the first electronic recycling event in 2008, now an annual event. He also helped initiate the effort to Save Iannelli Studios, chairing the first committee meeting when the outcome seemed doomed by a developer’s contract on the property. His brainchild — Historic Tours of Park Ridge — helped raise some of the money that allowed the Kalo Foundation to purchase Iannelli Studios in 2011. Ralph Cincinelli, Police Chief’s Advisory Task Board As a resident of Park Ridge for almost 40 years, Ralph Cincinelli felt it was time to give back to the community in 2010 when Mayor David Schmidt appointed him to the Chief’s Advisory Task Force. Previously a member of the Appearance Commission, when the Mayor asked the Task Force to look at cost efficient solutions for the police facility, Ralph took the lead using his expertise as a registered architect. Spending countless hours studying the police facility and its operations, he reviewed old diagrams and plans, crawled through spaces and spoke with department members and city staff. The result was “Cost Effective Strategies to Address Risk Factors at the Police Facility,” a document which explained a three-phase process to make improvements to the more serious issues confronting the police facility. Phase I was embraced by the City Council. When construction began on Phase I, Ralph served as the informal “Project Manager,” keeping the project on course.

Michael Deverman, Maine South High School Whether it’s environmental restoration, working with homeless kids and senior citizens with Alzheimer’s disease, or teen ministry, Michael Deverman is a solid and engaged citizen who gives back to his community. A member of the Maine South National Honor Society and Vice President of the senior class, Michael is a yearbook photographer, Hawk Pride Facilitator, a member of V-Show Trunk, who also ran track and cross country. Michael hopes to become a landscape architect and combined his interest in the environment and design creating a Wildlife/ Butterfly Garden as part of his Boy Scout Eagle Leadership Service Project. He has done volunteer work in Costa Rica and rebuilt homes in tornadodevastated Joplin, MO. Through his community service project, SEE (Sustainable Environmentally-

Friendly Effort) the Future, he plans to continue to create native gardens for places such as nursing homes. As a senior gift, he envisions creating a native plant/wildlife garden at Maine South to honor its 50th anniversary. Richard & Dorothy DuSold, PRCO/Friends of the Library Since the days when they were the backbone of the production staff coordinating all the scenery and props and costuming Oakton Rink Ice Shows, Dick and Dorothy Dusold have been adding to ambiance that is Park Ridge in countless ways. Currently serving as Co-Presidents of the Friends of the Library where they have volunteered for almost 40 years, they have organized wonderful book sales that are held twice a year and so much SEE STARS, PAGE 9

more to help support our Library. Retiring after 18 years of dedicated service to the Park Ridge Civic Orchestra (PRCO) Dick and Dorothy have worked on everything from stage management to setting chairs and music stands, to hauling lights and equipment. Going the extra mile for each PRCO member, they set up tables for instruments and snacks, built coat racks for winter shows, cleaned out the dressing rooms and managing the electric, lighting and sound for the concerts and performed countless other tasks quietly and without fanfare. Sonia Dziedzic, Park Ridge Cultural Arts Council A dynamo of a women, Sonia Dziedzic is the perfect example of the old adage, “Ask a busy woman to do soething and you will get it done.” A member of the Park Ridge Cultural Arts Council for many years, she has led the way as point person for writing, overseeing, and facilitating art grant money that has helped school-age children and their teachers, as well as individual artists in Park Ridge. These grants have also funded summer scholarships and encouraged collaboration among various art groups in Park Ridge. A Girl Scout leader, she is Curriculum Specialist for Visual Arts and the Maine South Color Guard Coach. She also serves on the Board of Brickton Gallery and Art Center and is a Professional Growth Technology Class Instructor. Her personal penchant for art and all its ramifications in the community as well as her presence as a qualified staff member from District 64 on the Cultural Arts Council Board help ensure that Park Ridge will continue to be known as a town that loves the arts. Adai Karuthalackal, Maine East High School Whether he’s promoting the charity basketball game to raise funds for Lutheran General Hospital,
or on the volleyball court leading his team, Adai Karuthalackal sets the standard as an exemplary scholar athlete carrying a current GPA of 4.27. He helped students struggling with depression through a program he designed in cooperation with Erika’s Lighthouse, a local organization that educates about depression. While most students who tutor before or after school are paid, Adai volunteered every Thursday morning at 7 a.m. to help other students out of the goodness of his heart. On the weeklong Lyceum service trip to southern Indiana this past summer, Adai stood out as always the first one in and the last one out, never complaining and with a smile on his face, even through some of the work was difficult and dirty. He also volunteers at his church where he has served in soup kitchens, prepared meal packs for Haitian children, raised funds to assist with Haiti’s 2010 earthquake. Sheri Roche, Park Ridge Community Fund Sheri is a person who every organization would love to have on their board. A retired special education teacher for Park Ridge-Niles District 64, she has participated in every event that the Park Ridge Community Fund has hosted, chairing many of them. She not only donates her time to the community, she regularly provides gifts and donations for the various raffles we have throughout the year. Sheri is a great idea person who always follows through on her thoughts. She is also well known as a ‘people person’ who works great with others and can deal with any situation. Chaired and coordinated by Sheri, the Harry O’Brien Community Run has grown larger every year and would not happen if not for her efforts and passion. Peter Ryan Troop 50, BSA A strong presence in the Northwest Suburban Council leadership of Boy Scouts of America, Peter Ryan is currently serving as Blackhawk District
Chairman. He also still serves as an assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 50. He has also been active in Park Ridge Soccer and was elected Commissioner/CEO of PR Soccer, As a member of that board, he was instrumental in the $350,000 donation PR Soccer made to improve the Emerson School soccer fields. In the ‘90s, Pete served on the Finance Committee appointed by board of School District 64. From 2005 to 2009, Pete served as an elected Trustee of Maine Township and actively helped with service programs including Maine Township Food Pantry fundraising. He is currently serving his fourth term on the Park Ridge Community Health Commission. Pete is a trained member of CERT (Citizens Emergency Response Team) and NIMS (National Incident Management System), all now under FEMA. As a volunteer, he teaches Emergency Preparedness to help residents cope with disasters. Pete has also volunteered with National Night Out, Crop Walk among many of local service events both public and private. Joseph Bredemann, Lifetime Achievement Award Founder of the Rotary Club of Park Ridge more than 50 years ago, Joseph Bredemann Sr. continues his membership as he has passed his legacy of community service on to his children and grandchildren. The Bredemann family and their auto dealerships have had an immeasurable impact on Park Ridge over the decades serving as role models of business leadership in our community. Joseph has been a lead sponsor for the Taste of Park Ridge for many years, most recently being the headline sponsor for the main stage. Supporting many organizations in this community, including Lutheran General Hospital and Rainbow Hospice, each year he quietly underwrites the costs for the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce to host a Sunday Supper. Sadly, Joseph passed away shortly after the dinner.
OUR MISSION The Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce Mission is to provide leadership and support to its business, professional and community organizations.

