HYPERFLUID SEOUL SUPER SPAN SPECTACLE SPACE master design studio 1 studio hani rashid ws 2015/16 in collaboration with Mathias Juul Frost, Jonghoon Kim Autodesk Maya, Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign

This project is about making people aware of this big massspectacle that they are part of everyday. In Shindorim Station, with 320,000 daily commuters the most crowded station in Seoul, a pathway is added that connects 4 parts that are currently divided by different means of transport like metro, highway and railway. A huge grid is spread over the area, having different junctionpoints with different meanings. By having these tetraform-inspired spaces going down and breaking up the metro on two points people who use the underground get an understanding of their travelled environment. They serve as stations and drag people out to the plaza, which is in the center of the pathwaygrid. Right above the railway and looking in the direction of the plaza, a seating area was added in order to create a stadiumlike situation. All these different elements are used to connect these various horizontal layers of a city by having vertical breaks, openings in directions of special moments and roof structures to unite the layers again.

Through various analysis of the city of Seoul and its surrounding environment, we came to the conclusion that our studio topic ‘Mass Spectacle‘ is already integrated in our everyday life. It is our everyday life, it is our commuting, our traffic systems, or in other words people. We chose Shindorim Station as our site, especially because of all these layers of a city that intersect in this place. Metro, Railway, Highway.
5.5 MILLION COMMUTE 1- 4 HOUR 5.5 MILLIONS COMMUTE 1- 4 HOURS EVERYDAY = 12 MILLION HOURS LIFE
So in conclusion, 5.5 million people commute between 1-4 hours daily, not only coming from outside of Seoul but also within the city. Which means that around 12 million hours of life are wasted sitting in a car, bus, train etc.
A lot of people are spending their way to work in an overcrowded metro where they are not even aware of their travelled environment anymore.

This massspectacle is for most people no really visible. The definition of a normal massspectacle would be that a crowd of people is having the same focus. In this event though, we have the mass, but the mass is not aware of itself being the spectacle.
MASS IS DISCONNECTED FROM BEING AWARE OF THE SPECTACLE THEY MOVE WITHIN
So we defined the people commuting daily and this movement in all this as our spectacle.

CONNECTING LAYERS FOCUS COMMUTERS EXPERIENCES 4 different elements are used in order to focus the mass on this movement surrounding our site already. So our program was creating various experience points and atmospherical connections of all 4 layers following the modern flaneur who is going with no purpose only after atmosphere inspite of having a purpose and a target.

POROCITY ADAPTIVE ECOLOGIES bachelor thesis institute of experimental design. hochbau Theodore Spyropolous 2013/2014 in collaboration with Lara Leonardi, Isabell Jochum, Hannah Macheiner Autodesk Maya, Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Arduino
Natürliche Belüftung, Dämmung and Variationen an Dichte. --

An adaptive living System, porose in every scale, from wall to city or even bigger. It’s porosity affords natural light throughout the building, with ambient light inside a unit, natural ventilation, insulation and variations of density. The infrastructure is adapted to the scales, which means different scale equals different speed. The system is 3D-sand-printed on site, by an autonomous flexible machine.

MATERIAL STUDIES
material research on porosity effervescent tablets in cement gradient in size, porosity and density
Analyzing the Habitat 67 by Moshe Safdie for us the most interesting aspects of this building are the prefabrication of a modular system which provides flexibility and adaptability in an easy and fast way, the porosity within the building which provides natural ventilation between the apartments, natural light and privacy and its infrastructure which can expand endlessly, vertical as well as horizontal and not only to provide access to the apartments but is also a meeting area for people living there. Our approach was to create a living system that works as a one family house or unit as well as an apartment building or even a city. It enhances social contacts and community, spatial identity and recognition and an individual design for its residents. Its infrastructure is accessible and usable for everyone, provides mobility, accommodation and short distances, and is a communal meeting point.
The system has natural light throughout the building, with ambient light inside a unit, natural ventilation and provides privacy. We did studies on porosity, using cement and effervescent tablets, trying to create and analyze different variations of density like several centers of higher porosity, one center with low porosity, gradients from high porosity to no porosity and collages. Research led us to find Tafoni, small cave-like features found in granular rock such as sandstone, with rounded entrances and smooth concave walls. They often occur in groups that can riddle a hillside, cliff, or other rock formation. Formation: salt weathering, differential cementation, structural variation in permeability, lenght of the drying period between wettings; min 5cm up to 60cm

every circle has a sphere
Rooms with a negative charge are smaller more private rooms like bathrooms and rooms with a positive charge are rooms that are more public and, or bigger, like the living room, kitchen and bedrooms. And each room can only connect with three other rooms (so the structure will be porose). We created 15 different units.

CLUSTER Starting from a center point, 3 strands develop, in 3 different directions. The two longer ones are built from the smaller, our living units, and the shorter one from the public units. As for the height the cluster develops like an arch which is more flat towards the south and steeper towards the north. Also the units are arranged with interspaces so the whole cluster is porose and sunlight can get through. COLLECTIVE Starting from a cluster the collective develops 2 dimensionally forming center points at the ends of the strands with the 2 missing strands added. So each point is center of 3 different strands. This goes on like that, forming a very porose structure.

SAND // TECTONICS // 3D PRINTING TECHNIQUE For the production we analyzed Tafoni again. They develop mostly in rocks with different types of material, one looser than the other so the looser areas wear down by erosion leaving only the harder material. We found that that resembles 3D printing. We used sand printing because it suited best with our system and the Tafoni. We built a robot which can drive across a layer of sand and leaves a binder wherever we need it, changing its consistence. Another layer of sand will be added and the robot goes over it again. This will be repeated until the whole unit, cluster or collective is printed. Then the loose, not bonded sand will be taken out leaving only the structure.

The walls of the units are porose as well. They are built out of 3 layers that can either be filled or not. These 4 stages are used diverse within a unit and even one room, so if there are areas with nice views or where people need more light, that part will be perforated whereas more private areas are more likely translucent. Also the position of the perforation and translucency depends on whether it is an area where people would normally sit or stand. For the porose walls we built three valves to control the thickness of the wall. If one valve is closed the wall will become thinner, if two valves are closed it becomes translucent and if all of the valves are closed there will be a hole in the wall, creating the perforation. This way all the walls can become porose. perforation, density, transluscence depending on human needs (sitting, standing, etc.)

ANTHROPOPHOBIOUS HOUSE TYPES VS. SPECIES master design studio 1 Institute of urban design Peter Trummer, Hernan Diaz Alonso ss2013 in collaboration with Lukas Battisti, Marion Schnitzer Autodesk Maya, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
03 PORTFOLIO 26
-This studio will use the program of a house as a tool to study the shift towards a paradigm of Species as opposed to the ubiquitous platform of Types. If Types are traditionally viewed as categories of standardization, and symbolic expressions of form, then Species are malleable entities that are in constant metamorphosis; adaptation and mutation are the main characteristics from Species.

We started out by analyzing the Kauffmann Desert House by Richard Neutra and the urban project Previ Lima by Aldo van Eyck. The specialities were filtered out and then realised within an urban conecpt. The views should not intersect, the most open spaces should be far away from the closest ones etc. By abstracting introverted and extroverted space, we created 8 forms that are arranged in a way that their opening are never next to each other. 1000x1000 meter in downtown LA are developed, going from smallest to biggest scale and still having enough light everywhere. --