HOUSING & UTILITIES Electric
Commonwealth Edison Company provides electric service to Park Ridge and surrounding areas. For service information, call 1-800-334-7661.
Water
City-owned distribution lines deliver Lake Michigan water (purchased from the City of Chicago) to Park Ridge residents. Meters are read by the residents and billed every two months.
Streets & Alleys
City streets and alleys are maintained by the Public Works Department. Streets are cleaned and swept at regular intervals during the spring, summer and fall. Snow is removed in winter according to a continually updated snow removal plan that calls for all streets to be cleared within 24 hours after snowfall.
Refuse, Recycling & Yard Waste
Licenses & Permits
Residential refuse, recycling and yard waste are collected weekly by city contractors according to a schedule. Branches and twigs under 3 in diameter and 5’ in length may be placed in paper yard waste bags or bundled together for collection. Residents should contact a tree service company or landscaper to dispose of larger branches. Homeowners must call Arc Disposal at 847-9810091 to arrange for a special pickup for the collection of construction materials (more than 1 cubic yard) or to dispose of any white goods (refrigerators, ranges, water heaters, air conditioners, etc.), automobile tires and truck tires. There is a charge for this service. * Due to changes in Illinois’ electronics recycling law, residents can no longer place any electronic products in their refuse or recycling for disposal.
To help preserve the pleasant surroundings, no dogs or cats are permitted to run loose in the city. They must be on a leash or fenced in. Owners are required by law to clean up after their pets. A license fee of $10 per year per dog or cat is required and may be paid at City Hall. Vehicle license fees are required yearly for all automobiles and motorcycles. The current license fee for a passenger vehicle is $45. A late fee of $15 is imposed if paid after June 15. The late fee is increased to $35 if paid after Sept 15. There are no bicycle license fees. By ordinance, bicycles may not be ridden on the sidewalks in downtown Park Ridge. Any bicycle used at night must be equipped with a headlight and a reflector. All license fees may be paid at City Hall. City Hall is located at 505 Butler Place, across from Hodges Park in the Uptown area. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. City Hall is closed Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. For complete information, visit the Web site at www.parkridge.us

Park Ridge Civic Orchestra Victor Muenzer, Music Director Enjoy popular classics October through May at the Pickwick Theater. The 21st season kicks off Oct. 29 with the second annual all-ages Halloween Concert, “Tricks & Treats with the Mighty Organ,” featuring music from Harry Potter, Phantom of the Opera and more. In December, the annual Holiday Pops concert features local students and seasonal favorite tunes. A Salute to America — Lincoln’s Birthday Eve concert is in February with Chicago celebrity Wayne Messmer, and the stirring Armed Forces Salute. In March, a French theme — music from Les Mis, Faure’s Requiem, and the majestic Saint-Saens Organ Symphony on the Pickwick’s grand theatre organ. In May, Mozart’s popular Eine Kleine Nachtmusik plus Mahler’s 5th Symphony brings a climactic end to the 21st PRCO Season.

HISTORY Our History C
aptain Daniel Wright who built a cabin in 1832 on land now owned by Lutheran General Hospital is believed to be the first settler of the area. When George Penny came to the area in 1853 looking for clay that could be used in brick making, we became known as Pennyville. By the time the first train pulled into the village in 1856, the village had been renamed Brickton because George Penny was too modest to have the town named after him. Penny, along with his business partner Robert Meacham, ran the successful brickyard that supplied many of the bricks used in the rebuilding of Chicago after the Great Fire of 1871. Brickton bricks may have helped rebuild Chicago, but Chicago returned the favor because many people burned out in that fire relocated in Brickton and became our first commuters. In 1873, Brickton became Park Ridge when the 403 citizens voted to change the name and adopt a village form of government. The Park Ridge State Bank, once located at Prospect and Northwest Highway. Since its incorporation as a city in 1910, Park Ridge has continued to grow and prosper. As farmlands and greenhouses faded from the landscape in the 1950s, our very desirable residential community grew, with continued access to excellent schools and parks for recreation. We enjoy convenient access to the Metra rail system, interstate highways and O’Hare Field. Park Ridge is home to many civic organizations which enrich community life. The many retail establishments here are ably supported by the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce.

he mission of the Park Ridge Historical Society is to collect, preserve and display artifacts of our history, to promote pride in the accomplishments and heritage of the people of Park Ridge, and to celebrate the unique places and events in Park Ridge history that make our town a special place. The Society was founded in 1971 and first located in a house at 140 Euclid Avenue, built in 1905 by Fred I. Gillick, whose real estate office was located in a carriage house at the rear. In 1983, the society moved

to a Victorian-era house at 41 South Prairie Avenue. Display rooms were devoted to depicting a way of life that has long since left Park Ridge, with display cases changed on a regular basis to showcase different Park Ridge artifacts. The Society moved in October 2009, from the Prairie Avenue address and embarked on its History on the Move project, relocating in the Hannah Solomon Cottage on Prospect Avenue. The cottage, on the grounds of the Park Ridge Youth Campus, has the distinction of being one of the two sites in Park Ridge on the National Register of Historic Places. Renovation of the structure will provide not only a place for display of Park Ridge artifacts in a historically

significant building, but also a contemporary space with movable partitions to accommodate special displays and exhibits, lectures, scout and student visits, receptions and permanent display of special artifacts. While awaiting the cottage renovation, the society continues to offer programs of interest to all Park Ridge residents, including speaking programs, tours of the Town of Maine Cemetery and classroom visits. In 2014 the Society will offer “then and now” Bike Hikes through Park Ridge. The tours will include sites such as the Pickwick Theatre, historic parks in this park district centennial year and Hillary Rodham Clinton’s neighborhood.

ome to The Kalo Foundation of Park Ridge, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the rich artistic legacy of the city through education, advocacy, and preservation, as well as promoting the arts and crafts as an integral part of our modern lives, Iannelli Studios Heritage Center was saved from the wrecking ball in 2011 through a community-wide grassroots effort, and is undergoing ongoing restoration. As we continue to polish this Park Ridge jewel, the studio of noted artist Alfonso Iannelli, who helped design the world-famous Pickwick Theater and sculpted the Rock of Gibraltar on the Prudential Building in downtown Chicago, has been transformed into a gathering place for classes, gallery exhibits, art heritage tours, a gift shop and more — as well as a magnet that draws visitors from all over the world to learn about our town’s art colony legacy, especially this place at the corner of Elm and Northwest Highway where American Modernism put down its roots and influenced the world for 45 years. The Kalo Foundation Master Plan for the Iannelli Studios Heritage Center already has created a vibrant educational and visitor destination showcasing the historic Park Ridge Arts Colony Then & Now. Programs have included seminars and classes on the Iannellis and the Kalo Shop, photography, painting and drawing, sculpture and printing, silversmithing and more. The Visitors Center offers community and business information, architectural and cultural tours and an art sales shop. The Iannelli Studios Heritage Center continues to honor the cultural legacy of Park Ridge, and helps to create an environment that makes Park Ridge a place where local business succeeds. Want to make a real difference right in your own community?
Here’s the easiest way to do it. So many important causes ask for your
support these days. Busy as you are, how can you be sure your gift will truly make a difference – and that it will benefit people in Park Ridge? The Park Ridge Community Fund is how. Our campaign theme is GIVING begins at home, and that’s just what we do. The Park Ridge Community Fund is a 501(c) (3) organization and all donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Your one gift supports medical research, rehabilitation, health care education, and more, including safe emergency housing and care for women and their children; support for the sick and their families; services to help seniors stay engaged and healthy, and activities to provide wholesome outlets for youth and teens. And that’s just the beginning. So many people count on us, and if you share our belief that giving begins at home, we can count on you.
